Each component was removedwith utmost care, broken pieceswere collected together ready forreconstruction at the factory.

Temporary lamp baseswere manufacturedand installed whilst theoriginals were restored.

Tower Bridge is one of London’s most famouslandmarks and probably the most photographedbridge in the world. Having stood for over acentury, some of its cast-iron components areshowing signs of decay. Back at the factory, the componentswere reassembled and carefullymeasured before being stripped ofover twenty layers of paint!

Stripping back a century of paintrevealed the crisp detail of theoriginal mouldings, some of whichhad to be re-attached due tocracking and corrosion.

Broken lugs werefound, re-welded anddrilled to accept theoriginal tie-rods.

The repaired componentsare bolted together and ifnecessary machined true. Finally each component isprimed, rebuilt andmeasured for fit.

Gas fusion welding requires the composition ofthe iron in the damaged component to beanalysed, enabling bespoke filler rods to be castto achieve the repair. A custom-built furnace isconstructed around the component within whichthe welding takes place. Heat is appliedgradually to allow the furnace to reach atemperature of 5800c at which point the metalaround the repair is melted and the filler rods fillthe damaged area. The component is cooledgradually and the repair evaluated.

The damaged areas are ground outready for gas fusion welding. The

repair is then cleaned up ready forfinal machining and painting.
