What is Ayurveda? By now many people have heard the word “Ayurveda” in connection with healing systems. Ayurveda means “Science of Life”, and this science was traditionally designed to elementally evaluate the mind, body, and spirit.

Vata – Wind – Change Ether and Air

Pitta – Bile – Focus Fire and Water

Kapha – Phlegm – Nourish Water and Earth

The doshas (elements) are the basis of the philosophy of Ayurveda, paralleling Chinese, Tibetan, and many other disciplines. These parallels are a strength when looking for personal support when it comes to Eastern practices.

Each bodily tissue, channel, organ, and emotion has a predominant element that denotes its function. When the elements become imbalanced, a symptom occurs. This allows each individual to understand what a symptom is trying to tell us. We can choose to be aware of the message and make changes, or ignore it and allow the imbalance to continue. Ayurveda is a realistic way to understand and listen to the changes in our bodies and to make choices about the foods, plants, and applications that are most appropriate for rebalancing our self.

It must be remembered that we are made up of all the elements. Balance comes not only when all of our elements are functioning together, but also from an awareness of our mind, body, and spirit. Each one of us has our own balance, which is what makes us individuals. It is our own weaknesses and strengths and our ability to listen to them that makes us unique. This also means that no two people are alike in dis-ease, but only similar in its manifestation.

Thus allergies, headaches, pain, autoimmune problems, and such are handled most appropriately and effectively when the whole body and its symptomatic characteristics are taken into consideration.

The Elements and Doshas Seasonal Health

If it exists, it is made of the elements. Some things consist of a primary element and some things are formed from a full spectrum of elements. The elements do not stand alone in their functions but work as a continual flow like the seasons in nature. It rolls off the tongue naturally to say “Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth” because it was taught to us in school as a foundation for learning about matter, chemical constituents, our environment, and the seasons. The ether element provides the space in which matter can exist. Air is the gaseous state of matter, whereas fire is the energy or power necessary to transform matter from one state to another. Water is the fluid state of matter and earth is the solid state of matter.

In the science of Ayurveda, the elements are the foundation for all things and are called the pancha maha bhutas. In Native American medicine, the four directions of north, east, south, and west represent the importance of the elements through the cycles of the earth and the seasons of winter, spring, summer, and fall. Both traditional medical sciences recognize that our external environment mimics our internal environment. We have space (ether) around us and we also have space (ether) inside us. There is wind around us and we release carbon dioxide and pass gas (off-gas) from inside us. We know fire absorbs and destroys our environment and it also breaks down food for assimilation and absorption in the body. Water is essential to sustain life, and this is also true in our body. The earth is formed by water making the structure of our rivers, lakes, and oceans to then contain it, just as our blood vessels give structure to carry blood throughout the body. When the elements are unbalanced they tell us by providing symptoms of cold, dry, hot or wet. This is how the body communicates with us. This is a natural, continuous, never-ending cycle creating the wheel of life, seasonal transitions, change of climates and evolutionary diversity. Change is inevitable, refers to the cycle of the elements, and is true to the body’s atmosphere as well.

In Nature

Ether (space) allows air (wind) to move→ wind allows fire (action) to be enkindled→ fire allows water (liquid) to boil or lack of fire, water turns to ice→ water allows earth (structure) to transform itself.

In our Body

Ether (space) and Air (wind) allows gases to move through hollow spaces in the body to be exchanged and released.

Ether (space) is cold - creating space for gaseous exchange to break down chemicals

Air (wind) is dry – creating the movement necessary to release excess chemicals not serving us

Page 5: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

Hollow organs for gaseous exchange and release: Small and Large Intestines, Lungs and Heart

Primary Actions: The constant need for chemical process, assimilation and dispersion

Fire (heat) and Water (liquid) allow assimilation and absorption of macronutrients (foods) to convert to micronutrients (liquid vitamins and minerals).

Fire (heat) is hot - creating the fuel of energy to process and assimilate

Water (liquid) is wet- creating the fluidity of the fuel to be absorbed

Organs that assimilate and absorb: Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder and Spleen

Primary Actions: The focused action necessary to break down all things and utilize them

Water (liquid) and Earth (structure) allows nutrients to flow from one place to another through liquid exchange.

