Hello and welcome! This is Natasha Cooper, your Power English Coach.

Welcome to Season One, Advanced Week One!

Today you will learn a new song of the week, “Lilly” by Pink Martini.

In section “Grammar in a Minute” we’ll study the difference between the verbs

lie and lay.

In “Telephone in Business and Daily Life” we’ll start Chapter One, “Answering

the Phone”.

In “Socializing” (and we’ll be doing a lot of that) I’ll give you a few

conversation starters - разговорные гамбиты, с чего начать разговор. Meeting and

greeting people. Today we’ll be meeting and greeting new neighbors.

And every Class we’ll have an “Inspirational Story”. Today’s story is “You

Should Be as Smart as a GOOSE” by Jeff Neil. We’ll be discussing five lessons we

can learn from geese.

Today, as always, you’ll be learning easily, effortlessly and with fun.

Before we begin, let’s get into the state of Expanded Awareness (состояние

расширенного сознания). It’s a state of accelerated learning, of heightened

attention; a state, in which you better retain information. I’ll explain more about the

benefits of Expanded Awareness in “Master Key to Success” training.

So, sit up straight, feet flat on the floor. Drop your shoulders. Let’s start by

taking a few cleansing breaths. As you breathe in through your nose, breathe in light



energy and knowledge. And as you breathe out through your mouth, breathe out with

a sigh “haa”. And once again breathe in light energy and knowledge. And on the

exhale, breathe out all your troubles and concerns. Let go of everything that no

Now gather everyone and everything that requires your attention and put them

in a safe place outside this classroom. Trust that they’ll be taken care of while you

are taking care of yourself, improving your English, pursuing your dreams and

Now pick a spot in front of you above your eye level. It may be a spot on the

wall across the room, or if you are driving, pick a spot at a distance above your eye

1. Song of the Week: “Lilly” by Pink Martini

We are on page two of the Class Notes. Let’s go over the lyrics. Today’s song

of the week is “Lilly” by Pink Martini.



Lilly comes when you stop to call her. Please, repeat after me. Lilly comes

when you stop to call her. – Лили приходит, когда останавливаешься и ее

зовешь. When you stop to call her.

To stop to do something means остановиться, чтобы что-то сделать. А

перестать делать что-то – это to stop doing something. For example, I stopped

to call her – Я остановилась, чтобы ей позвонить. He stopped calling me – он

перестал мне звонить. He stopped smoking – oн бросил курить, т.е. He quit

smoking. She stopped eating candy – она перестала есть конфеты. А если вы

услышите такую фразу: Или обычно: I need to stop for gas. Но можно и так: I

need to stop to get some gas... – мне нужно заправиться, т.е. остановиться,

чтобы взять или купить бензин. I need to stop to get some gas. He stopped to call

her – он остановился, чтобы ей позвонить. To stop to do something –

остановиться, чтобы что-то сделать, а to stop doing something – перестать

что-то делать. Okay, let’s go on.

Lilly runs when you look away – Лили убегает, когда отворачиваешься. To

look away – отвести взгляд, посмотреть в другую сторону, отвернуться.

Lilly leaves kisses on your collar – Лили оставляет поцелуи на твоем

воротничке. Collar – воротник (для собак – ошейник). Color – цвет. They are

spelled differently, and they are pronounced differently. Color – for цвет.

C-O-L-L-A-R. Collar - воротничок или ошейник.

Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, stay! – Останься (стой), Лили!

The second verse. Второй куплет.

Lilly comes when you stop to call her

Lilly runs when you look away

Lilly leaves kisses on your collar

One day she passed him by. To pass someone by or to pass something by –

пройти мимо кого-то (чего-то). To pass someone by.

A twinkle in her eye – C озорной искоркой в глазах. Twinkle. A twinkle in her

eye.



He said, "She was meant for me!" – Она была предназначена для меня. To

mean – иметь в виду, предназначать. To mean – meant – meant, this is an

irregular verb.

But when he turned around – Но когда он оглянулся, обернулся (to turn

around)... he lost what he had found – Он потерял то, что нашел. Please note the

Past Perfect Tense here - had found. Because he had found her before he lost her.

agreement of tenses - согласование времен. He lost what he had found.

