VisitEngland suggests staycations are here to stay AT LAST week's ABTA The Travel Convention in Costa Navarino, VisitEngland reporteda strong start for 2015 with trip volumes and spend through the period of January toJune 2015 at an all-time high. According to the national tourist board for England, the total number of domestic
trips taken in England has increased by 14% year-on-year, with a 15% increase in thenumber of bed nights, while spend has grown by 13%. Heading a panel of industryrepresentatives, head of marketing partnerships at VisitEngland, Stuart Heath, said:“The trend to holiday at home is still popular and English tourism has a competitiveadvantage. We know that people have rediscovered the wonderful and varieddestinations on offer and that we cater really well to the rising trend of short breaksand activity holidays with visitor satisfaction levels remaining high.”Recently undergoing a governmental review, the organisation has cemented itself
in its leadership role and will now have access to a new product developmentchallenge fund, to enable it to work with destinations and partners and growEngland's tourism product. Also reported at the convention was the continuation of investment into the trade
with training course ‘England Expert’, which currently has more than 1,000 agentssigned up, plus more face-to-face training sessions than ever before.Key trends which were emphasised by the panel, which consisted of representatives
from Bourne Leisure, Hoseasons, Shearings and Superbreak, were the rise of muchearlier booking patterns, families looking for more immersive experiences with auniqueness to their trips and the great opportunity agents have to capitalise onclients who are actively seeking these breaks as a part of the mix of holidays enjoyedacross the year. Rounding off the discussion, Caroline Brown from Shearings, said: “It's not a
staycation it's a here to stay-cation in the way people are now booking their holidays -it's great to have domestic as a part of our overall tourism."ABTA Convention update - page 13

Celebrity Cruises boosts experiential-based ship visits for agentsMORE THAN 250 travel agents have so far this yeartaken a new experiential-based ship visit with CelebrityCruises as part of the line’s comprehensive agenttraining approach. The milestone follows the introduction of the new
activity in summer 2015 and the overhauled ship visitprogramme ensures that agents experience a taster oflife at sea on a cruise holiday. The new experiential ship visits focus on agents being
able to try out key features of ships as if they weresailing on-board. This includes being able to enjoydrinks in a bar of their choice, sample hot tubs andswimming pools, and tuck into a lunch that featuresdifferent courses prepared by the speciality restaurantson board. Agents will also enjoy viewings of staterooms across
different accommodation categories, with free time towander around the ship at their leisure after an officialwelcome and introduction from the sales team. Claire Stirrup, the line’s head of sales UK and Ireland,
said: “Ensuring that agents get under the skin of what aCelebrity Cruise is all about is really important. “Agents who have felt the grass of the Lawn Club
under their toes, sipped a martini from an ice-toppedbar and tasted the disco shrimp from Qsine understandour brand better and who to sell our cruise holidays to. “We only started the experiential agent ship visits
quite late into the 2015 season, and we are alreadyplanning to increase the number of agents who come onboard in 2016.” For more information visit www.cruisingpower.co.uk

Created by Ottawa Tourism and supported by a growing
community of partners, the ‘Ottawa 2017 Bureau ’ is taskedwith creating 12 months of immersive and moving experiencesthat will complement national celebrations and annual eventsand festivals. BEEN A few interesting things in the papersthis last week. I must admit it made me smilewhen I read ‘Migrants clamber into a lorry
with hungry polar bear’. The lorry was at Calais andfour migrants tried to get into it, but when Nissanthe polar bear growled, they changed their mind! Itwas nice to read that Nissan was on his way from aMoscow Zoo to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park inDoncaster which is not far from me (and I still havenot been to visit it!). I think the migrant situationaffects quite a lot of people - not just the lorrydrivers doing their jobs, but tourists getting delayedas well - not a good situation!
Then I read about the couple who were on theirway home from Madeira to BHX flying withMonarch, when the lady looked out of her windowand saw a missile laden warplane flying alongsideand close enough for her to see the pilot’s face!Apparently the Monarch flight had lost radio contactwith Air Traffic Controllers over France and it isstandard procedure when any loss of contactoccurs, military aircraft are launched. Luckilycontact was re-established and no harm done!
I love it when all the new brochures start comingout for next year, especially the specialist ones thatare a bit different. I think next year a lot of peoplewill want to try something different and we will seemore river cruises and rail holidays - anything thatis a bit different. I have been enjoying watchingChris Tarrant with his rail journeys - admittedlythey are not all suitable for the everyday touristsbut they look good anyway.

