Section I 5 Overview

Overview

What Is TV Guide On Screen

TV Guide On Screen (TVGOS) is an interactive on-screen television programmingguide integrated into select LG televisions. This system is available to customers with nomonthly charge. The TCGOS software and program listings are provided by Gemstar – TVGuide International, the creators of TV-Guide. While the program listings are provided by TV-Guide, all support on a consumer and service level is handled by LG Customer Service (for LGand Zenith branded products).

NOTE: The TVGOS feature is available in English only.

Features of TVGOS

• Eight Days of program listings for each local broadcast and/or cablechannel* (up to 120)

• No Phone Line Needed• Categorized program listings (movies, sports, children’s, educational,

news, variety, etc)• Program descriptions• One-touch Recording (OTR)• One-touch favorite program scheduling• Video Window (Picture In Guide – PIG)• Automatic clock setup• Flexible channel listings

Delivery of TVGOS Program Listings

Program listings are acquired from the broadcast industry, then assembled andformatted by Gemstar – TV Guide for the TVGOS system. The Guide Data is then distributedto Hosts throughout the United States and Canada to be injected into the Host station’sbroadcast signal to be decoded by the TV.

The TVGOS data is encoded into the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI) of the analogNTSC broadcast signal of the local Host station (typically ABC or PBS). The Host does notmaintain the TVGOS data rather, they simply lease rack space to Gemstar. For this reason, the Host should not be contacted in regards to the TVGOS system. Unlike other data servicescarried in the VBI, such as Closed Captioning and XDS, the TVGOS data is transmitted inidentical packets, four (4) times a day. While the times for TVGOS transmission are notconstant throughout the country, nor published, they are typically in the early am, late morning, early evening, and late pm. Since the TV must be able to tune to a Host channel to download

Overview 6 Section I

TVGOS data, the set must not be in use order to receive TVGOS downloads. The timing of theTVGOS data transmissions ensures that the data is available during periods when the TV istypically not being used.

TVGOS System Compatibility

The TVGOS system is compatible with Over-The-Air (OTA) TV reception, as well as,most Cable TV service providers. However, TVGOS is not compatible with Digital SatelliteSystems (DSS) such as DirecTV or Dish Network. While the TVGOS supported website,http://www.vgi.com, lists several DirecTV and Dish Network satellite receivers that arecompatible with the TVGOS system, it should be noted that this compatibility only applies toDVD Recorders that use the TVGOS system and not TVs. Once again, the TVGOS system forLG – Zenith TVs is not compatible for downloads via DirecTV or Dish Network.

* Not all available CATV channels will be included in the TVGOS listings. The TVGOS systemcan only support 120 channels. In cases where there are more available channels than theTVGOS capability, some channels will not be available for program listings. Gemstar – TVGuide provides listings for the most popular channels based on viewership. Channels withlower viewership will not be included at the risk of removing channels with higher viewerships.Gemstar – TV Guide will reevaluate channels and at times will remove and add channels to thelist of available channels for any given market.

Setup

Connections

Antenna

If the only incoming TV signals are from an antenna, simply connect the antenna to theANT IN input on the TV. In this case, it is critical that users are able to receive a clear NTSCsignal from local ABC broadcasters (for most areas), or an alternate Host channel.

For non-DVR [Digital Video Recorder] TV models, also connect the optional G-LinkWand [IR Blaster] to the G-LINK port on the TV. (Some models may have a TVGOS Demo Pinthat must be removed from the G-LINK connector.) Place the other end of the G-Link Wand infront of the IR Receiver of a Video Cassette Recorder [VCR]. The IR Receiver of a VCR istypically located on either the right or left side of the front display panel.

Basic Cable TV (CATV)

If the incoming TV signals are from a local cable TV service, simply connect the coax-cable from the wall to the CABLE input on the TV. An antenna may also be connected to theANT IN input on the TV for local Over-The-Air [OTA] HDTV signals. In this case, it is critical thatusers do not delete the Host channel from their cable channel list (usually analog ABC).

