Rangitata Rafts

Rangitata Rafts is the only operator on this unique stretch of river and offers longer time on the river than most other New Zealand one-day rafting trips. Towards the end of your experience we allow time for you to fl oat in the calmer turquoise waters, surf the rafts in the smaller rapids and take an optional ‘leap of faith’ from a jump rock.

Only one hour’s drive from Timaru, we are also the ideal adventure stop when travelling between Christchurch and Queenstown.

Peel Forest Lodge and Horse Treks

Peel Forest is one of the best kept secrets of South Canterbury. The small, sparsely inhabited settlement is an oasis of beauty and tranquillity set amid the dense virgin bush of Peel Forest Park, on the south bank of the Rangitata River. Surrounded by beautiful native forest in the foothills of South Canterbury, Peel Forest Lodge is the ideal place for a real New Zealand escape. Private, secluded and relaxing, the natural timber lodge is spacious and welcoming, offering self-catering accommodation, bed and breakfast on request, or full accommodation with meals.

The main lodge offers two queen-size rooms and one twin, plus two generous living areas and a magnifi cent open stone fi replace. A separate cabin features a double room with bathroom facilities and a kitchenette, while a luxurious outdoor hot tub provides the perfect way to relax. Peel Forest Lodge is the ideal setting to sit back, relax and enjoy the ambience of the surrounding native forest and bird life, and a convenient base for exploring the region and its activities, whether you want a Grade 5 rafting trip or a quiet stroll to enjoy the local fl ora and fauna.

Contact: Pennie & Bert How • Website: www.peelforesthorsetrekking.co.nz • Email: [email protected] • Phone: 0800 022 536

No previous experience necessary - full training is provided as the rapids progressively gain excitement from grades 1 – 5, with the option to walk around any rapids. Minimum age 15 years and reasonable standard of fi tness is required. Lower river options provide a fun introduction to rafting suitable for families and those interested in a more sedate river experience.

We also offer Peel Forest Horse Trekking and Peel Forest Safaris, both activities guaranteed to provide memorable experiences. Your horse trek gives you the opportunity to experience life before the car and enter a relaxed age, trekking through some of the most gorgeous countryside in South Canterbury. We have horses suitable for all age groups and all levels of experience, and our treks are tailor-made for each individual.

Peel Forest Lodge and Horse Trekking are only 90 minutes drive south from Christchurch, and 45 minutes from Timaru, just 7km off the main road. Find the turn-off on the Inland Scenic Route (HW72) en route from Christchurch to Mt Cook and Queenstown.

Rangitata Rafts has all the ingredients to create the perfect recipe for one of New Zealand’s most exciting rafting adventures. Combine spectacular Lord of the Rings scenery with some of New Zealand’s most thrilling stretches of grade 1 – grade 5 white water for two-and-a-half hours, add delicious meals and an amazing atmosphere, and you’ll understand why our rafting adventures are so popular.

Four Peaks High Country Track

Four Peaks High Country Track is a unique walking, tramping, or mountain biking experience, situated on our working high country sheep station 15 kilometres west of Geraldine and 2 hours south of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. This 3 day/ 3 night track is a spectacular opportunity to experience the great outdoor paradise of the South Island high country.

The walking track covers a 40 kilometre round trip over Four Peaks Station following the route taken by pioneering farmers and musterers in the 1850s when sheep were fi rst farmed in the area. The mountain bike trip is about 60 kilometres, following 4-wheel drive tracks. The Track season is from November - April and is limited to 8 walkers or bikers per day. Limiting the number of walkers or mountain bikers to a maximum of 8 per day ensures you experience the peace and tranquillity of the Four Peaks high country environment, and prevents disruption to the stock being farmed there.

Now available is the Pack Run which is a personally guided 4-wheel drive over Four Peaks Station, including a high country picnic for lunch. This is aptly named as the run may include picking up packs along the way and dropping them off at the next hut, en route. Full day excursion ex Timaru or Geraldine.

Te Kiteroa Lodge - Point Bush Estate Vineyard & Winery

Contact: Gary & Ann Dennison • Website: www.pointbush.co.nz • Email: [email protected] • Phone: (03) 689 1088

Historic Te Kiteroa Lodge nestles at the foot of the Hunters Hills in Waimate. Built in 1913 as a sumptuous private residence, the lodge has a fascinating history and is well known for its tranquillity, proximity to native bush and panoramic coastal views. Te Kiteroa provides boutique, luxury accommodation and the lodge produces wine from its own vineyard, operating a cellar door with estate wine distributed under the Point Bush Estates brand.

The unique micro-climate of the location, being frost-free with light loam/clay soil and north-facing slopes, was a strong factor behind the decision to establish the 3-hectare vineyard and olive grove in 2004. Temperate coastal conditions allow the fruit characters of Premium Pinot Noir to fully develop during a protracted ripening season. The local terroir correspondingly suits Pinot Gris and whilst the Sauvignon Blanc production would be one of the most southern vineyards (almost latitude 45° South), it is picked as late as possible to ensure the fruity characters refl ect the long ripening and late autumn sun.

Our winery processes from the vineyard to the bottle or, as we say, from “paddock to palate”. Point Bush Estates produces around 1,000 cases per year, and makes wine under contract for other, smaller vineyards.
