TRAFFIC DATA IN CHANGING TIMESMiovision now looks back on over ten years of traffic data collection. What started out in someone’s basement as an idea for improving the transportation experience has grown into an international company with an incredible wealth of expertise. That same passion for developing solutions to counteract gridlock

still drives us to come up with innovative ideas and prob-lem-solving concepts.I remember how we started out by celebrating eve-ry 1,000 hours of processed video data, then every 10,000 hours and later every 100,000 hours. We only really became aware of what we had achieved when we had pro-cessed over one million hours of video data. The fascinating

thing is that we now process more data on an average day than we did in the whole first year of Miovision. As we see it, that means our solutions make us a professional partner for our customers.

There are still a number of challenges heading our way. The next ten years will see a fundamental change in the definition of urban mobility. All of us at Miovision are already looking forward to wor-king with you to improve the transportation experience for everyone.

Miovision is foundedBy three graduates of the University of Waterloo in Canada: Kurtis McBride, Kevin Madill and Tony Brij-paul. Not long after, in 2006, the team moves to the Waterloo Accelerator Centre.

Product launch of the “Video Collection Unit” The first generation of Video Collection Units (VCUs) is presented to customers in Canada and the United States.

Graduating from the Accelerator Centre Miovision is the first company to graduate from the Accelerator Centre programme. Due to its early suc-cess and constant growth, Miovision soon moves into a new company building in nearby Kitchener, Ontario.

Second generation of the VCU is launchedIn the second generation, the Miovision VCU is light-er than the previous model and offers customers a longer battery life.

Releasing the Scout VCUMiovision launched the Scout VCU at the 2011 Traffex in Birmingham, U.K. In summer, Miovision moves to a larger company building in Kitchener and opens its European headquarters in Cologne, Germany.

1.5 million hours of video data processedIn May 2014, Miovision reaches its millionth hour of video data converted into traffic data. It’s not long before the company has provided 1.5 million hours of traffic data to engineers, planners and traffic au-thorities the world over.

More than 10.000 hours in a dayMiovision has processed more than 10.000 hours of video in one day for the first time in the end of 2016. In total more than 3 million hours have been processed so far.

Miovision was founded in 2005 by three friends who had atten-ded the University of Waterloo in Canada. In 2007, Miovision developed the first generation of the Video Collection Unit (VCU) and its video data processing technology. Even then, both pro-ducts were intended to offer a more precise and cost-effective alternative to the manual traffic counting methods in widespread use. Miovision’s European headquarters in Cologne has repre-sented the company on the European market, as well as in the Middle East and Africa, since 2011.

A PASSION FOR SUCCESSToday, Miovision assists experts from the transportation industry with detailed data that will ultimately be used to optimise traffic. Over 650 customers in more than 50 countries worldwide now rely on Miovision. Traffic counting companies, engineering con-sultancies and public agencies benefit from improved accuracy, increased effectiveness and lower costs for their data collection projects.

FOR OUR CUSTOMERSAt Miovision, our goal is to work with our customers to get urban infrastructures ready for the twenty-first century. We focus on giving customers fast, cost-effective access to accurate traffic data. Our customers’ requirements are our top priority. Only by continuing to develop further and mak-ing targeted use of the latest technologies can we work together to lay the foundation for efficient, functional trans-portation networks in the cities of the future.

IDENTIFYING CAUSESDETERMINING NEEDS

7

The fast-paced times we live in don’t stop for the deve-lopment of a city’s infrastructure. As a city grows, it builds new residential areas and industrial centres. The resulting changes in available homes and workplaces change the movement of commuters, meaning that the traffic situation has to be re-analysed and optimised time and time again.

Use of streets can change considerably within just a few years. New commercial areas appear, causing road users to look for new routes. Changes in industrial areas can result in major shifts in the amount of heavy goods vehicles on the road, or in car traffic at rush hours. Restructuring older parts of the city can also have dramatic effects on driving habits.

Changes in mobility behaviour quickly render traffic signal change intervals that once worked ineffective. If the amounts of traffic coming to an intersection from different directions change, traffic lights with the wrong green and red phases can quickly result in longer waits and backed-up traffic. Dri-vers taking alternate routes may then cause stop-and-go traffic in areas that did not previously have traffic problems.

In many European cities, the existing streets are no longer appropriate for the amount of traffic. Changes in outgoing and incoming traffic mean that traffic routing always has to be readjusted to the current demand and the streets available.

PLANNING TRAFFICThe right traffic count data and the resulting analysis help the responsible parties to initiate the steps necessary for optimising the flow of traffic. Using this data, plans for implementing this optimisation can be developed for the specific targets and requirements at hand.

Analysing mobility behaviour helps us to identify the rea-sons for current and future traffic problems, and use this information to develop effective measures.

REASONS FOR TRAFFIC JAMS

Page 5: TRAFFIC. ANALYSIS....Traffic counting companies, engineering con sultancies and public agencies benefit from improved accuracy, increased effectiveness and lower costs for their data

Accurate traffic data is needed for a variety of reasons. Not only does the changing urban environment lead to chang-es in mobility behaviour, but prevailing attitudes also play a key role in traffic planning. Increasing consciousness of health and environmental factors are grounds for rethink-ing many traffic concepts.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESSIn cities, more and more residents are cycling or walking to work. This is due not only to environmental concerns, but also to higher energy costs and a reduced number of avail-able parking spaces. As a result, designing pedestrian and bicycle-friendly streets is an increasingly important aspect of traffic planning. With Miovision, you can also count the number of pedes-trians and bicyclists. This data is essential to making eco-logically sound decisions.

