At-the-Money (ATM) — An optionwhose strike price is nearest thecurrent price of the underlyingdeliverable.

Average Directional Movement Index(ADX) — Indicator developed by J.Welles Wilder to measure markettrend intensity.

Back-Testing — A strategy is tested oroptimized on historical data and thenthe strategy is applied to new data tosee if the results are consistent.

Breakaway Gap — When a tradableexits a trading range by trading atprice levels that leave a price areawhere no trading occurs on a barchart. Typically, these gaps appear atthe completion of important chartformations.

Breakout — The point when the marketprice moves out of the trend channel.

Calendar Spreads — Also known as atime spread or horizontal spread,calendar spreads exploit differencesin time value between options.

Call Option — A contract that gives thebuyer of the option the right but notthe obligation to take delivery of theunderlying security at a specific pricewithin a certain time.

Commitment of Traders — A reportpublished by the CFTC that quantifiesthe sentiment level among various

traders: commercials, noncommercials,and small traders.

Fade — Selling a rising price or buying afalling price. A trader fading an up openingwould be short, for example.

Floor Traders — Employees of brokeragefirms working on exchange trading floors.

Gann Theory — Various analyticaltechniques based on price, time, andpattern to project changes in the directionof the markets. Developed by legendarytrader W.D. Gann.

Greeks — Jargon; a loose term encapsulatinga set of risk variables used by optionstraders.

In-the-Money (ITM) — A call option whosestrike price is lower than the stock orfuture’s price, or a put option whose strikeprice is higher than the underlying stockor future’s price.

Kagi — One of three types of Japanesecandlestick charts that do not have timeon the horizontal axis.

Momentum — A time series representingchange of today’s price from some fixednumber of days back in history.

Moving Average — A mathematicalprocedure to smooth or eliminate thefluctuations in data and to assist indetermining when to buy and sell. Movingaverages emphasize the direction of atrend, confirm trend reversals, and smoothout price and volume fluctuations or

“noise” that can confuseinterpretation of the market; the sumof a value plus a selected number ofprevious values divided by the totalnumber of values.

Moving Average Crossovers — Thepoint where the various movingaverage lines intersect each other orthe price line on a moving averageprice bar chart. Technicians usecrossovers to signal price-based buyand sell opportunities.

Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) — The crossingof two exponentially smoothedmoving averages that are plottedabove and below a zero line. Thecrossover, movement through thezero line, and divergences generatebuy and sell signals.

Near-the-Money — An option with astrike price close to the current priceof the underlying tradable.

Out-of-the-Money (OTM) — A calloption whose exercise (strike) priceis above the current market price ofthe underlying security or futurescontract.

Put Option — A contract to sell aspecified amount of a stock orcommodity at an agreed time at thestated exercise price.
