Traditional Camps versus Acting Camps – KAS ICT

If you're perusing brochures from summer performing arts camps for your developing diva, it is good to keep in mind some significant differences between girls' acting camps and the more traditional bunk house, campfire, and boating type of camp experience.

In fact, while performing arts camps and traditional camps across the country can vary greatly. Some are tucked away in rural areas and offer some traditional summer camp activities along with intensive fine arts types of coursework. Still others boast that their

campus is located right in the thick of the New York City theatre action and more closely resembles a high school or college campus.

In general, summer arts programs include complete performance training:

Acting, both for the camera and for live audiences Music training, good for breath support and voice quality, regardless of whether

the student goes on to musical theatre. Dance, great training for poise and coordination, even if the young actress has no

aspirations to ever dance in public

A summer music camp (like KAS ICT provides) will probably also include acting classes, since musical theatre is a creative amalgam of both skills. The goal is to develop the total performer. A music camp could also serve as a portal to a more broadly-based performing arts experience later on.

Expect this kind of camping experience to be longer than the usual week or so, to accommodate some very specific goals, and to have adequate time to cast, rehearse and polish a real production - even if just for fellow campers.

Instructors are often working professionals who are passionate about the arts and eager to pass on their knowledge and skills to young campers. Imagine how thrilled your child would be to learn how to move across the stage from someone who really has "been there, done that." Summer arts campers vary in age from grade school to college and the activities offered reflect that age range. Younger children generally participate in shorter programs - often they'll perform for their fellow campers and family if the camp is not too far away. For older kids, the productions are more professional, and may be open to the public.

In the process of preparing their shows, all campers will be exposed to a variety of creative activities which should give them a boost in self confidence. Perhaps their special summer will convince them to pursue a career in the arts; perhaps it will simply be chalked up to a great experience. Some of the more intensive programs actually require auditions and feature all-day, five days a week schedules. Prospective stars will be instructed in esoteric skills such as how to relate to the camera, whether it's for a commercial shoot or an audition; and stage combat, which resembles a finely choreographed dance routine.

Even if your child opts for a more traditional camp-like arts experience, enrolment is limited, and there are also age and deportment requirements. Before signing up your

child, it is wise to consider her level of desire and commitment and whether she is able to handle the demanding schedule and expectations of this type of environment.
