The century was a period of great literary and social change, and it is useful to consider the literature of the period
In relation to the social and political issues of the time, which include the Industrial Revolution, and the expansion of the British Empire. With the accession of Queen Victoria to the throne in 1837, the literary period until her death in 1901 is also known as the Victorian era.
19th Century
In Europe XIX Century started to the accompaniment of French Revolution echo. This revolution seemed to be the beginning of new era where Freedom, Equality and Fraternity will prevail.
The second half of XIX Century was noted by arising of new conception - critical realism. It was born from Romanticism but then became the opposite of Romanticism tendency.
Some writers did form into literary groups defined by a name and a program or manifesto. In other cases, these expressions were given by critics to certain writers or have been used by modern literary historians to group writers of divergent projects or methods. Nevertheless, these labels can be useful in describing broad historical developments in the arts.

During the 1840s, casual wear became popular. Casual clothing included neckties and scarves. Shirts were commonly made of linen and were black, grey and other neutral colors. Special occasion dress would often include tailored coats specific for the occasion
