TheTownsvilleHospitalisanaccreditedtrainingsiteforANZCA,andtraineescancompleteuptothreeyears of their training in Townsville. The Northern rotation allows anaesthetic trainees to movebetweenTownsville,Mackay,CairnsandDarwintocompletetheirtraining.

• beacitizenofAustraliaorNewZealandorapermanentresidentofAustralia,• havecurrentgeneralregistrationwiththeMedicalBoardofAustralia,• be registered, or eligible for registration,with the Australian andNew Zealand College of

Anaesthetictrainingtakesaminimumoffiveyearsinaccreditedpositions.

Followingbeing accepted for a position at an accreditedhospital, there is an initial sixmonthsofintroductorytrainingwheredevelopmentofthebasicskillsrequiredforatraineeareemphasised.
Followingsatisfactorycompletionofintroductorytraining,18monthsofbasictrainingcommence,inwhich time theprimaryexamination is required tobepassed.Thisphaseemphasises learning thebasicsciencesthatunderpinthespecialty.
Twoyearsofadvancedtrainingfollowsbasictraining,inwhichthecompletionofarangeofspecialtyunits(e.g.cardiac,paediatrics)andthefinalexaminationarerequired.
Thefinalyearoftrainingisnominatedasprovisionalfellowshiptraining,andiscommencedonceallexaminations,advancedtrainingtimeandspecialtyunitshavebeencompleted.

TheAustralianGeneralPracticeTraining(AGPT)ProgramistheleadingtrainingprogramformedicalgraduateswishingtopursueacareeringeneralpracticeinAustralia.TheAustralianMedicalCouncilhasaccreditedtheAustralianCollegeofRuralandRemoteMedicine(ACRRM)andtheRoyalAustralianCollegeofGeneralPractitioners(RACGP)totrainforgeneralpractice.AGPTregistrarsmustbeenrolledinoneorbothoftheseprograms.

TheAustralianGovernmentcurrentlyfunds1,500trainingpositionseachyear.
Traineerequirements-howtobecomeanAGPTtrainee
Mandatory hospital rotations must be completed by doctors in the post-graduate years. ThesemandatoryhospitalrotationsdonothavetobecompletedbeforeapplicationandentryintotheAGPTProgram.Wherepossible,all rotations shouldbecompletedprior to thesecondyearof theAGPTProgram.
Forthe2018Cohortonwards,theRACGPandACRRMwilleachrunseparateselectionprocessesforentryintotheAGPTProgram.

Each college has an online learning platform and runs educational sessions for GP registrars. Thecolleges accredit and monitor the Regional Training Organisations, such as GMT to ensure thatvocationaltrainingmeetstheircurriculum,standardsanddelegationrequirements.

ApplicationforselectionintotheACDTrainingProgramisadvertisedinJanuary/Februaryeachyearfor admission into theprogram for the following year. The Training Program is advertised via theCollegeNewssectionoftheCollegewebsiteandinTheAustraliannewspaper.
Tobeeligibleforconsiderationforselection,applicantsmust:
• beregisteredformedicalpracticeinAustralia,• havepermanentresidencystatusinAustraliaorpermittedtoremaininAustraliaindefinitely
and• havecompletedorbelikelytosatisfactorilycompleteaminimumoftwoyearsofacceptable
postgraduate training (PGY 1 and PGY 2 accredited positions) in a teaching hospital orequivalentrecognisedbytheCollegebythetimeofcommencingthetrainingprogram.
Applicantsareassessedacrosssevenareaswhichcontributetotheoverallratingthatdeterminestheapplicant’sprogressiontothenextround.Areasthatareassessedinclude:
• academicperformance,• employmenthistory/clinicalexperience(relativetotimesincegraduation,)• academicpresentationsandpublications,• community/socialinvolvement,• leadership,• strivingforexcellenceand• previousdermatologicalexperience.
Note:TheCollegeislookingforwell-roundedmedicalpractitionerstoentertraining.Focusingononearea to the detriment of others will tend to lower your overall score. Previous dermatologicalexperiencewillbeviewedfavourably.

Townsville offers a variety of different paediatric rotations. General paediatric rotations includemanagingadelightfulpaediatricswardthat iswell-staffedwithresidents,anoutpatientwardwithoncologypatientsandavarietyofsub-specialtyclinics.Communityrotationsallowtraineestoattendoutreach clinics and furtherhospital-based sub-specialty clinics aswell asmanage the teachingofresidentsand registrars. HospitalEDandallowlotsofexperienceinpaediatricresuscitationsandrapidresponses.Six-monthneonatology rotations allow extensive experience with neonatal resuscitation and managingventilatedneonatesaswellasastandardspecialcarenursery.Six-monthpaediatric intensivecarerotationsprovideexperience inspecialistsupportofseriouslyunwellchildren,ofbothsurgicalandmedicalcauses.