IMPROVING SAFETYDespite increases in road safety for automotive traffic, the situation is still not satisfactory, particularly for pedestrians and bicyclists. The international “Vision Zero” initiative aims to achieve systematic road safety improvements in this field until no more lives are lost to traffic accidents. With video recordings, customers can not only use the traffic count data obtained and benefit from before-and-after analyses, but also perform observational studies. This way, authorities can determine the popularity of recently built infrastructural components among pedestrians and bicyclists, for example.

Assessing noise levels requires data about amounts of traffic, including division into different categories of vehi-cle. This information is also vital for creating traffic models. Emissions plans can then be developed based on these traffic models.

VEHICLE CATEGORIES

If necessary, specific vehicle types can also be defined and counted for user-defined categories. Vehicle clas-sifications according to FHWA or COBA standards are generally already covered by the Miovision default classes.

CLASSIFICATIONMiovision offers a video evaluation service that uses your videos to create traffic count data. This service offers you access to up to eight standardised categories. If neces-sary, you can also add other user-defined categories.

Classifying vehicles based on video material offers many advantages over other counting methods:- High data accuracy- Fast and cost-effective- No modification to the road required- Additional data on pedestrians and bicyclists - Allows nuanced observation of different road users’ behaviour- Video material can be checked later

YOUR OPTIONSMiovision offers a wide variety of classification packages for different requirements. You can also request custom classifications from Miovision e.g. counting tanker trucks or cars with trailers separately.

TRAFFIC SURVEYS Miovision offers a cost-effective traffic data service that uses your videos to create traffic count data. All study types allow detailed classification of vehicles. In addition to recording bi-cycles on the road, you can also collect detailed data about bicyclists and pedestrians crossing the street.

Junction counts record all types of turn-ing movements at an intersection from any direction of the intersection, as well as changes in the direction of travel.

In roundabout counts, vehicle movements are evaluated from the point at which they enter the roundabout until the point at which they leave it.

Road volume data reports measure the to-tal amount of traffic, divided into direction of travel and lanes on a section of a road. You can count vehicles in multiple lanes, even in the opposite direction.

Recording the movements of pedestrians and bicyclists at a junction or on a road or path.

Scout is a purpose-built system for traffic data collection. The Scout camera allows compact storage during trans-portation, but can be extended up to 6.00 m on site in just a few minutes so you can take videos from a bird’s eye view, ensuring an unimpeded survey of the traffic situa-tion. Thanks to the powerful rechargeable battery, you can use it without a power supply at virtually any location. The durable, weatherproof design means it can be used even in extreme weather conditions.

The camera creates video recordings in an open MP4 for-mat and saves them locally to an SD card. The battery life of 72 hours and programmable recording times enable you to record at intervals over a longer period of time.

SCOUT CONNECTEDADAPTERThe Scout Connected Adapter allows you to remotely monitor your Scout system. Get updates and alerts from the field about battery life, SD card capacity and GPS loca-tion. Also regular camera previews and remote editing ca-pabilities of recording schedules ensure a worry-free data collection.

Scout Connected Adapter also detects the presence of passing connected devices such as mobile phones for travel time and origin-destination studies.

COMPUTER VISIONThe vehicle identification algorithm is trained to cover anal-ysis in a wide variety of locations and scenarios. The auto-adaptive algorithm is also able to process videos made in rain, snow, changing light conditions, at different times of day and in many other ambient conditions. The system uses a special computer vision process to extract vehi-cles and pedestrians from the background. Afterwards, the motion trajectories are evaluated and classifications are made. We continuously enhance and optimise this algorithm.

PRIVACY PROTECTIONNot only the technical solution, but also legal aspects are very important. No personal information is collected in the processes of gathering and managing video data. The Scout only records at a low resolution, so neither faces nor licence plate numbers are identifiable. Only the customer and selected Miovision staff have access to the video data. Upon request by the customer, we can fully delete the data at any time. No third parties have any access to the data.

VIDEO DATA ANALYSISMiovision has already processed more than 2.3 million hours of video data, and receives several thousand hours of new material each day. In order to process all this mate-rial, Miovision has developed a system based on computer vision algorithms with manual quality control. This way, we can achieve fast throughput times while maintaining high quality.

COLLECTING VIDEO DATA

Miovision’s proprietary method allows us to extract traffic data from almost any type of video – no matter whether the video was recorded by the Scout or another video de-vice. The video can show recordings of intersections, road volume, roundabouts or separate pedestrian and bicycle paths. As soon as the recordings have been uploaded to the Miovision portal with additional information, a techni-cian defines all the turning movements that appear in the video and should be counted. We then use the Miovision video analysis software to assess the traffic according to turning movements and vehicle categories.

QUALITY ASSURANCEIn situations where automatic identification and classifica-tion do not provide clear results, a data technician manu-ally counts and classifies the data. In addition, randomly selected sequences are subjected to quality control.Afterwards, we use time series diagrams and statistical processes to validate the data and check its plausibility. As a result, we can guarantee you data accuracy of 95 percent.
