The way in which culture is funded in Germany has proved surprisingly resistant to change during the past decades. This does not apply to pop cul-ture, which has been greatly influenced by developments on the internet. However, it applies to performing and visual arts of the so-called high culture: theatre, opera, concert and dance, museums and exhibitions. Nothing much has changed here.
It is assumed – and justifiably so -, that a variety of high-quality cultural events is state-funded. This is supplemented by private sponsors, donors, com-panies and foundations which provide additional funding. The system works quite well, as can be seen from our large and varied cultural scene. But can or should this be kept up?
The local communities above all are forced to cut down on their spending. Cultural budgets have been decreasing actually because not even the gener-al increase of costs through higher pay rates can be balanced. The system is stretched to its limits. Private donors and sponsoring foundations do not want to be stopgaps but they inevitably are. In addition, the system lacks transpar-ency. The public remains largely ignorant of who receives funds from whom and why.
In the view of decreasing funds, young artists and free groups in particular are finding it more difficult to be considered. Established artists and institutions are finding it easier and are more likely to be able to rely on their tried and tested contacts and networks. Still, the majority of artists live in precarious conditions. At the same time it is lamentable that among the audience there are also fewer young people who are making use of forms of high culture, whatever the reasons.
Therefore it is time to find new ways and to build new bridges between the an-alogue and the digital world, to create new opportunities for the presentation of cultural projects and their funding through the internet, to create transpar-ency and to (re)activate the participation of citizens.
Towards more Culture (Promotion) on the Web
editorial
av en t i s f o un dat i o n | an n ua l r e por t 2 0 1 3 3
This can be achieved through innovative forms of art performances: uncon-ventional venues, unknown formations and combinations, new media and a surprising intensity.
Surely, the artists themselves have to think along new lines and work harder to promote their projects and find target groups. This does not mean that the public sector is released from the obligation to secure high-quality culture on a long-term basis. Private initiatives would by no means be able to cope with this task, even if they were able to pool all private donations and services of foundations.
The goal is rather to open up new opportunities. The wide range of communi-cations options should not be neglected by high culture. The web offers many opportunities for presentation, performance and the realisation of projects by museums, orchestras, theatre groups, literature or dance.
They should be used creatively. Culture implies communication by all means. Each additional cultural project which can be assisted in making a break-through is worth an experimental effort. As is each person with an affinity for the internet whose interest in going to a concert is rekindled in this way.

Arts and Culture
Encouraging Cultural Experiments
The Aventis Foundation focuses on cultural promotion, in particular on the promotion
of young people and new talents and regionally on the Rhein-Main area and Berlin. We
are promoting both cultural institutions that are planning new concepts and are trying
to establish them on a long-term basis and individual cultural events and projects, pro-
vided their professional and artistic level is high and they are trying to find new, experi-
mental forms of representation and mediation.
Among our new promotional ideas, partners and concepts in 2013 are:
· “kulturMut”– a pilot project for a new promotional series of the Aventis Foundation for
the support of crowdfunding and cultural promotion on the internet;
· “Stiftungsprofessur Neue Musik” – the first chair for the practice of new music at the
HfMdK university in Frankfurt, made possible through the co-operation of several founda-
tions including the Aventis Foundation;
· “Neue Wege zum Konzert”– a several-year promotional contract with the “Alte Oper” in
Frankfurt aiming at expanding into new formats of concerts and new target groups;
· “Musica Viva, Oper Stockhausen” – participation in the elaborate realisation of perfor-
mances of “Samstag aus Licht” by Karlheinz Stockhausen in Munich;
· “Oper anders denken” – support for an experimental direction project by the Kunsthoch-
schule Graz and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