Oh, where can his Lilly be? – Где же его Лили? Где она может быть?

And again, the chorus.



Lilly leaves... long [i:]... Lilly – short [i].

Lilly leaves kisses on your collar.


The next verse.

He searched the city streets. To search – искать. You do a search on Google.

Вы делаете поиск в Гугле. He searched the city streets. – Он обыскал все

городские улицы. Please note the object is used with the definite article. Обратите

внимание, обстоятельство места идет с определенным артиклем. He searched

the city streets.

He tempted her with treats – Он пытался ее соблазнить. To tempt –

искушать, соблазнять. You can say, Oh, it’s so tempting – это так

соблазнительно. I really want to do this. This is so tempting.

He tempted her with treats – Он пытался ее соблазнить угощениями.

But nobody stopped to taste them – Но никто так и не остановился, чтобы

их отведать. See? Stopped to taste them.

Some are in his pocket – Какие-то (treats)... Some are in his pocket – у него в

кармане.



Some are in a locket – А какие-то в коробочке для леденцов. A locket –

коробочка для леденцов, табакерка. He couldn't bring himself to waste them. – У

него рука не поднималась... To bring oneself to do something – себя заставить

что-либо сделать. To bring oneself to do something. He couldn’t bring himself to

waste them – У него рука не поднималась потратить их впустую,

израсходовать их попусту.

Ever since she's gone – С тех пор, как она ушла. Present Perfect: She has

gone. Оr: She is gone, which is the same thing. Ever since she's gone some days he

can't go on – В какие-то дни он не может просто так дальше жить. To go on

– продолжать жить дальше.

She ruined him for another. To ruin – испортить, разрушить. She ruined

him for another. Что значит “испортила его для другой”? Это значит, что он

больше ни с кем другим не сможет быть. She ruined him for another. That means

he’ll never be able to be with anyone else after he’s been with her. Он уже с другой

не сможет жить.

Pressed up against the glass - Прижавшись к стеклу. He prays that she will

pass – Он молится о том, чтобы она прошла мимо.

Now he's living with his mother – И теперь он живет со своей мамой.

2. Grammar in a minute. Difference between the verbs LIE and

LAY.



Our next section is “Grammar in a minute”. Today I’d like to discuss the

difference between the verbs lie and lay. They are often confused. This is one of the

most typical and most frequent mistakes even native English speakers make. But

you’ll remember the difference and you will always use those verbs correctly. I

cringe (меня раздражает, передергивает) when I hear people use those verbs

incorrectly.

To lie means ложиться, лежать (самому). To lie down – лечь, прилечь. I’ll

go lie down – Я пойду прилягу. To lie is an irregular verb. To lie – lay – lain -

ложиться, лечь, лежать.

To lay on the other hand (класть, положить что-то) requires a direct

object, требует прямого дополнения. Why the confusion? Почему путаница?

Let’s see:

To lie – lay – lain (неправильный) - самому ложиться. So that’s an

irregular verb.

А что-то положить (by the way, also an irregular verb) - to lay – laid – laid.

So one is transitive, the other is intransitive

Infinitive Simple Past Past Participle

Transitive:

to lay

(положить)

laid

laid

Intransitive:

to lie

(лежать)

lay

lain



Посмотрите, lay (класть, положить) в настоящем времени такая же

форма, как у lie в прошедшем (lay). Отсюда вся путаница!

So, lie and lay seem to give people more difficulty than all the other irregular

verbs combined. Неправильные глаголы lie и lay, похоже, доставляют людям

больше трудностей, чем все остальные неправильные глаголы вместе взятые.

The Past Tense of lie (lay) looks just like the verb lay.

Today I’m going to give you a few tips so you’ll always remember which

verb to use: to lie – лежать, лечь, прилечь, or to lay something – положить что-

то.

First of all, remember:

Lie is a non-transitive verb and it doesn’t take a direct object (непереходный

глагол и не требует дополнения). I want to lie down. Lie down. I tell my dog: lie

down – лежать (ложись). Or, simply: down – лежать! (Это команда собаке).

