Anagran’s Mission

Ensure each and every subscriber has the greatest QOE without affecting other subscribers– QOE is measured by subscribers not ISP’s themselves, so

careful how we approach things. Prevent subscriber churn.Enable maximum IP link utilization for ISP, ending worry about congestion and even embracing it when it occurs– Maximum Utilization = Maximum ROIEnable ISP to differientate subscribers based on their subscription rate plans– Goal is to give enticement for subscribers to upgrade service ,

bringing ISP more revenue and profits

We’re an ISP with 40 usersOk, so there’s no such thing but this is to make it simple to follow. You can multiple this by any number.Out of the 40 subscribers :– 2 are very heavy users representing 5% of subscribers– 5 are medium users representing 12.5% of subscribers– 33 are the largest majority representing 82.5%Lets first look at them as if they are all subscribers to the same rate service @10M– How do we plan for capacity ?– What happens differently than our plan ?Then look at what happens when we consider some users are 10M, some 20M and some 30M subscribers.

Assumptions to Oversubscription Plans•We assume a 20:1 Oversubscription•We assume equal distribution will occur should resources be congested.•Users will minimally receive 500k •Most likely >500K because most users don’t have demand 100% of the time

There’s minor flaws but don’t worry yet. This is assuming all users are trying to use their capacity, but it can easily be modeled into only the active users and we just increase the total bandwith available. – For example, if this was representative of 120 users and

there was actually 60M available, each concurrent active subscriber would receive 2M but the proportion would still be about 3%

– Also oversubscription models are likely higher, but this is going to prove the points ahead even more.

And.. We’re going to show you actual proof of this at the end of the show with a live demo.

Where things go wrong with plan

We can plan for the number of

subscribers and their rate, but we can’t control or plan for what

they are going to do, in this case

how many flows they will open.

Where things go wrong with plan

Based solely on the number of flows a user has, a great inequity

exists between subscribers.2 users are consuming nearly 50%!

Where things go wrong with plan

Logically we target everyone to achieve 100% of their traffic engineered plan, but actually

some get 10x greater and some get 10x less

What happens in real networks ?

During peak usage hours, users are given about as much capacity as they have flows. The users with the most flows get the most capacity.– 10M Plans would receive between 76kbs and 9.5M– 20M Plans would receive between 76kbs and 9.5M– 30M Plans would receive between 76kbs and 9.5M– 20M and 30M Plans would not be differientated from 10M

plans. Why would anyone pay us more money for more capacity if this is the case ?– But don’t worry, there’s a solution coming!

Hard to believe such inequities exist ?

Tier 1 Carrier in Asia, name protected.Conducted study of heavy users in network over 1 year. At end of 1 year : 5% of subscribers used 44.68% of network.10% of subscribers used 58.31% of network. That’s where the previous data models came from.

Service Differentiation with Rate MultiplierPlanned with large Asia based ISP

• The Quality of Experience for each user is clearly differentiated in line with their subscribed plan

• The current offering has tremendous issues.

• No differientation from lowest rate plan to highest rate plan in peak utilization times.

• Hence 80% of subscribers are on very low rate plans because they switched back.

• Peak utilization gives poor service to 90% of the subscribers ,

Abuse Mitigation with Host EqualizationThe flow advantage is removed by managing rates of all flows

• The user with 1 flow has averaged 2.629 Mbps

• The user with 4 flows has averaged 2.603 Mbps

• Each flow of the second user are equalized (641Kbps, 698Kbps, 672Kbps, 678Kbps)

How are Flow Rates Controlled without queueing ?Planned with large Asia based ISP

Instead of random discards in an output queue:Anagran controls each flows rate at the input IFD does not ever discard if the flow stays below the Target RateIFD does not ever discard if there is no congestion (unless configured)If the flow rate exceeds a threshold, one packet is discardedThen the rate is watched until the next cycle and repeatsThis assures the flow averages the Fair Rate (accurate to 90-95% of total link)The flow then has low rate variance (s=.33) and does not stallNo TCP time-outs, restarts, reduces retranmissionsCongestion is actually avoided, not randomly dealt with

Target Rate

Discard 1 packet

17Anagran Confidential and Proprietary

Variations of Target RatesEqualized per Host by BW/Users/Flows – Ie. Everyone is equalSimilar to WFQ using Rate Multiplers per host but there are no queues!– Previous example had 384k, 512k, 1M, 2M and 4M

subscribers• 384k = RM of 38%, 512k = RM of 51%, 1M = RM of 100%, 2M =

RM of 200%, 4M = RM of 400%Modified by Behavior Traffic Control– Examples

• Flows > 60 seconds = 50%• Flows > 10M = 25%

Traditional View on Utilization

High Utilization causes WRED, WFQ to begin randomly dropping traffic Delay increases drastically due to queueing Users will begin complaining at high utilizationTCP timeouts and restarts, UDP realtime applications have glitchesTextbooks say to avoid high utilization

19Anagran Confidential and Proprietary

Example of extreme Congestion on Link (90%+)

Many Flows are oscillating, restarting and causing delays Key Point is the aggreagate effect of shaping may look like a straight line,

but the individual flow results vary vastly )

Browsers and downloads, stall, all users suffer, real-

time traffic unusable

Anagran views on congestionChanging the rules

Target a link utilization rate of 90-95%Don’t react to congestion, avoid it with intelligent flow rate controlDon’t add delay, jitter or randomly drop anythingEnsure each subscriber has maximum QOE and SLANo one notices high utilization, no one cares and no one calls to complain

21Anagran Confidential and Proprietary

Flow Distribution with Anagran (100 Flows)

Same link controlled by Anagran to 90%+No delay or jitter is added even at this high utilization

Key Point is each and every flow is maintained in steady state without delay or TCP restart (notice white line below flows)

When to upgrade if we allow such utilization ?Can Guarantee Experience / SLA per subscriber type

Where is P2P Now?

Peer-to-peer file sharing has declined dramatically in the last two years and has been replaced by YouTube and other streaming video sites.

Sites like Facebook, Microsoft and YouTube account for a disproportionate 30% of all Internet traffic - ReadWriteWeb.

In 2007, P2P accounted for 40 percent of all Internet traffic and down to 18 percent in 2009 – Arbor Internet Observatory Report.

26.6 percent of total traffic is "real-time entertainment traffic" (video, gaming, music), while P2P use dropped from 32% to 20% - Sandvine

Why do customers choose Anagran ?

Traffic and rate control without queuing delay and random packet dropProven maximum utility from network infrastructureAbility to enforce oversubscription models for first timeProven reduction in subscriber complaints of congestion by almost 100%.Easier to implement and manageMaintain SLA to end users without worry “whats next?”Reduced CAPEX and OPEX

When you deploy Anagran you willStop worrying about utilization on your network and concentrate on classes of subscribers SLA’s Stop worrying about what applications your subscribers are running, they don’t want you toStop receiving calls about response times due to congestion, delay and random dropsStop playing a cat and mouse game thinking you can find what’s next or changed before it affects youStop paying for excess capacity you don’t needBe assured each of your subscribers are being treated equally and fairly for the service they pay for relax
