Transmission line construction activities in your area

If you live near a transmission line under construction, you may notice helicopter activity and/or hear explosive sounds produced by implosive connectors.

Helicopter activityDuring structure assembly and stringing, you may notice a helicopter in the area and motorists may be delayed slightly in areas where the helicopter has to pass over a highway. Using helicopters during construction reduces the amount of traffic and corresponding environmental impacts along the transmission line right-of-way.

The majority of structures are assembled in designated yards off the transmission line right-of-way. Specialized helicopters are then used to move sections of the structures from the assembly yards to the designated locations. Depending on the structure type and location, the structure may be assembled at the structure siteand lifted by a crane.

Helicopters may also be used to transport people and equipment and string the transmission structures with conductor (wire).

Loud explosive soundsTo reduce sag in the lines caused by age and maintain our safety clearences on theline, we will be using implosive connectors to fuse portions of wire together. You may hear a few short, loud explosive sounds when the implosions occur.

HOW IMPLOSIVE CONNECTORS WORKTwo sleeves, a sleeve with a small, implosive charge and a sleeve made ofmetal, are wrapped around the two wire ends. The sleeves create an implosivecompression, seamlessly joining the two wire ends. The split second detonationcreates a flash and a loud explosive sound.

BENEFITS Compared to other methods, implosive connectors produce a smoother, strongerand more electrically efficient connection. The connectors also can significantlyreduce construction time, result in fewer environmental impacts and lowerproject costs.

The use of these connectors does not pose a safety risk to surroundingresidences. These connectors will only be used during daylight hours in certainlocations along the right-of-way. There should not be more than a few loudexplosive sounds on days when this work is scheduled to occur.

We contact emergency personnel (including police and fire departments) andmedia in the region to notify them of the implosions.

Thank you for your patience and support.
