The award recognises Pura’soutstanding 50-year public servicecareer and wider services to the

community. Pura began working in Māori Affairs attheageof17.Hehasheldroleswith theDepartmentofMāoriAffairs, IwiTransitionAgency,TePuni KōkiriandtheMāoriLandCourt.RāpakihasincludedabriefsynopsisofPura’sachievementsandIencourageyoutoreadalittlemoreaboutoneofourtirelessadvocates.

IwouldliketothankwhānauwhoattendedregionalandtribalhuionForeshoreandSeabedearlier thismonthandthosewhoplanonattendingtheCrownconsultationatÖnukuonApril21.Itseemsthattheroadtoreformingthislegislationisindeedalongone,particularlyasweare yet to see a proposal from the government thatadequately responds to our key expectations on thisissue. As I have already stated publicly, the currentproposal isawelcomesteppingstonetoaconsensuson the framework to replace the 2004 Act. What isencouraging, is theAttorneyGeneral is taking time to

personally attend the Crown consultations and I amhopeful thatheandhisadvisorswillkeep theirmindsopentothefeedbacktheyreceive.

On other matters, many of you will have read aboutourrecenteffortswithpolicetostoptheillegaltradeinsnowflakepounamufromtheCascadePlateau.

The iwi has expended considerable energy intoclampingdownontheblackmarketandwillcontinuetodo so. I thankall of youwhohave invested somucheffortintothiskaupapa.WehaveevenhadthesupportofTradeMeandInotethequiteremarkablereductionin advertising of snowflake over the internet. Overtheweekendof12–14February2010,TakahangaMaraeandNgātiKurïofKaikōurahostedanationalhuifor aMāori collective known asTähuriWhenua.Thiscollective,alsoknownastheNationalMāoriVegetableGrowersCollective,hasbeeninexistencefornineyearsnow.EachFebruary orMarch theyhold aHui-ä-rohewithinAotearoa,givingtheirmembersanopportunitytocatchupwitheachotherandalsoexperiencethelocalactivitiesandhospitality.Lastyear,itwasattheheartofTuhoe inRuatoki,TauarauMarae; thisyearKaikōura;andnextyearitisplannedtobeatWaitara,thehomeofTeÄtiAwakiTaranaki.Thiscollectivehasageneralinterestingrowingkai,predominantlyvegetables–notjustMāorivegetables–butalsofruitsandotherfoods.Itdoesnothaveaspecificfocusonproductionsystems,suchasbiodynamicsororganics,ratherthememberspromote the indigenous approaches and knowledgetheybring.Oneofitsprimaryobjectivesistoencouragepeople back to the whenua and as such, there is astrongemphasisongettingouryoungpeopleinvolved

in theactivities it promotes.Wewould like todraw inmore young adults and children as members, so wecanmentortheirinterestinMāorikaiastheyfollowtheireducationorcareerpaths.Moreaboutthatlater.

TähuriWhenuaisoneofthosegroupsthathasquietlyestablisheditselfandcreatedanetworkofpeoplewithsimilar interests aroundMāori kai and kai production.Itisacharitabletrustandnowhasover280membersnationally.Thesemembersrangefromlandownersandcropproducerstohomegardeners,students,kaumātuaand kuia, schools, marae, köhanga and some of theland incorporations.Formany, it isavehicle tocometogether to share their knowledge and to spend timewith different generations to contribute to the futureMāorigardenersorlandmanagers.Thecollectivehasakaumātuarōpūdrawnfromngāhauewhā;currentlyamixofkaumātuaandkuiarepresentingNgātiPorou,NgātiKahungunu,BayofPlenty,Northland,Taranaki,Manawatu/HorowhenuaandTeTauIhu.ThecommitteeisalsodrawnfromngāhauewhāandischairedbyNickRoskruge(TeAtiÄwa/NgātiTama)whoalsoworkswithMāoricropsatMasseyUniversitysupportedbyMoanaPuha(NgātiPorou),RichardHunter(NgātiKahungunu/Maniapoto living inBlenheim),SimonLambert (Tuhoeliving in Christchurch), Mataroa Frew (Maniapoto/Otorohanga),ArohanuiLawrence(NgātiKahungunukiHeretaunga)andMakuiniChadwick(NgātiHine/Paihia).Thetworōpū,kaumātuaandcommittee,arethevisibleside of the collective and their combined networksstretch the length and breadth ofAotearoa.They aresupportedbyallthemembersacrossthecountry.

The 2010 hui began on Friday 12 February with amuster in Blenheim hosted by Richard Hunter at theMarlborough Research Centre, which specialises ingrape and wine research. Those who had travelledacrossfromTeIkaaMäuiontheferryorflownin,hadthe opportunity to catch up over lunch and then goona tourof the facilities.Thiswas followedbyavisitto the local community gardens, which Richard is astalwartof,andabriefintroductiontothelocalköhangareoaswell.FromBlenheimtheseparticularmemberstravelleddowntoKaikōuratomeetwithothermembersand manuhiri for the pöwhiri that afternoon. What awonderful welcome, great kōrero to follow with localhistory and stories and marvellous kai. The eveningwas a time for whakawhanaungatanga, introductionsbetweenhostsandmanuhiri,storiesonwherepeoplehadcomefrom,whattheydid,theirmemoriesofearlierhuiandwhathashappenedinbetweentimes.AmongthetravellerswerepeoplefromasfarawayasOamaru,Christchurch,LittleRiver,Nelson,RuatoriaandTikitiki,Ruatoki, Te Puke, Bulls, Hawkes Bay,Wanganui andTaranaki.SomeofthemembershadbeenonahīkoitoPerulastJuly,homeofthekümaraandtaewa,andweheardaboutsomeoftheirexperiences.