kulturMut – A Crowdfunding Initiative of the Aventis Foundation
Connecting Crowdfunding and Cultural Promotion
The Aventis Foundation and the crowdfunding platform Startnext jointly developed and
realised the pilot project “kulturMut” in 2013. Its aim is to connect crowdfunding and
the work of foundations. For the first time, the funding amount of a charitable founda-
tion was determined through an open tendering process with crowd participation. The
funding budget of the Aventis Foundation for this was € 200,000. Artists from the Rhein-
Main region had been invited to present their cultural projects on the crowdfunding
platform Startnext. Out of a total of over 60 applications, 25 selected projects by both
small and large cultural institutions from various genres participated.
Eventually, 17 projects could be fully funded through crowd participation and the
support of the Aventis Foundation. The project’s initiators mobilised more than 2,900
supporters, who contributed a total of € 100,000 to the funding of the projects. Together
with the budget of the Aventis Foundation, a total sponsoring volume of € 300,000 was
reached.
The pilot project “kulturMut” is directed at artists, students and graduates from the
Rhein-Main region who are working on a high professional level. If they were able to
prove the status of a charitable or public provider or partnership and if last but not least
they were prepared to face the judgement of the crowd, then they were able to enter
their project. The Foundation supported the applicants who were most successful in the
crowdfunding process but were not quite able to reach their funding goals.
av en t i s f o un dat i o n | an n ua l r e por t 2 0 1 3 8
They received the missing amount as sponsoring from the Foundation. This was carried
out according to the order of the projects which had been established by the crowd’s
vote until the sponsoring budget was was exhausted.
The diverse projects from the fields of music, theatre, literature, film, art and exhibitions
show a varied and lively picture of the cultural scene of Frankfurt Rhein-Main. Indi-
vidual artists, young groups of artists and student initiatives as well as public cultural
institutions participated in the pilot project “kulturMut”. This helped the Foundation to
find new project ideas and partners to support. At the same time, both the artists and the
Foundation learned how to use the opportunities of the internet and of crowdfunding
more effectively for the promotion of culture. A transparent, efficient model of cultural
promotion based on participation has been tried out.

Young film directors in actionIn the context of its “eXperimente” programme 2013, the Aventis Foundation supported the programme “Digital Film Action” of the German Film Museum in Frankfurt/Main. By expanding the film education programme, young people are attracted through new digital and mobile formats like mobile phone or tablet computer films, which they know well and use every day. By using well-known technology, creative skills can be taught and deepened in a seemingly playful way.
Open-air stage for cultural education and integrationRossini’s “Cinderella” was performed at the Burgfestspiele in Bad Vilbel in 2013 in coop-eration with the Frankfurt Academy for Music and Performing Arts. The opera for children had been tailored to a young audience. The tunes and lyrics had been rearranged for the target group and a special production had been devised. The Aventis Foundation supported the project in its sponsoring programme “eXper-imente”, particularly to make possible the theatre education work before the performance.
How to be a curatorIn September and October 2013, the Palm Gar-den Frankfurt exhibited three open-air installa-tions by the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica. In one of the walk-in pavilions, dance and music per-formances, readings and films by contemporary directors were put on show. The programme had been developed by students of the MA course “Curatorial Studies – theory/history/criticism” in cooperation with the Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art. The Aventis Foundation supports the course, which is unique in Germany.

Alte Oper Frankfurt
New Ways to Concerts 2013-2015 Ideas for a New Concert Experience
The spectators at the performance of Xavier Le Roy in the Alte Oper Frankfurt felt
like musicians of a symphony orchestra. Several dozen loudspeakers from which Igor
Strawinsky’s “Le Sacre du Printemps” was sounding out had been put up under the
seats in the auditorium. The experience was intensified through a change of perspective
of the performer, who had turned to the audience as a conductor. With his movements,
he interpreted the music and built a bridge between hearing and seeing. He conducted
the auditorium and provided the audience with a listening experience of particular
intensity.
This performance was the first of the project series “New Ways to Concerts”, which the
Alte Oper Frankfurt has been putting on as of the 2013/2014 season. It combines differ-
ent art forms and genres, offers unusual spatial and tonal experiences and makes con-
temporary works and premieres possible.
The Aventis Foundation has agreed to a three-year partnership with the Alte Oper and
sponsors “New Ways to Concerts” with a total of € 300,000 during this period.

