A NEW study conducted bywww.bonvoyage.co.uk hasrevealed that the cost of theaverage cruise has decreasedby around 22% in the past fiveyears. Factors contributing tothis include more onboardspending opportunities, meaning cruise operators canjustify lower prices ifpassengers will spend moreon the ship, as well as a surgein last minute deals andbookings on many cruises.

Booking a cruise istraditionally something most

people expect to be fairlyexpensive, but new researchhas shown that prices for thistype of holiday are generallydecreasing; making a cruisea more obtainable trip formany.

The company gatheredinformation by taking intoaccount site statistics fromthe past three years, as wellas results from a poll of1,274 individuals who had allbeen on a cruise five yearsago and had booked a cruiseeither for this year or in 2014.

On average, when takinginto account the cruiseprices of those that hadtravelled five years ago andthose that had booked acruise for this year or 2014,this data revealed that theprice of a cruise hasdecreased by around 22%since 2008. The study resultsrevealed that the averagecost of a cruise amongstthose respondents that hadbeen away five years agowas ‘£1,600’ per person, whereas the average cost

amongst those planning tocruise this year or in 2014,based on their bookings, was22% lower at ‘£1,248’ perperson.

Furthermore, 38% ofrespondents commentedthat, despite the lower costsand potential onboard cuts, they had noticedimprovements in services oncruises in the past five yearsincluding food andentertainment quality (31%),level of service (22%) andquality of staff (19%).

How heartening to write these words with this countryexperiencing something of a feel-good factor! Afterthe excitement in 2012 of the Queen’s Jubilee

celebrations followed by the Olympics and Paralympics, many felt that 2013 would be an anti-climax. Far from it! Weall enjoyed the British and Irish Lions’ rugby playerswinning the series in Australia followed the same weekendby Andy Murray winning at Wimbledon: we had been waiting16 years for a Lions’ Win but 77 years for a Wimbledon win!We then celebrated Chris Froome following in the footstepsof Sir Bradley Wiggins by winning the Tour de France;having never won it at all, our cyclists are like buses andtwo come along at once! All that we now need is for ourcricketers to finish off Australia in The Ashes series and wecan celebrate a wonderful summer of sporting success, which has lifted the whole nation.

The Royal Family has contributed to our general moodof optimism with the birth of another future king: inthese androgynous times, how thoughtful that he waschristened George Alexander Louis so that we couldwelcome a GAL into the royal family at the same time!Even our economy is trying to make us feel better withthe news that we have seen two consecutive quarters ofgrowth to confound those who were predicting at onestage that we were going to enter a triple-dip recession.

The feel good factorSo have these positives had a similar knock-on effect onthe travel industry? All the signs over the first fewmonths of the year were positive with Elite TravelGroup’s members seeing encouraging levels of growth, which seems to have been the same for all independenttravel agents. Year-on-year growth slowed downhowever during the months of May and June whilst therecent spell of hot weather seems to have deterredsome travellers from venturing overseas.

This in turn led to the furore caused by SimonCalder’s remarks on the BBC that demand for foreigntravel was such that there were bargains galoreavailable for under £300! I have always considered himto be one of the more sensible television travel ‘experts’,doing his research before he speaks. Isn’t it sad howeverthat they cannot seem to find somebody who actuallyworks in the industry at the sharp end to whom they canturn for accurate assessments of exactly what is goingon?

When I was branch manager at Thomas Cook inBirmingham, I had television training by the travelpresenter Paul Carter in the event of BBC Midlandswishing to speak to a local travel agent. If herecognised that travel agents dealing every day withthe public really know best what is going on in relationto prices and availability, then why can’t modern TVbosses do likewise? At least our local BBC radiostation that covers Coventry and Warwickshire callsme regularly to answer questions as a local expertwhenever any travel-related issue comes along as theystill value the knowledge and expertise of independenttravel agents.

The need to regulateMost of you will be aware that the EU has made someamendments to the Package Travel Directive (PTD) toupdate it and to reflect the changes that have occurredin our industry since it was first issued in 1992. I amsure that alarm bells probably rang out as soon as youlearnt that Brussels is interfering yet again in anindustry that is seemingly already far too over-regulated! Travel agents just want to be able to sellholidays: the paperwork and regulations now seem tomake this simple task so difficult. For years now, theplans for full consumer financial protection havechanged so often that it has become almostimpossible to keep fully up-to-date in an industry thatis not a level playing field anyway. For how many moreyears are they going to try and keep amending theregulations until everybody is happy? It seems to havebeen going on for so long that all of us dreadattending travel conferences as the topic is bound torear its ugly head yet again. My final plea this month:can somebody please just sort it out once and for alland then leave it alone so that we can just get on withselling holidays?

Let travel agents do their job: Neil W Basnett, chief executive of Elite Travel Group, is perturbed bythe ever-changing industry regulations…
