A thousand years old, today’s Fürth is also a multicultural modern

city, where science, solar energy and high technology combine

No city in Bavaria has more historic buildings in proportion to its in-

habitants than Fürth – over 2,000. These are best represented by the

town hall and the theatre. In the old part of the city, the different

house styles impressively refl ect Fürth’s development from a small

market town to a thriving industrial centre.

A history going back more than a thousand years demands to be

told. The programme of guided walks through Fürth, organised by

the tourist information offi ce, offers you a variety of tours. These

deal with the city’s history, especially its Jewish past, its famous

people, the historical buildings, and the unique character of the

Fürth locals. With the help of a portable audio-visual guide, let

Ludwig Erhard, Max Grundig and Gustav Schickedanz – some of

Fürth’s famous sons – show you around the city.

forces with Nuremberg every year in June for the largest nation-

The Michaeliskirchweih in October, the “Queen of the Franconian

Fairs“, has been attracting people from far and wide for almost

900 years. This is the number one street festival in Bavaria and the

mixture of market and funfair has its own special charm.

But there are many other celebratory occasions, such as the New

Orleans music festival, the summer night theatrical plays, the Fürth

festival, the two Christmas markets and the festival of wine. The

people of Fürth certainly know how to have a good time, especially

at the summer night ball in the illuminated municipal park, the

biggest open air ball in southern Germany.

Twice a year the idyllic old town hosts the colourful Graffl markt

(fl ea market), packed with bric-a-brac and second-hand goods.

Fürth comedians Volker Heißmann and Martin Rassau are famous

nationwide. In their own theatre, the Comödie Fürth in the

Berolzheimerianum building, many well-known cabaret artists and

boulevard-theatre groups take the stage.

Fürth’s municipal theatre is the crème de la crème when it comes

to art and culture in grand style. Offering challenging touring plays

and numerous productions of its own, it is highly regarded far

beyond the city limits.

Every two years, the International Klezmer-Festival attracts music

lovers from all over the world to Fürth. Another magical highlight

for the city and the surrounding region is the International Puppet

Theatre Festival.

relaxing oases in the city centre

The locals just love their municipal park, built in 1951 for a garden

show. This is the green heart of Fürth, a wonderful oasis where you

can go for a leisurely stroll and take a break from everyday life.

The park’s cafe (Stadtparkcafe) is the perfect place to enjoy a cap-

puccino or glass of wine after a guided tour of the city.

In the southern part of Fürth, on ground that once housed an army

barrack, a new spacious park has been built. A boules area, skating

rink, streetball fi eld, climbing wall and a large activity playground

provide opportunities for sport and fun.

Relax at the “Fürthermare“, a thermal baths and adventure pool com-plex opened in 2007. Enjoy a swim in the curative thermal water or try out the sauna built in Mallorquin style.

Children can let off steam on any one of the numerous adventure

playgrounds in the city, the most beautiful being located in the

centre of the municipal park (Stadtpark). For those who like sport

the city organises a children’s run in summer and the Fürthermare

adventure pool promises the ultimate experience for young bathing

enthusiasts. In nearby Zirndorf the Playmobil-FunPark is a major

attraction for families with young children.

Fürth has a lot to offer for sports enthusiasts. On the soccer front,

the former German champions “Greuther Fürth“ play in the

second division of the Bundesliga. The Metropol Marathon is well-

known nationwide, while the City Run and Fair Run are traditional

events. There is also a well-constructed network of bicycle lanes

in Fürth. The city lies on the Paneuropa cycle-way from Prague to

Paris and there is a popular bicycle lane alongside the river Reg-

nitz. They are ideal starting points for cycling tours. In addition,

the various parks, meadows and the woods are just perfect for

jogging or walking. Golf, boules, beach-volleyball and snooker are

also played here with passion.

Other suitable locations include the Grüne Halle – an exclusive

market- and event hall situated in the centre of the Südstadt park –

and the decorative marble hall in Burgfarrnbach Castle.

The Kulturforum, on the site of a former abbatoir, the radio

mu seum and the Kofferfabrik also provide interesting settings, as

well as the city’s unique hotels and restaurants, such as the ultra-

modern Hotel Pyramide and the historic masons’ lodge

(Logenhaus).

1 Centaur Fountain at BahnhofplatzThe fi rst “Art fountain” was designed by Rudolf Maison in 1890 as a monument to the fi rst German railway (1835) and the establishment of the central water supply (1877). It depicts man’s harnessing of the force of nature. At that time people regard-ed railway steam as something threaten-ing. It was only when it was tamed in the locomotive that they realised its benefi ts.

