Heather - International Office: =-) Yun Chuan: Hello! I am going to study pre sessional course this

June and study Master course in Sep. Are the accommodations I apply for are different?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello, Yes the accommodation is different for your pre-sessional course and for your masters. You will need to book for your pre-sessional course using the online shop here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/eltc and for your masters course here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply

Rianna Kim: hello, I haven't received any unconditional acceptance yet... and I was surprised to receive this email about accomodation first.. Does it mean I am accepted??

Heather - International Office: No, you will be emailed about accommodation and how to apply before you have an unconditional offer. Sherryl: I couldn’t attend the other web chats due to some reasons..

Sophie -International Office: That is fine Sherryl, ask away with any questions you may have for us today

emily: where do I find information on applying for university accommodation? I can't find fall 2014 information anywhere.

Heather - International Office: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply

All the information you need including how to apply is here.

maha sohail: If a person wants University accommodation, should he/she choose University catered accommodation or self-catered? What is the difference between these 2?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Maha, catered University accommodation means you will have a food allowance included in your rent price, which you can redeem with a GeniUS card that will be given to you. Self-catered means you will pay a cheaper rent but food will not be included. For more information on the differences between University accommodation, please visit: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective I hope this helps

Aditya: I would like to know what would be the amenities provided at the university accommodation? Like what stuff would be provided for when I move into my room? Just so I know what to bring when I move in

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Aditya, Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, chair and wardrobe. You would need to bring your own bedding and kitchen utensils. kitchens are equipped with fridges, cookers, microwaves, kettles and toasters.

Sherryl: I had already send a mail to ms. jessica and she said i should be joining this.. my question now is.. When do I receive a confirmation for my university accommodation and when is the payment due. Will it be after my Visa has been issued or before?

Heather - International Office: You will only be allocated your accommodation once you have your visa. If you have applied for accommodation already, then you just need to return the slip when you have your visa sorted, and then you'll be allocated accommodation. If you've not applied for accommodation yet, then you need to do this. Step-by-step instructions for how to apply:

Vinta Kemala: when is the deadline to apply for accommodation? Heather - International Office: There are no strict deadlines to apply, but there

are deadlines to apply for the accommodation guarantee to be applicable to you. Please see here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/guarantee

Rianna Kim: Is there any brochure for accomodation too? Such as the distance from accomodation, ensuit, food supply...

International Office: Hi Rianna, have a look here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/undergraduates/locations

Sherryl: According to step by step guide to applying for accommodation in the college website..i think i have reached only step3..

Heather - International Office: Okay Sherryl: i have applied for accommodation online. And i

received a confirmation form Heather - International Office: Okay Mohammed Hussain: Hello! I have a conditional offer at the Uni but I

have just recently taken the IB diploma examinations. My results come out in early July, will I be able to pre-book my accomodation before my results come out and my offer becomes accepted?

Heather - International Office: You can apply for accommodation as soon as you've accepted a conditional offer. However your accommodation will not be allocated until you have met all conditions of the offer nad have your visa. If you've applied by the deadlines in the accommodation guarantee then you should be fine to secure accommodation. Guarantee: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/guarantee Step by step how to apply: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/stepbystep

maha sohail: If a person wants University accommodation, should he/she choose University catered accommodation or self-catered? What is the difference between these 2?

International Office: Hi Maha - the difference is essentially freedom to cook what you like whenever you would like it, rather than know that some of your meals will be provided by a menu system. The catered definitely has advantages (like not having to do much

Page 4: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

cooking or washing up!) but some students prefer the flexibility of self-catering. It is all about personal choice

maha sohail: thank you Heather - International Office: =-) Sophie -International Office: No problem Maha. If you have any more questions

for us today, please ask! Sherryl: soo i should just wait now to get my visa processed

and then send the form back..is it? Ceit_ Accommodation office: You will need to send the form back once you have

received your visa Yuki Nakanishi: when can I start to stay in an accomodation? I'm

thinking of taking part in pre-sessional summer school which will start from August 11th.

Heather - International Office: For the pre-sessional, you need to read the following information regarding accommodation: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/eltc

Sherryl: ok..thanks.. Heather - International Office: =-) lionel: hello. im a prospective student and was having a

doubt. during summer time i was planning fly back home but if i were to stay what are the costs to stay at the university accomodations

Heather - International Office: It will depend upon what accommodation contract you have as to whether you can stay over the summer.

