Meeting the SEER standard.In January 2006, the Department of Energy increased theminimum SEER of HVAC units from 10 to 13. SEER, whichstands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, indicates theefficiency of different types of equipment. The majority ofsystems installed before 1992 are 10 SEER or below andwill continue to drop in efficiency as the systems age.

The chart on this page shows possible savings overan 8 SEER system for higher efficiency systems.SEER ratings are a lot like miles per gallon in cars.The higher the rating, the more efficient the unit — andthe more money you save.