2 Fürther FreiheitThis is where the fi rst railway, the Adler, arrived in 1835. The Ludwig railway operated until 1922, quickly becoming just an insignifi cant branch line. The old railway station building was demolished in 1938. Today the historic square is an event venue and is used as a fruit and vegetable market.

3 Paradise FountainThe Paradise Fountain has stood on the Dr.-Max-Grundig site, named after its founder, since 1995. It was designed by the artist couple Barbara and Gernot Rumpf. It depicts the Garden of Eden with a couple, paradisiacal animals, a natural tree and many a spouting waterwork. The fountain is a paradise for children to play in.

4 Hornschuchpromenade and KönigswarterstraßeThese two boulevards from the promoterism period are among the most beautiful in Fürth. From 1883 to 1904 manorial houses representative of the upper classes were constructed with rich sandstone adornments between Luisenstraße and Jakobinenstraße. The spacious promenade is unique in Fürth. The green central strips were used at that time by the Ludwig railway. This was proof of the open-mindedness of this street’s residents, as it was thought chic in those days to live so close to this modern means of transport.

5 Stadttheater/Municipal Theatre Königstraße 116One of the most splendid buildings in Fürth is the Municipal Theatre, built by the famous Viennese architects Hellner und Felmer in the neo-baroque style in 1902. They achieved a highly representative effect with the “Portal arch”, the fl anking columns and the architectural sculpture. Reliefs of Mozart and Schiller, busts of Wagner, Beethoven, Goethe and Lessing on the lateral faces indicate the building’s function as a theatre and opera house. The auditorium is in the neo-rococo style.

6 Rathaus/City Hall Königstraße 86-88The monumental building was constructed 1840 – 1850 from the plans of Eduard Bürklein in the classical style of the famous architect Friedrich von Gärtner. The 55-metre high tower, the landmark of the city, is inspired by the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The industrial town grew so quickly that an extension had to be added just 50 years later.

7 The quarter behind the City HallEntire streets lined with houses in the style of classicism and historicism characterise this quarter, which arose in the second half of the 19th century and was laid out as planned in a rectangular grid for the constantly growing population. In the courtyards there were commercial establishments, workshops and small factories. Living and working were still intertwined in that age.

8 GustavstraßeGustavstraße was the most important street in the Old Town. Nowadays it is the heart of the pub scene and a popular meeting point, especially in the evening. No two houses are the same here. There is a great variety of roof shapes, heights, styles and facade designs. What is particu-larly attractive is the baroque sandstone building of the Grüner Baum inn, where the Swedish king Gustav Adolf is said to have stayed overnight in1632. Anyway, it is after him that the street is named.

9 St. Michaelskirche/St. Michael’s Church, KirchenplatzThe Michaelskirche is the oldest edifi ce in Fürth. The beginnings of this fortifi ed church date back to 1100. As befi tted the erstwhile small market town, St. Michael is only a simple, relatively unadorned village church. The tower with the west portal, the chancel and the south entrance are from the Gothic period. The interior is 19th century neo-Gothic. The only old piece of art preserved is the sandstone tabernacle built around 1500.

10 Grüner Markt/Green Market with Jugglers FountainAs Fürth was almost totally destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War, the old houses at the Grüner Markt date from the second half of the 17th and from the 18th century. Apart from simple half-timbered buildings there are sandstone houses with baroque curved gables that document the rise of the town in the 18th century. An attraction at the Grüner Markt is the Jugglers’ Fountain designed by Harro Frey in 2004 and the two groups of fi gures.

11 Alter Judenfriedhof/ The old Jewish cemeteryThis is where the Jewish community buried its dead from 1607 to 1906. The graves were created for eternity and the peace of the graves must not be disturbed. Despite acts of desecration during the Nazi period, the cemetery, which covers 20,000 m2 and once stood on the edge of town, is to this day one of the most impressive stone testaments to Jewish life in Fürth.

12 Lochnersches Gartenhaus Theaterstraße 33Around 1700 Fürth clergyman Daniel Loch-ner built his summer-house in the former garden district, which contemporaries likened “to a castle”, because it was erected in the style of Nuremberg manors. Threat ened by decay, the house was lavishly restored in 2003/2004. Its strik-ing elements are the gabled houses, the characteristic tower of stairs and the rear in half-timbered style.

13 Berolzheimerianum Theresienstraße 1The pencil manufacturer Heinrich Berolzheimer founded the adult education centre in 1904. Today the renovated Art Nouveau building is the playhouse, restaurant and scene bistro of the Comödie Fürth.