staffreviewTravel Bulletin’s Lauretta Wright took the family to tryout Westfield’s new family attraction – KidZania London.
Here’s what she (and the kids) thought…
First impressions ................................................................10/10KidZania London is a real-life introduction to the world of work forkids aged four–14 to play. Kids have four hours in which to workand earn ‘money’, which they can then spend in the city’s shops. There are more than 60 professions to choose from, such assurgeons and fire fighters to cabin crew and journalists. Onentering the city (which looks just like a mini town) kids will findthe streets lined with real-world establishments, including ahospital, police station, fire station, airline and theatre, eachoffering real-life role play adventures in a fun and safe environ-ment. It’s a great concept and very educational.
Comfort & quality ................................................................10/10Parents can sit in cafes while their children ‘work’, so it workswell for parents/carers. Alternatively, you can follow the kidsaround to see what jobs they choose. Everyone in the family wearsa wristband and there are points dotted around the city so that youcan locate the kids by scanning your band. You can even get holdof the city photographer and request pictures to be taken, whichcan later be ordered as coasters, keyrings, framed pictures etc.
Affordability ..........................................................................8/10Although prices are high, for four hours’ non-stop entertainmentin an educational environment, the attraction offers great valueand the kids are already insisting on a second visit. The onlynegative was that any money they earned wasn’t quite enough tospend on more than a small trinket in the shops, so we endedbringing most of it back home. They did however manage to buy(and make) themselves lunch at the Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

WHETHER YOU are a travel agent, a touroperator or really any company in thetravel industry, we are al l keen to do
our best , and conf irmation of that v iacustomer feedback or reviews is the greatestperformance measurement you can get.
So how do you gather customer feedback? Apaper or electronic quest ionnaire at the end of acustomer’s hol iday? Or a personal phone call toget i t straight from the horse’s mouth? I f yourcompany isn’t col lect ing detai led customerfeedback on the complet ion of your cl ients’hol idays, you need to think again. More andmore companies are using onl ine surveys;Google has one for free which providescumulat ive responses on an Excel spreadsheetand instant summaries. Mobile is obviouslywhere feedback is going but this may be a bitfurther down the l ine for some companies.
I ’d l ike to talk to al l the travel agents outthere. Your customers travel with well-known(hopefully AITO) tour operators. You issue yourfeedback survey to the customer after the tr ip,but do you send a copy of the survey results tothe tour operator you used for their informationas well? Many travel agents don’t do this as theyl ike to keep the tour operator at a nice distancefrom the customer – even though the touroperator has just carried the customers on theirhol iday and had every chance, i f they had wantedto, to drag them over to the dark side. The onlyt ime some tour operators get feedback fromtravel agents is when something goes wrong, which is a shame.
More and more travel review sites are poppingup and customers are being ent iced to leavereviews on these – which may be ‘neutralground’ for travel agents, but perhaps a bitexpensive. What i f travel agents directed theircustomers to the tour operator’s own website toleave reviews? The tour operator would thenreceive f irst hand feedback on their performanceand would be able to make any tweaks for futurecustomers.
I f the tour operator was aware the customer
had booked with a travel agent, they couldmention this in their response to the customer’sfeedback. This would reaff irm the agent’s role inthe hol iday and the tour operator’s partnershipwith the said agent. St i l l too r isky?
At AITO, we provide a middle ground to theabove. After customers complete the travelagents’ feedback survey, we are very happy foragents to direct their customers to leaveimpart ial feedback about the tour operatormember they travelled with on AITO.com. I fagents make sure customers mention theybooked with them in their comment, i t ’s clearhow the tour operator got the booking and thatal l part ies had a hand in making the hol idayspecial - winners al l round.
AITO.com’s Customer Reviews has been a realhit and the website is fast becoming ‘TheTripAdvisor for special interest travellers’ . Morethan 5,000 reviews have accumulated over a veryshort t ime and more reviews appear each day.
AITO Special ist Travel Agents have knowncustomers to v is i t AITO.com to check out a touroperator’s customer reviews and then go back totheir local agent to make the booking. Whatbetter peace of mind can you provide as a travelagent than to see a tour operator’s performanceon an impart ial associat ion website whichmonitors the qual i ty standards of i ts members?
I urge travel agents to work closely with touroperators to ensure both part ies benef i t fromcustomer advocacy and feedback. Not only wil l i tcement a very good business partnership, i t alsoguarantees qual i ty standards are met orcontrol led, thereby ensuring those loyalcustomers come back and book again and again.