Thenextdaywasafulldayofeventstokeepthehuibusyand toshowoff the local regionandactivities. It

beganwithtaichionthemaraeatea,followedbyatalkaboutthemarae,itsgardensandaspirations.Afterthis,thehuihittheroad.Firstwasavisittothesustainablewaste programme in Kaikōura (hosted byAndrew), amarvellousproject thateveryonewas impressedwith.Many even spent a few dollars in the recycled shopthere.ThiswasfollowedbyastopatSouthBay,wheresomemorekōrerowasgivenonlocalhistory,andtheneveryonehadthechancetotakeawalkupthewalkwayordowntotherocks.Thetidewasoutsomanyoptedforawanderontheforeshore.FromheretherōpūtooktheirconvoytoFyffeHouseontheKaikōuraPeninsula,wheretheyweregiventalkabouttheoldwhalingdays,followedbylunchonthelawn.

After lunch there was a tour withMauriceManawatuandhiswhānau,whorunMāoriTours.Thisprovedtobeagreatexperienceandtookupmostoftheafternoon.ThenwewentfromPeketainthesouthtoPuhipuhiBushnorthofKaikōuraandmanystopsin-between,includingafternoonteaatSouthBayagain.Thekōreroandsongswillbe longrememberedandwewereall thankful theweatherwassogoodandencourageeveryone togetoutandparticipateinthesehīkoi.

ThejewelinthecrownforthehuiwasthehākariheldonSaturdayevening.Truetotheirnatureofbeingvegetablegrowers, the vegetables that our hosts provided hadcome from different parts of the motu; kamokamoand taewa, kümara and squash, complemented thekaimoana that was spread in front of us: kina, päuaandbluecod.Whatagreatwaytofinishtheday.Andfollowingtruetikanga,weallgaveitourbestshottoeatasmuchkaiaswecould,butstillsomeremained.Pairawatekai.

IntheeveningtherewasatalkinthewharefromMarkSolomon on Māori development and mära kai, andthen a general discussion from everyone there. Wealso took theopportunity toacknowledge thewhānauinvolved in getting the hui organised and recognisedkuiaDarcia,invitinghertojoinwiththekaumātuarōpūof TähuriWhenua. It was a great opportunity for thecollectivetoconsolidateitsrelationshipwithNgāiTahuandTakahangaspecifically.Whileallthiswasgoingon,oneofthenannieshadadiscreetcornerofthemaraeandwasteachingthemokotheartofweavingflax.Theywerelovingitandkeepingquietatthesametime.

Sundaywastimeforkarakiaandaporoporoakibeforeeveryonestartedheadinghome.Itwassuchashorthuireallybutonepackedwithactivities,kōreroandwaiata.Lots of photos and farewells later, peoplemade theirway home.Manywere on the same ferry onSundayafternoon, and stayed in convoy heading to Picton.SomestayedonforafewdaystoexperienceKaikōuraandTeWaipounamuevenmore.

Thecollectivehastwomainhuieachyear,oneinlatesummertobringeveryonetogetherandtoexperience

eachothers’marae,regionalactivitiesandhorticulture.The secondmain hui is generally around Septembereach year for the ‘business end’ of Tähuri Whenua,theAGM.This is usually somewhere central and thisyearwillbeatParewahawahaMarae inBulls (date inSeptemberyettobefinalised).The2011huiisplannedfor February at Owae Marae in North Taranaki, andwillbeoverfourdaystoallowmoretimeformembersand localpresenters to talk to thehui.Membership tothecollective isopen toanybodywhowants tosharethe interests and objectives of the collective. Someinformation is on the webpage www.tahuriwhenua.org, or you can contact any one of the committee ormemberswhowillbeabletogiveyoumoreinformation.Membership isnot restricted to justMāori, rather it isbased around the interest in Māori horticulture, andweencourageschools,businesses,maraeaswellasindividuals,MāoriandTauiwialike.Duringtheyearmanysmaller hui eventuate andTähuriWhenua participateasmuch as it is possible. In 2010weare supportingan East Coast organic hui over Easter, the harvestandhangitocelebratetheendofthetaewaseasonatPalmerstonNorthinAprilandlatersomeworkshopsonestablishinggardens.

