First Organizational Priority: GodGINA LINDQUIST-BAILEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

2015 Metaphysical Theme: “…seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

– Matt. 6:33

As we look back on 2015, the lesson held most dear is Christ Jesus’ instruction to seek God first. This idea was pivotal in our approach this past year, and it fills us with gratitude for…

… 400+ reconnections made with alumni through the 60th Reunion;

… serving Christian Science youth in new ways, like DiscoveryBound’s one-year Compass program;

… reaching beyond to serve 2,057 students through 100 Elk Outdoor Center programming; and

… the 474 donors who helped us reach a $2 million matching challenge grant in our Bridges to the Future Campaign.

It was awe-inspiring to witness God’s love and protection through programs at the A/U Ranches and in DiscoveryBound, whether on the ski slopes, at the top of a mountain, in the waves on a river, or on foreign soil serving others. These experiences proved this statement of Mary Baker Eddy’s in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:

When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.

While challenges arose this past year, in each case it was evident how God prepared the way – made all things possible. Each concern was turned into an opportunity to feel God’s goodness and permanency, resulting in improved processes and better ways of approaching our work.

The strength of spiritual resolve directed by our 2015 metaphysical theme took root in our most fundamental process: setting organizational priorities and goals that benchmark our progress. A renewed focus on measuring success became a desire to spiritualize each idea. The good that resulted from this approach has been immeasurable, and we’re excited to be moving forward, always operating from a basis of spiritual discernment.

Thank you for your investment, partnership and support, so vital to our growth and success. We hope you feel a part of the blessings shared in this 2015 report.

P.S. We invite you to check out our 2016 Organizational Priorities on our website at AdventureUnlimited.org/16orgpriorities. Join us in metaphysically supporting the organization.

Annual Fund

An Open Window We feel no child should be denied a life-changing experience for financial reasons. So to keep the programs affordable, activity fees cover only a portion of the actual cost; the Annual Fund supports almost half the expenses.

Here’s how we accomplished that, with your help, in 2015:

100 ELK OUTDOOR CENTER

Engaging the CommunityA trip to the 100 Elk Outdoor Center at the A/U Ranches changes the lives of many of the 2,000+ annual participants who leave their comfort zone for three days in the mountains. Now in its 17th

year, 100 Elk is the A/U Ranches’ public programming arm, serving organizations from Santa Fe to Boulder. It provides employment opportunities for Christian Science outdoor educators during the spring and fall.

In 2015, 100 Elk began managing the community outreach effort that opens the A/U Ranches’ indoor climbing wall to the public during the off-season. As the only local indoor climbing facility, 100 Elk’s program allows experienced climbers to remain fit throughout the winter, introduces new climbers of all ages to the A/U Ranches and a fresh recreational hobby, and offers opportunities for active family outings.

YOUTH CAMP

Summer of Challenge, JoyWhen Cap and Marianne Andrews opened Sky Valley Ranch in 1955, Cap’s vision was to “work with boys (it all started with boys), to help them appreciate God, and to be willing to turn to Him in prayer.”* In the years since then, tens of thousands of boys and girls have discovered the beauty and joy that come from putting into practice the truth of their unbreakable relationship with God.

Youth Camp ran for three two-week sessions in 2015, providing campers with adventure in the mountains, through the rivers and on horseback. In 2016, they’ll be able to challenge themselves up in the trees on a new ropes course, thanks to generous supporters of Adventure Unlimited’s Bridges to the Future Campaign (see p. 21). The new course allows multiple users to access the course simultaneously and choose different levels

of difficulty, and is used for all of the A/U Ranches’ programs: Youth Camp, Adult & Family Camp, and the 100 Elk Outdoor Center.

ADULT & FAMILY PROGRAMS

Alumni & Friends Reconnect

Last August, alumni of all Adventure Unlimited programs – camp, DiscoveryBound Outreach (formerly the A/U Field program) and DiscoveryBound’s National Leadership Council – celebrated the organization’s 60th Reunion at the A/U Ranches. Alumni in any faith practice were welcomed, and many participants said they most enjoyed renewing long-time friendships and igniting new ones. “I had forgotten how beautiful it [the A/U Ranches] really is,” one participant wrote.

Prior to the reunion, adults enjoyed Mini Camp, a new format for those seeking adventure at the A/U Ranches. Formerly known as Adult Base Camp, Mini Camp offered a variety of activities: riding horses, hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing and relaxing around the campfire, taking time to be Alone with Your Thoughts. This daily free-

choice format was well received, so Mini Camp continues to be an Adult Program offering in 2016.

