Every year, about 150,000 people* die in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to live. Health and safety and first aid in your workplace are more than just legal requirements.

They can be the difference between life and death.

St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading provider of:

• first aid training

• health and safety training

• first aid and health and safety supplies.

It’s vital that, whenever needed, first aid is delivered with the confidence gained from effective training, and using appropriate, quality first aid supplies. Practical health and safety training to identify hazards and reduce risks is every bit as important.

St John Ambulance provides the training and equipment you and your employees need to be the difference.

* Using death registration data from the Office of National Statistics, 2008 (England and Wales).

Supporting our work in your community

By choosing St John Ambulance to train and equip your employees, you are also supporting the nation’s leading first aid charity. We teach people first aid through advice and training and we campaign to educate people about the importance of first aid. Because even basic first aid can save a life.

Many of those we teach become St John Ambulance volunteers, working tirelessly to ensure that first aid skills are available whenever and wherever needed.

How our income is spent:

• Just £2.10 pays for each child in a class of 30 to receive a free first aid guide

• £25 enables us to provide a carer with free first aid training

• £270 covers the cost of a qualified trainer teaching a complete first aid course to 30 school students

• £2,251 fully equips a St John Ambulance Community First Responder to attend emergency calls and provide care until the emergency services arrive

• £55,198 pays for a new ambulance.

No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. We are St John Ambulance. We are the difference. The difference between a life lost. And a life saved.

5You can be the difference – visit sja.org.uk To speak with a Customer Service Adviser about training at our premises or at yours, call 0844 770 4800

Research by St John Ambulance found that:

• almost a third of businesses experience a specific recurring accident in their workplace

• four out of five employers acknowledge that there are times when a first aider isn’t available

• nearly two thirds of people would like first aid training at work.

The cost of not putting appropriate measures in place can be enormous. Providing your employees with the skills to prevent accidents and save lives can be the difference to your business, your employees and the wider community.

We can deliver Everything you need from one trusted supplier

As well as the best training for your employees, we can provide you with all the first aid and health and safety supplies you need for your workplace. Introduction

Workplaces in England are bound by health and safety legislation (see page 21). You’re required to have appropriate measures in place and ensure you have a sufficient number of employees trained to deal with situations when they occur. You also need to have the appropriate supplies and equipment.

Why your first aiders should train with St John Ambulance Teaching experience

St John Ambulance is the UK’s leading first aid organisation and has been teaching and delivering life saving first aid for decades.

We teach first aid to more people from more businesses and organisations than any other provider, with over a quarter of a million local and national businesses as customers.

Teaching expertise

As co-authors of the award winning First Aid Manual, the UK’s only fully authorised guide, we set the standard for first aid training. Our professional trainers are qualified to the highest standards to make sure that your first aiders leave the course knowing exactly what to do – and have the confidence to do it – whenever emergency or non-emergency first aid is required.

Helping you meet your legal requirements

Our core first aid training is approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to meet legal first aid at work regulations. All our training courses are designed to help you meet industry regulatory requirements.

Free Associate Membership insurance

St John Ambulance provides all students who successfully pass one of our approved first aid courses with Good Samaritan insurance cover for the duration of and the validity of their training qualification. Visit sja.org.uk/insurance for full details.

Learning that goes beyond the initial training

It’s our business to make sure your first aiders have the skills and confidence to react effectively whenever called upon. Keeping first aid skills refreshed with regular practice is essential. Free Annual refresher training, which is strongly recommended by the HSE, is available in the first year after gaining the First aid at work qualification, and is half price for the Emergency first aid at work qualification.

Training that can really be the difference

Effective first aiders need as much hands on training as possible. With no more than 12 people for each trainer, your first aiders will get the focused attention they need. And with one resuscitation manikin for each pair of students, your first aiders will get more essential practice with St John Ambulance than with any other first aid training provider.

We’re proud that our training does so much more than help you to tick a legal box. By training with St John Ambulance, your first aiders really can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

† Calls cost a maximum of 5p per minute from a BT landline. Calls from other networks may vary and calls from mobiles may cost more.

What first aid training do you need?

Employers are responsible for making sure that all employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.

Two St John Ambulance qualifications are approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for the provision of first aid in the workplace:

• First aid at work: a comprehensive three-day course

• Emergency first aid at work: a one-day course.

Every workplace is different so it’s vital to ensure that the training your first aiders receive is appropriate to your needs.

Use the table below as a quick guide to assess what training courses may be appropriate. Alternatively, visit sja.org.uk/yourguide for more detailed help.

* The statutory minimum requirement is at least one Appointed Person but since 2009, the HSE does not classify Appointed Persons as first aiders and they should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained. To properly safeguard your employees, you should have at least one first aider, with a HSE-approved qualification available at all times. Without this provision, your employees are at risk.

Health and safety legislation

Health and safety in your workplace

Health and safety legislation

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 requires you to provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure, as far as is practical, the health and safety of all employees while at work.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 identify situations when health and safety training is important, such as:

• for new employees

• when there are new risks in the workplace

• when risks have increased or changed

• where skills may need updating or have become rusty.

The Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977 and the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996 require that you consult employees or their representatives on health and safety issues.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, businesses must carry out a fire risk assessment and have sufficient fire marshals available at all times.