International Office: Hi Lionel - nice to see you here after I just emailed you! If you go for an extended contract the extra charge is proportionate to the full cost (i.e. there is a pro-rata weekly charge for the extra period you stay for)

International Office: Sorry for not addressing that point in the email :-/ Yun Chuan: I will be allocated the accomodation only until I get

the unconditional offer? Ceit_ Accommodation office: We can only allocate accommodation to those

students who have met the requirements of their course offer.

Sherryl: To get my visa done..i need to get the CAS number..approx by when will i get a follow up on that?

Heather - International Office: CAS are issued no more than 3 months before the course start date, so end June/beginning July for late Sept starts

Aditya: Thank you kruthika mohan: Hey! good morning! Im kruthika mohan.I have got a

conditional letter and I have choosen Univeristy of sheffield has my firm choice.I have satisfied all the

Page 5: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

conditions.I have to book my accomodation now.I want to book the highest category of rooms. Please suggest the nearest accomodation.I want a room with all the facilitieS.Please help me the choose the right kind of accomodation.

Heather - International Office: You will need to choose the accommodation you prefer. It is entirely up to you. Please take a look at the accommodation on offer on-line. You can then choose what you like the look of best: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation

Jocelyn: Hi, I am planning to visit the university soon. Is it possible to arrange room viewing on that day?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: HI Jocelyn, Unfortunately as we are full to capacity this year we are unable to show our accommodation to students. You may find the following virtual tour useful though http://www.accommodation.group.shef.ac.uk/tour09.html

Yun Chuan: After getting the unconditional offer, can I apply for accommodation with choosing my roommates?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Yun Chuan. Each student gets an individual room that they do not share with anyone else. You can choose preferences such as a single sex flat and the accommodation services will try to accommodate this. You cannot choose your flat mates

Sophie -International Office: I hope this helps! Mohammed Hussain: Great! Finally, I just went through the list for the

guarantee. It is clear but just to clarify, is the guarantee not applicable if I have chosen Sheffield as my insurance choice?

Heather - International Office: No we cannot guarantee students with Sheffield as insurance as we have limited places available, and until you are firm with us (i.e. if you don't meet your firm option's conditions) you are not coming to Sheffield.

Aditya: In the en-suite bathrooms, will we provided anything to help heat the water, during the winter months?

International Office: Hi Aditya, all heating and hot water costs are included in the room rates - all year round

maha sohail: any scholarship available to manage travel and accommodation costs for postgraduate students?

Heather - International Office: No, unfortunately there are not. lionel: That’s alright thanks =) International Office: Have a think about whether you would like to meet

with Ruth next month....?

Page 6: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Hyunji Cho: Hello, I'm going to go to Sheffield in this July for pre-sessional class. The accommodation package will begin from 26th July, but I want to go to the UK 1 week earlier for travelling. Could I keep my luggage in the accommodation?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello, we would only be able to allow you to store your items in the room from the start of your contract.

Yun Chuan: Thanks Sophie :) Yuki Nakanishi: Do I have to apply for accommodation for pre-

sessional separately? Heather - International Office: Yes, you will need to apply for pre-sessional

accommodation separate to accommodation for your main course: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/eltc

Hyunji Cho: Thank you Heather - International Office: =-) Aditya: In City and Central accommodation, how far are

the nearest banks and ATMs? Sophie -International Office: Hi Aditya, we have a number of banks represented

on or very close to the campus. When students arrive during your welcome week there will be information provided about opening a bank account and the International Student Support Team will provide advice to new students.

Akz: hi! i am going to start my pre-sessional course in the end of July. i would like to know do we need pay whole price of accommodation fee at once, or is it possible to pay partly?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello Aks, you would need to pay in full for your pre-sessional course via the online shop

Allegra: Hi, I have applied for a exchange to Sheffield from my home university in Canada, but have not received an offer yet. I don't have an applicant number, so I cannot complete the first step in applying for accommodation. Is there a different process for exchange students?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello, We do have accommodation set aside for exchange students, however, you will need to wait until you have been issued with an applicant number before you apply. You then apply in the same way as other students at the following link http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply

Rianna Kim: When exactly does accommodation contract start? a week before semester starts?

