“Digital Disconnect”

“Fully half of all teens and 57% of teens who use the internet could be considered Content Creators. They have created a blog or webpage, posted original artwork, photography, stories or videos online or remixed online content into their own new creations.”

“Digital Disconnect”

• “While students relate examples of both engaging and poor instructional uses of the Internet assigned by their teachers, students say that the not-so-engaging uses are the more typical of their assignments.”

Page 7: Transitioning ICSD into a Web 2.0 World Phase I Planning Report

• “Many schools and teachers have not yet recognized - much less responded to - the new ways students communicate and access information over the Internet.”

“Digital Disconnect”

• School administrators - and not teachers -set the tone for Internet use at school.

12th Graders’ Views of School: 1983-2000

Is it any wonder that the National Center for Educational Statistics has found that the majority of students who graduate from American schools think that school is irrelevant?

Page 16: Transitioning ICSD into a Web 2.0 World Phase I Planning Report

Without Content Management• Contributor observes need

– Creates & revises content– Assembles & packages components– Sends Request and components

• Webmaster receives & prioritizes request– Question & clarification loops with Contributor– Makes changes– Notifies Contributor– Review & revision loops– Closes Request

Page 17: Transitioning ICSD into a Web 2.0 World Phase I Planning Report

With Content Management

• Contributor observes need– Logs into the CMS & creates/revises content– Reviews results & logs out

What is Web 2.0?

• Web-based applications (not PC-based)

• Users own and control the data

• Architecture of participation

• Rich, interactive, user-friendly interface

• Some social-networking aspects

Fundamental Questions

• What are the Board’s priorities and commitment to providing necessary resources required to enable a makeover of the Organization, Navigation, and Graphic Design of the District’s primary Website?

• Will the District adopt a system that enables dynamic content on the various Website Pages to be directly maintained by a broad set of authorized individuals?

• Will the District Website incorporate structured design and navigation templates?

Page 36: Transitioning ICSD into a Web 2.0 World Phase I Planning Report

Fundamental Questions

• If some or all of the first three elements are adopted, will the District just enable all schools to use this structure, or will such use be a mandate?

• To what degree will the District enable or encourage related entities to use this structure? (e.g., booster clubs, PTAs, etc.)

• What is the District’s policy with regard to Web 2.0 Resources? More specifically, what position will the Board take with regard to supporting Web Resources with essential functions that rely on end-user contributions and participation?
