TEKS-5TH GRADE• (4) In geometry and measurement, students will classify t wo-dimensional f igures, connect
geometric attributes to the measures of three-dimensional f igures, use units of measure, and represent locat ion using a coordinate plane. In data analysis, students will represent
and interpret data.• (5) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathemat ical process standards to
classify t wo-dimensional f igures by attributes and propert ies. The student is expected to classify t wo-dimensional f igures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic
organizers based on their attributes and propert ies.
In today’s lesson, the student is expected to: (A) ident ify and label the different types of transformat ions.
WHAT’S TRANSFORMATION?• Transformation: An operation that maps or moves the
points of a figure in a plane. • The original shape of the object is called the pre-image
and the final shape and position of the object is the image under the transformation. • Three types of transformations are translation,
reflection, and rotation. • A transformation can include a slide, flip, or turn.

WHAT’S A TRANSLATION? A translation is a transformation of the plane that
slides every point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.

WHAT’S A REFLECTION?A reflection is a transformation in which a geometric figure is reflected “flipped” across a line, creating a mirror image. That line is
called the axis of reflection.

WHAT’S ROTATION?Rotation is a transformation in which a plane figure turns around a fixed center point. In other words, one point on the
plane, the center of rotation, is fixed and everything e lse on the plane rotates about
that point by a given angle .
