ABSTRACT SUMMARY

Our group decided on making this company as the main discussion in our group assignment

as we had looked up on the company main mission is to produce the best coffee in Kuching,

Sarawak. The company is only specialized in Kuching. This company are specialized in

coffee and western food making. This company inspired us in many ways, especially when

the Operation Manager helped us doing our research and gave us a nice treat during our visit

at the first branch of Bing! Coffee which is at Padungan. We do not only want to learn on the

company’s management but we also wants to apply our knowledge and understanding

towards the four main basic topic of management which is planning, organizing, leading and

controlling to our discussion.

Bing! Coffee is a company that is very unique in terms of style and it cares for the quality,

marketability and other skills to produces a good quality company. Its main objective is to

produce a high quality coffee and western foods.

HISTORY

Established in 2004, bing! coffee has become a go-to place for a good cup of coffee. The café

cosy Balinese-inspired ambiance is perfect for those who want to get away from the hustle

and bustle of life. bing!'s first outlet is located at Padungan Road, Kuching, Sarawak. The

first outlet was opened at Padungan. Padungan outlet was opened in 2004 where the baker

factory was allocated at Padungan as well. All the foods was made at the same place and it

was served directly after it was been made. Padungan outlet is not only the place where the

customers to hang out but it worked as a factory as well back in 2004.

After the Padungan outlet was established, the second outlet was established at Premier 101

two years after the Padungan outlet was in business. The factory is then move to another

place which is near the clinic of Tanah Putih. It is now allocated at Padungan Road as well.

Another 2 years later the third outlet of Bing! Coffee was opened at Bormill Estate just beside

the Tarot Café at third mile. This third outlet is one of the smallest outlet of Bing! Coffee.

The fourth outlet of Bing! Coffee is located at The Hills Shopping Mall which is in Kuching

Town. Since it is located in town it is one of the tourists main attraction in Kuching. It is one

of a kind coffee shop in Kuching, Sarawak.

The last outlet to opened is at Green Heights. It was opened in February, 2012 this year. It is

the latest outlet from Bing! Coffee. It was also the first two storey outlet of Bing! Coffee.

Not to forget this year ahead the first outlet which is Padungan was also under renovation to

level up the quality of the coffee shop.

PLANNING

Planning is defined as the organization’s goals, establishing an overall strategy for achieving

those goals and developing a comprehensive set of plans to integrate and coordinate

organizational work. The importance of planning of this company is planning provide a

foundation for all branches activities. Through planning the operation manager can

coordinate all the activities of the staffs so that the mission of the company can be achieve.

Besides that, planning also provide the direction of the company towards the operation

manager, supervisor and the staffs. Planning can minimize risk of loss of a certain products,

This company uses strategic planning. The definition of strategic planning is to focus on the

broad future of the company. The company look up for the demand of the customers and

internal resources to achieve the long term goals including the vision and mission of the

company. The vision is describe as what the company aspires to be in the long term. Since its

uses strategic planning, we can see every 2 years it established new branch of the company. It

also add up new menu during different seasons and occasions. The mission is describe as the

overall purpose of the company that exists with the three primary aspects. The mission of this

company are identify the purpose of the company and where it came up with the idea to built

up a coffee shop in Kuching, Sarawak.

The company planned to established this company because in Kuching, Sarawak its hard to

find a comfy and cozy place to hang out unlike in Kuala Lumpur. This company only can be

found in Kuching. This company planned to make the coffee shops as the phenomena in

Kuching. The company also planned to attracts tourists from other countries.

Every company has its own mission statement. The definition of mission statement is

purpose for which the reason why the company exists. In general, the company mission

reflects such information as what types of products or service that the company produces,

who the company customer to be and what important values it holds. The mission statement

of the company is to build up a cozy and comfy place to hangout for different group of people

from different ages and race. The products that the company produces are western foods like

Lasagna, Classic Tuna Baked, Bambini, Panini and many more. For coffee they produces

different types of coffee like Expresso, Café latte, Capuccino and other kinds of coffee. Other

than that the company also provide different products such as cakes and ice blended. For

cakes they produces New York Cheese Cake, Oreo Cheese Cake, American Chocolate,

Carrot cake and the special cake that they produces that came up from the demands of the

customers are the Tiramisu Cake. Then for the ice blended, they have several types of ice

blended which is Chocolate Ice Blended, Caramel Ice Blended, Tiramisu Ice Blended and

others.

ORGANIZING

Organizing is defined as the process of determining the task to be done, who will do them and

how does task will be manage and coordinated. It is also the process of establishing orderly

uses for all resources within the company management system.

Like other companies and institutions Bing! Coffee also have its own organizational chart.

Based on Bing! Coffee company organization chart, we can see that Bing! Coffee is

using tall structure. Basically tall structure is a type of organizational chart that is

divided into sections. Based on the diagram, Bing! Coffee organizational chart

consists of three section, which are strategic, executive and operation management.

In the strategic section of the organizational chart, it represents the company chart.

They are the staffs and the one who manage all of management. Their main task in

the strategic section is to have proper delegation of work, goals and performance

monitoring as well as important decision making.

On the other hand, in the executive section of the organizational chart, it represents

the Managing Director, Operation Manager, Head of account and other managing

staffs of the company. In this section, their roles are to be responsible for general

planning, monitoring, implementation of decisions and instructions as well as

decisions the managing board of the company.