Page 7: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Rianna, Our accommodation contracts are due to start on 20th and 21st September 2014

kruthika mohan: what about private accommodation ? International Office: There are lots of private options in Sheffield, but

they are a bit trickier to secure. For example, you may be asked to pay a large deposit (not always safe) or to provide a UK-based guarantor. Think hard about going privately before you do (though many students choose to do so, and most are happy). The students' union can give advice on this also - http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/contacts/property

ASAMANE ATIAH EVANS: HELLO AM EVANS FROM GHANA, CAN I APPLY FOR ACCOMMODATION AS AM STILL WAITING FOR MY SCHOLARSHIP APPROVAL

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello, Yes you can still apply for accommodation if you are awaiting scholarship approval. Once you have applied you will be issued with a confirmation form which you will be asked to return to us once your funding has been confirmed

kruthika mohan: Can you send me a link for the application form ? International Office: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply This is for University accommodation Sherryl: one last question.. Heather.. just to get everything

straight.. Once i get a CAS follow up mail from the university by end of June/July... i will be able to apply for Visa and once that is done, i can apply for accommodation by sending back the form to get allocated.. soo when do i do the payment? Can it be done in instalments or in full?? Is the tuition fee payment also to be done after processing my visa?

Heather - International Office: No, you can apply for accommodation as soon as you've accepted a conditional offer with us. You will not be allocated accommodation until you have your visa, but your application will be held until then. Once you have your visa, you would then return a slip you get when you've applied for accommodation and it will then be allocated to you. Payments will not be made until your contract is signed and returned, and is then arranged with accommodation. This can be in instalments or in full - there are various options. Tuition fee payments can be made either when you arrive or before.

Heather - International Office: Information on rents: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/rents

Page 8: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Information on other tuition fee payments: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/fees/payment

Jocelyn: Can international students pay for accommodation in instalments?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Jocelyn, University accommodation payments are always taken in 3 instalments, usually October, January and April!

Vinta Kemala: What is the reason on determining whether we should choose 42 or 51 weeks contract?

International Office: Usually 51 weeks are chosen by Masters or PhD students who will stay in Sheffield during the summer period. Most undergrads pay for 41 weeks as they return home or travel over the summer period.

Yun Chuan: Does En suite room mean that I have the bedroom on my own and not shared with others?

International Office: En Suite refers to the bathroom - you have your own bathroom (en suite is French, btw). Our bedrooms are not shared, so even if you have a shared bathroom (shared with maybe 3 or 4 others), you will not share a bedroom.

Suleman: Hello, University Accommodation is available from which date for new student? My course will start on 22 sep...

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Our accommodation contracts will begin on 20th and 21st September depending on which accommodation you are allocated

kruthika mohan: Are parents allowed in university accommodation ? International Office: To visit or to stay? Jocelyn: Thanks Sophie Sophie -International Office: No problem, if you have any more questions,

please do ask Allegra: Thanks. When can I expect to be issued an

applicant number? Is there a deadline by which the university will respond to my application?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: You will be issued with an applicant number by your department, as i understand it most departments are currently in the process of issuing them, however, i would advise you to contact your individual dept. who will be able to update you on your application

raudanila: Hello, greetings to you:) International Office: And to you! kruthika mohan: To stay International Office: We have a limited number of studio flats and

family accommodation available, and sometimes parents will accompany their son or daughter here. There is some info here:

Page 9: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/family/applying

Yun Chuan: Ok! Thank you! I am sorry that I mean bathroom not bedroom...

Heather - International Office: En suite rooms have your own bedroom and bathroom. All rooms will be individual, but the difference between en-suite and not is that en-suites have their own bathroom too, whereas those without share a bathroom kitchen and living space.

Suleman: Shared room facility available? Either in the university or private accommodation? Or Only separate accommodation is available for students?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Suleman, we have a variety of different types of rooms available to suit our student’s needs, you can find full information here on the different room types we offer:http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/undergraduates/room-types you may be interested in contacting the Universities PropertywithUS team who deal with private sector accommodation in Sheffield http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/propertywithus

Sophie -International Office: Please do keep asking your questions today everyone, had some great questions already!

Rianna Kim: Does the 42 week contract then end before winter break or after? Because I'm thinking of leaving UK at the end of December...

Ceit_ Accommodation office: All of our accommodation contracts start in September on either a 42 or 51 week contract. The 42 week contract will end in July and the 51 week contract will end in the following September. the accommodation is yours for the full length of the contract and you would therefore not be required to move out of your accommodation over the vacations

TahirA: I am from Pakistan have received offer letter in PhD for chemistry but m finding my scholarship please help me regarding this as without scholarship can’t continue my PhD

Heather - International Office: Hi Tahir. Today's chat is about accommodation only. We are not discussing other issues today, but you can check the Pakistan web pages for details of scholarships and email [email protected] with any questions after.