Family Camp, Christmas Camp, and Bible Study filled up again in 2015; in fact, a second Family Camp has been added for the first time in June 2016 to meet the demand for this popular program (see AURanches.org for details).

A LIFE-CHANGING SUMMERIn just four weeks at camp, a teen and his family find their lives transformed.

Wesina enrolled four of her five children in camp last summer after learning about it from their Sunday School teachers. “I was probably more excited than the children,” Wesina says. “All the amazing activities like horseback riding, white water rafting, mountain climbing and

more – and then to know that my children would gain a deeper understanding of who God was in their lives, side by side with those experiences – it was a dream come true.”

Her oldest son, Joshua, explains how that deeper understanding of God took root. “The spiritual growth I experienced was exponential,” he says. “I learned how to be a better brother, son and person in general. The morals and self-discipline that the staff taught us to apply every day changed the way I thought and acted in my everyday life.”

During an eight-mile run in his first session at camp, Joshua found that applying what he was learning about God brings healing. Here’s his account:

I just knew I would finish last. I started out nervous because I wasn’t prepared to run – I hadn’t worked out for over two months. My counselor came to me as I was out of breath and ready to throw in the towel. He asked me, “Joshua, do wheels on a car get tired? Then why should your legs?” At that moment it all gelled together, I got it, and I could do it, and I did do it! I

remembered the scientific statement of being [S&H, p. 468] and I digested the fact that I am a perfect spiritual being. I made it past the finish line. Even though it got hard, I finished second out of 26 people. I learned that anything is possible by proclaiming and knowing the Truth and never letting go of it.

Before Joshua went to camp, Wesina shares, he’d had some behavioral issues. “His belief in God was always the balancing point,” she says. “After attending [Youth Camp], it seemed as if my son received his blessing. He learned how to apply CS to his daily living.”

“I like how Christian Science was implanted into everything we did,” Joshua says. “It helped add

on to my spiritual growth and understanding of divine Love.”

Through friends he made at camp, he learned about Principia Upper School, where he’s now attending. “His experience was life changing!” Wesina adds. “Being at Principia has set him on course for college, and it all started at the A/U Ranches. My son stopped being short tempered. He found his relationship with the Creator that seemed to balance his personality. I was full of gratitude and joy for these changes.”

As Wesina considered camp for her children, she says she wasn’t sure how her family could cover the fees. “I remember praying and knowing that Love is the provider of all opportunities, and that my children could never be deprived of a life-changing experience,” she says. “In the end, camperships made a world of a difference and changed the dynamic of my family forever.”

WHY WE LOVE CHRISTMAS CAMPBy Kim Johnson

It started years ago, late on Christmas Day. Toys and paper wrappings were everywhere. Our children and their cousins were arguing; they weren’t happy with the gifts, somebody got something better than somebody else, etc. My husband and I looked at each other and said, “We have to do something different next year.”

Lo and behold, God gave us the answer! A few days later we were watching the A/U Ranches Youth Camp video in preparation for our children to go to summer camp, and there was a part about Christmas Camp. That was it! We decided to go.

That next Christmas, we piled our then-three children into our van and drove more than a couple of states to get there. We didn’t have Christmas presents. We didn’t pack expectations of material wealth. We went for the Christ to be felt, to be born in each of us every day – and that’s exactly what we got.

The staff greeted us and helped us unpack. They played with our children in the snow and we settled into the most amazing Christmas of our lives. All the food was provided – I never even had to pick up a plate. (One time I tried, and they

lovingly stopped me, saying, “This is your vacation – just take it easy, relax, sit by the fire.”) I could sit down and not have to cook or chase the children. There were no media interruptions, no phones, no televisions or radios.

We went skiing and sledding, dipped in the hot springs, rode horses in the snow, and helped cut the big tree for the lodge. The new friends we made were priceless. We truly felt the Christ being born in each of us, every day.

When we left a few days later, we agreed that this Christmas marked the best and we were going to come back. And we did, year after year. It has blessed our family beyond measure.

If I could wish one thing for all, it would be that they have at least one Christmas at the A/U Ranches. It will change their view of Christmas and their lives. It did ours.

100 ELK: A PLACE TO WORK AND GROWSvetlana had just spent the summer as a Youth Camp counselor-in-training at the A/U Ranches when a coworker suggested she stay on into the fall and work for the

100 Elk Outdoor Center. “I had just graduated from high school and hadn’t started college yet,” Svetlana says. “It seemed like a good thing to do and that I could grow from it.”

She was right. The confidence she gained that summer grew into a “better sense of responsibility,” she says, supported by the helpful influence of experienced staff members in this environment. “She overcame her inexperience

with her joy and hard work,” observed Jeff Robertson, 100 Elk’s director.

