Preface

Foreign trade statistics plays an important role in a nation’s economy as it measures values and quantities of goods that, by mov-ing into or out of a country, add or subtract from a nation’s material stock of goods. Foreign trade statistics are essential for the formulation of monetary, fiscal, commercial and regional integration policies. Moreover, in the Southern African Customs Union

(SACU), reliable import statistics are crucial when it comes to revenue sharing among member states.

Since Namibia’s independence, government policy has been to develop, promote and diversify the country’s exports; to expand and consolidate market shares of existing markets, penetrate new markets and to reduce the over reliance on imports from one or two main trading partners. Prior to independence, trade flow between Namibia and the rest of the world was not independently recorded. Since 1990, positive developments have taken place, both in the particulars recorded and the methods of recording. Computerization of procedures at the Directorate of Customs and Excise in the Ministry of Finance has continued to enhance the timely dissemination and analysis of trade statistics through prompt transfer of captured trade data at Customs to the Namibia Statistics Agency. This bulletin presents the monthly trade data for June 2013.

1. IntroductionThe mandate of the Namibia Statistics Agency is to produce and disseminate relevant, quality and timely sta-tistics, this include statistics relating to imports and exports. This report presents a summary of trade statistics in terms of imports and exports of merchandise goods for the month June 2013.

Foreign trade statistics derived from records of trade flows across international borders are invaluable for the formulation of commercial, fiscal and monetary policies of any country. The basic information for the compi-lation of trade statistics is collected and /or captured based on import/export declarations made by traders.

2. Key Developments

2.1 Trade BalanceNamibia’s total exports amounted to N$4.1 billion, while N$4.3 billion worth of imports was recorded in June 2013, resulting into a trade deficit of N$0.2 billion.

Compared to the previous month when the deficit was N$1.2 billion the trade deficit decreased by 87.0 per-cent. When compared to the same month of the preceding year, the decrease in the deficit was more pro-nounced at 92.0 percent when the deficit was N$2.0 billion.

Expenditure on imports declined by 18.9 percent compared to the previous month. When compared to the same month of the preceding year imports declined by 21.7 percent. Export earnings on the other hand, showed a slight increase of 1.0 percent in June 2013 compared to the previous month, and by 17.6 percent in the corresponding month of the preceding year. Therefore, a decrease in imports contributed to the deficit narrowing in June 2013 compared to the previous month

2.2 Exports to Key marketsNamibia’s top five export destinations during the month of June 2013 were in order of importance: Botswana, South Africa, Switzerland, Angola and the Export Processing Zone. These five destinations accounted for 67.5 percent of Namibia’s exports during the month under review. Export values and shares to each of these mar-kets are listed in table 1.

2.3 Imports from Key marketsThe main countries from which Namibia imported good from during the month of June 2013 were South Africa, Export Processing Zone, Botswana, China and United Arab Emirates. These five countries accounted for 89.0 percent of Namibia’s imports during the month under review. Import values and shares from each of these markets are listed in table 2.

2.4 Top exportsNamibia’s top five exports during the month of June 2013 were Precious stone, fish, ores, slag and ash, vehicles and meat. These five products accounted for 76.4 percent of total earning during the month under review up from 71.2 percent in the previous month and 67.6 percent in the same month of the preceding year.

2.5 Top ImportsNamibia’s top five imports during the month of June 2013 were Vehicles, Precious stones (diamonds), Boilers and Electrical machinery and mechanical appliances. These five products accounted for 47.6 percent of total earning during the month under review up from 44.1 percent in the previous month and 35.6 percent in the same month of the preceding year.

2.6 Exports by mode of transportRoad transport accounted for 36.1 percent of total exports transported in June 2013 up from 35.8 percent one month earlier but down from 37.5 percent recorded in the same month of the preceding year.

Sea transport accounted for 29.7 percent of total exports transported in the period under review down from 35.5 percent in the previous month and 30.2 percent in the corresponding month in 2012.

Air transport accounted for 34.0 percent of total exports conveyed, up from 28.6 percent one month ago and 32.3 in the same month in 2012.

2.7 Imports by mode of transportRoad transport accounted for 77.9 percent of total imports transported in June 2013 up from 67.0 percent one month earlier and 57.2 percent recorded in the corresponding month of the preceding year.

Sea transport accounted for 11.8 percent of total imports transported in the period under review down from 28.5 percent in the previous month and 34.2 in the same month of the preceding year.

Air transport accounted for 9.2 percent of total imports transported, up from 3.9 percent in the previous month and 7.8 percent in the corresponding period of 2012.

3. ConclusionDuring the month of June 2013, Namibia’s total exports amounted to N$4.1 billion, while imports amounted to N$4.3 billion compared to N$3.5 billion of total exports and N$5.5 billion of total imports in June 2012.

Major exported commodities were: Precious stones (diamonds etc.), fish, Ores and vehicles. Major imports were: Vehicles, Precious stones (diamonds etc.), Boilers machinery and Electrical machinery.

A trade deficit of NAD 0.2 billion was recorded in June 2013; a decrease of 86.0 percent compared to the previous month. During the period under review, Namibia’s key export markets were Botswana, South Africa, Switzerland, Angola and EPZ.

Namibia’s imports were mainly sourced from South Africa, EPZ, Botswana, China and United Arab Emirates respectively.

Namibia continues to rely heavily on road and sea as major modes of transport for imports and exports.


4. List of Terms and DefinitionsExport Processing Zone (EPZ): An Export Processing Zone (EPZ) is a Customs area where one is allowed to import machinery, equipment and material for the manufacture of export goods under security, without pay-ment of duty. The imported goods are subject to customs control at importation, through the manufacturing process, to the time of sale/export, or duty payment for home consumption.

Trade Balance: The commercial balance or net exports (sometimes symbolized as NX), is the difference be-tween the monetary value of exports and imports of output in an economy over a certain period.

Trade Deficit: Is an economic measure of a negative trade balance in which a country’s imports exceeds its exports.

Trade Surplus: Is an economic measure of a positive trade balance in which a country’s exports exceeds its imports.