Page 10: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

raudanila: I am from Malaysia and will start my PhD in this September intake. I will be coming with my family (husband and 4 children, aged 3-12years). Can I apply for the 3-bedroom apartment?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Raudanila, we do offer limited family accommodation. However as families have very specific and individual needs, we advise you contact the accommodation office directly for guidance [email protected] . Also you can contact the Student Union Advice Centre, who can offer advice and guidance for families and related matters like schools

http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/contacts/advice TahirA: good noon to every one Sophie -International Office: Hello Tahira! kruthika mohan: Thank you Heather - International Office: =-) lionel: you mentioned in an email to me earlier that 7000

GBP would comfortably cover my 'living and accommodation'. What exactly is included in this?

Heather - International Office: It all depends on what your spending habits are like, but £7,000 is an approximate guideline to cover the cost of your accommodation, food and basic living expenses. If you like going out a lot or spending money on meals out, you may want to budget more. We can only give guidelines because everyone is different.

Yun Chuan: What is the difference between En suite and Deluxe??

Heather - International Office: A slightly bigger bed and a little more room in the bedroom.

Vinta Kemala: What are the differences between the university and private accommodation? (in term of the facility, cost, distance)

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Vinta, the main benefits that we can offer students is tall bills included; there will be no hidden costs. We can offer security and 24 hour a day customer services. It is also a great opportunity to meet other students. I would advise you to have a look at our website; there is lots of really useful information on there. You may also wish to look on our Facebook pages for feedback from other students who already live here!

Yun Chuan: Okay Thank you Heather Heather - International Office: =-) Allegra: One more question - I will only be on exchange at

Sheffield for the Fall term, but the accommodation

Page 11: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

contracts are for 42 weeks minimum, from what I can see. Is there any way to sign a shorter contract, for one term only?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: We have a number of beds avaibale for students who will only be staying with us for one semester. On the application form there is the option to choose accommodation for 1 semester only.

Aditya: Aside from accommodation, what would be a good budget per month for a student?

International Office: Hi Aditya - totally depends on you. Transport is usually nil, as people tend to walk places. Food is from £35/£40 a week as a minimum, books are minimal given our libraries on campus (though buying a few core texts is a good idea). Entertainment costs are really variable (if you like live music and shopping, you might spends lots!) but the Students' Union is the very best in the UK so that is a cheap way to stay entertained. You could always find part time work as well...there are lots of jobs on campus

raudanila: okay, thanks Sophie for the link :) May I know how much is the rent for 3 bedroom apartment in City and Central Campus for 51 weeks?

Heather - International Office: All rents are given here for you: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/rents

Yun Chuan: I've applied Master course but I want to travel in next summer, so do you recommend me to apply accommodation for 42 or 51 weeks?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: If you wish to travel in the summer, you may be better suited to a 42 week contract as these are due to finish in mid-July

Vinta Kemala: Okay. Thank you Ceit :D Heather - International Office: =-) lionel: thanks for the help heather =) International Office: She has just stepped out for a minute! Vinta Kemala: One last question, If I choose to stay in studio flats,

is it allowable for my husband to stay in my accommodation during his visit? (only 1/2 weeks)?

Heather - International Office: If you're living in a studio accommodation, by yourself, then it is up to you. If you are sharing accommodation or a flat, then you will need to check with your flatmates. In any case you'd need to check your terms and conditions when you get your contract

raudanila: thanks Heather, I've browsed the page before, but I can't see any in the list the 3 bedroom apartment,

Page 12: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

is Opal 2 Apartments is the same as 3 bedroom apartment?

Heather - International Office: I'm not sure. If it's a family house/flat with 3 beds you want, then Opal 2 won't have this. You'd need to contact the accommodation office for details of family accommodation. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/contact

Rianna Kim: So if I want to stay for only 1 semester, shorter than 42 weeks, do I have to fill in sth on application form? Because I couldn't find any shorter contract in the website..