In order to lead the various activities offered to 100 Elk participants, Svetlana was trained in horseback riding, canoeing, lifeguarding, ecology hikes, the ropes course, the rock gym and team-building activities. “In the beginning, I had difficulty explaining the stuff I was teaching the kids,” she recalls. “But really working with it and getting better at it became natural.

“Seeing a kid overcoming a fear or obstacle is wonderful, and you have the other students right there with them, cheering them on,” she continues. “You see the abundance of growth from the day they step off that bus until the morning they leave.”

Serving All Seeking God

Launched 10 years after the A/U Ranches hosted its first campers, the A/U Field program – renamed DiscoveryBound (DB) in 2001 – has been organizing events for Christian Scientists and their friends around the country for decades. The DB Outreach 2015 Annual National Weekend in San Francisco over Memorial Day invited teens and adult participants to focus on spiritual sense. This theme challenged them to seek God first by viewing what they were experiencing in this vibrant city through a spiritual lens.

Seasonal and local activities continue to provide opportunities for teens, adults, families and friends of all faiths to come together with God, which is the foundation of all DB Outreach events. Individuals who attend these activities know they’re based on Christian Science, and many report feeling a sense of love and inclusiveness.

Equipped to Follow GodWith the pilot year of DiscoveryBound’s Compass program now complete, the 13 teens in the group say they feel stronger connections with their moral and spiritual compass, and with each other. “I’m gaining more of an understanding of [Christian Science], and it helps to have other teens in the program who are on the same journey,” one teen says.

The key resource teens take away from the program is a spiritual toolkit for understanding God better. This can

come through new spiritual insights, better awareness of what’s available to Christian Scientists, and in-person exposure to practitioners, to name a few. “I think the assignments and calls have been really relatable and helped me think more spiritually and morally,” another Compass teen says.

Compass includes three retreats and monthly web hangouts, where teens in the group explore topics such as self-image, time management, relationships, how to

Supported ServiceDiscoveryBound’s four-year servant leadership program, the National Leadership Council (NLC), has been bringing teens together in supportive classes, grounded in Christian Science, for 11 years. From their first in-person meeting as 8th graders at the All Class Retreat (ACR) each February to their graduation four years later, high school students in NLC learn, through a rigorous and uplifting curriculum and experiences, a service perspective on life.

Summer activities involve travel experiences that help the teens stretch out of a sense of human comfort into complete trust in God and unselfish giving. But they’re never alone. In 2015, multiple prayer watch groups (typically parents, mentors and church friends) prayerfully supported all summer NLC activities – orientation at the A/U Ranches, two adventure trips, two service trips, and individual internships – with healing results. These engaged adults also experienced an expanded sense of what it is to be part of a community that prays together, in some cases finding a model for their own church work.

Through all they learn during their four years in the National Leadership Council, many NLC graduates want to find ways to continue to serve. Last May, the NLC Alumni Initiative kicked off its first trip working with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home near Buena Vista, CO, and a project in South Dakota is planned for 2016.

FINDING JOYA young man is embraced in a community of love and lifted out of an injury-induced depression.

When Noel attended his first DiscoveryBound Outreach event, he was coming off a rough year. He had been in a skateboard accident the summer before 8th grade that landed him in the hospital for a week. His friends had started drinking and using marijuana, leading to his isolation when he

refused. And at school, his grades collapsed.

Noel made progress in the hospital that was quicker than expected, but he was still facing the effects of head trauma. He needed extra help with his school work and was experiencing depression.

In turning to God and attending Sunday School, Noel found he was yearning for a new, supportive community of friends – those who shared his values and interests. He learned about DiscoveryBound Outreach from his Sunday School teacher and, encouraged by his Sunday School classmates, he started attending local and regional weekend events.

“This helped me focus on someone other than myself,” Noel says. “I remember looking around and seeing all the bright, smiling faces of my peers, and gaining the realization that joy is a mental mindset, born spiritually.”

Lori Selby, the eastern regional manager for DB Outreach, met Noel during his first weekend event at Crystal Lake Camps in the fall of his freshman year. “He was so quiet at first, but by the end of the weekend he was just beaming,” she says.

Noel’s dad, Jeff, who does not practice Christian Science, also noticed the change in his son. “He

returned from that retreat with new and deeper friendships and renewed optimism,” he says. “His CS friends embraced him with enthusiasm and truly cared about his well-being, on many levels. The DB Outreach friendships and experiences renewed his spirit, confidence and willingness to trust.”