One of the current projects which will interest manypeople is the Spud-in-a-bucket project, which wasinitiated by Tähuri Whenua in 2007. In this project,the collective has been supported by Te Puni Kökirifor development and administration.We are currentlydevelopingacurriculum-focusedresourceforthe2010–11 season and hope to be ready to start distributingmaterials around August this year. The project is asimpleone.Weprovidekura,köhangaandmainstreamschools, who have identified themselves through theexpressionofinterestformonourwebpage,withseedtaewa (Māori potatoes) and an information handout.Thechildrenareencouragedtogrowataewa/potatoinabucket throughout the summer.As school is closedoverChristmasandNewYear,theygenerallytakethebuckethomeforthebreakandtargetaharvestdayinFebruaryorMarch.In2009wehadover4000childrendoingtheprojectandthefeedbackwasoverwhelminglypositive.OneofourmembersatKakanuihascanvassedmostof theschools inNorthOtagoand theyallgrewtaewa this season. CongratulationstotheKiaMauteamwhoparticipatedin the South Island TKD Championship tournamentheld on 20 March 2010 in Öämaru. It was a verysuccessfultournamentforKaikōura,aseverymemberwhoparticipatedgotamedal.BrodieMortonandEmilyMullaly received Gold; Poihipi Clayton, Kya SolomonandKimberleyMorton,Silver.AfterarrivingatMoerakiMaraeat10.30pm,theywereallupagainby5.30amthenextdaygetting ready forcombat, because the eventwas a 40-minute drive toOamaruatWaitakiStadium.Afterprizegiving,photosandawell-earnedicecream,

thetrailerwasloadedupandthevansetoutforhome,arrivingbackat3.30amonSunday.The team is very appreciative of the support andencouragement from its instructors,NgāioTeUa andTahuaSolomon.It would also like to thank the Kaikōura CharitableTrust,parents,MoerakiMaraeandLetitiaMullaly(chiefcameraoperator).ThenationaltournamentisinTaurangainJuneandtheteamislookingforwardtocompeting.

Our tamarikihada fabulousday (thebig kids too) comingupwiththeirownwatergames(pāstylz)includingracesonthegiantblow-upobstaclecourse. Thedaywasfinishedwith a prize giving for the races and random spotprizes,followedbyamean-asBBQcookedbyourtāne.Awesomesighttosee,thetānedoingthecookingwhilethe wāhine played with the tamariki. Ngāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki Taoka Kiekie Hīkoi me Arahura PäSaturday 13 MarchArōpūofwāhinemadethelongjourneytocollectkiekiefortheadornmentoftheirwhare.Memoriesofhowlongittookourtīpunatowalkthetrailstovisitwhānaufloodedback.Karakia,whakawhanaungatanga,acuppa,abrieffromWhaeaRanuiNgarimuandweleftfortheWaimeaReservenotfarfromArahura.

Once in the reserve, and after karakia by Ben, wesplit into twosforsafetybecausetherewereoldmineshaftsandpossumbaits laidaround.Whaeasaid theharvestingistheeasiestpartandwepickedforaround30 minutes.We thanked TāneMahuta for his taoka,travelled back to the newmarae site and to a tunnelhouse,whereourkiekie,kakahoweredrying.

Then back to the grind. Preparation includes cuttingtheendsoff,sizing,andstripping.Ineachleaf,onlythecentrevein isstrippedout,againtheleaf issizedanda specialknot isusedtotiethebundlesoften.Theartinthetradeisnumbers.Furtherprocessesareboiling,drying,anddying.

Aoraki Bound Hīkoi – Anakiwa to Mauka AorakiSunday 14 MarchThishīkoimarkedthetenthcourse,amilestoneforalltheyoungandnot-so-youngpeoplewhohaveparticipated.Thecourse isnot only forNgāiTahu,but for allNewZealanders,thisbeingthekaupapafromthebeginning.And,yes,therehavebeenpeoplefromthefourwinds.

AorakiBound isvery fortunate tohavesponsorswhoprovide scholarships so this course can operate.Thetutors for the courses are fromOutwardBound,NgāiTahuandotherwhānau,andthecoursedurationis20days.

Makaawhio Mauri OraRecently,wecompletedapilotHealthyEating,HealthyActivity (HEHA) programme called Makaawhio MauriOra.Theprogrammeinvolved12memberswhosignedup to participate in activities that would benefit theiroverallhealthandwell-being.

Participants attended a six-week “Appetite for life”seminar that focuses on making better food choices,and then began working with the Green PrescriptionprogrammerunthroughourlocalPHO.Theprogrammefocusesonactivity,monitorsbloodpressure,diabetesandcholesterollevels,alongwithweeklymonitoringof

Te Hokinga Mai On14March,Koukouraratahandedexhibitionhostingresponsibilitiesontoourrūnangainaceremonyheldinthe“TīpunaRoom”(undertheirwatchfuleyes).Sometips and advice, followed by a guided tour inductedus into the roleandcame inhandy for theweek thatfollowed.

Wehadbetweenfourandsixpeopleat theexhibitioneachdayandallfeltprivilegedtobethere.Manysaidthey loved theatmosphereat thegalleryandenjoyedbeingabletosharewhattheyknewwithvisitorstotheexhibition.Eachhadparticularareasand/orpiecesthatleftlastingimpressionsonthem.