Ceit_ Accommodation office: When you log into the application form it will ask you how long your course of study is, there will be a drop down menu for you to select 'semester 1' when you submit your application form, we will then know to book you accommodaition for 1 semester only

Yuko Moriyama: Is applying for accommodations 'first come, first served', or is it a lottery if there are many applicants for the same type of room?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Yuko, please note students are not guaranteed their choice of accommodation just a room as long as they meet the guarantee. However if you meet all points of the guarantee you will definitely have a room in University accommodation. The deadline is 8 August 2014 for applications but please check our guarantee which can be found at below link, so please check this out: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/guarantee

Allegra: Great. Thanks What is the approximate cost for one term then?

Heather - International Office: Accommodation is allocated normally on the length of contracts given in the rents list: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/rents

For any shorter you need to contact the accommodation for details and availability: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/contact

Yun Chuan: Thank you Ceit:) If I want to apply for single sex apartment, which apartment suits me? The Ranmoor Village, The Endcliffe Village or City and Central Campus??

International Office: Hey Yun Chuan, location makes no difference when it comes to single sex apartments. Location

Page 13: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

matters because of your proximity to facilities/campus/transport routes/parks.

Yun Chuan: Btw, I am postgraduate. Heather - International Office: =-) International Office: Hey again - you can request single sex apartment

living in any of our dorms Suleman: If someone contracted with the uni

accommodation but as he came here he decided to go in private accommodation what will be the future of that contract which was assigned with uni accommodation? Any restriction regarding this?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Once a student has fully accepted a residence contract, then they are legally bound by the terms and conditions and would therefore be liable for the payments and would not be released from contract. The student would only be released from contract if they either left the University or if they found a replacement tenant to take over the contract

Aditya: Thank you for the help Heather - International Office: =-) Rianna Kim: Thanks. Then is the 1semester contract payment

also different from staying 42weeks? Heather - International Office: If you are staying for 42 weeks then you may pay in

instalments, or in full. If you are staying for one term only, then you need to contact the accommodation office directly for details: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/contact

Tenebe Rahila Vincent: How much does it cost t Sophie -International Office: Hi Tenebe, you can see all the costs of

accommodation options with the University here http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/rents

Tenebe Rahila Vincent: ok Sophie -International Office: If you have any more questions, please do ask Yun Chuan: Thank you for answering my questions with

patience. Heather - International Office: You're welcome. International Office: You are very welcome - we understand this is a big

decision! Ammara Mushtaq: helllo everyone Sophie -International Office: Hi Ammara! What would you like to ask us today? Allegra: Thanks that's very helpful Rianna Kim: Thank you very much# Heather - International Office: =-) Sherryl: Heather.. soo can i do the tuition fee payment now

if I’m willing to?

Page 14: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Heather - International Office: If you have an unconditional accepted offer, I think you may be able to make arrangements for your tuition fees but will need to check with the fees team. [email protected]. Today's chat is on accommodation so we strongly suggest you stick to this topic and email any other queries to us at [email protected]

Sophie -International Office: We can see there are lots of you in the chat today, please do not be afraid to ask us any questions you may have, we are here for another 45 minutes!

Heather - International Office: Feel free to answer the country poll below, now open

Yuko Moriyama: Thank you very much! Sophie -International Office: No problem Yuko Suleman: Uni Accommodation rent included the food/meal

cost? International Office: Hi Suleman - yes, if you stay in catered

accommodation (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/catering/genius). If you stay in self-catered accommodation then you must provide for all of your own meals.

Raudanila: If we are living in the university accommodation, what and how far will be the school for children aged 6-12?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello, we do offer some family accommodation and there are some primary schools avaibale in the local area. Depending on the accommodation you are offered, the schools could be anything from a 10-20 minute walk. If you have any queries with regards to family accommodation you can contract Barbara Birch who is the family accommodation Officer: [email protected]

Yun Chuan: I am going to study master in biomaterial and the building I study in is Sir Robert Hadfield Building, so maybe opal 2 is the nearest accommodation?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Yun Chuan, it is your decision what accommodation would be best for you - some students prefer the busy central locations, others prefer the leafy, quieter student villages. Our advice would be to not rush your decision and decide what you want most from your accommodation!

Sherryl: okay! thank you soo much Heather krol: Hello, my name is Carolina from Chile International Office: Hey Carolina! Ammara Mushtaq: I’ll be visiting Sheffield as an elective student only

for a month in September, I’ll be rounding in royal

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hello Ammara, As you would be studying for only one month in September, i would ask that you contact us at the office directly at the end of August for availability of accommodation. We cannot guarantee students studying medical electives, however, we would be happy to check our availability at that time and would try to help where possible. You should email us at [email protected]

Tenebe Rahila Vincent: can I ask a question regarding the CAS number? Heather - International Office: For CAS questions, please email us at

[email protected] because this chat is for accommodation only today. Thanks!

