INFORMATION AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Incorporate the attached revisions into the June 2010 Edition of Publication 72M.
These revisions include adding new standards for Type 31 Strong Post Guide Rail (RC-51M) and discontinuing the existing standards for Type 2 Strong Post Guide Rail (RC-52M).
These revised standard drawings should be adopted on all new and existing designs as soon as possible without affecting any letting schedules and in conjunction with the current Publication 408 Specifications. Regardless, revised standards must be used on projects let after December 31, 2017.

Major similarities between the Type 31 Strong Post Guide Rail system and the Type 2 Strong Post Guide Rail system are as follows: -Both systems are generic (i.e., are not proprietary and have no patented parts). -Both systems use a 12 gauge, W-beam rail element, steel posts, 8" offset blocks (routed wood, plastic, or composite), and similar post spacing. Major differences between the Type 31 Strong Post Guide Rail system and the Type 2 Strong Post Guide Rail system are as follows: -The height to the top of the W-beam rail element for Type 31 (31") is greater than for Type 2 (27 3/4"). -The Type 31 features rail splices at mid-span while the Type 2 has its splices at the post. A Type 31 Strong Post Guide rail system is to be provided that is compliant with the AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH), Test Level 3 (TL-3).