ForTerryScott,theexperiencewasamovingone,fromtheopening ceremony through to time spentwith thetaoka. “Onapersonal level, I found it veryhumblingto be able to be involved in sharing our history withothers. As a hapū, we had photos on display in theTīpunaRoomandataokafoundinBarnBay.Ourtokipounamuattractedalotofinterest.Althoughitwasnotdated,itmustbehundredsofyearsold.Theprecisionoftheworkcapturedtheimaginationofallwhostoppedtoviewit.”Wehanded thepae toTaumutu the followingSunday(21March).

The celebration started with a pōwhiri for Minister ofConservationKateWilkinsonandotherdignitaries. Anumberofothereventstookplacethroughouttheday.The new widened and tar-sealed roadway into theglacierwasopenedby theminister and thenblessedby upoko tuaruaReverendRichardWallace. NamedTeAraaWaiau,whichacknowledgesthecorrectnameoftherivercurrentlyknownasWaiho,theroadextendsup to theglacier carparkingareaaspart of abiggerproject that includes cycle ways, walking tracks andnewinterpretationpanels.

Deputy Chairperson Terry Scott gave a well-receivedkōreroaspart of a seriesof speakersgiving lecturesover the weekend and we welcomed back kiwi fromtheirköhangaisland.Atourismforumwasheldintheafternoon.

While living in Wellington he was amemberof three rōpūatonceduring theperiod from1955 to 1958: Ngāti Poneke, Ngāti Riatana and theWellington Māori Club. In 1958 Pura stood with TeWhetūArikioKahukura.WhenworkpromptedashifttotheWhanganuirohein1959hejoinedNgāWaka,thenin1960thePūtikiMāoriClub.AshifttoRotoruasawPurajoinGuideRangi’sconcertparty from 1962 to 1974 along with membership inOhinemutuMāoriClubandNgāraranui.Purawas theWaiariki representative on the “Polynesian FestivalCommittee”andpartoftheteamthatorganisedthefirst

CPIT Supporting Rāpaki Täua and PōuaThe täua and pōua of Rāpaki want to say a hugeTHANKYOU to theChristchurchPolytechnic Instituteof Technology (CPIT) students who have made awonderfulcontributiontotheRāpakicommunityanditsenvironmentinrecenttimes.Thefreeluncheswereasmallpricetopayforthetremendousworktheseyoungpeopledidinourcommunity.In November 2009 Harry Westrupp, of ChristchurchPolytechnic, offered the help of up to 16 studentsenrolled in thegovernment initiative ‘CommunityMax’tothecommunityofRāpaki.AblyleadbysupervisorsNathan and Eric, the CPIT students have assisted anumberoftäuaandpōuawiththeirpropertiesinRāpaki.Tasks included: washing windows, mowing lawns,clearing sections, excavating, cutting down trees andmakingbarkchips, tonamea few. Sadly thisprojectcametoanendinMarch.Thegoodnewsisthatsomeofthestudentsfromthecoursehavealreadygoneontohighereducationandintoemployment.ReihanaParataQSM.

I have to say that Rāpaki tautoko their crews infinefashion.ThereisevenarumourthatsomeoftheRāpakiwhānaumayhavebeeninvolvedinadisplayofourinfamous“howtoflipawaka”demonstrationbutthiswasnotconfirmedattimeofwriting.Rāpakiwouldliketomaintainarōpūoftrainedwakaamacrew,whowillcompeteinvariousregattaandiwiwakaamaevents,which takeplaceduring theyear. Couch ReunionThedescendantsofGeorgeW.A.andKiti(néePaipeta)CouchheldawhānaureunionduringEasterweekendatRāpaki.WewereblessedwiththreebeautifulsunnyRāpakidays,whichfittedexcellentlywiththe‘campingout’themeoftheevent.Wehadanexcellentturnout,with many bringing their tents, caravans and busesto stay around a central huge marqee. There was alovely village atmosphere to the occassion. Many ofourwhānauhadnothadtheopportunitytospendmuchtimeinRāpaki,soitwasgreatforthemtobeabletotaketheirtimegettingtoknowtheplaceandforeveryonetoreaffirm their linkswith theplaceandeachother anddiscussourvisions for theshared future.Weenjoyedheaps of activities and kōrero, with groups spendingtimeclimbingourmaungaTePohooTamatea,updatingwhakapapaandvisitingKiticottageandotherplacesofinterestaroundRāpaki.Someenjoyedweavingwiththehelp ofBuffy’s experienced eye, others had their firstturninawaka,whileothersenjoyedabitofcompetitiononthesportsfield.ItcouldbesaidthatforgettinghowoldyouareseemstobeacommonafflictionwithintheCouchwhānau.Manymemoriesweresharedandmanymoreweremade.Thankstoeveryonethatattendedorhelpedinanyway.Itwasawonderfulweekend,enjoyedbyallandagreatsuccess.Tūkahikāteaiteuru.

