Newsletter Introduction

Page 2

Hello and welcome to the first edition of the 2017 Ayrshire Cancer

Support Newsletter.

We weren’t sure how we would top the excitement of 2016 when we

opened our new centre in Kilmarnock, opened our new shop in Ayr

and, had a British Empire Medal awarded to one of our volunteers, but 2017 will be

another exciting year for us as we celebrate our 35th anniversary. After all these years we

are so thankful that we are still able to provide all of our services free of charge.

Very importantly, this is because of everyone who continues to kindly support us through

the generous contributions of your time, talents and fundraising donations – and we

really can’t thank you all enough.

We now have over 300 volunteers, which equates to 95% of our staffing numbers – this is

incredible! Our small number of dedicated staff are so well supported by our wonderful

volunteers. Our volunteer drivers regularly make up to 1000 patients transport journeys

per month, volunteer staff operate our 10 charity shops and our eBay shop, volunteers

help in our office, work in our new drop-in centre, collect, count, clean and deliver our

collecting cans, help at fundraising events, tidy up our gardens, do DIY projects in our

premises, and we even have a volunteer volunteer-coordinator! And the list goes on, so

you will see why we need even more volunteers.

Our services are all free and you will see throughout the Newsletter just how important

volunteers, supporters and charity partners are to us. If you would like more information

about volunteering, partnering with us or about becoming an ambassador for Ayrshire

Cancer Support to help raise awareness, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Thank you once again for your continuing and loyal support.

Happy reading!

Sandra McCall

We are absolutely delighted to share the fantastic news

with you that Ayrshire Cancer Support was awarded The Toast of Ayrshire Award at The Cream of Ayrshire

Awards ceremony.

This award is given by the judges in recognition of “an

outstanding organisation whose pioneering spirit and

involvement in the community contributes to Ayrshire

life whilst improving society and inspiring others” –

wow, quite an accolade!

This award was sponsored by Seamill Hydro and Gail

and Anne are pictured receiving the award at Seamill

Hydro. It is on display in

our new drop-in, alongside

our existing Spirit of the

Community Award.

We are delighted to be celebrating our 35th Anniversary

this year. In 1982 a handful of kind individuals formed a

group called The Elephant Trust; their mission was to take cancer patients for

treatment to Glasgow. Now, in 2017, we have over 300 dedicated volunteers, 10 charity

shops and two busy Centres. We changed our name to Ayrshire Cancer Support in order

to be easily identifiable for those who need us. We are here to help cancer patients and

their families throughout Ayrshire. Please join us in our celebratory fundraising events

this year to help us pay for the services we provide free of charge for cancer patients

and their loved ones throughout Ayrshire.

ACS Ambassador

We are very proud to introduce, Pauline Campbell one of our

wonderful Ambassadors who started fundraising and awareness

raising way back in 1994 and has so far raised well over a

whopping £200,000. Pauline recently told us that the reason

she started fundraising for us was because of the practical day

to day support we provide for patients, and family

members “it is like a lifeline to people”. There is

no long term goal, Pauline expressed that

fundraising is like breathing to her, there isn't any

other way. It was nice to hear Pauline reminisce

about her memories over the years particularly

with her two boys taking part in her many

fundraising activities, her youngest was never

seen without his collecting can in his pushchair.

Another favourite memory is pictured to the

right…

Pauline has so much enthusiasm and sees herself as the driver—who

would like to thank her passengers out there who have donated funds

and attended many events over the years. Pauline expresses her thanks to her partner

and her two boys and also to the office staff who always supported her and made her

feel appreciated. In particular, Pauline would like to thank Janie who answered

Pauline’s first phone call, Janie made Pauline feel at ease and that she was on her level.

Look out in our next newsletter for Ambassador Number 2 Norman Rennie

Can you spare a helping hand???

If you could help Pauline out at her next fundraiser in March, when she will be

holding a Mothers Day Bingo, please contact us on 01563 538008 for all the latest

information on this event.

Tear off and return or call Jim Montgomery on 01563 538008

Please send me a volunteer application form as I would like to volunteer some of my time to help Ayr-

shire Cancer Support to help Ayrshire cancer patients and their families.

Fare Well

Time to say Goodbye to our old timer!!!

It all started 28 years ago when my mother was diagnosed with cancer;

sadly she died not long after diagnosis. With time now on my hands I

volunteered for ACS. At first I would sit with patients who had no

relatives to care for them and, secondly, I would visit patients who were

in Belvidere Hospital as in those days patients were admitted on the

Monday and got home on the Friday and were so appreciative of

someone to talk to during the week. I then decided that my role in life

was to help cancer patients and their carers as much as I could.

