EDITORIAL NOTE

These are difficult years for publishers because costs are advancing much more rapidly than receipts. Even newspapers with a daily sale of more than one million copies are confessing themselves in danger of extinction, and all book publishers, both big and small, are having to consider more carefully than usual before they agree to publish new work. Our Society can not help but be affected by these conditions, and though happily we are far from suspending the publication of our annual volume, the unbroken sequence of which has been maintained since 1848, the Council would feel able to authorise the printing of more material if our membership increased. At present new members do no more than make good the losses incurred through death and resignation. A hundred more enthusiastic members in the next year would ensure that the Society need not curtail its output at a time when interest in the history of our two counties is probably greater and certainly more widely informed than it has ever been.

The Society is grateful to Dr. R. Dickinson and Mr. R. G. Rankin for generous donations towards the cost of illustrating this volume.

The Council wishes it to be known that authors alone are responsible for the opinions and statements in their several communications.