Cable TV Service with a Cable Box

If the incoming TV signals are from a local cable TV service and require a decoder(Cable Box), connect the coax cable from the wall to the CABLE input on the Cable Box. Next, either a) connect the Ch3/4 output of the Cable Box to the CABLE input on the TV, or b)connect the Video Output (Composite Video) of the Cable Box to the VIDEO 1 input on the TV.

NOTE: Even though the TV may have multiple Video Inputs, VIDEO 1 is the only input that iscapable of receiving the necessary TVGOS data. Therefore, if users wish to use a Cable Boxto provide HDTV signals on a higher rated input type (Component, DVI, HDMI, etc), then acable splitter may be used and follow the instructions for Basic Cable. This will preserve theTVGOS functionality for most channels and allow other programming to be viewed on asecondary input.

Connect the optional G-Link Wand [IR Blaster] to the G-LINK port on the TV. (Somemodels may have a TVGOS Demo Pin that must be removed from the G-LINK connector.)Place the other end of the G-Link Wand in front of the IR Receiver of the Cable Box. The IRReceiver of a Cable Box is typically located on either the right or left side of the front displaypanel.

NOTE: When using a Cable Box, the FLASHBACK button on the Remote Control will notoperate. The FlashBack (or previous) function of the TV is disabled whenever the internal tunerof the TV is not used.

An antenna may also be connected to the ANT IN input on the TV for local Over-The-Air[OTA] HDTV signals.

Cable TV Service with a CableCARD™

If the incoming TV signals are from a local cable TV service and require aCableCARD™, simply connect the coax-cable from the wall to the CABLE input on the TV.Insert the CableCARD™, supplied by the cable service provider, into the CableCARD™ sloton the TV. An antenna may also be connected to the ANT IN input on the TV for local Over-The-Air [OTA] HDTV signals. . In this case, it is critical that users do not delete the Host channelfrom their cable channel list (usually analog ABC).

What Happens Next

Once the TVGOS configurations are set, the TVGOS system awaits the TV to be turnedoff (Stand-by Mode). (Some models only require that the analog tuner becomes availablethrough an action such as the TV switched to an auxiliary input, instead of powering off.) At thispoint, the TVGOS system assumes control of the analog tuner and begins scanning forchannels carrying the host stations signal. During this process, the TVGOS system readsavailable station ID information from each channel and assigns Ids to various channels in theTV’s channel list. Once the TVGOS data is found within a Host station’s signal, that channel isstored as the Host.

As the TVGOS data is being received and processed, the TVGOS system attempts tofind the ZIP or postal code entered during the setup process. If a match is found, the TVGOSsystem begins gathering channel lineup information associated with the zip code. If antennawas selected as the only signal source during the setup process, then the antenna basedchannel lineup is loaded into the TVGOS system memory and program listing collectionbegins.

If cable was selected as a signal source during the setup process, then possiblechannel lineups from the TVGOS data are compared with the station ID information previouslystored. If the stored station IDs match a possible channel lineup, then the matching lineup isstored into the TVGOS system memory and program listing collection begins. However, if amatch is not found, or two or more lineups match the stored station IDs, then a “ChoosingYour Channel Lineup” dialog is prepared and displayed the next time that the GUIDE buttonis pressed. When this dialog is displayed, users may select the lineup that matches thechannel lineup provided by the servicing Cable TV Company. If no lineups match, then “NoMatch” should be selected, and the channel lineup can be manually specified by using theChannel Editor (see page 22). Program listing collection will not begin until after a lineup hasbeen selected or assigned.

TIP: In some cases, a matching ZIP or postal code may not be found. If the TV is located in anewly reassigned ZIP or postal code, enter the previous ZIP code for the area. If the previousZIP code is not know, such as a user moving to the new ZIP code area, then enter an adjacentZIP code or a ZIP code for an area slightly closer to the nearest metropolitan area.

NOTE: Channel lineups for small, independent Cable TV Providers, such as those that onlyservice particular neighborhoods or communities, may not be included in the TVGOS data.Due to the limited amount of bandwidth allowed for TVGOS data, all lineup are not possible. Inthis case, the lineup will have to be manually specified.