Sam: Hello, I'm just wondering that when I can live in the accommodation?

International Office: Hey Sam, do you mean the dates of the accommodation occupancy? Contracts normally begin around September 21st or 22nd each year, but this would be confirmed nearer the time

International Office: No, not at all! However, if you come to the UK without any accommodation having been arranged you may find it a stressful experience (hotels can be expensive, for example). Some students do this, however, but it does take careful planning. Can I ask where you are from Suleman?

Suleman: Is it compulsory to arrange the accommodation, make a contract with Uni or private accommodation before coming here?

International Office: No, not at all! However, if you come to the UK without any accommodation having been arranged you may find it a stressful experience (hotels can be expensive, for example). Some students do this, however, but it does take careful planning. Can I ask where you are from Suleman?

Vamesh: Hello everyone! I have applied for a studio room. What are the chances of my getting a studio room?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Vamesh, We can offer a guarantee for a room in University accommodation however, we cannot guarantee students their first choice. We always try to allocate accommodation based on the students first choices and if we are unable to then we offer them the next best match where possible. At this time it is impossible for us to predict how many students will apply for a studio room and what the chances are of you being offered one.

krol: So, I have a question about the cost of accommodation, I mean, I need to know if it`s a benefits or I need to pay for accommodation?. In that case, how much is the cost?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Krol, you can see all the costs of accommodation options with the University here http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/rents

The accommodation cost includes all bills (water, electricity & Internet) plus 24 hours security, residential support and cleaning of the communal areas.

Raudanila: thanks Ceit, i will contact Barbara then Heather - International Office: =-) Sam: Yes, indeed. Also, is there any services of

borrowing a computer in the room? Sophie -International Office: Hi Sam, Students can now loan laptops for free for

up to 8 hours at a time in the Information Commons, St. Georges Library and Health Science Library, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Western Bank Library. They can be used anywhere in those buildings but cannot be taken out of the buildings.

Ammara Mushtaq: August would be too late and i wouldn't be able to arrange for alternatives at that time. can't we look for availability now/

International Office: Hi Ammara, the problem may be that if we provide a room in September for one month only, that room will stand empty for the rest of the semester or perhaps even the year. For this reason we must wait to see how (over-)subscribed our dorms are nearer the time.

Ammara Mushtaq: ? Suleman: I am from Pakistan... International Office: If you have friends or family in the UK or near

Sheffield then coming here without booked accommodation can be much easier

Aditya: Opal 2 is a university owned accommordation or private, btw?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Opal 2 is managed by the University, so although we do not own the building, all accommodation contracts offered to students who wish to live there are University Contracts

Saylee Jangam: Hi! When you apply for accommodation with a conditional offer, do you need to pay a deposit?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: You will only be asked to pay a deposit once you have been made an offer of a room in our accommodation

Page 17: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Vamesh: Thank you Ceit! :D Ammara Mushtaq: so i can only know the availability in end of august? International Office: For University accommodation, yes. But there are

private options which are very popular with our students also available to you.

Raudanila: How far is the Ranmoor Village and Endcliffe Village from the Information School building?

International Office: Probably a 20 minute walk (depending how long your legs are and how fast you walk), or under 5 minutes if you take a bus.

raudanila: Is it walking distance? International Office: Yes! Suleman: Ahhh I was just planning to come here little bit

earlier to acclimatize myself to very changed environment as compared to my home land...

Ammara Mushtaq: can you let me know of those options? Ceit_ Accommodation office: I would advise you to contract the PropertywithUS

team who help and advise students on private sector options. Their website and contact details can be found here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/propertywithus

Saylee Jangam: And is an offer of a room only made once you get your visa?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: we can only offer you accommodation once you have been issued with your visa, have confirmed your funding and have accepted your offer of a place to study a course.

raudanila: really? I can walk very fast with my short legs:) International Office: Haha Suleman: ya sure... International Office: Good good Sophie -International Office: We have 25 minutes left everyone, do keep asking! Yun Chuan: Do you have a map that I can see where are the

accommodations and the campus? Ceit_ Accommodation office: There are some great maps available at the

following webpage http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/visitors/mapsandtravel

International Office: This one shows where residences are: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.347511!/file/central-jan-2014.gif

Sam: I am an international student and applying for the en-suite. Can my application be guaranteed? Also, how many students living in the en-suite share a kitchen? Thank you

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Sam. We offer an accommodation guarantee, full details of which can be found here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/apply/guarantee

Page 18: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

we can guarantee Uni accommodation if you meet all the requirements, however, we cannot guarantee students their first choice. Our flats come in different sizes so we have 6 bedroomed flats up to 12 bedrooms!