14 Logenhaus der Freimaurerloge/ Freemasons’ lodge house Dambacher Straße 11The jutting historicism building of the Fürth Lodge was constructed in 1890/91 by Nuremberg architect Leonhard Bürger, representing the concept of the Freema-sons’ lodge cast in stone. The cube-shaped body of the building is richly decorated with freemasonry symbols. Up on the gable, two female fi gures symbolise the name of the lodge, to truth and friendship. The renovated hall is one of the fi nest banqueting halls in Fürth.

15 Schloss Burgfarrnbach/ Burgfarrnbach CastleThe castle is located in the eastern part of Burgfarrnbach and was erected for the Counts of Pückler-Limpurg. It was built between 1830 and 1834 in the classical style by Royal Bavarian Building Inspector Leonhard Schmidtner. The triangular gable of the protruding middle section of the facade contains the Pückler coat of arms. The castle belongs to Fürth City Council and is used as an archive, library and meeting centre.

A The Wireless Museum Kurgartenstraße 37The exhibition, with interesting space ensem-bles and installations covering an area of over 1,000 m2, presents the history of the wireless and sound recording from the early days rightup to now. The highlight of the history of broad-casting is a 100-kW transmitter from 1940.

B The Jewish Museum Franconia Königstraße 89Fürth is a shining example of tolerant coex-istence. For centuries Jews, Protestants and Catholics have lived alongside one another. In the 17th century Fürth became the town with the largest Jewish community in South-ern Germany. The museum displays not only the history and culture of the Jews in Fürth and Franconia but also the present and the future. Throughout the year there are special exhibitions well worth seeing.

D Fürth Dialysis Museum Robert-Koch-Straße 41The KfH Dialysis Centre was named after the famous Fürth doctor Jakob Henle. Henle’s work in general anatomy and pathology is still highly regarded today. E Ludwig Erhard Municipal Museum Ottostraße 2The museum was built in the late classical style and served as a school until 2003. Some of Fürth’s famous sons, such as Ludwig Erhard, Gustav Schickedanz and Leopold Ullstein, were pupils there. The highlight of the new museum, which will be opened in September 2009, is an exhibition dealing with the social and industrial history of Fürth in the 20th century. G Museum of Women’s Culture in the Royal Stables at Burgfarrnbach Castle, Schlosshof 23 The Museum of Regional and International Women’s Culture stages exhibitions dealing with the ordinary lives of women, making comparisons at both a cultural and intercul-tural level. This is the fi rst museum of its kind, resulting from the cooperative work of the institution “Frauen in der Einen Welt e.V., Nürn-berg” and the Fürth Department of Culture. Every sort of shopper is catered for in Fürth. In the old part of

the city, it is diffi cult to resist the charming boutiques and shops.

Visitors are taken in by the friendly atmosphere here. In summer,

with one quaint pub after another waiting to greet you, it is

easy to get the impression of being in one long beer garden!

There are over 400 food-outlets and restaurants in Fürth. The

fare ranges from Turkish kebab and Franconian roasted pork

shoulder (“Schäufele”) with dumplings to the exclusive halibut

with caviar sauce.

793 Legend has it that Fürth was founded by Karl the Great. The royal household probably originated in the 7th/8th century.

1007 The fi rst confi rmed mention of Fürth in a document of King Heinrich II., giving his property “locum Furti dictum” to the chapter of canons of Bamberg cathedral.

1062 King Heinrich IV returns to Fürth the market rights that his father had transferred to Nuremberg between 1039 and 1056, when the latter city was founded.

1100 Building work on the Michaelskirche commences. For centuries the only monumental edifi ce.

1314 Burgrave Konrad II (the Pious) of Nuremberg hands the governership of Fürth back to the bishopric of Bamberg. His successors, the Margraves of Ansbach, insist on their former rights. The Free Imperial City of Nuremberg also wants to exercise its authority in Fürth. Disagreements between the members of the resulting “triumvirate” concern-ing territorial rights continue into the 18th century, particularly the disputes about who has supreme judicial authority and territorial sovereignty.

1440 Jews settle in Fürth, constructing their own cemetery around 1607 and a synagogue around 1617 (there is also a Talmud school here from the 17th century to 1824).

1632 During the Thirty Years’ War a battle between the Swedish King Gustav Adolph II. and the Imperial General Wallenstein takes place at the “Alte Veste” in Zirndorf.

1634 Fürth almost completely destroyed.

about 1685 Many immigrants arrive from France and the Netherlands. New trades and industries sprang up, like tobacco manufacture, stocking weaving, silk weaving and weaving of trimmings, silk dyeing and watchmaking.

after 1700 The leading crafts are: gold/metal-beating, mirror-making, glass, spectacle-making, carpentry and wood-turning.