NOTE: Because there is no way for the TVGOS system to determine the power status of aCable Box, the TVGOS system does not include a function for powering on a Cable Box.When a Cable Box is connected, it must remain powered on at all times in order to receiveTVGOS data. Also note that, when the initial scan of channels is performed by the TVGOSsystem to determine a Host channel, the Cable Box will cycle through channels. During thisscan, the Cable Box must not be disturbed by a user.

Downloading Program Listings

The TVGOS system can display 8 days of program listings for up to 120 channels. Dueto the limited bandwidth available on the Host’s signal, the complete 8 days of program listingsmay not always be available in a single download. Large metropolitan areas that containmultiple CATV Service Providers, a large number of available TV Channels, and a largenumber of ZIP codes, will consumer a large amount of the available bandwidth before theprogram listings are even included. For these reasons, the program listings are not transmittedin the TVGOS data in perfect chronological order.

The first program listings to be included in the TVGOS data are for Day 1 (today),followed by Day 2 (tomorrow). The next program listings to be included are Day 8, not Day 3.Days 3 and 4 are next, followed by Day 7. Finally, Days 5 and 6 are included. [1, 2, 8, 3, 4, 7, 5,6] While the entire 8 days of program listings may not be included in the TVGOS datatransmission, Days 1, 2, and 8 are always included. This non-chronological method providestwo important functions. First, with Days 1 and 2 always being transmitted, any programchanges to a broadcaster’s schedule are updated. (For example, if a sporting event’s post-season series ends early, the originally scheduled games will be substituted with alternateprogramming.) Secondly, the complete 8-day program listings will always be stored in theTVGOS system memory. (The last day, Day 8, is always included in the download.)

NOTE: If the amount of data required for a particular area is too large to allow all eight days ofprogram listings to be included in the transmission, then during the initially days of use, somegaps will be seen in the program listings. (For example, program listing for Monday andTuesday could be seen but, Wednesday and Thursday missing while, Friday is seen.) In thiscase, it will take up to 6 days to establish a full 8-day program guide. However, onceestablished, the full eight days will always be loaded.

TIP: If the GUIDE button is pressed before program listings have been loaded, “No Listings”will be displayed instead of actual program listings. If network logos are displayed, then thechannel lineup has been established. This is an indication that the TVGOS system is ready tobegin downloading program listing at the next TVGOS data transmission.

Change System Settings

If any changes are needed to the TVGOS setup, the “Change system settings” optionunder the SETUP tab of the Service Bar, may be used to repeat the Setup Process or changeChannel lineups. Actions that would require a change to the system settings include; the usermoving to another zip code, a change in or addition of cable TV service providers, addition orremoval of a Cable Box, addition or removal of a VCR (non-DVR models), or incorrect channellineup.

Change Channel Display

The channels that have program listings provided for in the listing grid can be altered,as can the order in which they are displayed. Channels can be added to or removed from thelisting grid or rearranged by using the “Change channel display” option under the SETUP tabof the Service Bar.

To Change Channel Display Options:1. Enter the “Change channel display” option2. Use the / buttons to highlight the channel to change and pressENTER.3. To include or remove from the program listings, select either “on”or “off” in the “channel” option.1, 2

Page 23: TRAINING MANUAL TV GUIDE ON SCREEN - …diagramas.diagramasde.com/televisores/TVGOS Manual... · TV Guide On Screen 3 Table of Contents Using This Manual 4 Trademarks 4 Section I

Section III 23 Advanced Operation

NOTE 1: While there may be hundreds of channels that are available for program listings, only120 may be active. Removing a channel from the listing grid does not remove the channel fromthe TV’s Channel Map. Therefore, the channel will still be active and tuned to when scanning orsurfing through channels outside of the Guide mode.

NOTE 2: In cases where there are both NTSC (analog) and ATSC (digital) for broadcaststations, it is tempting to remove the NTSC “version” from the listing grid and leave only theATSC “version”. This action can have undesired effects, since the TVGOS could “lose” theHost channel. Sine the TVGOS data is only transmitted in the NTSC signal, the Host channel isan analog broadcast. We suggest that if a user wishes to remove the NTSC “version” of apossible Host channel, they instead move the channel to the bottom of the listing grid. This willresult in the analog listing not normally seen but, the TVGOS data transmission will not beinterrupted.