In conclusion, it is proven that bing! Coffee is a firm organization and the tall

structure can determine the authority of each higher level workers.

LEADING

Leading is defined as the process of directing the behavior of others towards the

accomplishment of some objective causing individual to act in a certain way or to follow

particular course. In very outlet there will be one manager allocated to lead and train the

employees in other to achieve the company’s goals and become successful.

Leadership in Bing! Coffee seems to be resembled The Path- Goal Theory, which

emphasizing the leader’s role in clarifying for subordinates how they can achieve

high performance and its associated. This theory was developed Martin G.Evans

and Robert J. House.

There are four primary types of behaviour of the Path-Goal Theory that the company

practices.

The first phase is the Directive Behaviour :

The Operation Manager acts as the leader and the leader’s behaviour aimed at

telling their employees what to do and how to do it. The leader indicates what

performance goals that exist and precisely what must be done to achieve them. The

Operation Manager in Bing! Coffee trains the new workers what to do for the jobs

that they are assign to do.

The second phase is the Supportive Behaviour :

The leader behaviour aimed at being friendly with their employees in showing the

interest in them as human being. Through supportive behaviour, the leaders show

sensitivity to the personal needs of their employees. The operation manager in the

company helps most of the employees the veteran ones especially with special

treatment like the company helped the employees in fulfilling the needs of the

workers. Apart from that, the operation manager also provides meals for every

worker per day.

The third phase is the Participative Behaviour :

The leader behaviour in which suggestion from the employees are sought regarding

business operations with the result that are involved in making important

organizational decision. In this behaviour can be seen towards most of the drinks

and foods have been upgrades by the suggestion of the employees and customers

of the company.

The fourth phase is the Achievement Behaviour :

The leader aimed at challenging goals for their employees to reach and expressing

and demonstrating confidence that their employees will meet the challenges. The

Operational Manager makes the worker aim to be the best in every work that have

been assigns. Bing! Coffee have different types of jobs which is the server, prep,

cashier and barista. They are going to be train by the manager then the manager

motivates them to be the best among all.

CONTROLLING :

Control is defined as a systematic process through which managers regulate organizational

activities to make them consistent with expectations and help them to achieve predetermined

standards of performance. Control also involves regulation of activities and behaviours within

organizations and tries to adjust or bring conformity to objectives. Control is making

something happen the way it was plan to happen.

Control is also the process of monitoring activities to ensure that they are being accomplished

as planned or to ensure the desired results and correcting any significant deviations.

In this company it they uses three types of control to determine the primary mission and

to get the outcome that the one from producing a product.

a) The preventive or steering control :

Whereby the managing director provide with a proper plan or a blueprint to

prevent any problem throughout the transformation or the producing a product

process.

b) Concurrent or Screening control :

Whereby the supervisor monitor the work that they had directed to the lower staffs

to do and supervise the ongoing activities done by the worker of the outlets. This

focuses most on the transformation process during the production of the product.

c) Feedback or Corrective control :

Whereby takes place when after the product is being produce and it is going to be

test to make an improvement and to make a corrective action if there is a certain

mistakes or any handicap in the product to produce a better product.

This shows that bing! Coffee makes the worker feels homey and comfortable during work.

The principle of the company is as long as the worker do their job, be friendly and stay relax

they are likely to enjoy the work in bing! Coffee. This types of controlling method can

produce an effective and efficient works from each of the workers. Apart from that, it can less

the stress of the worker without a proper instruction it will definitely affects the workers

morale and can cause frustration of the worker. Bing! Coffee practices this kind of methods

to produce a good quality products. The company have a way to control the staffs which iss

using the a work schedule whereby the workers are separate and have their own shifts which

they will change every week so the worker does not feel easily bored by the same routine.

This shows that bing! Coffee practices schedule that have shifts. The morning shift starts at 9

until 4 in the afternoon where as the night shift starts at 4 until 12 in the morning for

weekdays and 4 until 1 in the morning for Fridays and Saturdays.

COMMUNICATION

Communication is defined as the interpersonal process of sending and receiving symbols or

orders with messages attached to share certain information with other individuals.

In terms of communication most of the high levels workers directs order to the operation

manager then the operation manager gives the order to the supervisor of every outlet. The

purpose of the communication is to avoid problems that will happen for example like a

misunderstanding between the staffs or even with the customers. There will be certain

consequences that will happen in every shop. In bing! Coffee, the company uses the formal

organization communication

Downward :

Whereby the operation manager of the company acts as the sender or the in between person

towards the managing director and the lower levels staffs. Mostly in downward

communication is when the managing director wants to give messages to the staffs of the

company.

Upward :

Whereby the supervisors or the subordinates to the operation managers. It contains the

information about the lower levels staffs of the company or the performance of the new

workers of the company.

Horizontal :

This type of communication usually common among the staffs of the same level. Its the

conversation of the staffs that works as a part time and full time of the company.

CONCLUSION

The conclusion is the company have the four main component of a management which are

planning, organizing, leading and controlling. This shows that this company practices the

four major components so it can produce effective and efficient workers for the company. So

this company practices each of them to also produce good products that could not be found

locally in Kuching, Sarawak.