Suleman: Thanks for the whole team for giving me useful advices about ambiguities that was in my mind...

International Office: No problem at all Suleman. International Office: Good luck with everything. Saylee Jangam: So lets say I have accepted my offer and

have applied for accommodation but am still waiting for my visa as well as my scholarship outcome. I still won't be offered a place in accommodation till I get my visa right? And once I do, I will be asked to pay full rent/deposit? Also, when is the latest you can apply for accommodation?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Saylee, you will have to wait until you get your visa yes. You will have to pay a deposit only, rent is paid in 3 instalments. Accommodation services do not ask students to pay deposits until they have sent out offers of accommodation. The latest you can apply for accommodation is 8th August 2014.

Raudanila: Just need your personal opinion, is the university accommodation welcome students with big family like us? or should I just look for private accommodation?

International Office: How big is your family? Vamesh: Do you need to have a visa before you will

have a confirmed accommodation? This is an undergraduate from India.

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Vamesh, you will need to have your Visa confirmed before you will be offered accocmmodation.

krol: What is most convenient to look for an accommodation

International Office: The most convenient way is on our website. Start here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective

Raudanila: 6 of us, I am the student, my husband and 4 kids will be accompanying me. Kids aged between 3 to 12

Page 19: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

International Office: Yes I would say private accommodation for a family of your size. Where are you from Raudanila? Yun Chuan: Thank you very much! You all so kind. International Office: No problemo! Sophie -International Office: Glad to help Yun Chuan Saylee Jangam: So it is best to apply for accommodation once I get

my visa since that's when it will be processed? Sophie -International Office: Saylee, you do not have to wait for your visa to

apply for accommodation. If you want, you can apply for accommodation now!

Raudanila: I am from Malaysia, will commence study this September

International Office: Okay, great. How about I put you in contact with someone with a family who can give you advice? We have some PhD students here who have found private accommodation here in Sheffield. Please reply to this with your email address (it will not be seen by everyone else)

victor: Hi i noticed one can pay in 3 instalments. when are the instalment deadlines?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Our accommodation payments are automatically set up to coincide with UK student loan payments. Payments will be required in October, January and April

krol: What is cheapest?, to looking for an accommodation with you or to looking for a place in the private area?

International Office: There's no way to say. Our rents look higher than private rents, but that is because all bills are included, insurance is included, and internet is included. If you go privately you must factor these expenses in (and Sheffield can be cold in winter, so having the heating on every day gets expensive! But in your dorm it is always on and the cost never changes)

Tanay: Hey. Are gym and swimming pool services included in the rent for opal 2?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Tanay, There are Gym facilities and a gym available at Opal 2, however, these are charged at an additional cost and are not included in the accommodation contract. Prices can be obtained from opal 2 directly. You can email then at [email protected]

hrtbd: hello you all Sophie -International Office: Hello hrtbd. What would you like to ask today? Sam: Sorry I don't understand. Do you mean that there

are 6 to 12 students living in a self -catering type of en-suite share a kitchen?

Page 20: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Sorry i mean that we have flats of varying size. some of our flats are 6 bedroomed, meaning that 6 people will share the communal and kitchen area of the flat. Some are 8, 10 and 12 bedroomed. The number of people sharing determines the size of the kitchen and communal area. If you are offered accommodation in a 6 bedroomed flat, then you would only share with those 6 people, you would not be sharing with 12

Vamesh: As an international student, I would like to attend the international orientation. Will my accommodation dates be changes to support this?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Vamesh. Accommodation for Orientation Week has to be booked separately. For more information regarding this, please visit http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/international/welcome/arriving/orientation

hrtbd: actually i already did apply for accommodation as soon as they were open but i still haven't heard anything

Sophie -International Office: Hi hrtbd, Allocation process does not start until mid-July, and will only commence when you have received your CAS number and have your visa confirmed. CAS numbers are issued no sooner than 3 months before the start date of your course

Ammara Mushtaq: I am sorry i missed the answer to my question here. So I’ll only know of the availability of housing with you guys in August?