My next task was to enrol in a counselling course and low and behold I

passed with flying colours (much to my surprise). I found myself

coming in more and more to the office and watching the ladies doing

the transport and thinking to myself “I can do that” so when the ladies

left due to ill health I took on the role as transport co-ordinator which

was a great challenge, and I loved it. I was in my element talking to the

patients, trying to sort out any problems that they may have and to

ease their cancer journey.

Next in line was fundraising and what a journey that was, we were given free places on a zip

slide across the Clyde and I thought “I can do that” so on the day I duly appeared at the

Finnieston Crane in Glasgow and proceeded to climb the stairs up to the top of the crane.

When I reached the top I nearly died when I saw how high up we were but, quaking in my

shoes, I climbed onto the ledge but then said to the man who was guiding us “MISTER, I

CAN’T DO THIS!” So what did he do? He pushed me off the ledge and shouted go girl go. I

was never so glad to feel the earth under my feet.

My next venture was to be the Edinburgh 13 mile marathon, me being me decided “I can do

that” so once again I volunteered. I can tell you all that I moaned the full 13 miles my feet

were bleeding, my legs were like jelly and I kept thinking I must be near the end when I

turned a corner and there was a poster saying you have now completed 3 miles and I

thought to myself that can’t be right but it was, there were people passing me in

wheelchairs and even a man with one leg was faster than me! My fundraising ventures are

too numerous to mention but I gladly participated in all these so that I could raise money to

help cancer patients and their carers. Someday I might write a book but I can assure you all

it will be a comedy!

As the years quickly rolled by I took on the job as Manager of the office and was once again

in my element as I love new challenges.

Page 6

Page 7: Transport Therapies Counselling - Ayrshire Cancer Support · Transport Therapies Counselling ... Corporate Social Responsibility Firm of the Year, ... involvement in the community

Fare Well

My role included accounting, transport, shops and

fundraising—which I loved. We then received a

tremendous legacy from a grateful patient’s wife which

enabled me to see my dream of a new centre for cancer

patients and their carers. That dream has now come true

and the centre is everything that I could have wished for

and more. I urge all of our patients and carers to come and

see this magnificent achievement in Kilmarnock for

themselves.

Now the sad part is, it’s time for me to have a well-earned rest after all these years. It

has been my privilege to serve the people of Ayrshire who were facing difficulties, and

I take my hat off to our dedicated team of volunteer drivers who in all weathers

manage to get their patients to hospital no matter what; I will miss them all as they

have been with the group for many years and it has been my pleasure to have known

them. The same goes for the volunteers in our 10 charity shops; without them we

would be unable to continue the free support we provide and I thank them for all the

support they have shown me and for their kindness and dedication. I have made many

friends; had some great times. I wish the charity every success in the future and will

always be there to lend a helping hand when needed.

Take care and God bless, Janie

Janie has been contemplating retirement for a little while now (“I’m a pensioner you

know” being a favourite saying!) and it was with a heavy heart Janie made the decision

to retire at the end of March this year. Janie has worked for Ayrshire Cancer Support for

almost 25 years as an employee and for a few years before that as a valued volunteer.

This has been a huge decision for Janie which she has thought long and hard about –

Janie knows everyone and everyone knows Janie! But I’m sure you will agree that after

this length of service she has well and truly earned her retirement.

Janie has seen ACS grow from a small charity into the well respected and well used

organisation that we have today. It was important to Janie to move into the new

centre in Kilmarnock before she retired. Most of us don’t even know Mrs Keddie who

left the legacy that allowed us to buy Dundonald Road but Janie was instrumental in

keeping the relationship with Mrs Keddie alive after her husband had died. Without

that we might never have received such a large part of her estate, so you could say we

might not even have our new centre were it not for Janie.

On behalf of all at ACS, we will miss you, we wish you a wonderful retirement and we

look forward to seeing you again when you pop in!

With special thanks and very best wishes, Sandra

Client Services

Page 8

Meet our Lead Counsellor

Hi, my name is Anna Griffin; I am the Lead Counsellor with Ayrshire

Cancer Support and am pleased to say I have been with the charity

for 10 years.

As a counsellor I offer a safe, confidential space to my client to talk

about what matters to them.