Water (liquid) is wet- creating liquid exchange from one place to another for survival

Earth (structure) is cold, dry, hot and wet- creating stability for all elements to interact, play out their functions together and to thrive, rather on the earth or in the body.

Organs of water works system: Kidneys, Bladder, Pericardium, Cardiovascular System

Primary Actions: The nourishment to sustain, follow through and stabilize life

Page 6: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

VATA Ether and Air Vata people find themselves falling into Pitta or Kapha routines, because making decisions is not easy for them. Following their own path is all that is needed and their chances of attaining a spiritual life are far easier than the Fire, Water, and Earth (Pitta and Kapha) doshas because Vata is of the subtle body. Vata collects universal energy, but must learn to live down in their body to use it.

Body: Tall or short, petite, irregular structure or underweight Skin: Dry, rough, prone to aging, discoloration Healthy Mind: Creative ideas, organized, flexible, networker Imbalanced Mind: Restless, scattered, rigid, fragile Emotions: Fear, anxiety, indecision, guilt, hyperactive Organs: Hollow organs- lungs, heart, small intestine, colon Tissues: Bones and nerves Stool: Hard, dry, slow, constipation (#1 symptom) Chakra: Throat (Vishuddha), Third eye (Ajna) Taste: Needs sweet and salty - craves astringent, crunchy, dry Under Stress: Insomnia, paranoid, thinking too much (random thinking), grinding teeth, impressionable/ easily influenced Social Aspects: Creativity, spiritualism - can be seen as an airhead or out of body

Page 7: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

PITTA Fire and Water A Pitta person is blessed by powerful solar energy, which is often seen in their presence. Leadership is the primary quality, which helps transform ideas into

reality. It is Pitta which helps keep Vata and Kapha in check by taking charge of a situation. As intelligent as Pitta may be, their growth on a spiritual plane is long and their true nature unfolds gradually because they are of the mental body.

Body: Toned muscles and medium build; gain weight evenly Skin: Reddish or yellowish, freckles common, prone to rashes, acne Healthy Mind: Intelligent, focus, leadership, confidence, goal oriented Imbalanced Mind: Critical, opinionated, and aggressive Emotions: Trust, judgment, anger, envy, resentment

Organs: Assimilating organs, digestive breakdown of food and nutrients - stomach, gallbladder, liver, spleen, Tissues: Muscles and fat cells/adipose/skin Stool: Yellow, pale, loose, diarrhea, burning Chakra: Solar plexus (Manipuri), Heart (Anahata) Taste: Need bitter, alkaline, cooling - craves sugar, oily, salty Under Stress: Excess exercise, promiscuous, ulcers, insomnia (stuck on a topic/excess focus), diarrhea, headaches, sweating and rashes

Page 8: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

KAPHA Water and Earth They are attuned to the pace of earthly survival. Kapha sustains the basic energy of everything - being the maternal bosom of the planet, where Vata and Pitta types go for replenishment, ensuring stability. A Kapha person tends to be held by the material world (weighing them down on a physical level) yet they are made up of both the physical and astral bodies.

Body: Solid frame, thick skin, padded stature, big-boned, overweight Skin: Smooth, gleaming, pale, dewy, soft, or lacking tone

Healthy Mind: Maternal, calm, stable, nourished Imbalanced Mind: Low self-esteem, overly sensitive, poor me syndrome Organs: All water-works/cardiovascular - kidney, bladder, pericardium, circulation Tissues: Lymph/ plasma and blood Emotions: Depression, melancholy, greed, grief, attachment

Stool: Gaseous, prone to flatulence, dense/heavy mounding, low metabolism/digestive fire, excessive mucus Chakra: Root (Muladhara) and Solar Plexus (Svadhisthana) Taste: Need Light, stimulating and raw foods - craves sweet and salty Under Stress: Overeating/sleeping, eating with guilt, secretive, needy

VataIn the ENVIRONMENT, Ether is empty space and Air is like wind in motion. It lives in hollow places where waste can be collected and removed. In the BODY, Ether and Air are found in hollow organs, where there is empty space for gaseous toxins to collect (Ether) and rhythmic motion to remove waste (Air). When our intestines or lungs are full of toxins, there is less room for gaseous breakdown to occur and dry plaque build-up affects the ability to absorb nutrients.