Foundation Chair New Music
New Music – Musical Adventures
During the summer semester 2013, the Academy for Music and Performing Arts created
its first foundation chair. The chair for “The practice of interpretation and the teaching of
new music”, which has been set up for an initial period of three years, was made possi-
ble through the support of the Aventis Foundation and two other foundations in Frank-
furt. The chair is held by the internationally renowned cellist Lucas Fels, who has helped
produce several hundred premieres in the field of contemporary chamber music with
several ensembles. His close cooperation with well-known contemporary composers has
led to numerous works that have been dedicated to him. He has been teaching regularly
at the summer school for new music in Darmstadt since 2006.
With the support of the foundation chair, which is unique in its form in all of Germany,
the Aventis Foundation is aiming at the promotion of contemporary music. Apart from
teaching basic knowledge in practice and theory, Professor Fels wants to open doors for
the students and show them new ranges of interpretation. He will teach them openness
towards new music and will help them learn modern and unconventional playing tech-
niques. Apart from this, the chair will receive important incentives from networks and
cooperations with composers, bodies of sound, ensembles and institutions of the new
music community.

Ensemble Modern
The dervishes are dancing again
In early May 2013, the Ensemble Modern in cooperation with the Frankfurt opera per-
formed Heiner Goebbels’ “Landschaft mit entfernten Bekannten” at the Bockenheim
Depot for the first time in a new “Frankfurt version”, which was made possible through
significant support from the Aventis Foundation.
The title of this contemporary piece is reminiscent of paintings by the old masters,
which are not arranged in a central perspective but treat all subjects equally. Even scenes
at a great distance do not appear less important or out of focus and may be perceived in
great detail. This means that there is no fixed central space on the stage and the specta-
tors choose their own way of seeing. True to this principle, Heiner Goebbels does not
present us with a linear plot in his composition but a kaleidoscope of constantly chang-
ing images.
With the production of the opera by Ensemble Modern, an important work of contem-
porary music has been made reproducible in its newly arranged version. This exemplary
project is part of a repertory of own productions and commissioned compositions which
Ensemble Modern is constantly expanding in order to offer them to festivals and stages
worldwide. The Aventis Foundation has been supporting this concept with a three-year
sponsorship since 2011.

Rhein-Main Culture
A Base for Contemporary Dance
Within the context of a cooperation between foundations, the Aventis Foundation
extended the sponsorship of the initiative TANZLABOR_21 for another two years and
in doing so continued a sustainable partnership which has been further developing
contemporary dance in the Frankfurt-Rhein-Main region and supporting young talents
at a very high professional level since 2010. In addition, the team of TANZLABOR_21
has developed a variety of activities aimed at professional dance performers and dance
students as well as at an audience and children and teenagers with an affinity for dance.
Apart from the founding of two new practice-oriented courses for dance training, the
activities include gaining stage experience through dance drama productions which
the graduates develop and realise in collaboration with experienced choreographers.
Furthermore, there are regular courses for professionals and students, medical advice
for dancers and the biannual “summer lab”, which includes workshops and perfor-
mances. Children and teenagers are enabled to see dance as contemporary art form in
partner schools, in special dance projects and in annual events with taster courses and
performances like the dance festivals “Tanztag Rhein-Main” and the “Tanztage Lieder-
bach”.
TANZLABOR_21 is realised by the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in cooperation with the
Academy for Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt and the Institute for Applied Theatre
Studies at the University of Gießen within the network of the Hessian theatre academy.