NOTE 3: When the TV is connected to Basic Cable TV (without a Cable Box or CableCARD),the QAM Tuner of the TV may receive some un-scrambled digital cable channels. Thesechannels will not be listed by their virtual channel number assignment (for example, 512) but, will be on their actual cable channel (such as 118-4). However, if a program listing for thechannel is available in the TVGOS system, the channel will initially be assigned to the virtualchannel number (channel number that would be displayed with a Cable Box or with aCableCARD). In order to include these channels in the listings grid, the actual channel numberwill need to be reassigned to the listing.

Recording Conflicts

Recording conflicts will occur when two or more programs arescheduled to be recorded at the same time. Once a program hasbeen scheduled for a recording and a second program is set, a“RECORDING CONFLICT!” dialog will be displayed. By default, thenewest scheduled recording will override the older setting.

A recording conflict will also occur when a program is scheduledfor recording in the same time slot that another program is set for areminder. However, the conflict will only be triggered it both events areset to occur at the same time. For example, if the reminder is set tobegin 1 minute early, and the recording is scheduled for one minuteearly, then the error is triggered. If the reminder is set to begin 1minute early, and the recording is scheduled for on time, then theTVGOS system will tune to the channel for the reminder, then after oneminute tune to the channel for the recording.

Advanced Operation 24 Section III

Reminder Conflicts

Reminder conflicts operate in the same fashion as recordingconflicts, and by default, the newer reminder will override the oldersetting. However, reminder conflicts are handled in two differentmethods.

1. If reminders are set for the TVGOS system to automaticallychange the TV channel to the reminded program, then a “REMINDERCONFLICT!” dialog will appear when the second reminder is set.2. If the reminders are not set for auto-tuning, then a selection dialogis displayed when the time for the reminders is reached.

Section III 25 DVR Operation

DVR Operation

DVR operations apply to models with built-in Digital Video Recorders, such as the60PY2DR, 50PY2DR, and 50PX4DR, as well as future models. These DVR models have theadded ability to record television programming without the need for an external recordingdevice. Signals from the RF Inputs (Antenna or Cable), Composite Video or IEEE-1394 inputscan be stored onto the internal Hard Disc Drive (HDD) and viewed at a later time.

The DVR abilities can operate in multiple operations:• TimeShifting• One-Touch Recording• Scheduled Recording• Playback

TIP: Any other DVR functions not associated with the TVGOS system are covered in theOwner’s Manual of the TV.

Before any discussion of DVR operations can begin, a few key points must beestablished.

1. DVR mode is only available for the RF Inputs, Composite Video Inputs, and IEEE-1394 Inputs (if equipped). Component Video, HDMI/DVI, etc.(HDTV Inputs), are novalid inputs for DVR functions.

2. Copy-Protected programming cannot be recorded.3. The maximum number of recorded programs is 500.14. Recordings must be longer than 10 seconds.5. Variable Bit-Rate Compression is used to store programs onto the HDD; therefore

available recording times are only an approximation.6. The TVGOS system is not capable of VCR operation in DVR model TVS.

NOTE 1: A large number of recorded programs will create a longer time to initialize the HDDwhenever the TV it turned on. This must be considered when setting the Start Time for ascheduled recording. An extended early Start Time may need to be established in order toprovide the TV’s operating system an opportunity to initialize the HDD before programrecording can begin. Also, archiving recorded programs to a D-VHS VCR, or deleting them, will provide more efficient system operation.

TimeShifting

The TimeShifting abilities are not directly associated with the TVGOS system but meritsdiscussion. The DVR model TVs have the ability to constantly record whatever channel isbeing currently viewed. Users then have the ability to pause and rewind the program they arewatching. The TimeShift feature can store about 1 continuous hour of programming onto theHDD (actual time may vary depending upon model and compression) consuming up to 10GBof space. This buffered programming leads directly into the One-Touch Recording feature.