International Office: For University accommodation, yes (for elective students). But there are private options which are very popular with our students also available to you.

Saylee Jangam: Which accommodation is closest to the engineering department?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Our City and Central accommodation is located closest to the Engineering department, however if you don't like the idea of City living, there are good bus services running from the villages at concessional rates for students. Alternatively it would be a 20-30 minute walk

Raudanila: Thanks for your help, really appreciate it:) International Office: 10 minutes til we finish! Yun Chuan: The internet in the university accommodation is

wifi or ethernet? Sophie -International Office: University accommodations have wifi Allegra: Where are the City and Central Campus

accommodations located? I am unable to find an address

Ceit_ Accommodation office: we have Opal 2, which is located on St. Georges Close and has the following postcode S3 7HD and we also have Broad Lane Court, which is located on Broad Lane with a post code of S1 4BU

krol: ok. I understand. So, I lived in a dorm during my studies in the University of Concepción.

International Office: Ah cool. What are you coming to study here? (Masters?)

Tanay: Hey. What would be the cost to use gym and swimming pool services at opal 2? Also is Wi-Fi cost included in rent for opal 2?

International Office: Hi Tanay - it is best to ask Opal 2 directly for these as Ceit advised ([email protected])

Tess: Do we have to pay deposits or similar payments for housing when we apply? Does holding a conditional offer affect the application process?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Tess, you will only have to pay a deposit once you have been allocated a room. Students who are have accepted an unconditional or conditional offer may apply for accommodation and once your results are confirmed and you receive your CAS then the accommodation office will allocate accommodation

Saylee Jangam: Thank you. How far is Endcliffe village from the engineering department?

International Office: This map gives you an idea (Endcliffe Village is bottom left): http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.347511!/file/central-jan-2014.gif

accommodation, right? But I am applying the en-suite for self-catering, can I still buy food or a meal when I do not to cook?

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Sam, self-catered accommodation comes with a fully fitted kitchen, however, if you do not fancy cooking, there is a cafe, dining room and bar available on the Endcliffe village, there is a bar which sells food on the Ranmoor village and lots of eating outlets located around the University as well as lots of independent restaurants and cafes! You'll never go hungry

Page 22: Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat · Transcript of Accommodation and International Office Web Chat 28th May 2014 BST ... Is there any brochure for accomodation

Tess: Are housing allocations based on a first come first served basis, or will they all be allocated on the same day? Is there any sort of guarantee for international students?

Sophie -International Office: Tess, housing allocations will not commence until mid-July. If you meet all of the points of our guarantee and apply by 8th August 2014 you will be guaranteed a room in University accommodation. This is the same for all students

Aditya: If the accomm contracts start from the 21st, what can international students do regarding attending the orientation week if we arrive earlier than when our accomm is ready?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Aidtya, please visit: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/international/welcome/arriving/orientation for more information regarding accommodation for Orientation week

hrtbd: And for the CAS number do i need to make any special application to obtain it?

International Office: The AS application process is completely different to accommodation. I advise you to read everything on this page. CAS numbers aren't issued until 3 months before the course start date (and when you hold an Unconditional offer): http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/international/welcome/cas-application/index

krol: Could you please, explain me what about the system of broad lane court flates?

International Office: Hey krol - we are out of time to answer. Please email [email protected] and they can answer this in detail

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Our accommodations at Broad Lane Flats are mainly shared bathroom accommodation. The rooms are located on corridors with bathroom facilities and kitchen/communal areas are located intermittently along the corridor

krol: Gracias International Office: de nada Sophie -International Office: This chat will be closing in 3 minutes! International Office: ! Ammara Mushtaq: I am sorry i missed the answer to my question yet

again. i am going to stay on this window now. So will I know of availability of housing for 1 month of September in last week of august only? Thanks!

Ceit_ Accommodation office: Hi Ammara, we will only be able to check our availability of our accommodation for you in August. We are not able to guarantee you accommodation as an elective student therefore

Ray: Hi, can I borrow a computer with screen for the whole year in the accommodation?

Sophie -International Office: Hi Ray, unfortunately you cannot borrow computers in the accommodation. You can borrow lap tops for up to 8 hours per day from certain University libraries but that is all. Hope this helps
