RESEARCH IS AN ONGOING ACTIVITY
This is not mirrored in publication:
• Articles still static objects
• Often figure number restrictions
• Figures are static
• Data often not included or relegated to supplementary files
• Large delays between when research is done and when others get to benefit from it

WHAT IS F1000RESEARCH?
• Immediate publication
• Transparent refereeing
• No editorial bias
• Data included
• Indexed in PubMed
• Articles can be ‘living’

REFEREE SCORES
Approved
Approved with reservations
Not approved
Articles with sufficient positive reviews are indexed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and others.
Articles that haven’t yet reached this threshold can always be revised and re-reviewed.
or
Minimal requirements for indexing
REFEREE REPORTS ARE PUBLIC
Referee reports and author comments are
visible to anyone.
. . .
Referee names are visible
Referee reports are citable with a DOI.
View count shows how many people read the
referee report

DETAILED PROTOCOLS FOR REPRODUCIBILITY
Articles checked for adherence to ARRIVE guidelines
Authors encouraged to link to specific reagents used, as part of the Resource Identification Initiative (http://scicrunch.com/resources)
Links to protocol registration/publication encouraged
Code used to analyse the results is requested and archived through Github and Zenodo

FULL DATA INTEGRATION WITH RESEARCH ARTICLES
Datasets within article
are citable and
downloadable

FIGURES THAT DON’T EXIST
Simply data + code
Creates opportunities to
change the definition of
a figure, and ultimately the journal article

LIVING ARTICLES
F1000Research articles can always be updated, even after being
indexed.
• Each version is independently citable yet linked
• All versions indexed in PubMed, PubMed Central, etc (if pass review)
• ‘Track’ option to keep informed of new updates
• Saves wasted time/effort writing a fresh systematic review each time
• Ensures review remains up-to-date and better reflects pace of research
Authors amended their article in response to referee or
community feedback
Authors updated the article following minor developments
LIVING FIGURES

Other labs can replicate
the study, or contribute
their data to a meta-
analysis or disease model
- figure automatically updates.
Data updates time-
stamped.
New conclusions added
via versions.

SUMMARY
• The tools and technologies are there to bring scientific articles properly into the digital age
• Systematic reviews, being conducted regularly and combining data from numerous sources, can significantly benefit from moving away from being static objects
• Versioned articles, in-article data manipulation and living figures are already a reality
• We would love to work with this community to generate the first real ‘living’ systematic reviews.