Alovingfather,husband,brother,sonandfriend,BevanwaswellknowninTeAoMāoriandTeAoPākehāforhis passion for environmental and Māori issues. Aformer Te Aute College student, Bevan studied atOtagoandLincolnUniversitesbeforeworkingforsuchorganisations as Hillmorton High School, Universityof Canterbury, Crop and Food Research, Te PuniKökiri, ERMANZ, the Royal Commission on GeneticModificationandStJohn’sAmbulance.HewasalsoamemberoftheGreenParty,andstoodfortheGreensin the last election and was an integral part of theirMāori leadership.PriortoleavingChristchurch,Bevanwas theKaiärahi atChristchurchPolytechnic Instituteof Technology who lead theMāori component of tworesearch projects, supporting Māori staff researchdevelopmentandhelpingimplementTePunaWānaka.Healso createdTeTiraHoromaka, aKaupapaMāoriyouth-based adventure therapy program based onTe Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula). getuptherivertothespawninggroundsandasaresultareno longerpresent inanysignificantnumbers.TheWinnememarehopingtobeabletoreturnsomeoftheoriginal genetic stock to their river, and this visit wasoneof thesteps theyhaveto takeon their journey tothisgoal.

TheWinnememhavehistoricallinkswithWaihaoasaresultofavisitherein1875byoneoftheirchiefs.

It was a wonderful couple of days as we shared ourstories and experiences and found that it was likelookingatourownreflections.Theirconnectionwiththesalmonandourswiththetunagaveusmorecommongroundthanjustrelatingtotheindigenousexperience.TheWinnemem story is a sad one of dispossessionandculturalgenocide.Preventedfrompractisingtheir

religion, marginalised and without legal recognition,theystruggle tocontinue theirwayof lifeand tokeeptheirpeopletogether.

Theyhaverecentlybeenrecognisedat thestate levelthrough the efforts of a sympathetic assemblymanand are now focused on the state legislature effortsto have recognition in place at Federal level. Kiekie HïkoiInMarcha rōpūofwāhine travelledover to theWestCoast to gather kiekie.The first nightwas spent at abackpackers in Springfield so we could get an earlystart thenextmorning.Thehighlightof thenightwasoystersfordinner!WeleftearlythenextmorningtomeetRanuiNgarimu,BenHutanaandBuntyMasonatArahura.Afteramihiwhakatau,weheadeduptothebushreservetogatherour first lot of kiekie to complete the tukutuku panelsfor inside the doorway of the wharenui. On Saturdayafternoonwestripped thekiekie into lengthsand tiedthemintobundlestobringhome.Onourreturn,PhyllisSmith and her whānau boiled the bundles and theywere hung to dry in ourweaving room, ready for thenextstageofourproject.WewouldliketothankRanui,Bunty,BenandRokaforgivingustheirtimeandsharingtheir knowledge especially on a very busy weekend.

Cultural mapping hïkoi to Central Otago Thehïkoiwasjustlikethosewänakaweorganisedbackinthe1980sand1990swithinTeTaioAraiteuru,wherewe travelled as hapū representatives and envelopedourselves in thecultural landscapeofour tīpuna.Thewānakaofthosetimesprovidedafocusmanyofushadnotknownbefore,aswefollowedthetrailsandexploredthenaturalresourcesthatweknewwerevaluabletoouroldpeople.TheOtagobuffwekaprojecttobringbackbuffwekaasamahikakai intothiscultural landscapewasanoutcomeofthosehïkoi.This year, two decades on, it was wonderful to seerepresentation from many of our southern kaik fromArowhenua to Ōraka Aparima interacting together inthe cultural mapping hïkoi, with taitamariki, pakekeand kaumātua all contributing their knowledge andexperiences and in doing so, achieving a crossgenerationalexchangeofmatauraka.ThisculturalmappingprojectledbyTakareiNortonfromToitūTeWhenuaandacoreteamofpakeke/kaumātuarepresentatives,pavedthewayformoreofourpeoplebeingabletoexperienceandconsiderwhatitmeanstobeKāiTahu,KātiMämoeandWaitahainoursoutherndistricts.

Aoraki BoundAlong our way we traversed the many tapuwae(footprints)ofourancestors,capturingmomentsofpurebeauty and an inherent appreciation of the rigorouslivesofourpredecessors.TheKāiTahunarrativethataccompanied the physical, emotional and spiritualchallengesenrichedourjourney.Forsomethisjourneywasoneofself-discovery,andothersamerereminderof priorities, but no matter the original intention toparticipate, we all seemed to gain a range of newcolours, flavours, smells and textures that will, if notalready,invigorateourlives.I started out with very little knowledge of what I hadsignedmyselfupforandsurprisinglyfinishedwiththeexactsamefeeling.Persistencetofightthisambiguitydidn’t fazeouradroit instructors,BrettLee,AlfeSmithand Michelle “Mare” Grant.Although it was hard notknowingourfateforthenext20days,itdidn’ttakelong

forustobuildtrustintheprowessofourinstructors.Itwasbecauseof this “asclearasmud”approach, thatourexperienceofAorakiBoundwasoneofexcitement,exhilaration, exhaustion, and animation. The tikanga program with community probationserviceshasbeenanextremelywell-runprogram,andithasachieved itspurposeofencouragingMāoriwhohave been in trouble and getting them back to theirMāoritanga–awesome.