Musica Viva – A Concert Series by the Bayerischer Rundfunk
A Saturday of Light
At the end of June 2013, the Bayerischer Rundfunk presented the first German complete
performance of the opera “Samstag aus Licht” by Karlheinz Stockhausen within the
context of the concert series “Musica Viva”. This large and ambitious production of con-
temporary art music was supported by the Aventis Foundation. The work is part of the
opera cycle “Licht – Die sieben Tage der Woche”, which Stockhausen had produced in a
creative period between 1977 and 2004 and with which he presented a new definition of
the various forms of concert music, scenic music and religious cult music. The content
of the work focuses on the time that man has been given including all its themes and
energies. So the opera has been wholly dedicated to the drama of the archangel Michael
fighting the devil.
The “quasi concertante” version went more or less without stage setting but was per-
formed including the gestures and activities inherent to the work and the most im-
portant costumes. The four scenes were performed in the form of individual events at
specially selected venues over the course of several days. Several vocal and instrumental
soloists, the ensemble musikFabrik as renowned Stockhausen interpreters as well as the
choir and symphony orchestra of the Bayerischer Rundfunk performed together in this
impressive production under the guidance of the conductors Rupert Huber and Ingo
Metzmacher. The performances were characterised by dream scenes of chamber music,
spatial music for a large ensemble, wild diabolical dances and a detailed composition of
a choir procession with organ and brass instruments.

Deutsche Oper Berlin
New Ways of Thinking Opera
The Deutsche Oper Berlin presented three consecutive performances of the opera “Così
fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in its “Tischlerei” in October. The performanc-
es were the result of a research project of the Graz Academy of Art spanning several
years. Under the guidance of the director and university teacher Barbara Beyer, three
young teams of directors produced the piece in three different ways with three different
ensembles.
In doing so, they investigated possible forms of musical theatre for the audience of the
21st century and the question whether a performance can represent a further dimension
which allows for uncontrolled actions, fails expectation and puts emphasis on surprise
and irritation. The performances were accompanied by a four-day symposium on “The
future of opera”, which brought together artists from all genres, academics, artistic di-
rectors and journalists for round tables and lectures. The Aventis Foundation supported
the research project and the three performances in Berlin.

Mahler Chamber Orchestra
A Pumping Station Full of New Concert Formats
In 2013, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the arts centre Radialsystem V in Berlin
presented for the third time “A radial night with the MCO and guests”. The musicians
played on various levels and in various spaces throughout the venue and performed a
multi-faceted repertory ranging from romanticism to contemporary compositions with
orchestral instrumentation and in formations of chamber music. This was the continu-
ation of a successful concept which enables the audience to make up their own pro-
gramme for a varied evening, although the large crowd pushed the venue to its limits.
The Aventis Foundation again supported this new project by the Mahler Chamber
Orchestra which explores new forms of concerts in this former pumping station, builds
bridges between different forms of art and once more demonstrates outstanding artistic
quality, a great pleasure in experimenting and versatility.
In the great hall, works by Wagner and Schumann were complemented by large video
projections on the stage and on the side walls, which added another dimension to the
perception. Together with the Berlin dance ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests, musicians
of the MCO presented extracts from the international “Dialogue Project 2013”, for which
they had explored and filled with new life the space of an abandoned colonial palace in
Calcutta – an impressive example for the expressive power of dance and choreography.

Junge Deutsche Philharmonie
Onomatopoeia in the Berlin Philharmonie
The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie under the direction of Jonathan Nott presented
Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, a tremendous symphonic work, on a tour through
large German concert halls in spring 2013. With the four movements of this sophisti-
cated masterpiece, the composer orchestrated his personal farewell and in doing so, he
entered deeply into the field of new music in terms of sound design and form as early as
the beginning of the 20th century.
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra had invited the ensemble of the Junge Deutsche
Philharmonie to give this special, free guest performance, which was supported by the
Aventis Foundation as part of the promotion of culture and ongoing support for young
talents.
Since its founding in 1974, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie has been travelling through
Germany and the world as a cultural ambassador. The orchestra offers excellent music
students a brilliant opportunity to gain experience in performing in the sense of dedica-
ted support for young talents and complements their studies by developing their com-
petencies and by allowing them to try out new things.

