Executive Summary
This report presents the findings of the tracer study on the career status of technical-vocational
education (CATVE) graduates of Tabon M. Estrella National High School for the two (2) succeeding
school year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
The main aim of carrying out this study is to track down technical-vocational education training
graduates in order to identify and address mismatches between the present career status of the
respondents (i.e. student, employed, unemployed, or underemployed), relevance of training, and job
satisfaction.
The objectives are to generate comprehensive information on labor market outcomes of technical-
vocational education training graduates and to determine the correspondence between the graduates’
area of specialization in high school to their present jobs or in their area of study should they opted to
pursue college education.
A structured survey questionnaire from the Technical-Vocational Unit (TVU) under the Bureau of
Secondary Education (BSE) of the Department of Education (DepEd) was used for data collection from
the graduates. For SY 2010-2011 graduates, only 187 or 56 % of the 333 graduates were traced while for SY
2011-2012, only 64 or 19 % of the 333 graduates were traced or a total of 251 or 38% of the target
respondents.
The results of the study reveal that seventy five (75%) of the traced graduates opted to pursue
college education relevant to their area of specialization in high school, 13% were employed relevant to
their specialization, while the remaining 12% were out-of-school and unemployed due to family
concerns, limited opportunity offered by the community, and other factors such as not being able to meet
the age requirements for the job.
Based from the results of the survey, Tabon M. Estrella National High commits to improve the
implementation of the Technical-Vocational Education curriculum by continuously finding ways to
improve the workshop facilities, provide more updated books and digitized instructional materials,
provide skills enhancement training opportunities for both teachers and students, maintain the ideal
teacher-student ratio (1:25), and to establish a closer linkage between institution and industry to ensure
that graduates land a gainful employment.

I. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
A technical-vocational education program aims to provide opportunities for the secondary
education graduates to acquire the necessary competencies and qualification to enable them to pursue
college education, post-secondary education, venture into entrepreneurship, or be directly absorbed in
the world of work.
The TechVoc Education Unit (TVU) under the Bureau of Secondary Education (BSE) of the
Department of Education (DepEd) is floating a survey questionnaire to all public technical-vocational
high schools in the country that aims to determine the current situation of the high school graduates with
technical-vocational education training in terms of their employment status, relevance of techvoc training
in their present careers, and job satisfaction. The information generated from the survey will serve as
major inputs in the curriculum development and other educational interventions.
Tabon M. Estrella National High School carried out this tracer study to determine the status of
the schools’ graduates from School Year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 as a way of gauging the relevance of the
school’s curricular offering to the needs of the society. More focus is given to the relevance of their high
school specialization to their respective courses in higher education since 75% of the respondents are in-
school. However, as it is a fact that the economic status of the majority of the school’s clientele falls below
the poverty line, the graduates’ capability of landing a gainful employment after graduation and the
relevance of the trainings provided shall also be considered vital in this survey.
Findings from the study can be used as major inputs to enhance the effectiveness of the school’s
technical-vocational programs and to help achieve its goal in making TMENHS TechVoc education truly
responsive to the needs of our society in these rapidly changing times.
1.2 Objectives
This study primarily aims to determine the career status of Tabon M. Estrella National High
School graduates for School Year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
Specifically, the survey aims to determine the:
1. correspondence of the graduates’ field of specialization in their high school technical-
vocational education(TVE to their present career status;
2. employed graduates’ level of job satisfaction; and
3. rate of graduates who opted to pursue college education.
1.3 Scope
This tracer study covers only the first and second batch graduates of Tabon M. Estrella National
High School under the Strengthened Technical Vocational Education Program -Competency Based

II. METHODOLOGY
The study utilized the descriptive-survey method of research. The instrument used in this study
was a structured questionnaire. Survey research typically employs questionnaires, such as the ones used
in this study, to determine the opinions, attitudes, preferences, and perceptions of persons of interest to
the study (Borg, 1987). The questionnaires also included the following demographic data on subjects who
responded: gender, levels of education and employment. The questionnaires were then sent out to target
respondents previously identified by the proponents. The respondents were then asked to fill in the
questionnaires as honestly as they could.
III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Data gathered in the study is hereby presented, analyzed, and statistically interpreted. Tabular
and graphical presentations of data are also employed.

IV. FINDINGS
Based from survey, 75% of the traced graduates opted to pursue higher education related to the
skills they have specialized during their high school, 13% were employed relevant to their specialization,
while the remaining 12% were out-of-school and unemployed due to family concerns, limited
opportunity offered by the community, and other factors such as not being able to meet the age
requirements for the job.
V. CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
Tabon M. Estrella National High commits to improve its implementation of the Technical-
Vocational Education curriculum by continuously finding ways to improve the workshop facilities,
provide more updated books and digitized instructional materials, provide skills enhancement training
opportunities for both teachers and students, maintain the ideal teacher-student ratio (1:25), and to
establish a closer linkage between institution and industry to ensure that graduates land a gainful
employment. But definitely, TMENHS will not be able to achieve these on its own. Thus, support from
the national & local government must be sought as well as the support of the entire school community.
