IT’S THE LAW…..and Regulated
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) requires that if a sign is needed somewhere, it must bear the same shape and color at all hours, as well as be retroreflective for night drivers. While only 25 percent of all travel occurs at night, more than 50 percent of all accidents happen then, which equates to about three times more than during the day, the DOT reported.

Traffic Signs 101
• Traffic Signs include stop, yield, do not enter, crossing, regulatory and speed limit signage. Each year, 1 in 4 traffic accident fatalities was due to speeding.
• • Pedestrian Signs include traffic/crossing and MUTCD school signs. Each year
100 children are killed walking to or from school, and another 25,000 are injured in school zone accidents.
• Traffic Control Signs include warning, construction and worksite notices.

MUTCD Compliance
School Zones Require Fluorescent Yellow Green signs with Superior day and nighttime visibility of Type IV or better reflectivity-(Diamond Grade) and they also comply with FHWA DOT23 CFR Part 655 national standard regulation.
Additional Traffic and Pedestrian Signs located near School Zones and on public roadways shall also be of a Prismatic reflective finish, but do not need to be fluorescent green.
Traffic Roadway Safety and Temporary Signs
Temporary Traffic Control- Construction Orange signs safely regulate traffic flow in work zones, incidents and planned roadway construction where road user conditions are affected.
MUTCDSurface and Roadway- Warning Yellow provide directional safety, guidance and conditions for drivers.
Why Parking?
• As operators of cars, vans and trucks, we largely do as we're told. We don't park where it says "No parking," we don't turn left when it says "No left turn." But Accidents do happen.
• Vehicle operators take for granted the amount and accuracy of the markings required for safe and efficient parking lots. It's important those lots communicate the rules effectively, and the key to that is proper signage.
• Over 23%of all insurance claims and 21% of traffic accidents occur on private property.

Parking Signs include no parking, fire lane, parking directional, security, reserved and tow zone notices. Handicapped Signs include ADA parking and state-specific regulations.
Parking LotIn 2011 there were 57,656 parking lot accidents, resulting in 656 fatalities and 68,000 injuries. Proper signage can announce a safe speed limit and ensure traffic direction and parking spaces are clearly marked.

Have you taken the Americans with Disabilities Act into account?The ADA set forth specific guidelines regarding correct signage for handicap spaces in parking lots, as well as the number, size, shape and orientation of those spaces. Every new parking lot must adhere to these guidelines in full.

The ADA also requires one out of every six accessible spots be van-accessible, or a fraction thereof. So if a parking lot has 400 spaces, then eight must be accessible and two must be van-accessible. There are exceptions for certain medical facilities, which require more handicap parking. In hospital outpatient facilities, 10 percent of patient or visitor spots must be accessible, while 20 percent of those spots must be accessible for rehabilitation facilities.
Additionally, facilities that aren't accessible for the public like those in delivery, law enforcement and trucking, accessibleparking is not required.
