TRANSLATION CLIENT GUIDANCE

How to Buy Translation and Select a Translation Partner for

Your Business

Part I

Page 2: Translation Client Guidance_Part I

START WITH WHY (SIMON SINEK)

Why do you need translation?

It seems like a simple question, yet its one that very few people can answer confidently.

Generally, the purpose of a translation should be to help you sell your product or service.

Equally, you may want your company to increase its global market share, enhance client satisfaction, or outperform your competitors.

Whatever the reason is, you should know your purpose of translation. Olha Bodna

PURPOSE OF TRANSLATION

The translation client should tell the translator what translation is needed for, i.e. its purpose.

In some instances, the client may ask for

partial or

summary translation or

translation may be needed for internal use just to understand the general idea (“for information”).

In other cases, the client may need a

polished translation “for publication”.Olha

Depending on the purpose of translation, where it will appear and what the translation client wants it to achieve, style, pronounceability, word choice, phrasing and sentence length will vary.

An experienced translator will ask the client for this information to produce a proper translation. This information is useful in helping the translator decide the appropriate manner in which to translate the text.

PURPOSE OF TRANSLATION

By specifying the purpose or intended use of the translation, the translation client will not only ensure the text accomplishes its task, but will also save time and money.

The client will also get better results by developing an ongoing relationship with a translator as he/she will understand the client's business philosophy better and produce more effective translations. Olha

Much like any other investment, translation must be approached with an eye to a company’s bottom line. Calculate how much income you receive from people who speak that language and purchase your company’s products and services.

EXPERT TRANSLATOROlha

ASK THE EXPERT

There is a translation ... and there is a translation done by an expert in the field you're working in. The translation client should find translators who position themselves as experts in particular field (for instance, law, IT, marketing, etc.). Expert translators refine their skills constantly as they deal with those texts in a narrow field on a daily basis. So, they increase their expertise on these topics.

The translation client should be prepared to pay more if they want professional translation done by an expert in their field, rather than a translator without specific specialization. You will receive experience and expertise. You will receive the added value.

It’s easy to think of translators as the nameless, faceless individuals on the other end of the computer screen. Your translators are truly an extension of your content creation team. Keep them informed on what to expect next as you develop a relationship with them over time.

Bring your translators to your company and show them your products, services, and business. Help them understand the details. If you go to this length, quality will improve significantly, and so will efficiency. Instead of having to ask clarification questions, translators will understand more about your business, improving communication all around.

APPOINT A DESIGNATED PERSON IN YOUR COMPANY

Answers to such questions are critical to the successful delivery of a quality translation to the target audience. While answering questions from the translator, the appointed person should take target audience of the translation into account as the end user of a translation (the target audience translation is intended for) is often not the person who orders the translation.

Olha Bodna

r

It's advisable for the translation client to appoint a person in the company who can answer questions from the translator before and during the translation process.