Lay is a transitive verb. Помните, что lay (класть, положить) –

переходный глагол, and requires a direct object, и требует прямого дополнения

– положить ЧТО? Вы сами себя не можете положить.

E.g. I am laying the table. – Я накрываю на стол.

He laid a bet on the white horse. – Он поставил ставку на белую лошадь.

The hen has laid an egg. – Курица снесла яйцо.

To lay – что-то положить (какую-то вещь). И здесь очень часто

происходит ошибка, и многие американцы говорят lay, когда имеют в виду лечь

самому. Такая ошибка часто звучит: We are laying on the beach. – Это

неправильно. Если мы хотим сказать, что мы лежим на пляже, должно быть:

We are lying on the beach. Ложитесь - lie down, но никак не lay.

Эти глаголы любят давать на различных тестах. You’ll come across those

verbs in various language proficiency tests. И люди часто на этом “сыпятся”. Те,

кому надо подготовиться к TOEFL, к другим экзаменам, for those of you who are



preparing for TOEFL or other exams, I’m going to give you a good tip, я вам сейчас

дам хороший совет, который принесет большие результаты, особенно в

письменной речи, especially on a written test. Плюс вы можете себе сделать на

карточках эти шесть слов, носить с собой, и поначалу доставать, когда вам

нужно сориентироваться, как сказать, а тем более, как написать. Заучите их и

представьте: перед вами тест, вам надо вставить то или иное слово. Вы по

смыслу понимаете, что это положить или самому лечь, но вы путаетесь в

формах, потому что они настолько похожи. Что делать? Вы берете, и пишите

на листочке. Don’t bring a cheat sheet with you to the test. Шпаргалку не надо

приносить на контрольную. It may get you into trouble. Это наказуемо. But what

you can do... Но что вы можете сделать - это выписать на листочке, поскольку

вы их заучили, просто написать, чтобы было перед глазами ...

to lie – lay – lain

и

to lay – laid – laid

Вы пишите их друг под другом. И тогда сразу понятно, какую форму надо

использовать. Где один глагол, а где прошедшая форма другого. Это очень

помогает. This is very effective. This is just a little trick. Вот такой маленький

фокус. Isn’t that a good tip? Say it with me. That’s a good tip! – Это хороший

совет! You don’t want to flunk the test. You don’t want to fail the test. – Вы не

хотите “завалить” экзамен. To flunk the test or to fail the test.

The examples I want to give you is I lie down on my bed to rest – Я ложусь на

постель отдохнуть. Здесь будет lie, потому что я делаю это сама с собою (сама

это делаю). Соответственно в прошедшем времени: Yesterday, I lay there

thinking about what I had to do during the day. – Вчера я лежала там и думала о

том, что мне надо было сделать в течение дня. Past participle, прошедшее

причастие или причастие прошедшего времени: But I remembered that I had lain

there all morning one day last week. – Но я вспомнила, что на прошлой недели я

пролежала там все утро или я как-то пролежала там все утро.



To lie – лежать самому.

Lay – положить кого-то, уложить кого-то или что-то.

He laid the tools on the workbench. – Он положил инструменты на

верстак (workbench).

I will go lie down.

Yesterday we lay on the beach. - Вчера мы лежали на пляже (прошедшая

форма от глагола to lie).

That’s what I wanted to tell you about the difference between lie and lay.

3. The Telephone in Business and Daily Life: Chapter 1, “Answering

the Phone”

The next section today is “Telephone in Business and Daily Life”. We are on

page three of the Class Notes. For now I want you to keep your books closed. Grab a

pen or pencil and get ready to fill in the blanks. Возьмите ручку или карандаш и

приготовьтесь заполнять пропуски. It’s an excellent exercise. By the way, please,

come back to Class during the week as many times as you want. And I do hope that

you’ll be back many times and that you’ll keep practicing in Class. Or you can

So, “Answering the Phone”. Are you ready? Okay. Keep your books closed and

get ready to fill in the blanks.

“My phone is ringing. I pick it up and I hear:

“May I talk to Natasha Cooper?”

How do I say that it is I? In the third person.

“This is she” Or: “Speaking”

And if the call is for someone else in the family?

“Just a moment!”

Wondering who’s calling?

“May I ask who’s calling?”