Hokonui Rūnanga provides the lunch and FrancesMaheno travels fromBluff toprovide services to theirfeet,andalsogetsthewaiatagoingwithherguitar!Ahairdresserisalsoavailableeverysixweeks.Last week our kaumātua visited the local HokonuiHeritageMuseumandweregivenaguidedtourbyJimGeddes, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Nextmonth they will be travelling to Bluff to visit Te RauArohaMarae.Thesedaysbring immensepleasure tothose that comealong and they cannotwait until thenext.Thestaffalsoenjoyhostingthesedays,becauseit’sgreattoseeourkaumātuagettingoutandabout.

On the weekend of 27–28 March, at the tail end ofTaumutu Rūnanga’s week of hosting and guiding Te Hokinga Mai – Mō Tātou and Mō Kā Uri exhibitionsattheRobertMcDougallGallery,TeMairikiWilliams,AuntyDoe Parata, and Tania Nutira respectively facilitatedkōhatumauriandrarangaworkshops.

BothworkshopsranontheSaturday,withaworkshopbefore lunch, and one after lunch. All the sessionswere full and participants were able to leave with akete they had woven themselves or with one or twokōhatumaurithattheyhadpainted.OntheSundayTeMairiki facilitated another two full sessions with keenparticipants,whileAuntyDoeandTaniaspentthedayweavingandansweringquestionsaboutharakekeandrarangafrominterestedgalleryvisitors.IntheafternoonTaumutumembersentertainedalarge,captivated audiencewith a programme ofwaiata, poiand haka, before officially handing over the kaitiakidutiestoTeHapūoNgātiWheke.Allinall,everyonewhowastherefromTaumutuagreedthat it was a great week and an absolutely fantasticweekend.Wecan’twaituntilitisourturntoundertakeourkaitiakidutieswithTe Hokinga MaiagainattheendofMay.

First Nations Futures Programme Oct 2009 – Aotearoa Case Study

Jason Harrison and Charisma Rangipunga werethe kaitiaki of the FNFP fellows, directors and guestspeakers,aspartofthefirstcomponentoftheAotearoaCaseStudyfortheprogramme.The Hawaiian FNFP whānau, Hekenukumai Busby,HoturoaKerr,JonOsarioandKaiulaniMurphywereallwelcomed onto Te RauAroha Marae onWednesday17March2010,atawonderfulpōwhiridisplayingbothMāoriandHawaiianprotocols.

DayoneconsistedofwhakawhanaungatangawithTāTipene and Hana Morgan, a tour and kōrero of thehistoryofTeRauArohaMaraeandTahuPōtiki,andadiscussionof tikangaandkawaofmarae.Thefellowsworkedontheircasestudytopic“ClimateChangeandthe impacts for Māori” during their stay in Bluff, withthe focusbeing “ClimateChangeand the impacts forAwarua”,potentialimpactsonthecoastline,thefishingindustry,tioandimpactsontītī.

On day two, the fellows facilitated the IndigenousNavigationHui.Wewere exposed toworld-renownedspeakerswhoareallexperts intheirfields.TāTipenefacilitatedtheproceedingsandgaveanaccountofourmigration, Hekenukumai Busby discussed TeAurere,Hoturoa Kerr covered waka ama, JonOsario gave ahistoric account of Hawaiian Navigation and KaiulaniMurphy talked about Hokulea. Much knowledge wasshared and absorbed throughout the hui. This wasa marvellous day, enjoyed by all who attended andespeciallybytheAwaruawhānau,whohadtheprivilegeofsharingandlearningwithourguestsoverthewholeweek.

OurmanuhiriwereveryprivilegedtobetakenbyboattoRuapukeonday three.Anamazingexperience forall,althoughtheseawasabitroughforsome,butoncethewhānaulandedonRuapuketheywerethrilledtheyhad taken the ride. Our Kapa Haka Wānanga was held on 5–7 April,facilitated by KoroTini and sisterManuariki Tini. Theinterested and willing group of 60 Awarua membersthoroughlyenjoyedtheirlearningexperience.Each day would begin and end with karakia, korikoritinana,stretchesandvocalwarm-ups.The rōpūweretaught waiata-a-ringa, haka, haka pōwhiri, as well asdiscipline, stance, posture, poise, self-confidence andmostimportantly,toenjoythemselveswhileperforming.Taukē!Nextmonth’s section inTePānuiRūnaka forAwaruawillbeagreatone,withaspreadoftheTeRauArohaMaraeKapaHakaWānanga;kōrero,photos,feedbackand future wānanga. We are hoping this will be asuccessforourwhānau,maraeandrūnaka.

The sister on the right, Meronea Hume, is my latehusband,RussellHume’sgrandmother.Shehaddiedbefore he was born and as such, he received onlysecond-handstoriesaboutherandhersister’slives.

Ourbranchofthewhānauhasbeenverysuccessfulinachievements,insportandacademically.

Russell,whodiedin2000,wasaverytalentedrunnerinhisyouth. In fact, in later lifeheofferedhis time tocoachingseniorsprinters,culminatinginbeingselectedastheNewZealandcoachfortheWorldJuniorAthleticChampionshipsinBelgium.

ElderdaughterJeanette(Tobin)wasinvolvedinwatersport, representingNewZealandatseniorandschoolwaterpolo,competedforNorthPihaintheNewZealandsurflifesavingandwasalifeguardfor20yearsholdingnational titles. Auckland-based Jeanette, runs a verysuccessfulmegayachtservicecompanyandhastwodaughters,Grace,aged12andElla,aged8.

