Visitors will discover helpful information as theyflip through the pages filled with informationof our attractions, dining, shopping a n do v e rnight accommodations. A map of The Little Apple® is centered in the publication.

Valentine’s Surprise

February 2, is the day for the early planners to sneak away to the Beach Museumof Art and attend their Valentines Workshop for Adults. The supplies are providedas well as tasty snacks, reservations are requested for this event. $10 per personwill assure you’ll get major props for not only making a valentine, but getting it inthe mail in time for the big day.

McCain Auditorium Presents:

Two shows are featured atMcCain this month. “YoungFrankenstein” the new Mel Brooksmusical will be Thursday, Jan. 19at 7:30 pm. You’ll have “a mon-strously good time” and we knowthat Mel Brooks sure knows howto write some funny stuff.

Secondly, Simone Dinnerstein isan internationally renownedpianist having earned the No. 1spot on the Billboard Classical Chart and made the Billboard Top 200. Playingseveral well-known composers, Dinnerstein can be found gracing McCain’sstage January 26, also a Thursday at 7:30 pm.

Majestic EaglesHave you ever seen the wing span of an AmericanBald Eagle? These majestic symbols of the UnitedStates can have wingspans of 6 to 7 feet, fly at analtitude of 10,000 feet and achieve speeds up to 35mph.

To learn more about these magnificent birds be sureto attend Eagle Day on Saturday, January 7. Thisinformative meeting runs from 9 am-12 pm at theManhattan Fire Station, 2000 Denison. Dan Mulhern,Threatened & Endangered Species Biologist with theU.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will present an update onnesting Bald Eagles in Kansas. Vanessa Avara, Assis-tant Director of Milford Nature Center, KansasDepartment of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism will featureseveral live raptors during her presentation on KansasBirds of Prey. After these presentations, board thebuses provided by the Northern Flint Hills AudubonSociety and the Manhattan Convention and VisitorsBureau to view the eagles at Tuttle Creek State Park.No charge for this wonderful experience!

A 200-mile-long gravel road bicycling challenge through the Flint Hills Region of East-Central KansasSaturday, June 4, 2011Presented by Dirty Kanza Promotions

Year in Review When you live and work in Manhattan, you knowit’s fun to kick back at the pool, or tailgate at thefootball game. You are not alone in how you like tospend your free time. In fact, Manhattan attractshordes of out-of-towners for a wide variety of localattractions. Here are some of Manhattan’s hotspots in 2011.

• Colbert Hills Golf Course: 30,000 people playedthrough the Colbert Hill course, 10,000 of whichcame to Manhattan from out of state.

• City Pool: started with 2,681 attendees in May,and then skyrocketed to more than 28,000 guests inJune and July each. Between City, Cico, andNorthview pools, grand total attendance was104,266 people. 70,057 guests enjoyed the newand improved City Pool in 2011.

• K-State Athletics: no surprise, is a heavy hitter,bringing 343,209 through the gates for footballalone. Baseball saw 32,743 fans in the grandstand,and 19,761 volleyball fans cheered on the Cats inAhearn. While these numbers are from 2011 alone(they don’t span calendar years) basketball num-bers reflect last season as well, since we are justgetting the ball bouncing for the 2011-2012 season.Women’s basketball attracts 58,949 people andMen’s basketball, second highest, comes in with197,673. Whew!

• Sunset Zoo: served approximately 63,000 gueststhrough gate admissions, special event program-ming, private rentals and education outreach. TheZoo experienced three record-breaking fall events,including Friends of Sunset Zoo’s MembershipAppreciation Night in November. The Zoo’s newNature Exploration Center will allow them to trackout of state visitors in the future.

• McCain Auditorium: Based off an academic calendar, 2010-2011 shows sold 15,985 tickets. Five shows were sellouts. The current season, onlypartially over, is already at 16,603 seats sold withtwo sellout shows thus far. Their ticket sales help offset the hefty costs of bringing world class artistsand attractions to Manhattan.

Saturday, January 14, the MLK Jr. Community Celebration and Candlelight Walkfrom Manhattan High School East Campus to First Lutheran Church on Poyntz willtake place from 6:30-8:30 pm. Call Rev. Jim Spencer for details at 785-537-1496.

The School of Leadership Studies will host a Youth Celebration and Sunday Supperin their building on Mid-Campus Dr. on January 15 from 4:00-6:00 pm. The event isopen to the public and awards will be presented for the MLK Jr. art, writing andvideo competition. Contact HandsOn Kansas State for more information, 785-532-7607, [email protected]

January 16 the Manhattan Town Center Mall hosts “Honoring the Day.” Eventsspan from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will be music, entertainment, dance, choirs,presentations and vendors in the spirit of celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. A public cake cutting will take place at 4:00 pm.

A prayer breakfast will be held on Monday, January 16 at 8:00 am at the ClarionHotel, 530 Richards Drive. $10 per person. Contact Rev. Jim Spencer, 785-537-1496.

On Friday, January 27, a march from Long Park to the MLK Jr. bust at Ahern Field-house will begin at 11:00 am.