And what if the family member they are trying to reach is out? Then I say:

“He is not in right now.” Or “She is not in right now.”

And ask if I can help.

“Is there something I can help you with?”

If not, I offer to take a message.

“Would you like to leave a message?”

When names are hard to understand, I ask the caller to spell.

“Could you spell that for me?”

Didn’t catch something? No problem, I just ask to repeat.

“Could you repeat that, please?”

And I always make sure that I got it right.

“Let me read this back to you.”

Especially phone numbers.

“Let me double-check you phone number.”

Then I promise to pass on the message.

“I`ll give him the message.”

Or:

“I`ll ask him to call you.”

If the matter is urgent, I try to help out.

“You can call him at work.”

And if the work number is not available, I suggest paging them:

“Would you like his pager number?”

But most people carry cell phones these days. So I say:

“Would you like his cell phone number?”

I bet I’d make a good receptionist.”

Let me quickly read it again.

I’d like to point out something here. Хочу здесь кое-что отметить. The

difference between the verbs to help and to help out. To help – помогать вообще.

I try to help - я стараюсь помочь.

Во втором случае: I try to help out – выручить в конкретной ситуации, т.е.

помочь, выручить в значении выручить в конкретной ситуации.

So to help – помогать вообще. Thank you for your help – спасибо за Вашу

помощь. А если кто-то меня выручил в какой-то ситуации, я могу сказать:

Thank you for helping out.

So here’s what I want you to do at home. I want you to study this chapter with the

CDs or cassettes, depending on what you are using. And if you still haven’t ordered

4. Socializing: Meeting and greeting people. Conversation starters.

Next section today is “Socializing”. I know many of you asked me to help you

learn short conversation starters. How do you meet and greet people? People at work,

new neighbors, maybe you go to a meeting, or a conference, or an event. How do you

strike up... to strike up a conversation - завязать разговор. So, how do you strike

up a conversation? How do you start a conversation, how do you strike up a

conversation with new people or people you are familiar with?

Today you will hear five conversation openings, five conversation starters that

Shari recorded for you. I’ve also posted them below. I want you to transcribe these

conversation starters and post your transcripts in Class. If you scroll your page down,



you can see the section “Advanced Week One. Conversation Starters” with five

soundtracks. Beneath those there’s a link “Post your transcripts here”, where you can

post your transcripts.

Hi, I’ve lived here for eighteen years. I love this neighborhood, and I hope that

you’ll like it too. Are you finding everything you need?

Hi, I noticed that you’re new in the neighborhood. When did you move in?

I live in the house on the corner. I’ve seen a lot of the neighbors come and go.

I’ve lived here for eighteen years. So if there something that you need, chances are I

can tell you how to find it.

Hi, I am Shari. I live in the house down by the pool. Have you met your

neighbors yet?

4. Inspirational Story: Five Lessons We Can Learn From Geese.

We are moving on to the next section, “Inspirational Story”. And that’s the story

about geese by Jeff Neil. We’ll be doing quite a few of his inspirational and

motivational talks. This one is my favorite. “You Should Be As Smart As a Goose”

– “Чтобы вы были такими умными, как гуси”.

Both in English and Russian the comparison to geese quite often is not

flattering. Как в русском, так и в английском сравнение с гусем часто не

является комплиментом. But nature’s way with this bird, it turns out, is very

different. Однако, в природе гусь - совсем другое дело, как выясняется. So, let’s

go over the transcript.

You Should Be As Smart As a Goose.

When you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in "V" formation,

experts tell us this is a great example of how nature's creatures can work together. –

года всегда с артиклями в таком сочетании, for the winter, for the summer, for the

spring, for the fall or for the autumn)... Я знаю, некоторые из вас просили, и я

is important for most of you, to point out the use of the definite and the indefinite

articles. For the winter: seasons are used with the definite article.