Younger daughter Sylvia (Sinclair), now based inEnglandwithherfamily,hastwosons,Thomas,aged12andWill,aged8.SylviahasrepresentedNewZealandalso,swimming in theOlympicsandat theEdinburghCommonwealthGamesandwinningagoldmedalinthe100mbackstroke.ShegainedaBBSattheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,LosAngeles,andworkedasastockbrokerinAuckland,HongKongandLondonbeforeretiringtohavechildren.

The next generation have Grace and Thomas alsocompetinginsport:GraceinwaterpolowhereshehasbeenselectedintheWaitakereATeamfortheupcomingPanPacificGames inJune inAuckland;andThomashas justwon the11-year-oldswimmingchampionshiptitleforthecountyofSummersetinEngland.

Whilemany retold thememories of the old ones, it was an amazing feelingtoliterallywalkthesametrailsasourtūpunafromourKātiMämoe,KātiWairakiandWaitahawhakapapa,andto see thephysical evidenceof their relationshipwiththe hinterland. Our whānau are fortunate enough tostillhave theundisturbedconnection toour traditionalpracticeoftītīharvest,findingpounamuinamountainstreamandsilcreteflakeknivesoninlandsites.Itgavemeadeeperappreciationofwhoweare.Thefeelingofwhakawhanaukatakawithinourrōpūwasamazing. Manuhiri were to travel bymotorlaunchtoarriveintimetotakepossessionofngäkäkärikipriortothepöwhiri.

Atlastminute,theplanwenthaywire.Charliecouldn’ttravel,withacloserelativefallingseriously ill. Itbeingsoclose toChristmas,a last-minutereplacementwasoutofthequestion.Moreconfusion,asenginetroublelaidlowthewakathatwastodotheferrying.KaumātuaJoeBriggsandDOCprogrammemanagerKatrinaKnillprovedtheirmetalthatday.Notonlywasareplacementwakafound–themorespaciousbutslowerVagabond, a comfortable, twin-hulled dolphin watcher – but Joealsosolved theescortproblem.Luckily, thehelicopterhiredforthedaywasbasedinTauranga.Afterseeingusallsafelyonboardourwaka,Joemadeaquickdash,caught the whirly bird and was on hand at RotoruaAirport towelcomengākäkärikiand theirDOCescortandtravelwiththemouttoTühua.

On board The Vagabond it was easy to see whatinfluenceJoehaswithTangaroaandTāwhirimātea.Aglassy seaon the three-hour trip, a silky smoothoneonthewayhome,aboontotheelderlypresent. Thesuperb weather set up Tühua to be picture postcardperfect,withtheentranceintoSouthEastBayleavingoneseekinginvainforsuperlatives.Withnowharf,thekayak-assisted landing proved just the sort of kïnakiadventurethedaydemanded.

Ngāmanuhiriandeightkäkärikireceivedawarmbeachpōwhiriunderthecoolshadeofpöhutukawa.SpeakingforhostsNgāiterangiwasHouataPalmer.AnsweringasNgāiTahurepresentative,anhonourhe’sstillbuzzingabout,wasJoeBriggs.Featuringamongthekohaandgiftexchangesweresomecraysfromdownsouthanda piece of the island’s taoka, the highly prized tühua(obsidian), our host’s gesture of appreciation for ngākäkäriki.Buteverythingtothatpointwasbutapreludetothemainevent.Sincegettingthebirdsreleasedquicklywasthepriority,kaiwasdeferred.Ashortuphilltrudgebroughtus to the chosen release point. Then,with some 40pairsofeyesgluedontheaction,DanMasonandJanetKawe,acarry-boxapiece,begantherelease.Oncue,thefirsttwoflewoffwithnofussintothecanopyabove.

The third, hungry from being caged for some eighthours,nonchalantlyhoppedontotheground,foragingfor a feed. Not fazed by cameras flashing, nor by“Oohs”and“Aahs” fromthewomenpresent, itstayedgrounded,gaininginstantstardomandseveralnames.Likelyitwouldhavestayedgroundedfarlongerhadnotitbeenspookedbythesuddenflightofthefourth.Therest,showingnogreathurrytovacatetheirtemporaryhomes,finallyflewofftotheencouragementofthecallsof those already free, the last two alighting on to thesamebranchtocheckouttheirnewsurroundings.

Throughout, they appeared unfazed by all that hadhappenedthatday,asiftosay“what’sallthefussabout?”and“don’tyouknowwe’reequippedtosurvive?”.

The hākari that followed proved a chance to savoursome kina, crays, and a festive smorgasbord of kaiheraldingChristmasthennotfaraway.Speechmakingcontinued,eventsofthedayrecalled,storiesofTühuaandotherNgāiterangihistoryretold.AcknowledgingthesponsorshipbyBDGSynthesisand the IsaacWildlifeTrust, DOC District Manager John explained whatwent into getting a successful blend of conservationandMāorivalues,forinstance,inthereintroductionofendangeredspeciestositeslikeTühua.