Page 26: TRAINING MANUAL TV GUIDE ON SCREEN - …diagramas.diagramasde.com/televisores/TVGOS Manual... · TV Guide On Screen 3 Table of Contents Using This Manual 4 Trademarks 4 Section I

DVR Operation 26 Section III

One-Touch Recording (OTR)

One-touch Recording (OTR) requires only a simple press of the RECORD button on theRemote Control to begin recording. While viewing normal TV programming (not in TVGOSmode), press the RECORD button on the Remote Control to access OTR. At this point, the TVwill automatically begin recording the channel (or input) being viewed, while displaying anoption window. Pressing the / buttons will cycle through recording duration options. Therecording duration can be changed in 30 minute increments, up to 3 hours. Another option forduration is “Program”. This setting will use the data provided by the TVGOS system toautomatically determine the ending time of the current program and stop recording at this time.

TIP: The OTR function begins recording at the moment the RECORD button is pressed. However, if the TV program has already begun, the entire program can still be recorded(provided the TimeShift feature is active). Simply use the button on the Remote Control torewind to the beginning of the program. Once at the beginning of the program, or other pointyou wish to start the recording from, press the RECORD button and set the duration to“Program”. These actions will transfer the previous portions of the program stored in theTimeShift buffer to the beginning of the recorded program.

Scheduled Recording

Actual Scheduled Recording function has already been discussed (see page 19). On aDVR model TV, the TVGOS system sends a command signal to initialize the DVR portion ofthe TV to begin recording, instead of VCR commands via the G-Link Wand.

NOTE: Program Information data for the recorded program will automatically be listed as theTitle of the recording. Please note that, if a recording begins before a previous TV programhas ended, the preceding program information will be displayed as the recording title. Therecording title may be edited by following the instructions in the Owner’s Manual of the TV.

TIP: While displaying the program listings in the TVGOS system, a simple press of theRECORD button will automatically set a recording for the highlighted program listing.Subsequent presses of the RECORD button will cycle through the record frequency optionsavailable in the set recording function.

Presses of the RECORD button on a highlighted program listing:1. Record Once2. Record Regularly3. Record Weekly4. Remove Record Setting

Use the / / / buttons to navigate within the Folder List ( ) and the Recorded TVList ( ) to locate a desired program. Once a program is highlighted, the Thumbnail Window( ) of the selected program will provide a preview of the recorded program. Upon pressingthe ENTER button a popup menu will appear providing options for the selected program. Theactions available for a recorded program include:

• Play – Begins playback of the selected/marked recording.• Mark All – Marks all of the recorded programs to be included by an

action.• Unmark All – Changes all recorded programs to the unmarked status.• Move – Moves the selected/marked recording to another folder.• Delete – Deletes the selected/marked recording.• DVHS Out – Archives the selected/marked program to a connected D-

VHS VCR.• Rename – Edits the selected program’s title.• Cancel – Closes the popup menu.

During playback of a recorded program, all typical playback functions normallyassociated with VHS or DVD playback, such as Pause, FastForward, and Rewind, areavailable. Please note that Frame Advancement (Frame by Frame playback while in Pausemode) will have a slightly different effect on a DVR TV than normally experienced on a DVDPlayer. While users are accustomed to advancing one frame at a time on a constant bit-rateDVD movie, DVR TV’s use a variable bit-rate compression method. Therefore, once playbackis paused, the system must read the next 15 frames in order to determine the bit-rate beingused. As a result, if the frame of video that is displayed when the PAUSE button is pressed isconsidered Frame 1, the second press of the PAUSE button will advance to Frame 2, then thethird press of the PAUSE button will display Frame 17. Each subsequent press of the PAUSEbutton will display consecutive frames after the initial 15 frame skip.

Section IV 29 Diagnostics

Diagnostics

If program listings have not been received after the initial setup process, there are twodiagnostic avenues to take. If the TVGOS system does not display program listings but, doesdisplay the Channel List, then all settings are correct and the system has simply not received afull download yet. If the TVGOS system does not display program listings or a channel list after24 hours, then there may have been incorrect system settings selected during the setupprocess.

System Settings1. Confirm the input source is correct. If the TVGOS system is “told” there is an

antenna connected, then the TVGOS system will attempt to access a local OTAHost channel, even if not antenna is actually connected.