Flying along in "V" formation – летя... to fly along - потому что они летят

клином ... Formation, "V" formation – клин. Formation - здесь может быть

артикль неопределенный “a”, а может его и не быть, как в данном случае,

Experts... – эксперты вообще, то есть нулевой артикль. Не понятно какие,

не какие-то определенные, а эксперты вообще. Должен быть неопределенный

артикль, но неопределенный артикль может стоять только в единственном

числе, а здесь у нас множестенное; значит, будет, так называемый, нулевой

артикль, т.е. никакого. Experts tell us this is a great example of how nature's

creatures can work together. – Эксперты говорят (или по словам экспертов),

что это отличный пример.., а не факт, a не что-то еще; мы относим это к

категории примеров, поэтому неопределенный артикль. Когда мы говорим

“это” и называем что-то, как правило, будет неопределенный артикль, потому

что мы что-то называем впервые и относим его к категории или группе чего-то.

This is a great example – это отличный пример, как, можно сказать, божьи

твари (creatures – твари, создания), то есть как животные могут работать

вместе.

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates (an) uplift for the bird behind it. And by

flying in "V" formation the whole flock gains a 71 percent greater flying range. -

Вместе они могут пролететь на 71% дальше. Range – диапазон, расстояние.

Uplift – подъемная сила. Размахивая крыльями, каждая птица создает

подъемную силу для птицы позади себя. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates

(an) uplift for the bird behind it. Здесь Джефф Нил говорит an uplift, но ему так

проще произнести, хотя по идее, поскольку это абстрактное существительное,

то здесь нет необходимости в артикле. Но видите, как я сказала, вещь это

When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing. To rotate –

Geese honk from behind… From behind – сзади. Откуда? Сзади – from

behind. …To encourage those upfront to keep up their speed. – Гуси, летящие

позади, кричат и приободряют (encourage)… To encourage – приободрять,

призывать. … приободряют тех, кто впереди, не снижать скорость. To keep

up something – продолжать что-либо делать. Keep up the good work! – я вам

часто говорю в классе, вы не раз это от меня услышите. Так держать!

Молодец! Молодцы! Так и дальше работайте. Keep up the good work! А здесь

“...keep up their speed.”

And finally, if a goose gets ill and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out

with it and follow it down to lend help and protection. To lend help – оказывать

помощь. И последнее – если гусь заболевает, выпадает из клина, двое других

гусей вместе с ним покидают клин, спускаются на землю, чтобы помогать и

защищать его.

They stay with the fallen goose until it's able to fly – И они остаются с

выпавшим из клина гусем, пока он не сумеет снова полететь (Until it's able to

fly)... Помните? Придаточное времени или условия будет стоять в настоящем

времени. Until it's able to fly, or until it dies, and only then do they leave it. – ...Или

пока гусь не умрет, и только тогда они его оставят. Do стоит для усиления.

And only then do they leave it. Как по-русски это передать? И только тогда…

That’s a beautiful story, isn’t it? One of my favorite ones. I also asked Shari to

record this story. Her recording is somewhat different. It’s the same story, but it’s

told slightly differently than Jeff Neil does it. I’m going to play it for you. And I want

Five Lessons We Can Learn From Geese. And please, repeat after me.

When a goose flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the birds that follow. In a

“V” formation the flock can travel 71 percent farther.

Lesson One: People, who share a sense of community, can help each other get

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of

flying alone. Drag – сопротивление. Drag and resistance of flying alone.

It quickly moves back into the“V” formation to take advantage of the lifting

The geese flying in formation HONK to encourage those upfront to keep up with

качественная поддержка, когда приободряют (если хотите что-то сказать,

скажите слова приободряющие), тогда растет уверенность каждого человека в

своих силах. Иными словами, у него за спиной вырастают крылья, прямо как у

гусей.

When a goose gets sick, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to

HELP and PROTECT it. – Когда один гусь заболевает, двое гусей покидают

клин вместе с ним и опускаются на землю, чтобы помогать и защищать его.

Drop out of formation – это уже словосочетание, выпадают из рядов. Поэтому

здесь нет определенного артикля. And someone says, “Silly as a goose”… И

говорят, “глупый как гусь”… – silly as a goose. If only we had as much sense as

geese. Нам бы столь здравого смысла, как у гусей.

Lesson Five: If we have as much sense as geese, we will STAND by each other

in difficult times, as well as when we are strong. - И если у нас хватит столь же

чутья (или здравого смысла), как у гусей, мы будем поддерживать друг друга и