ABTA’s trend survey reveals the value of agent expertise
InBrief ABU DHABI has been announced as the next destination to hostthe ABTA Convention, taking place from October 10-12, 2016 at theYas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel on Yas Island.
HOSEASONS HAS unveiled Wanderwood, a new specialist range ofwoodland-based lodge breaks for families and couples available tobook now for the start of next year across six UK locations. With astrong focus on experiencing the natural landscape, the lodges arealso pet-friendly, include Wi-Fi and all feature hot tubs.
 ANDY HARMER, director for CLIA UK & Ireland, announced a newgeneration for cruise in which the pace of change within the nextthree to five years will completely revolutionise the industry.Factors driving this include a change in consumer demand and achange in consumers themselves, particularly with a desire to bemore active and 'site-do' rather than 'site-see'; the dramaticchange of ship build materials allowing for more space for cruiselines to stamp their personality and alter the onboard experience;
and much more people experiencing cruises. Also noted was ashift in the language of cruise, enabling agents to sell much moreeffectively to clients and how much cruise continues to rely ontravel agent communities. Kathryn Beadle, the managing directorfor Uniworld, also encouraged agents to set their sights on rivercruising, commenting: “The demand and the opportunity is therefor the trade. There are lots of people who want to try river butthey just need to be encouraged to do it and that's where we needthe trade to help as I truly believe it’s about to take off.”
DEBBIE MARSHALL, managing director for Silver Travel Advisor, offered an insight into today’s 50-plus generation, their holidayhabits and how agents might take the opportunity to access thislucrative, but untapped, market. Top of the list for holidaypreferences are city breaks followed by cruising, but more thanhalf of those surveyed put the Northern Lights as number one ontheir bucket lists.
ABTA The Travel Convention took place last week in Costa Navarino, in the southwest region ofthe Peloponnese, Greece. Balancing a pageant of Greek culture and local history with businesssessions themed around ‘Risk and Resilience’, ADAM POTTER reports on the news and trends
that agents need to know…
THE LATEST research from the ABTAConsumer Trends survey suggeststhat holidaymakers are most likely touse a travel agent when bookinghigher value, last minute and longer holidays.
The survey conducted by marketresearch firm Arkenford, on behalf ofABTA, generated response from anationally representative sample ofmore than 2,000 consumers and theirholiday booking habits in the 12months to August 2015.
When asked which booking methodthey were most likely to use forvarious types of holiday, respondentsnamed travel agents as the mostpopular choice, over booking directlywith a tour operator, a holidaybooking website or directly withservice providers, in four out of thesix holiday categories.
These categories included seven-night plus holidays and last-minutebreaks each receiving 44% of the vote, trips to new destinations with 47%,and honeymoons receiving almost halfwith 49%. It was also suggested thatwith these kinds of trips, whichtypically involve larger sums of moneyand complexity, clients want the addedexperience, expertise and assistanceof a travel professional to make sure
the holiday goes smoothly and thattheir money is well spent.
However, when it comes to city anddomestic breaks holidaymakersappear more likely to book directlywith service providers.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said: “The findings suggest that wheretravel professionals really come intotheir own is by providing that personaltouch and insight. For example, ahoneymoon is a big investment, bothemotionally and financially, andpeople value that added assurance ofknowing things have been taken careof by a professional. It is encouragingto see holidaymakers recognising thisand continuing to seek that expertise, whether they find it online or on theHigh Street.”
Other key findings from ABTA’sHoliday Habits Report 2015 indicate apositive outlook for 2016 with 23% ofthe population expecting to spendmore on their holidays. However, despite an increased volume ofholidays booked by Brits, this is being driven by only three quarters of the population.
The report reveals that despite theaverage number of holidays taken perperson increasing from 3.0 to 3.2 fromlast year, the total number of people
taking a holiday fell from 80% to 77%in 2015. This decline is a continuationof a wider trend seen over the last fiveyears and the continued pressure onhousehold finances appears to be thereason behind the decrease inholidaymakers with the biggest cuts inholidays coming from those with thetightest budgets.
Meanwhile, city breaks haveincreased their lead over beachholidays as the most popular type ofholiday taken by consumers in the lastyear according to the survey results, especially with 25-34 year olds, 55-64year olds and families with school agechildren seeking cultural and learningopportunities. Families remain thecore supporters of the beach holiday, with six in ten of both those with youngchildren and those with school agechildren taking a beach break in 2015.
In destination news, ABTAmembers have reported goodnumbers for Spain, Portugal, Cyprusand Malta both for the summer of2015 and for forward bookings fornext year. Bookings to Cuba, CapeVerde, Kenya and Thailand arereported to be looking positive for2016 with a demand for Jamaica,Barbados and the UAE also strong forthis winter and next year.