2. Confirm the ZIP/postal code is correct. (If the Zip Code is new, input an adjacentor previous Zip code.)

3. Confirm the Cable Box (if used) selection and IR codes are correct. Also note, that when using a Cable Box, the Cable Box must remain powered ON in orderto TVGOS downloads to take place.

The other main possibility for missing program listings, other than system settings, isincoming signal problems. Confirm a good, strong reception of all local NTSC networkbroadcasters, especially ABC, is possible. If the incoming signal is weak, the datatransmission for TVGOS may be compromised. The simplest test is to tune the TV to the localABC station (NTSC, not ATSC digital). Confirm that a strong audio and video signal is present(No snow in the picture or static in the audio). Once a strong video signal is established, pressthe CC button on the Remote Control to display Closed Captions. Since the Closed Captionsare transmitted in the same VBI portion of the signal as the TVGOS data, the Closed Captionsperformance is a good indicator of adequate signal strength for TVGOS transmissionsuccess. If the Closed Captions are not correct, such as containing “gibberish”, then theincoming signal is not strong enough for TVGOS data transmission. Adjust the incoming signal(antenna placement, Cable TV cable ends, etc) until all of the above criteria have been met.

Also note, as mentioned previously in this manual, the local Host channel must not beremoved from the TV’s Channel List. When a customer is capable of receiving both ATSC andNTSC broadcasts of local networks they are often tempted to delete the NTSC channel. Thischannel, however, is necessary for TVGOS downloads.

The TVGOS System has a diagnostics screen that is accessible via the RemoteControl.

1. Press the GUIDE button to enter the TVGOS system.2. Use the / / / buttons to highlight “SETUP” in the Service Bar.3. Use the button to highlight “Change system settings”.4. Enter 753159852.

Page 30: TRAINING MANUAL TV GUIDE ON SCREEN - …diagramas.diagramasde.com/televisores/TVGOS Manual... · TV Guide On Screen 3 Table of Contents Using This Manual 4 Trademarks 4 Section I

Diagnostics 30 Section IV

Two screens in this diagnostic mode are of value on this level. The first screendisplayed is the “System Info” screen. This screen will display such information as; softwareversions, data string identification, and settings. While this screen has no adjustments orcontrols, it provides details that are helpful when passed on in an error report.

Original version of TVGOS Current operating version of TVGOS Upcoming TVGOS update version Data string identification Input the TVGOS is set to look for the Host station and data Connected VCR manufacturer and IR code being used (DVR models will

display “recordable host”)

The second screen of importance is the “Section Reception – Slicing” screen. Use the/ buttons to scroll through the available options until “Section Reception – Slicing” is

displayed. The data of importance on this screen is the series of numbers for “TypeB” and“TypeC”. These data figures represent TVGOS data collection from Host Channels.

If there is no data for either “TypeB” or “TypeC”, and at least 24 hours have passedsince the initial setup process, then the TVGOS system is not receiving and data. Thisindicates either a problem in the incoming signal, TVGOS settings, or the internal TVGOScircuitry of the TV.

If there is data for either “TypeB” or “TypeC”, then TVGOS data has been received. Ifthere have never been program listings displayed, the incoming signal strength may be too lowto sustain complete data acquisition. If there have been previous program listings displayedand missing listings is a new occurrence there has either been a change in the incomingsignal or, there may be problems at the Host Channel.

However, to insure that allcomplete data is captured, a 24-hour waiting period is recommended.

I completed the initial set-up for my TV Guide On Screen hours ago, but when I try toturn it on, a screen message tells me to input the correct set-up information. What’swrong?

There are four possibilities:1. Initial set-up was done incorrectly. (i.e.: The user entered wrong country, ZIP/postal code or Cable Box information.)2. The TVGOS data was temporarily unavailable in your area (Wait another 24hours or Re-do set-up).3. The Cable Box was turned OFF. The TV must be OFF and the Cable Boxpowered ON.4. The VCR was turned OFF. If the connection includes a Cable Box to VCR,Stereo/AV cable connection from VCR to the TV, the VCR must be tuned to the outputchannel and powered ON.

