Devonport Jazz Festival Celebrates 10 YearsThe Devonport Jazz Festival is getting set to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, with this years’ festival promising an array of sensational music and memorable experiences.

The festival runs from 28 July – 31 July and will showcase acts from both Tasmania and interstate. There will also be some very special overseas guests joining the celebrations for 2011. Whether you prefer traditional, contemporary, swing, Latin, or big band, you will find it all over this great weekend. Even better news is that you can enjoy it all in the warm, cosy atmosphere of Devonport’s restaurants, pubs and clubs, or lounge back at the Devonport Entertainment Centre.

Award winning big band, the Mace Francis Orchestra, along with modern trad ensemble, The Hounds, are making their way to Devonport Jazz from WA. The Mace Francis Orchestra will feature in the Great American Songbook concert, a tribute to Miles Davis and innovations in modern music. Contemporary quartet, Ilmiliekki from Finland will also appear in the Miles Davis Tribute as well as featuring in their own concert at the Devonport Entertainment Centre. The Shuffle Demons from Canada will add a funky edge to the festival’s Musos in the Mall concert and are sure to be a big hit on the local dance floors.

The Devonport Entertainment Centre will also host a series of special events including an Australian Jazz and Poetry Project featuring seasoned actor, Tony Barry, author Mandy Sayers and some of Australia’s best musicians. Devonport Jazz also welcomes back favourite artists Tom Vincent and Julie O’Hara as they team up for some fabulous mainstream music with a twist. Take some time out, warm up your winter and enjoy the hottest winter event of the year.

Local knowledge is a valuable asset and Local Governments that identify and proactively use that knowledge can reap significant rewards.

A detailed knowledge of a region’s natural assets and infrastructure, as well as an understanding of the skills and capability sets in the local community, is essential.

Local knowledge is the element that event organisers look for to provide authentic, high-quality, differentiated, niche-event experiences. This understanding is what proponents tap into in order to reach their goal of creating product that people need and are not already getting.

USM Events, a highly credentialed international event organising company, were looking to stage a unique cycling event in Tasmania in November 2011, aimed at offering keen amateur cyclists the opportunity to train and compete with some of the world’s best professional cyclists. For USM, Launceston, with its long history of road and track cycling - seemed to be a good starting point. USM’s research indicated a genuine fit between their plans and the northern Tasmanian region.

The Launceston City Council, with the support of the Tasmanian Government, explored what it could bring to the event to leverage the experience. As a result, a week-long schedule of cycling product activities has been designed to engage the ProEx participants prior to

their Gran Fondo ride on the final day around a loop from Launceston covering 160km.

USM ProEx Project Manager Chris Price was high in his praise for the knowledge value that was added by the Council. “Introductions to the respective agencies and prospective local supporters enabled the building of a quality niche mountain bike experience...”

In another example, Burnie was recently awarded host city status for the highly prestigious Adventure Racing World Championships. Geocentric Outdoor, the Australian-based organisers of the successful bid for Tasmania to host the World Championships, were keen to get the best place to host the event.

Craig Bycroft, the principal organiser, said the proactive approach by the Burnie City Council and Burnie Sports and Events was crucial in our decision to host the event from Burnie. “They showed a real understanding of the challenges faced by event organisers and proposed creative and cost effective ways to overcome these,” Mr Bycroft said.

Through their proactive identification of hidden assets and local knowledge networks, Launceston City and Burnie City Councils will now reap substantial tourism and branding benefits in securing these and other events for their regions.

The Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, in cooperation with the West Tamar Council, has built a three dimensional holographic mine model using state of the art equipment in a Tasmanian first.

The model encompasses touch screens to bring to life underground drives, shafts and workings of the Beaconsfield mine without ever having to be 1,200 metres underground.

Nick Crawford of HAVE Crawford and Video and his team including renowned model maker Stuart Phillips

of Gravelly Beach, lighting specialist Garry Malloy, the mining expertise of BCD Resources and a high tech appearance by Todd Russell (rescued miner from the 2006 Beaconsfield mine disaster), utilised cutting edge holographic technology to provide a three dimensional interactive experience with some special surprises.

The Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre was awarded a State Tourism Award in 2009 and 2010, for Best Heritage and Culture Attraction, winning over the better known Port Arthur ruins. The redevelopment was funded through the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Clarence City Council helped celebrate National Youth Week (NYW) this year with its annual Bellerive Boardwalk Youth Week Festival based around the theme of the week – OWN IT.

The event was held on 2 April in conjunction with NYW, providing an opportunity to celebrate and recognise young people’s skills, talents and the valuable contributions they make to the community. Organised by the Youth Network Advisory Group (YNAG), the event showcased and celebrated the amazing talents of young people in Clarence.

The festival catered for all age groups, including a range of performances by local schools and the wider community, a BBQ, Vertigo Climbing Edge, face painting, a jumping castle, giveaways and an information stall with interactive activities. YNAG also organised a crash investigation activity in conjunction with the Clarence Community Road Safety Partnership to help raise awareness and promote road safety messages.

The event marked YNAG’s 10 years of service to the community, with Council recognising the important role YNAG plays. The group comprises a diverse

group of young people aged 13-25 living in Clarence and approximately 100 young people have participated in YNAG over the past decade. YNAG plays an important role in highlighting and advising Council and others on a range of issues that are important to young people in Clarence such as road safety, health and wellbeing, body image, mental health, safety of children, alcohol and drug abuse and improving access to services. The group also plays a major role in developing, planning and organising youth events in Clarence as well as providing valuable support to a number of Council and community events.

Burnie Challenge a Huge SuccessMore than 850 people traipsed through a four kilometre, mud-covered course, tackling 14 muscle aching obstacles as part of the Burnie Challenge on Sunday, 10 April.

The event, run by Burnie City Council, was developed to encourage participation in healthy eating practices and lifestyle choices within the local community. Burnie City Council Community Development Officer, Allison Daley, said they wanted to create an event that was not only fun but also encouraged people of all levels of fitness to be more active. “Local trainers provided free training sessions for anyone holding a Health Care Card and offered a discounted rate for everyone else,” Mrs Daley said.

“The fact that the Burnie Challenge wasn’t a race, but a challenge, made the day really enjoyable. People were encouraging and helping each other and there was a real sense of community,” she said.

Healthy cooking classes were also held to highlight how easy it is to cook and eat nutritious meals. Due to the success of the event, the Burnie Challenge will now occur annually.

Photos from this year’s Challenge can be viewed on the Burnie City Council website at www.burnie.net.
