Welcome

Welcome to Elmhurst College!

As a transfer student, your goals and expectations are diΩerent from those you had as a freshman. You’re more experienced now, ready to move toward the finish line of your college experience. At Elmhurst, you’ll find a new world of opportunity: programs that suit your specific needs, people with your best interests at heart, and a college with a growing reputation for excellence.

For example, check out “America’s Best Colleges,” the study by U.S. News & World Report. Elmhurst ranks among the top schools in the region. Or pick up The Princeton Review: it calls Elmhurst “a small college with a big bang,” one that oΩers “an intimate academic experience” and “a surprisingly broad variety of solid academic departments.”

On our campus, you’ll become part of an open, welcoming community that includes students from every ethnic, racial, and religious background and from many states and countries. You won’t feel like a newcomer for long. And you’ll get to know plenty of transfer students with experiences a lot like yours. One in three of our students come to us from another college or university. We understand your par-ticular concerns and needs, and we’re deeply committed to your success.

Our admission counselors are determined to get to know you as an individual, and to make the transfer process smooth sailing. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with a counselor to ask questions, evaluate your transcripts, and develop a clear roadmap toward your Elmhurst degree. We look forward to seeing you soon!

If you are entering Elmhurst from a four-year institution, you may transfer 24 course credits (96 semester hours). You will complete at least eight courses at Elmhurst.

My Elmhurst Experience

Elmhurst has a lot of programs that prepare youfor a career. I have an internship now, and my professor has introduced me to CEOs of ad agencies and other people who can help me finda job after graduation.

Anar Akhundov

I fell in love with Elmhurst the first day I visited.Everyone welcomed me and tried to make me feel at home. I was nervous about transfer-ring, but everyone’s so friendly that it was an easy transition.

Julie Provenza

As the editor of the newspaper at Elmhurst, I’vegotten a lot of experience—not just covering big stories, but also managing writers, producingthe paper and selling advertising. It’s great prep-aration for the future.

Eric Lutz

TransferGuide_Body.indd 6TransferGuide_Body.indd 6 9/15/10 10:13 AM9/15/10 10:13 AM

I felt very comfortable transferring to Elmhurst because the teachers and the other students were so welcoming. Then when I joined the base-ball team, I found an instant group of friends—guys I hang out with all the time now. And being a team captain has helped me learn about leadership, teamwork and organizing my time.

Nicole SpizzirriI’ve dived into a lot of diΩerent areas at Elmhurst that I might not have explored at a bigger school. I’ve been on the mock trial team, I did student government, I’m an Alpha Phi, and I traveled to Turkey. It’s allowed me to make somegreat connections and to grow—both personallyand professionally.

Financial Aid and ScholarshipsTo Apply for Financial Aid You’ll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Tips on Financial Aid • Start the process early. If you’re applying for

financial aid for the Fall Term, start before March 1 if possible. With an early start, you’ll have time to spare if you make a mistake or need help along the way.

• Never exclude yourself from consideration forfinancial aid. You won’t know for certain if you qualify unless you apply.

• Read the FAFSA instructions carefully. Evenif you don’t know about a particular rule, its provisions will apply to you.

• Take the process one step at a time. We knowyou’re eager to get your college finances in order, and you may try to do everything at once. Just relax and take each step in order.

• Keep copies of the materials you file.

My Elmhurst Experience

Transferring from a community college and com-muting from home to a four-year school where you live on campus was a big transition. But the faculty at Elmhurst gave me a lot of guidance in choosing courses and getting involved, and it was easy to meet people and make friends through my major. There’s a sense of community here that’s really special.

Chris Hernandez

I’ve changed since I’ve been at Elmhurst. I’ve met a lot of people from diΩerent backgrounds and diΩerent religions, and it’s helped me become a more open and welcoming person.

Chrissy Stelter

TransferGuide_Body.indd 12TransferGuide_Body.indd 12 9/9/10 4:45 PM9/9/10 4:45 PM

Jacob ScottAt Elmhurst it’s easy to get involved at a high level very quickly. My second semester here I was news editor for the newspaper. I also have an internship with the Niebuhr Center, and I’m a national fellow with the Interfaith Youth Core. Getting involved like this reminds me that regular people can make a diΩerence, both here on campus and in the world.

Before coming here I spent two years at a big university, and I got sick of the big class sizes and the lack of personal interaction. Elmhurst is a good fit for me because the professors have o≈ce hours and they actually talk to you without having to look up your ID number. The community here is so close knit and intimatethat the College seems like a second home.

Frequently Asked QuestionsIs Elmhurst a “transfer-friendly” college?Absolutely! About one in three of our students comes to us with experience at another college or university, and more than 300 transfer students join the Elmhurst College community each fall. We even oΩer a special orientation just for transfers.

Can I visit the campus and sit in on a class?Yes, we welcome your visit to campus, whether you want to join us for a special transfer student event or arrange your own visit day. Please visit us online at www.elmhurst.edu/visit for details.

How will I know if my courses will transfer?Along with your admission packet, you will receive a Transfer Credit Evaluation showing all general education courses fulfilled, the total number of transferable credits, and any courses that did not transfer. Within a few weeks after admission, you’ll receive a major evaluation detail-ing all courses approved by the department for fulfillment of major requirements.

Does my grade-point average at Elmhurst include prior coursework? You will have two grade-point averages: one for Elmhurst only, and one that reflects all of your college-level work. The combined GPA is used to determine your eligibility for gradua-tion honors.

Do any majors have GPA requirements for admission? Yes. Here’s a rundown:• Nursing majors must have a minimum 2.75

cumulative GPA, with a 2.75 GPA in science courses.

• Education majors need at least a 2.75 cumula-tive GPA.

• Majors in speech-language pathology need aminimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

How do I learn about specific department requirements? Please visit www.elmhurst.edu/academics and click on Departments and Programs.

When do I register for classes? If you’re starting at Elmhurst in the Fall Term, you’ll meet with an advisor and register during the summer. If you’re starting in Spring Term,

you’ll meet with an advisor and register in January. Watch the mail for more information on advising dates once you’ve received your accep-tance letter.

Do I need an associate’s degree before I can transfer to Elmhurst? No, you don’t need an associate’s degree, and you don’t need to have a certain number of credits completed. If you transfer to Elmhurst with fewer than 30 hours, however, we’ll look at your high school records in addition to your college-level work in making an admission decision.