KaphaIn the ENVIRONMENT, a healthy river has a riverbank (made of Earth) with Water running along it. Together, Water and Earth can make mud, creating dams in the river or a sticky bog. In the BODY, we have lymphatic vessels (like a riverbank) and lymph fluid (Water) moving through it. Mud in the body is known as congestion or sluggishness of the lymphatic system, slowing down our immune response and our body’s ability to metabolize toxins.

Nasal congestion and a runny nose without illness indicates excess mucous and a sluggish

immune response.

Lung congestion can interfere with oxygen exchange and

nourishment of other systems.

PittaIn the ENVIRONMENT, healthy Fire is balanced by the Water element. A forest Fire is destructive unless Water keeps it under control. In the BODY, we use Fire (Agni) for the breakdown of nutrients and those nutrients turn to liquid (Water). When we have excess inflammation in the body it makes mucus (Water) to buffer the fire, otherwise we would not survive the fire spreading in us.

Providing the Opposite for Better Balance The Weather Report

We have two primary ways that our body communicates our weather report to us on an ongoing basis. One is our constitution, which is our genetic bloodline created at the time of conception and by the parents who made us. Our constitution is the innermost nature of an individual, having a unique blend of elements that make up each one of us. It is the inherent intelligence of our body, orchestrating all our known functions, how we respond, shaping what we look like, how our metabolic processes work, even how we naturally think and feel.

The other type of communication is our present state, a culmination of our lifestyle and what has occurred in a lifetime. This can be shaped by trauma, recreational choices, injuries and food habits. Though our present state is affected by our innate constitution, in return our constitution is affected by our choices. The two are intertwined even if separate functions.

We can think of our daily weather report as a culmination of choices we have made in life. Eating alkaline food cools the body down, eating acidic food

heats the body up. This means that it is not about choosing alkaline or acidic for life, but eating according to the needs of our body as we live life. There are times when we need heating foods and times we need cooling foods. It is true that no one needs processed foods since they are not whole in nature, and when we eat them they cause a digestive effect to let us know it was not a wholesome choice.

The weather report is an account of our daily choices and the imbalances that have accumulated from them. Our emotional and physical state will always tell us what is happening in the climate of the body, and the way to change the weather is to provide the opposite. We can change the weather of our body by the choices we make, just like in our environment. The more often we pay attention to what and how our weather is affected, the better choices that can be made to keep the balance.

Page 18: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

Imbalanced Symptoms Provide the opposite of what is being experienced. The mind and body respond to the simplest of changes. These are basic remedies that work like a charm and teach us to make changes when something isn’t feeling right.

Emotional Overview COLD is contractive - creating inward thoughts, making it hard to speak truth or be seen from the heart.

DRY is uncomfortable - creating anxiety and indecision, making it challenging to stay embodied and it is hard to keep thoughts focused or contained.

HOT is frustrating - creating judgment, making it challenging to listen to self and others and it is hard to let go of “things need to get done right”.

WET is congestive - creating heaviness, making it challenging to motivate and it is easier to take care of others.

Physical Overview COLD needs HOT (heating) - Stimulate Circulation - Exercise, take a bath, drink warm liquids or practice breathing.

DRY needs WET (nourishing) - Kidney and Adrenal Hydration - Drink electrolyte water, eat soups and stews, and moisturize your body with oil.

HOT needs COLD (cooling) - Digestive Alkalization - Eat cucumbers, drink mint water, take a nap or just chill out for a while.

WET needs DRY (cleansing) - Blood Cleansing - Eat a salad, make a green drink, break a sweat or dry brush your skin towards heart.

Page 19: Traditional Tools for Nutrition - Hawthorn University

Healthy Habits

• Eat dairy and sugars in raw form • Eat at home more often than eating out • Eat good organic meat and cheese at home, be vegetarian when eating out • If not knowing what to eat - Eat half raw and half cooked • Add spices and ocean salt on everything you eat - to taste • Add 1 Tbsp. of raw Olive oil on top of each plate of food you make • Eat a piece of fruit instead of fruit juice • Add 1 Tbsp. of raw sauerkraut to lunch and dinner • Make your own salad dressing, marinades and sauces • At dinner, make enough food for lunch tomorrow • Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner • Start the day with electrolyte water • Take a thermos of warm miso soup or bone broth with you to work
