Can you tell me something about the neighbourhood around the British Council? Do you know what a neighbourhood is? It is a particular area of a city or town. This is the British Council neighbourhood of Madinat Qaboos. Are there any schools, restaurants? What about banks? What about a block of flats-Towel group has a block of flats Is there a footbridge close by? Do you know what a footbridge is? It is a bridge designed for pedestrians- there is one close to British Council connecting this side of the road to sarooj. Are there any discos, or a factory, office block, pedestrian crossing, pub, sports centre, supermarket, theatre

Signpost material. I will give each one of you a picture. These are pictures of two neighbourhoods – Wellham and Marlford. Picture A shows Wellham in 1975 and Marlford today. Picture B shows Marlford in 1975 and Wellham today. You must not look at each other’s photocopies.
Talk to your partner about the pictures and find four main changes that have happened in each. Let us do one together.Mohammed you will have picture Aand I have picture B. So can I look at Mohammed’s picture? No. Let me start by describing Malford in 1975- there was police station in the middle. So Mohammed is the police station still there in Malford today? What has replaced thepolice station? A pub.
Next Mohammed can you describe something to me from Wellham in 1975. I will check if its still there in Wellham today.
As we have done 1 already, you have to find 3 main changes that have happened in each neighbourhood.
You have 8 minutes for this activity.
Give out photocopies to pairs. One person has photocopy A; the other has photocopy B.

Make a note of how many people spoke to the reporter and who were they?Play the interview.
So how many people spoke and who were they?Elicit answers from class.
Now listen to the interview again. Make notes on what the people are saying about the changes that have happened.

What do you think about the comments made by the speakers? Are they sensible comments? Discuss with your partner.
In 2 groups discuss changes in Muscat/Oman. Group 1 discuss about the changes that are good. Group 2 here – discuss about the changes that are bad. Also give the reason why you think the changes are good or bad. You have 5 mins to discuss
Listen for interesting comments.
Assign numbers to each student – 1,2, 3….One’s together, two;s together…. Find your partner and discuss what changes you found good and what you found bad.
So group 1 can you tell me a good change and a change that is bad, group 4…
If there is time write a few of the wrong sentences and check with class if it is correct?

Ask Ss how many people spoke to the reporter? Who are they?
Ask Ss what the people say.
Ask Ss for their opinions on the comments made by the speakers. Are they sensible comments?
Put two pairs together in groups of 4. Tell Ss to discuss changes in Muscat/Oman. 5 mins to discuss which changes are good, which are bad and why.
Listen for interesting comments.
Ask one of the better groups to explain ideas.