1792 Fürth becomes Prussian, thus ending the “triumvirate” (bishopric of Bamberg, Mar-graves of Ansbach, and Imperial Town of Nuremberg).

1806 Fürth becomes part of Bavaria.

1818 Fürth becomes a 1st class town with its own administration and police force.

1835 The fi rst German railway “Adler” runs between Nuremberg and Fürth.

1840 – 1850 Fürth Town Hall is built from the plans of Eduard Bürklein.

1843 The Ludwig-Donau-Main-Canal is opened.

1899 a.m. – 1927 The suburbs of Weikershof (1899), Poppenreuth (1900), Dambach, Oberfürberg and Unterfürberg (1901), Atzenhof and Unterfarrnbach (1918), Burgfarrnbach (1923), Kronach and Ronhof (1927) are incorporated.

1914 With a large pool of mineral springs, Fürth becomes a health spa.

1922 In a plebiscite 64.8% of the town vote against being incorporated into Nuremberg.

1926 Fürth-Nuremberg Airport a military airfi eld from 1917 – 18 is the eighth largest out of 80 German airports.

1931 The new hospital is inaugurated.

1945 About eleven per cent of the town’s buildings are destroyed in World War Two. After the war Fürth takes in 15,000 refugees.

1950 With a population in excess of 100,000 Fürth becomes a city for the fi rst time.

1955 Flights to and from Fürth Airport are suspended.

1972 As part of the process of regional reform the suburbs of Bislohe, Braunsbach, Flexdorf, Herbolds hof, Mannhof, Ritzmannshof, Sack, Stadeln, Steinach and Vach are incorporated into Fürth. Fürth harbour is opened on the new Rhein-Main-Donau Canal.

1982 U-Bahn line from Nuremberg to Fürth opens. 1985 – Central Station, 1989 – Town Hall/Stadthalle, 2004 – Fürth Main Hospital (Klinikum), 2007 – Terminus at Hardhöhe

1993/95 The US-Army leaves Fürth.2006 Fürth becomes a university town.

2007 Fürth receives the title “city of science” (Wissenschaftsstadt) from the Free State of Bavaria. The city celebrates its 1000th anniversary.

Wilhelm Löhe (1808 – 1872) The protestant theologian was born in Fürth. His writings made a substantial contribution to shaping the Lutheran Church.

Leopold Ullstein (1826 – 1899) Born in Fürth, the successful publisher founded the Ullstein publishing house in Berlin in 1877.

Jakob Wassermann (1873 – 1934)At the beginning of the last century Wassermann was one of the most widely read authors in Germany. However, in 1933 the works of this native of Fürth were banned by the Nazis. Fürth City Council has awarded the Jakob Wassermann Prize for Literature every year since 1995.

Bernhard Kellermann (1879 – 1951) The major German man of letters was born in Fürth. Because of his commitment to the GDR he was boycotted by West German bookshops in the post-war years, result-ing in his name falling into obscurity.

Grete (1911 – 1994) and Gustav Schickedanz (1895 – 1977)Following the American blueprint Gustav Schickedanz founded the Quelle mail-order fi rm in 1927 and Grete Schickedanz ran the company after his death. Good quality at reasonable prices meant a turnover of millions, even back in the Thirties. The head offi ce of Quelle AG is in Fürth.

Ludwig Erhard (1897 – 1977)He is seen as the founder of the Social Market Economy and as being responsible for the “German economic miracle”. He was Federal Minister of Economics from 1949 to 1963 and Federal Chancellor from 1963 to 1966.

Max Grundig (1908 – 1989)The founder of the electronics giant Grundig AG is one of the greatest German business pioneers of the post-war period. In the course of the economic miracle the Fürth fi rm became the largest radio manufacturer in Europe.

Henry Kissinger (*1923)He was born in Fürth and emigrated to the USA at the age of 15. He was US Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The four towns of Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach

have merged to form the Nuremberg Municipal Region (Städte-

region Nuremberg). Together they offer an impressive cultural pro-

gramme with a diverse range of museums, interesting exhibitions

and numerous other events.

Fürth is the ideal starting point for excursions: a visit to one of the

historic Franconian towns, a trip to “Franconian Switzerland” –

a paradise for ramblers and climbing enthusiasts, a walking tour

in the Franconian vineyard region and cycling- or cultural tours

through romantic Franconia. The region has an inexhaustible

supply of leisure facilities.