This weekend event led to many others in the Northeast, including an overnight New Year’s Eve Owl Howl and a winter weekend in New Hampshire. “These events filled what had been lonely weekend experiences with friendship, healthy thoughts and wholesome activities – so needed

for youth today,” says his mom, Cynthia. “DB Outreach seemed to prepare Noel for new opportunities in leadership, teamwork, academic excellence and greater spiritual understanding. Not only was it fun, it was formative in bringing out natural self-respect, respect for others, confidence and other wonderful qualities that are clearly part of his identity today. It helped to remove the ‘cool’ mask and expose the real Noel – a happy, loving, free,

adventurous and generous young man who is a joy to be around.”

As Noel discovered his true self, he found healing and opportunities, including entering Principia Upper School as a sophomore. Cynthia recalls, “The struggles with his memory and school work fell away, and he discovered a new aptitude for math that put him near the top of the class.” And, to complete the healing, Noel adds, “I was finally released from the depression that I thought had become a part of my identity.”

In the end, he says, it was love that made the difference. “DiscoveryBound certainly showed me great love, healing not only a physical injury, but also shaping my character in a positive way.”

STANDING SOLIDLY IN TRUTHCorrina, a student in the NLC 2018C class, saw how trust in God results in healing when she and her class canoed in Maine during their adventure trip last summer. While loading a canoe onto a trailer, she fell and twisted her ankle. One of her class leaders, AmiLynne, quickly came to help. “She lost no

time in assuring me that I could not be hurt, not in this environment of Love, not ever,” Corrina says.

Initially, Corrina struggled with a sense of helplessness. “I went to bed that night feeling utterly useless,” she recalls. “This was by far the most frustrating part for me. I pride myself on being a fairly independent person, and hardly being able to walk for even an evening turned this on its head.”

In the morning, the plan was to hike up Big Spencer Mountain. Although apprehensive about making the trek on her injured ankle, she found inspiration as she prepared for the journey. “I had been working with the idea that by letting matter sway me, I

was letting in the idea that God could be swayed,” she says. “When looking at it this way, I realized how ridiculous the mortal idea was that there was something wrong with me.”

She started the hike slowly at the back of the group. After a steep ascent, the group reversed its direction on the narrow path and headed down the mountain, this time with Corrina in the lead. For each step, instead of saying, “ouch,” she said, “There is no sensation in matter” (S&H, p. 236).

“By immediately replacing mortal thought with Truth, I was no longer letting these thoughts of helplessness and uselessness even present themselves to me,” Corrina says.

After a while, Corrina “was perfectly able to keep that pace,” she asserts. “My ankle no longer bothered me, and by the next night I could no longer remember which one I had supposedly hurt.”

While she’s grateful that her ankle was healed, Corrina says the most significant growth came from overcoming the sense of helplessness. “I realized that I never depend on myself and only myself,” she explains. “It became entirely clear to me that God is the true source of our ability to do anything.”

HARVEST SONGSDiscoveryBound Compass

PUTTING A STOP TO PAINBy Charlie

Last January, during my Compass group’s retreat at the A/U Ranches, I landed pretty hard on my knee while playing ice hockey. I’m an athlete and play football and lacrosse for my high school team, and this injury felt very different to me. It immediately started hurting a lot.

I realized that I needed to sit out and think about this a bit. The next morning I had sort of a limp, so I decided that I needed to speak with the practitioner at the A/U Ranches. She was really nice and easy to talk to. I told her that I didn’t want this to affect the rest of my time with everyone. She agreed and asked me to hold on to a picture in my head of a sign that said “Stop!” and say “Stop” to the material picture that I could be injured.

I stuck with the truth about how I’m loved and cared for in every single way and that little things like this don’t need to defeat me. I held these thoughts “steadfastly” and remembered what Mary Baker

Eddy said in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 261): “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to the their occupancy of your thoughts.”

Two days later, we went to a place that teaches techniques for doing ski and snowboard tricks by flipping into foam pits. At first, I thought I couldn’t do it, but I held on to the mental image of the stop sign and said “no” to the material belief that my knee could be hurt. Initially, I really had to push myself through it. Then my experience totally “flipped.” I completely forgot about the injury because it wasn’t part of my experience anymore. I had a fantastic time, and when I remembered about the injury, I knew I was healed. I was able to go snowboarding the next day and had a great rest of the trip with my Compass group.

When I returned home, the first thing I told my parents when they picked me up at the airport was about the amazing healing and how grateful I was for this experience.