Finding Out How Nanomachines Work
Dr Helmut Grubmüller, a globally renowned expert on theoretical and computer-based
biophysics, was awarded the Rolf Sammet Visiting Professorship 2013 for his fundamen-
tal research on the role of complex proteins within cells.
These proteins, which are called nanomachines, have a diameter of a ten millionth
millimetre and are the smallest engines in the world. In order to explore their role in the
conversion of energy within cells down to the atomic detail, Helmut Grubmüller’s team
has developed sophisticated computer simulations.
Helmut Grubmüller was born in 1965, studied physics at the Technische Universität
München, where he also completed his PhD in 1994. Following an EMBO scholarship
at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, he established the study group
“Theoretical Molecular Biophysics” at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chem-
istry in Göttingen in 1988. He has been the director of this Max-Planck-Institute since
2005.
The Rolf Sammet Visiting Professorship belongs to the oldest visiting professorships at
the Goethe University. It was endowed by Hoechst plc. in 1985 and is currently award-
ed by the Rolf Sammet Fund of the Aventis Foundation in cooperation with the Goethe

Raymond Barre Visiting Professorship, Frankfurt
A Renowned Economist at the Frankfurt Campus
In a joint event with the German-French Association in 2013, the Goethe University
presented to the public the eighth Raymond Barre foundation visiting professor in the
department of economics: Jean-Charles Rochet. The Aventis Foundation took over a
five-year sponsorship for the visiting professorship at the Goethe University in 2011.
Jean-Charles Rochet is professor for banking at the Institute for Banking and Finance at
the University of Zürich and is one of the internationally most cited banking experts.
His book on “Microeconomics of Banking”, which was published by MIT-Press, has
become standard reference for economists and has been translated into several languag-
es. His research covers a large variety of aspects of banking from the problem of fees for
credit card payments to a profound analysis of the financial crisis and the question how
risk management can be set up in a new and stable way in our currently unsettled times.
Together with the German-French Association, the support of the Aventis Foundation
makes it possible each year to invite a renowned French-speaking economist to give
lectures and seminars on the Frankfurt campus. Students and teachers are able to gain
an insight into the latest, cutting-edge research while at the same time improving their
French specialist terminology.

Hoechst Award for University Teachers
New classes of substances in materials research
The private lecturer Dr Florian Kraus of the Technische Universität München was
awarded the Hoechst Award for University Teachers 2013, which is awarded by the
Aventis Foundation in cooperation with the Chemical Industry Fund. The award aims
at supporting scientists with a habilitation thesis on their way to securing a university
chair.
Florian Kraus’ research focuses on fluoric chemistry and fluoride-ion acceptors in liquid
ammonia. His research has led to new procedures for the synthesis of transition metal
fluorides and nitrides which have been revolutionary for anorganic material research.
Florian Kraus studied chemistry at the University of Regensburg from 1998 to 2003 and
went on to do his PhD at the universities of Hamburg and Regensburg. In January 2006,
he transferred to the Technische Universität München, where he established the junior
study group “Fluorine Chemistry” and completed his habilitation thesis in May 2011.
The focus of the Hoechst Award for University Teachers is on chemistry/biochemistry.
The financial means were provided by the Aventis Foundation. The Chemical Industry

Hoechst Scholarship for PhD Students
Basic Research on Biosynthesis
Moritz Schmidt was awarded the Hoechst Scholarship for PhD Students 2013 for his
outstanding achievements in the field of life science. The scholarship is awarded annual-
ly through the Foundation Scholarship Fund of the Association of the Chemical Industry
(VCI) in cooperation with the Aventis Foundation.
In his PhD thesis, Moritz Schmidt focuses on an aspect of basic research on peptide
biosynthesis. He develops systems for the production of proteins and peptides with
tailor-made chemical tasks right inside the cell, which allow for new reactions in the
interactions of DNA and RNA. The resulting functional groups lead to numerous appli-
cations in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy and diagnostics.
Moritz Schmidt was born in Tübingen in 1986. He studied life science with a focus on
chemistry at the University of Konstanz. Following a very good bachelor’s degree, he
was accepted into the so-called “fast-track programme” of the MA course, which al-
lowed him to start his PhD thesis without prior completion of an MA thesis.
The Hoechst Scholarship has been awarded by the Aventis Foundations in cooperation
with the Chemical Industry Fund since 2010: The Fund is responsible for applications,
evaluation, awarding the scholarship and looking after the scholarship holders, while
the Aventis Foundation provides the financial means.
