Welcome to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. This Community Profile has been designed to give visitors and potential investors easy access to the amenities and services of our community.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is fortunate to offer an exceptional quality of life environment with beautiful scenery, ample access to shopping and services, a state of the art hospital, an airport with the best infrastructure between Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto, a wide social service network, parks, libraries and a multitude of recreational opportunities.

Economic development can best be described in termsof objectives - the creation of jobs and wealth, and the improvement of quality of life. But economic development must also be seen as a process thatinvolves all aspects of a community and influencesgrowth and restructuring of an economy to enhance theeconomic well being of a community.

Having hired an economic development officer in 2004,the implementation of an Economic Development Planfor the Town of South Bruce Peninsula is an importantnext step in guiding the Town’s economic developmentdecision making and realizing benefits for the wholecommunity. It also represents the basis on which to create a vision for the Town’s economic future.

In positioning our community, we have focused our economic development efforts on enhancing industrialdevelopment in the area; the continued revitalization ofour downtowns; opportunities for additional residentialdevelopment including waterfront development; supporting activities for our agricultural communitythat will ensure its long term viability; and an enhancedtourism product that will continue to attract visitors toour area for years to come.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is committed to ahealthy and prosperous future for our residents and businesses and will continue to play an active role in supporting and nurturing local business development.

A Gateway Location

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is located at the gateway to Ontario's spectacular Bruce Peninsula. Thearea starts at Provincial Highway 21 and heads northalong the Lake Huron shoreline through the communi-ties of Sauble Beach, Oliphant and Red Bay, and northfrom Provincial Hwy No. 6 through Hepworth andWiarton. Wiarton and the Village of Colpoy’s Bay arenestled in Colpoy’s Bay with vistas of Georgian Bay.

A lower tier municipality located in the County ofBruce, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula was createdin 1999 as a result of the amalgamation of the formerTownships of Albemarle, Amabel, the Village ofHepworth and the Town of Wiarton.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula's location positionsit within 2 to 3 hours of Ontario's major urban marketsof Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo and only25 minutes from the City of Owen Sound.

The Town also benefits from a well established transportation network. The Town's access to ProvincialHighways 4, 6, 9, 86, and 21 (all toll-free highways withno weight restrictions) provide connecting routes toHighway 401 and major Southern Ontario and NorthernUnited States markets.

Moderate Climate

Due to the Town’s position between two large bodies ofwater, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, it enjoys a muchmore moderate climate than other nearby communities.In the summer, the Bruce Peninsula usually has moresunshine than other parts of southern Ontario, as thelarge bodies of water deflect weather systems awayfrom South Bruce Peninsula.

In the winter, large amounts of moisture that evaporateoff the water create heavy cloud cover. This moisturehelps the Town have a longer, frost-free season in thefall, yet keeps the Town colder for a longer period oftime in the spring. The chart below illustrates the weather statistics for the Town of South BrucePeninsula.

Key Points of Interest

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has many keypoints of interests that contribute to high quality of lifefor its residents and serve as attractions to a growingnumber of visitors to the area. People come to the Townto hunt, fish, hike, camp, snowmobile, and relax at thebeach, among other activities.

Some key points of interest in the town include:

The Bruce Trail, which runs along the NiagaraEscarpment overlooking Georgian Bay, is Ontario’slongest and most popular hiking trail with a lengthof 780 kilometres.

The M.S. CHI-CHEEMAUN Ferry, which operatesbetween Tobermory (at the tip of Bruce Peninsula)to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island.

Wiarton Marina/Bluewater Park, is a full servicemarina located along the east side of Georgian Bayin Wiarton. Nearby Bluewater Park has a picnicarea, large play equipment for kids and a swimming pool. Wiarton's Historic Train Station,which was originally constructed in 1904, wasrestored and relocated to Bluewater Park where itnow serves as an Information Centre providingassistance to visitors.

Spirit Rock Conservation Area, north of Wiarton,has the ruins of an early 1900's mansion that wasthe centre of culture in the area. The site features apath along the shore, an impressive view from the top of the Niagara Escarpment, a spiral staircase tothe water's edge, and access to the Bruce Trail. Thename “Spirit Rock” is derived from a legend involving an Indian maiden who threw herself overa cliff after being disowned by her tribe. Today,

when the lighting and angles are just right, the faceof the maiden can be seen in the cliffs.

The Gallery of Early Canadian Flight, located in acafe setting overlooking the Wiarton-KeppelDistrict Airport, is a collection of aircraft models,archival photos, artist's prints and videos of historic moments in Canada's aviation history.

Sauble Beach, is the second longest freshwaterbeach in the world. The Sauble Beach area alsooffers marvellous attractions, such as: Sauble FallsProvincial Park, The Rankin River Canoe Route,Sauble Speedway and Sauble Beach Amusements.In 2002 Sauble Beach was voted the number onebeach in Ontario by the Toronto Star and in 2004was named one of the top 10 beaches in Canada byMacLean's Magazine.

Sauble Beach is also a candidate to receive the BlueFlag, an international award for clean beaches. Toqualify for this international award, beaches mustmeet 27 specific criteria based on water quality,environmental management, environmental education, safety and services. If awarded, the Blue Flag will fly at Sauble Beach in 2006

The Oliphant Fen, a naturalist’s delight, is a boardwalk built by local field naturalists which canbe accessed on the Shore Road north of Oliphant.This fen showcases rare orchids such as the ram’shead orchid, special flowers, such as the indianplantain, the insectivorous pitcher plant, lady slipper, and many other wild flowers.