ACS clients can expect to be supported by a professional counsellor

who is a member of a governing body. Each session will be around

50-60mins and will be offered in a confidential environment. Often, ACS clients may

feel particularly vulnerable and may be experiencing loss of meaning and purpose in

their lives. ACS clients can therefore expect to work with counsellors who have a good

understanding of the impact a cancer diagnosis can have on, not only the cancer

patient, but also their family and friends.

One of the most important qualities of a counsellor, for me, is authenticity.

Individuals experiencing the impact of cancer in their lives need to know that they can

be ‘real’ with someone. It’s not easy to speak openly to family members about how

cancer has affected you and your family – this relationship may be too close

emotionally.

Some people may arrive at the first counselling session feeling fearful, uncertain and

vulnerable and leave, when ready, hopefully feeling empowered, changed by the

process and more confident in their ability to make ongoing decisions/choices in life.

Look out in our next newsletter for future interviews!

Due to the increased use of our services we have simplified the referral process to

allow quick and easy access to specifically chosen services i.e. counselling service,

complementary service, group support, self-management programmes, etc.

Please pop in to either of our centres for a cuppa and

chat to find out more about our services for cancer

patients and their loved one.

ACS provide mixed groups at both Kilmarnock and Ayr Centres. The groups provide a

safe and supportive space to share experiences, express feelings, and explore new

ways of coping and living with cancer. The groups are for anyone at any stage of

cancer treatment.

We are keen to hear from families and/or carers with regard to developing a time

-set carers group. It is important to empower families and carers affected by

cancer to manage their own situations through information and support.

We are also looking to develop other new programmes such as relaxation classes,

reiki training and chair yoga.

Or would you like to enjoy some Music and Movement to help with relaxation?

Can you offer some of your time for a new drop in facility in our Ayr Centre?

Volunteers

Page 12

Exactly 10 years ago I had a friend with cancer who used the

service provided by ACS. Prior to her telling me about this, I

had no knowledge of the service and facilities offered by ACS

but I was retired and looking for something useful, and

personally fulfilling, to do.

The “chat” with Janie followed, and I agreed to start the

process of becoming a volunteer driver.

Quickly some things became evident –

Driving patients to hospital is, first of all, of huge benefit to patients; it is very fulfilling to

see the contribution to patient well-being, comfort and treatment made because of patient

transport. There is great joy in taking a patient home who has finished treatment and even

more joy when hearing later that the cancer has been beaten and, when treatment has not

been successful, you know with certainty that you have made someone’s life easier and

their problems easier to bear.

On a selfish note, volunteer driving fits easily into my schedules. When I am free to drive I

do it; when I have other calls on my time (holidays, golf, decorating, etc.) I notify the office

that I am not available—this fits in well with other commitments.

There is a considerable camaraderie amongst all the volunteer drivers, and the patients! The

car at times can be filled with humour and laughter, as well as the quieter times, which are

often returning from hospital after radiotherapy/chemotherapy.

Some memories of volunteer driving can be quite sad obviously but many are happy or humorous. I remember in particular taking Jimmy home to New Cumnock years ago. His throat cancer caused him to be fed by a tube through his belly button. His only complaint was that he could not taste the whiskey he poured directly into his stomach!

My time as a volunteer has been enhanced by meeting all kinds of people from all

backgrounds, all facing a difficult time with courage and calmness. Every time I return from

a hospital run, my certainty is that I have helped patients to cope with this difficult time.

Through it, I have made new friends and found a real purpose in my life again.

In addition to driving, I find myself enjoying other tasks when I have time – collecting ACS

charity cans from shops, bars etc. (and then my wife counts them in the office!) helping on

charity runs, bag packing, supporting the admin staff when needed and even telephone

answering at times. Voluntary work for ACS is very varied, never onerous, always backed by

friendly full time staff, and never short of a cup of coffee or a supportive professional.

Would you like to join our team of Volunteer Drivers? Either call 01563 538008 for more info

or complete the tear off slip in this newsletter and return it to :

5 Dundonald Road, Kilmarnock KA1 1EQ.

Could you also be a star ?

A special thank you goes to Molly, her daughter Margaret & son Jim for all their

volunteering hard work and dedication—it’s a family thing!

Can you support our charity shops?

Everyone in the charity retail sector knows that our shops are much more than

simply places to raise money. We provide a huge pool of volunteering

opportunities, bring footfall into the town centres, and reuse or recycle tonnes of

materials which would otherwise find their way into landfill.

Please consider volunteering, donating goods and / or shopping with us to help us

to help others.

And speaking of the retail sector...

Huge thank you for the grant received from the Tesco Bags of Help Initiative, which

is supported from the 5p carrier bag levy. This will be used for the groundworks at