Alumni: Always Loved and WelcomedLARA SHISLER, NATIONAL ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT

Thanks to all of you who joined us for the 60th Reunion at the A/U Ranches last summer, and to those who were with us in spirit – we felt you there! The National Alumni Board (NAB) had a wonderful time supporting and helping to plan the reunion weekend, and we hope that all of you who attended felt renewed by reconnecting with friends, making new ones and enjoying the Ranches again.

What’s NAB?

The NAB is a volunteer board that works to keep alumni of all Adventure Unlimited programs – including DiscoveryBound Outreach, National Leadership Council and Compass – connected with each other and the organization. Following the 60th Reunion, we’re focused on making connections with camp families and planning mini reunions in conjunction with Adult Mini Camp for specific programs or decades. If you’re interested in helping to plan or would like to attend a mini reunion, please email [email protected].

Alumni are not just a part of Adventure Unlimited’s history, but also the foundation of its future. Regardless of your current faith, we want to stay connected to you. Keep in touch!

HOW YOU CAN STAY INVOLVED

• Metaphysically support the organization.• Participate in programs. Adults can play, too! Join us at Mini Camp,

Family Camp, Bible Study, Christmas Camp and in adult-focused DiscoveryBound Outreach activities.

• Volunteer. Be a DiscoveryBound Outreach chapter worker, chaperone or ambassador. Spend two summer weeks at the A/U Ranches as a bunkhouse parent, or help out at the annual Memorial Day cleanup.

• Tell others about your story with Adventure Unlimited. Talk about it on social media and in your church community. Email it to [email protected] and we’ll get the word out. Sharing your story may be the key to getting a child to camp or enrolled in just the DiscoveryBound program he or she needs.

• Support Adventure Unlimited with your gift. Find the way that best fits your giving style at AdventureUnlimited.org/support-us.

This Happens When You GiveROBERT BLACKWELL, A/U-DB FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

This past year has provided many opportunities to prove the truth of God’s abundant supply. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our 1,722 donors, who gave from their own demonstration of God’s provision.

Supporting day-to-day needs Through many generous supporters of the Annual Fund, we were able to raise $2.3 million to meet our $4.4 million operating budget for the tenth year in a row.

Investing in the next generation As a part of the Bridges to the Future Campaign, together were able to meet a $2 Million Matching Challenge Grant so generously provided by Hank and Wendy Paulson and their children. This has helped us accomplish a number of important priorities in 2015 that provide long-term stability and growth for Adventure Unlimited:

• Reach more than $8.5 million toward the overall Campaign goal of $16.5 million

• Add more than $1 million to the Endowment Fund

• Replace an antiquated website with a state-of-the art online platform

• Build a new ropes course for programs at the A/U Ranches, including the 100 Elk Outdoor Center

• Launch a one-year DiscoveryBound program called Compass

Your impact But what does this list of accomplishments really mean? If you paused to read the stories scattered throughout Trailmarks, you know the powerful effect of such generosity. For instance:

With your support of the A/U Ranches Campership Fund, Joshua’s life is on a new trajectory of spiritual growth (p. 7).

With your support of the DiscoveryBound National Leadership Council, Corrina and her classmates were able to experience the healing nature of God’s ever-present love (p. 16).

With your support of DiscoveryBound Outreach, Noel was able to feel the life-changing support and acceptance of other young Christian Scientists (p. 15).

If you gave last year, thank you! I hope you can see the significance of your gift in these young people’s lives. If you haven’t given in a while or are thinking about giving for the first time, I invite you to become part of this amazing family. There’s nothing like the joy that comes from making a spiritual impact on a child’s future.

With love and gratitude to you all,

“ “There’s nothing like the joy that comes

from making a spiritual impact on a

child’s future.

Young people who participate in A/U Ranches and DiscoveryBound programs are finding healing in their adventures. Your financial and prayerful support are necessary to continue these spiritually based activities.

How can you provide this support? We offer several options:

1. Donate online or send a check payable to: Adventure Unlimited 5201 South Quebec Street Greenwood Village, CO 80111

2. Become an Adventure Partner. Set up a recurring monthly or quarterly gift with a credit card or direct deposit. This allows you to give a substantial gift in comfortable increments.

3. Buy a commemorative brick. Capture a DB or A/U Ranches memory or pay tribute to someone. The brick will be on permanent display at the A/U Ranches.

4. Make a gift of stock or a vehicle. Provide flexibility in your budget and still make an impact with nontraditional giving options.

5. Ask your company to match your gift. Find out if your employer matches donations to a non-profit organization such as Adventure Unlimited.

6. Join the Summit Society. Include Adventure Unlimited in your estate and/or establish a planned gift to help sustain the longevity of the organization while honoring your legacy.