The Townsville Hospital’s O&G Department has five full-time O&G specialists and two part-timeVMOs.ThehospitalisatertiaryreferralcentreforobstetricsandgynaecologyandhastheonlyLevel6 neonatal care facility outside of a metropolitan area. We offer women general obstetrics andgynaecologycare,andsub-specialistservicesinmaternal-fetalmedicineanduro-gynaecologyonsite,and a three-weekly FIFO gynae-oncology service. The department offers specialist, diploma andcertificatetraininginasupportiveenvironment,withexposuretomostsub-specialties.

RANZCOGTrainingProgram
Membership/Fellowship training involves six years (276 weeks) of post-graduate hospital-basedtrainingandassessment.
ThespecialisttrainingprogramcomprisestheCoreTrainingProgram(fouryears,or184weeks),andthe Advanced Training Program (a further two years, or 92 weeks), which culminates in theFellowshipoftheCollege(FRANZCOG).TraineescannotprogresstoAdvancedTraininguntiltheyhavesatisfactorilycompletedallCoreTrainingRequirements.
Thefour-year(184weeks)CoreProgramincludesthefollowing:
• rotationthroughaminimumofthreedifferenthospitals,withatleast46weeksinatertiaryhospitaland23weeksinaruralhospital,
• logged clinical work in O&G resulting in attainment of prescribed competency levels inspecifiedprocedures,
• utilisingtheresourcesofCLIMATE,theRANZCOGe-learningplatform,• formativeandsummativeassessments, includingthree-monthlyappraisalsandsix-monthly
assessmentreportsand• experienceingynaecologicaloncology.
TheAdvancedProgramfollowstheCoreProgram.Itcomprisesthefinaltwoyears(92weeks)oftheFRANZCOGTrainingProgram.ThecontentoftheAdvancedProgramisnotprescribedbytheCollege.TraineesenteringtheAdvancedProgramarerequiredtosubmitaplaneachyearwhichisdesignedtomeettheirowneducationalneeds.

Asageneralrule,theRadiologyEducationandTrainingCommitteeencouragesexperienceinabroadspectrumof clinicaldisciplinesprior toundertaking radiology training.TheQueenslandRadiologyTrainingProgramhastwice-yearlyselectionforintakesinTerm1(February)andTerm3(August).

The radiology training program is a five-year program conducted in two phases (current from 1December,2009):
• Phase1:Threeyearsofgeneralradiologytraining• Phase 2: Two years of systems-focused (as distinguished from sub-specialty) rotations for
advancedradiologytraining.
Duringthefive-yeartrainingperiod,traineestaketwosetsofexaminations(Part1andPart2).TheRadiology Curriculum contains bothMedical Expert and non-Medical Expert content and learningobjectives, in keeping with the principles of the CanMEDS 2000medical professional framework,developedbyTheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansandSurgeonsofCanada.
OncetraineeshavecompletedfiveyearsoftrainingandpassedthePart2examinationandbecomeaFellowoftheCollege,theymaydecidetoobtainadditionalsub-specialtytrainingthroughadvancedtraining positions in Australia, New Zealand and/or overseas. These opportunities allow recentlyqualifiedradiologiststoconcentrateononeareaofthespecialtyofradiology,suchasbreastimaging,interventionalradiology,musculoskeletalradiology,orpaediatricimaging.
RadiationOncologyatTHHS
RadiationOncology is thesecondmost importantspecialty involved in thecareofCancerpatientsafterSurgery.TheFacultyofRadiationOncologywithintheRoyalAustralianandNewZealandCollegeofRadiologistsistheoverarchingtrainingauthorityforAustralia,andyouwillberequiredtobecomeastudentmemberoftheCollege.
Radiationisoftendeliveredinacurativesetting–ofteninassociationwithplannedSurgery(adjuvant),oraloneoftentopreserveimportantstructurese.g.larynx,breast,anus;orinapalliativesettinge.g.torelievepainorbleeding.
TraininginRadiationOncologycanonlystartaftertwoyearsofgeneralistpracticeaftergraduationfromMedicalSchool.Ifinterestedinthespecialty,itwouldbeidealtodoaterminRadiationOncology,andmeettheteam.
Getting onto the training program entails application through the Queensland Health registrarapplicationprocessinJune/Julyeachyear,afterinterview.
Thereisaformalfive-yeartrainingprogramwhichrotatestraineesaroundthestate,andtherearetwoformalexaminationstakenduringtraining.
Trainingisgivenintheserelevantsubjectareas–Anatomy,RadiationPhysics,Statistics,Radiobiology,GeneralPathology,TumourPathology,RadiationOncology,andGeneralOncology.
AftercompletionofPart1andPart2exams,itishopedthataFellowshipYearcanbeundertakenaspartofyourfive-yeartrainingprogram-usuallyleadingtoasub-specialisation.
