2014 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF WESTERN MONMOUTH COUNTY

CONTINUING OUR IMPACT Here are a few ways the Y shaped lives in 2014

Youth Development “This past summer my eldest daughter hit a low point. At 15 she began having anxiety attacks and suffered from depression. When I was forced to call mobile response and I was told she needed medication my response was, ‘No, she doesn't. I'll send her to the Y’. In a matter of months, as a result of the Leaders In Training Program offered at the Y and the consistent support and positive reinforcement of the staff, she has done a complete turnaround. She has developed the ground work for the social skills needed to cope with peer pressure. Her self esteem grew to a new level and the confidence poured from her. She learned time management, problem solving skills and how to manage and work through difficulties.

These are the things that the YMCA provides. These are the things that matter to parents and members of our community. It's more than a hang out. These people are family and the Center feels like home. Our children rely on and look forward to spending time there. They are excited not about video games or music videos but the “Buddy Walk” for Down Syndrome, “Walk For A Cure” for breast cancer and 5K Runs to benefit Homes For Hero's. I walked as far as I could with them at 9 months pregnant! That's how infectious their spirit is. Camping, lock-ins, basketball, pep squad, book clubs, health and fitness. Some of these children wouldn't have these experiences without them.”—-Chalimar

Healthy Living “This New Year’s Day I would like to express on behalf of myself and my family just how much we appreciate the wonderful staff at the Western Monmouth County YMCA. We have been members for almost a decade. Our two children have enjoyed the wonderful summer camps, school before and after care, babysitting and thrived in the day care program.

I am so grateful for the services provided by this facility. It’s an understatement to say that the YMCA has had a positive impact on me and my family’s life. I had been a member for a while when I finally decided to start taking classes. I started with Joy Aerobics. I lost over forty pounds taking that and other wonderful classes like Spin, Step and Dance. I was feeling great as I felt my health improving. Little did I know that I would soon be battling breast cancer.

The day I was diagnosed with cancer I returned to the YMCA. I continue to work out almost daily during my treatment with chemotherapy and radiation and now Tamoxifen. In my experience, exercise involves moving and breathing which is both life affirming and a good source of pain relief for me. I believe that regular exercise helped me withstand the worst of my treatment with much less discomfort and fatigue than I may have otherwise endured. The friendly, approachable and understanding staff helped me through some tough days. With all the challenges I still face this holiday season, both personal and professional, I feel that the YMCA continues to help me through the worst of it. The YMCA has been very generous to me and my family. These few words can barely express my feelings of gratitude towards the Western Monmouth County YMCA. Thank you! You gave me hope and that is all I need.” —-Jennifer

Social Responsibility We help people give back and assist their neighbors by offering them opportunities to volunteer, advocate and support programs that strengthen community.

As the recipient of a Healthy U Grant for building healthier communities and in partnership with the New Jersey State YMCA Alliance and the Freehold Rotary Club, our Freehold Borough Community Center installed a water fountain and did park enhancements throughout Freehold Borough in 2014.

Freehold, Old Bridge & Hightstown Branches.

1,450 WORKING PARENTS

Had support and peace of mind that their children were safe and engaged in our Child Care & School Age Child Care Programs in Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Manalapan & Marlboro school districts.

sense of belonging & got healthier through membership at one of our 5 branches.