I had a power outage. Do I need to go through initial setup of the TV Guide On Screensystem again?

No. The information you entered is in a protected part of the TVGOS system memory.

Note: For Cable Box users and TVs without a secondary tuner for PIP, the TV must beOFF and the Cable Box must be left ON for the TVGOS system to receive channel line-up information.

If I make a mistake during setup, how do I go back to the previous step? There are two ways to do this:1. Press the GUIDE button on the Remote Control twice, then follow the on-screenprompts to re-enter your information.2. Complete the remaining setup steps. When “Step 4: Confirming Your Settings”appears, select “No, repeat setup process.” Follow the on-screen prompts and input thecorrect information.

What if the channel number is not visible on my cable box?Your cable box may be defaulting to a clock or time display once the channel changes.Watch the box carefully when testing the cable box brand code to see if the channelchanges to 09.

Why aren’t all my channels initially displayed? There are two possibilities:During initial setup and search the TVGOS system scans for video on each channel. Ifthe video is detected and the channel is included in the lineup information the channelshould be displayed. If not:1. There was no discernable video on the channel during the initial search. Turn thechannel ON in the “CHANNEL EDITOR”.2. The channel is not included in the TVGOS listings data. Local and Public accesschannels are examples of the type of stations that may not be listed in the TV Guide onScreen system.

Why do all my channels display “No Listing?”There are two possibilities:1. There has been a loss of power either from a power failure or an unplugged TV.2. The TVGOS system has not yet received its first listings transmission (leave TVOFF over-night).In either case, the phrase “No Listings” will be replaced with program information duringthe next host download cycle. Downloads will occur within the next 24 hour period.

Page 34: TRAINING MANUAL TV GUIDE ON SCREEN - …diagramas.diagramasde.com/televisores/TVGOS Manual... · TV Guide On Screen 3 Table of Contents Using This Manual 4 Trademarks 4 Section I

FAQ 34 Appendix

Why do some of my channels display “No Listing?”There are eight possibilities:1. The channels in question were recently turned ON (in the Channel Editor screen)and TVGOS system has yet to receive its first listings transmission.2. After completing the initial set-up, the first listings transmission of the day wasinterrupted by powering the TV ON.3. After completing the initial set-up, the first listings transmission of the day wasinterrupted by a scheduled recording. (This only applies to Cable Box set-up.)4. The TV was left powered ON for an extended period of time and TVGOS sytemwas unable to receive program listings during normal host transmission cycles.5. During the first listings transmission, the primary host station was down or off linefor part or all of the day.6. Poor reception on the host station caused some of the data to be missed.7. The Cable Box was turned OFF. Remember: The TV must be OFF and theCable Box must remain ON.8. The VCR was turned OFF. If the connection includes a Cable Box to VCR,stereo/AV cable connection from VCR to TV then the VCR must be powered ON.

How long are host transmissions?TVGOS data is transmitted at varying times, usually four times per day, and the cycleslast approximately three (3) hours. The TVGOS system only requires one transmissiona day to maintain up-to-date program listings. Because the TV must be powered off inorder to receive new information, multiple transmissions are conveniently scheduledduring morning and early afternoon hours.

How often do host transmissions take place?Updated program information usually can be received by the TV Guide On Screensystem four times a day. Set-up information is transmitted 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek.

How do I add, delete or change the assigned number of channels on the TVGOSsystem?

Use the “CHANNEL EDITOR” to make adjustments.

If a channel is displayed on my TVGOS listings, does that mean I should be able towatch it?

Not necessarily, because the TVGOS system only displays listings for the local channelline-up. If the user has cable, the channels received are determined by their cablecompany.

Why doesn’t my favorite channel have more information in the Information Box orExpanded Information Box?

The hardware that makes TVGOS possible is a computer chip which has limitedstorage space. Factors used in determining which programs display detailed programinformation are number of channels turned ON and availability of descriptions.

Page 35: TRAINING MANUAL TV GUIDE ON SCREEN - …diagramas.diagramasde.com/televisores/TVGOS Manual... · TV Guide On Screen 3 Table of Contents Using This Manual 4 Trademarks 4 Section I

Appendix 35 FAQ
