RETIRES
As Editor, I was inspired by our founding editor, Elizabeth Elliott and others who followed her: Marion Samworth, Ruth Storie, Lynn Anson-Cartwright , and Margaret Bush. My first ROM
The islands of Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) are one of the richest biological and cultural areas in North America.
Aboard a new custom-designed 82-foot yacht we will cruise the waters of this remote archipelago seeing ancient Haida villages, an incredible abundance of w i l d l i f e a n d o u t s t a n d i n g wilderness scenery. The trip will primarily explore the eastern and southern shores which lie within the Gwaii Haanas National Park Preserve and Haida Heritage Site.
Ancient Haida villages contain the remains of great long houses and carved poles. The villages are uninhabited but Haida Watchmen will greet visitors. K’uuna is a village that inspired Emily Carr’s totem paintings.
We anchor in secluded bays and travel ashore in large inflatable zodiacs.
Our resource person, Nathalie Macfarlane, is an anthropologist living on Haida Gwaii. She was the curator of the Haida Museum (now part of the Haida Heritage and Cultural Centre).

Our tour explores Japan’s complex history, cultural mysteries and modern life. Brilliant fall colours provide a spectacular setting for our travels.
Bustling Tokyo showcases modern Japan, but it is also home to ancient temples and the tranquil gardens of the Imperial Palace.
We ride Japan’s bullet train to Kanazawa with its beautiful landscaped Kenrokuen Garden and former samurai residential district.
The small towns of the Japanese Alps follow a more traditional lifestyle. A highlight will be the gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Gokayama.
