Richard Lattin of Lyons, you have won $10 in Rocket Easy Money! Call 257-2368 to claim your $10.00! BY MIKE COURSON Spring weather in Kansas is always a little unpredictable. This year, the trend seems to be nice weather on Wednesday and the weekends, cold rain on sports days. For area track teams, that has meant lim- ited results. Ellinwood has been hit hardest with just a pair of varsity meets. Last week’s meet in St. John was post- poned and the Eagles opted to go to Wichita the follow- ing Tuesday. A bus issue meant no meet that day, and Ellinwood will instead take part in the Wheaton Relays in Lyons this Tuesday. Other area teams have a few meets under their belts. Here are some highlights: Class 5A: New coach Lyles Lashley is making a big splash already with Great Bend. His boys 4x800 team is ranked No. 2 in 5A and No. 7 in Kansas. Kerby Depenbush is ranked No. 7 in the state in the 1600m run. The bad news is Class 5A is loaded and three of the state’s top- five runners are in 5A. On the girls’ side, LaCora Bryant leads the area in the 100m and 200m dashes. She is ranked No. 6 in Kansas in the 100m dash. In the field, Kate Warren’s best discus throw ranks No. 4 in Kansas. Class 4A: Larned’s Josh East has the best 100m time in the area, and Shevin Martin is not far behind at No. 4. East’s time ranks No. 15 in 4A. Thomas Har- mon and Justin Giesbrecht have some of the best distance times in the area. Class 3A: Expectations were high for the Hoising- ton boys. So far, so good. Earlier this week, Jonathan Ball cleared 14-8 to ex- pand on his lead in 3A. He ranks No. 3 in Kansas and is just three inches from the state lead. Christopher Ball ranks No. 3 in 3A at 13-0. Jon Ball also had top-seven 3A times in both hurdle events. Brenner Donovan has moved into the 3A top- 16 in both the 200m and 400m dashes. The Sterling girls are all over the 3A rankings. Taya Wilson leads the class in the 100m hurdles and is ranked No. 3 in the 300s and triple jump. She is also ranked in the pole vault, and is sitting at No. 17 in the javelin. Ashlyn Kelley and Grace Rowland are ranked in the sprints, and Rowland is ranked top-eight in both the long and triple jumps. Lexi Edwards has the No. 5 time in the 100m hurdles. For Lyons, senior Samantha Trejo sits at No. 3 in the 3200m run and No. 8 in the 1600m run. On the boy’s side, senior Oscar Jaime is ranked No. 8 in the 1600m run. In the field, senior Cassie Loesch sits at No. 4 in the discus in 3A and No. 16 in Kansas. She’s ranked No. 5 in 3A in the shot. Cheney’s Kadie Smith, formerly of Sterling, is ranked No. 2 in 3A and No. 6 in Kansas in the javelin. Class 2A: Ellinwood’s lack of meets has hurt the Eagles in the rankings. Se- nior Maddie Hayes remains a contender in the javelin, ranked No. 6 in 2A. Run- ning the 300m hurdles for the first time, she still sits No. 10 in 2A. Senior Joanna Strecker is still No. 8 in 2A in the 1600m run, and No. 10 in the 800. Sarah Hammeke is ranked No. 13 in the 3200m run. Drew Blake had a strong showing at the Pre- State meet for the Eagles. His top 100m dash time puts him at No. 10 in 2A. Lyons senior Cassie Loesch competes in the shot put at a recent meet in Sterling.