You may need to know about other health and safety requirements that cover specific types of work activities.

If you require any guidance or advice, you can speak with a Customer Service Adviser on 0844 770 4800.

Health and safety can seem complicated, but it needn’t be. St John Ambulance’s range of health and safety training is designed specifically to help you:

• understand your health and safety requirements and meet your legal obligations

• ensure the safety of employees and visitors.

Key health and safety considerations

Who is responsible for health and safety?

You must ensure someone competent is responsible for performing health and safety duties. This could be you, one or more employees, someone from outside your business or a combination of these.

Do you have a written policy?

All businesses with five or more employees must have a written health and safety policy which clearly describes:

• how health and safety is managed

• who is responsible for different aspects of health and safety

• how duties should be performed.

St John Ambulance training can help you produce a written policy that can be the difference, for instance ways to consult with your staff so they understand its relevance to them and engage with it.

Have you carried out a risk assessment?

A risk assessment helps you to identify all workplace hazards so you can put in place measures to eliminate or reduce these risks. St John Ambulance training covers what sort of hazards should be considered and how to carry out an effective risk assessment. It also looks at how often risk assessments should be carried out.

Have employees received the appropriate information and training?

For the safety of all employees and visitors to your business, you must provide clear instructions and information, along with appropriate training. See page 22 for guidance on what type of training your employees may need.

Do you have the appropriate health and safety supplies and equipment in place?

You must ensure that your workplace is equipped with appropriate health and safety and first aid supplies. St John Ambulance provides a range of materials, from warning notices to fire extinguishers. Turn to page 31 for more information.

Essential first aid supplies for your workplace

First aid kits and consumables All workplaces are required by law to be equipped with a suitable number of appropriately stocked first aid kits. The British Healthcare Trade Association (BHTA) has determined the appropriate first aid kits and their contents for workplaces. You should ensure your workplace has the appropriate British Standards Institute (BSI) kit(s).

To see our full range of first aid kits, visit sja.org.uk/firstaidkits and for the consumable items you need to keep your kit in date and fully stocked, visit sja.org.uk/firstaidconsumables

Please note that there may be occasions where having two kits may be better than one, especially in high risk areas. This will ensure you’re likely to carry the items you need in case of an emergency. If you have several Significant areas, using several smaller kits instead of fewer larger ones may be more practical.

Step 1:

Degree of hazard

Step 2:

How many significant areas does your workplace have?

Step 3:

How many employees per significant area?

Step 4:

Recommended minimum first aid requirements*

Step 5:

Previous injury and illness records

Step 6:

Specific risk factors

Low hazard

(eg. offices, shops, libraries)

A significant area is an individual floor or building, but we strongly recommend that a first aider can get a kit and reach the casualty within 60 seconds of an initial call for assistance. For example, if you have an office and a warehouse on the same site, this will be a minimum of two significant areas:

1) The office = low hazard

2) The warehouse = higher hazard

Each area needs to be assessed on its own risks.

<25 At least one small kit The new St John Ambulance workplace kits represent the minimum recommended cover for your workplace; do you have specific needs to fulfil your organisation’s risk assessment?

If you have a large significant area, would two kits work better than a single larger one, especially in a higher risk environment?

• Disabledemployees

• Loneorremoteworkers

• Membersofthepubliconsite*

• Multiplefloorsorbuildings

<5 At least one small kit

5–25 At least one medium kit

>25 At least one large kit per 25 employees

* Footfall of members of the public falls under the HSE’s recommendation to offer a duty of care to people at your premises. An assessment of those likely to be on site (children/elderly/disabled)isnecessarytoensureyouarebestabletocopeinthecaseofanaccident.

A defibrillator in your workplace could be the difference between a life lost and a life saved…

10:05:54 Your colleague complains of feeling unwell and short of breath.

10:16:21 Suddenly, he collapses on the floor.

10:16:29 You run over, call his name and gently turn him over.

10:17:37 Your trained first aider arrives and asks you to call an ambulance while she starts CPR.

10:18:42 The emergency services operator asks whether there is a defibrillator in your workplace as the ambulance is more than four minutes away. There isn’t.

10:22:52 Despite your first aider performing CPR for more than five minutes, without defibrillation your colleague’s chance of survival has plummeted by the time the paramedics arrive.

For every minute that passes without defibrillation, chances of survival from cardiac arrest decrease by 14 per cent.

Research shows that applying a controlled shock within five minutes of collapse provides the best possible chances of survival.

British Heart Foundation

Using an automated external defibrillator (AED) is really simple:

• Automatically diagnoses and treats cardiac arrhythmias so you don’t have to make any judgements or decisions to administer a shock

• Clear instructions with voice prompts

• Reliable and technologically advanced portable device that cannot cause any further harm to the casualty.

And if you buy an AED from us, we’ll train you too:

• Expert and friendly guidance and support from the UK’s leading first aid organisation, before and after you buy a defibrillator

• Free on-site practical demonstration

• Choose from our cost effective defibrillator plus training packages, giving essential practice using the defibrillator and administering CPR.

Please call 0844 770 4800 and quote SW12AED for more information or to arrange a FREE demonstration on your company premises.

A defibrillator is easy to use and could be the best investment you ever make.

Is your workplace equipped with a life saving defibrillator?