But all good things have to end. So it was with highspiritswepaddledbarefootouttoboardThe Vagabond,while thehelicopter liftedoff taking itspassengers forafastertripbacktoMatakanaIslandandtoTauranga.Behindwas leftngākäkärikiandDOCcaretakerwhowastostaywiththemforthreeweekstomonitortheirsettlingin.Itwasadayverywellspentandonetobelongremembered.

The Rehua Marae Archive Project led by Dr TerryRyanandMarleneKamoaimstoprotectandpreservethe history of Rehua Marae and the Trade TrainingScheme by cataloging and archiving the hundreds ofphotographs, documents and taonga that hold thisprecioushistory.

TheMāoriLanguageCommissionandtheAssociationof Samoan Teachers will join forces to promote bothSamoan LanguageWeek andMāori LanguageWeekthis year. Samoan LanguageWeek starts on 30MayandMāoriLanguageWeekon26July.

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres told theSamoan Teacher’s Association annual conference inWellingtontoday(8April)thathehadreceivedamessagetothiseffectfromMāoriLanguageCommissionActingChiefExecutiveDrWayneNgata.

Dr Ngata said the Commission was “supportive ofSamoan Language Week and of mutual support forPolynesianlanguagesinAotearoaandthePacific”.

MāoriandSamoanarethetwomostcommonlyspokenlanguagesinNewZealandafterEnglish,andMāoriandSamoansareNewZealand’ssecondandfourthlargestethnicgroupsrespectively.

MrdeBreswelcomedDrNgata’ssupport,andtoldtheconference he was hoping for real synergy betweenMāoriLanguageWeekandSamoanLanguageWeek.Mr de Bres hopes theMāori Language Commission,Māorimedia,kōhangareoandkurakaupapawillprovideMāori-Samoan translations in Samoan LanguageWeek,andSamoanmediaandschoolswilldothesameinMāoriLanguageWeek.

Early inApril theTrust receivedword fromtheLotterySignificant Community Projects Fund that its finalapplicationof$600,000fortheprojecthadbeengranted,with the committee noting the significant contributionthattheprojectwouldmakeintheareasofarts,cultureandheritage,tourismandeconomicdevelopment.

Thesuccessofthisfinalapplicationwasmadepossiblethrough the ongoing support of the many local andnational funding bodies that have contributed to theproject over the years. In particular, grants from theNgāiTahuFund(totalling$400,000)andcommitmentsfromtheholdingcompaniesofTeRūnangaoWaihao,

When a Maori health nurse at Christchurch Women’s Hospital offered Lani Carter a free hearing screening for her newborn baby she did not hesitate.“It was an easy decision really, it gives you peace of mind.”Her precious baby girl Analea, now a healthy 8 month-old, passed the test.“But even if she didn’t it would not have been too much of a stress because it would have been identified early before impacting on her speech or learning. That’s why I believe it is so important. Otherwise by the time any hearing problem is discovered they are four years old and that is four years too late.“Mothers should definitely make sure they do not leave that hospital without having the screening done and if they leave early come back to one of the clinics they run. I would recommend it wholeheartedly. This is for our babies. This is about their health.” At the clinic, one of which is situated at Christchurch Women’s Hospital, the mother is encouraged to bring their baby in when they are asleep or well settled. The whole screen takes only 10 -20 minutes and does not disturb the baby. “They put a head set on the baby with what looks like a one-sided ear muff. It clicks and they monitor the baby’s response.”Lani says the hearing screeners are friendly and professional to deal with.“The women are very kind, thoughtful and helpful and it’s not at all an intrusive process. It’s a lovely experience, not frightening at all.”

Lani, the Travel Consultant for Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu says she is more than happy to speak with anyone about it. “Not enough of our babies are getting this screen done, once they have left the hospital it is so much harder to get back for the appointment.”The Canterbury District Health Board aims to make hearing screening for newborn babies available to all parents by the middle of this year. The Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP) started rolling out across the region in May 2009. Its aim is to catch hearing loss early.According to the National Screening Unit, the early detection of hearing loss ideally by three months of age - and being able to intervene early – has been shown to greatly improve long-term language skills and brain function. International evidence shows that babies who begin to receive appropriate intervention such as hearing aid use and developmental support

before the age of six months can maintain language, social and emotional development equivalent with their physical development.“At the moment, the average age kids are picked up with hearing loss in New Zealand is around 45 months – or almost four years of age,” says Angela Deken CDHB Co-ordinator for the UNHSEIP. The UNHSEIP is expected to bring significant improvements in early detection rates.By the end of January 2010, about 2900 babies had been screened within the CDHB’s screening programme. “Two babies have been confirmed as having hearing loss so far,” says Angela. These babies were diagnosed by three months of age had their hearing aids fitted when they were about four months of age.In New Zealand up to 170 babies are born each year with moderate to significant hearing loss.

There are two types of screening methods, both of which are painless: one involves a small soft tipped earpiece being placed in the baby’s ear. This makes a clicking sound and a computer shows how the ear responds. The other screen involves the same soft sounds being played through ear cups and the computer assesses the hearing nerve response.For more information about the screening programme see www.nsu.govt.nzIf you have any concerns about your child’s hearing talk to your doctor or Well Child provider.