Golf Courses. Four beautiful golf courses exist inthe Town of South Bruce Peninsula. Three arelocated between Hepworth and Sauble Beach andthe forth is located north of Hepworth.

The Bruce Peninsula Mountain Biking AdventurePark. The park comprises a 22 km network ofmountain bike trails at various levels of difficulty.There are a wide variety of technical trail featuressuch as log rides, suspension bridges, teeter totters,and elevated boardwalks. The Park is about a 10-minute drive north east of Wiarton, and is free of charge.

The Wiarton Willie Festival. The annual WiartonWillie Festival is the largest winter festival in theGrey Bruce region. The festivities and excitement ofFebruary 2 draws international media coverageand more than 20,000 visitors and residents annually to witness Canada's groundhog soothsayer's prediction for the end of winter.

The Purple Valley Maple Syrup Festival. Everyyear on Easter Saturday the Purple Valley Women'sInstitute along with a horde of volunteers, stage thePeninsula's largest Maple Syrup Festival. Sugar-bush tours, pancakes, petting zoo, arts andcrafts and pony rides all add up to one adventurous morning. The day winds up with adance at 9:00 pm with the Midnite Blue live band.

Bruce County Attractions. The entire Bruce Countyhas approximately 51 attractions, including museums, galleries, animal-oriented attractions,performing arts events and venues, sports-oriented,water-oriented and history-oriented attractions.Further, there are 18 golf course, 23 marinas, and 18parks, conservation areas and trails available to thepublic for day and/or overnight use.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula offers a variety ofservices to residents and visitors alike, including motels,cottage facilities, bed and breakfast accommodations,and various camping facilities. The downtown areas ofthe towns and villages also provide a variety of retail,entertainment, dining and personal services. SaubleBeach has a Value Mart and Wiarton contains a newlyrenovated IGA Garden Centre. Other local

conveniences include a Liquor Store and Beer Store inboth Sauble Beach and Wiarton, and nationally recognized department and hardware stores.

In addition, to the range of local services, nearby OwenSound offers downtown shopping as well as theHeritage Place Mall Shopping Centre which is anchoredby Food Basics, Sears, and Zellers.

Wiarton-Keppel Airport InitiativeThe Wiarton-Keppel District Airport is sited on anescarpment bluff of 820 acres overlooking Colpoy’s Bayand the limestone cliffs of the beautiful Bruce Peninsula.The facility has the best infrastructure between Sault Ste.Marie and Toronto, with the longest, widest and flattestmain paved runway (5021 feet long and 150 feet wide).The airport has superior approach lighting and instrumentation, and a two-story terminal with passenger and pilot lounges and facilities. The airport can accommodate small aircraft and large corporate DC9s, 727s and 737s. It has a Point of Entrystatus for customs and immigration and operates 24/7,year round.

The Wiarton-Keppel District Airport is seeking aninvestor interested in developing recreational facilitiessuch as a resort, golf course, airpark and light industrialenterprises for the extensive airport lands. A market survey has been conducted to determine interest in theairpark. A major interest is the development of a touristair charter business which has the ability to enhance ourgrowing tourism market. Water, sewer, hydro and natural gas services border the airport for access.

The Bruce Peninsula, a UNESCO designated WorldBiosphere Preserve, is minutes away by automobile, asis the community of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula(Wiarton) where there is a fine hospital and excellentshopping. The scenic City of Owen Sound with a majorshopping mall and plazas, box stores and superb

medical facilities is only 30 minutes away by car.Toronto is a half hour by air. The airport houses aWeather Canada office that provides reports to recreational boaters and pilots. The airport has excellent approach lighting and is certified by Transport Canada.

Peninsula Shores District SchoolThe Peninsula Shores District School located in Wiarton, is a new facility combining both elementaryand secondary school students. The town's original limestone high school has been designated as a heritage property, opening the door for the creative re-use of the building for new commercial / residential / institutional uses.

The new school has many benefits for the students andthe community. A theatre with permanent seating willbe provided, as well as a full-scale drama room, a cafeteria, a running track and a space for a playgroundand community events.

Wiarton Hospital Wiarton Hospital was built in 1994, and provides theTown of South Bruce Peninsula with state of the arthealth care facilities. The hospital is comprised of 22beds, and includes both emergency and ambulatoryservices.

The hospital offers obstetrics, dental surgery and mental health and addictions programs. An allied health building for doctor’s offices and community services, such as the Bruce Mental Health SupportServices, is also on site along with the Victoria Order of Nurses and the Community Care Access Centre.

Health CareThe Town of South Bruce Peninsula has numeroushealth care facilities to serve the community. WiartonHospital provides emergency and ambulance services,and is comprised of 22 beds. In addition, the Grey-Bruce Regional Health Centre, located in Owen Sound, is the area’s largest and best equippedfacility. This regional hospital serves as an educationaland training hospital, and acts as the regional referral centre for Grey and Bruce counties with over 50 specialists on staff.

There are six general practitioners located in Wiarton and a further two practitioners in Sauble Beach. TheTown also benefits from the presence of chiropractic,dentistry and optometry services.

Nursing Services for the Town of South Bruce Peninsulaare available through the Victoria Order of Nurses(VON), Para Med Home Health Care, Olsten HealthServices, and Care Partners are all administrated inOwen Sound. EducationBruce County has an exceptional education system, consisting of the Blue Water District School Board whichis responsible for the public schools and the Bruce-GreyRoman Catholic Separate School Board of Educationwhich is responsible for the separate schools. Within theTown of South Bruce Peninsula there are three Primary& Secondary school facilities:
