A delegation from New England, New York City, New York State, Philadelphia and Washington DC is in New Zealand today meeting trade and media. It includes Fred Dixon, ceo of NYC & Company, who is visiting for the first time in a sign of the growing importance of the market here. “We know Kiwis are intrepid travellers, they know the west coast pretty well already, we’re seeing a real movement towards the east,” he says. NYC itself saw 15% growth in Kiwi visitation last year, which ‘gave us lots of excitement and optimism about where the market can go’, says Dixon. The numbers are helped by ‘better flight routes than ever before’, which have prompted some ‘really great air- fares’.“That access puts us on par with any other destination in the world.” Destination DC boss Elliott Ferguson too is keen to promote his city as interest grows in the east coast. “After many years on the west coast, now it’s time to explore other areas,” he says. “We’re one of those cities that many people have heard of but very few have visited.” Ferguson’s key message for agents is to book clients for longer— most visitors add a half-day in DC to their NYC itinerary, and always wish they had more time, he says. New England appointed Canuckiwi to represent it in-market here earlier this year, and recently approved budget to work with wholesalers. Currently, it sees around 70,000 visitors from New Zealand and Australia annually, says executive director Lori Harnois. “Anecdotally we’re hearing positive remarks from our industry about the growth from the market too,” she says. He and his wife Gwenda operated the Harvey World Travel Greenwoods Corner shop until Feb 2015, be-fore joining Travel Managers as brokers. “He was a lovely man and one of the real gentlemen of our industry,” says Wallace.A service will be held from 1500 on Wed at the Hillsborough Bap-tist Church, 179 Hillsborough Rd.

New Zealanders are being advised to stay away from Turkey follow-ing an unsuccessful military coup attempt over the weekend, while those currently in the country are being urged to stay indoors. The Turkish government has ar-rested and detained around 6000 people in response to the failed at-tempt, which saw fighter jets flying over Ankara and shots fired, soldiers with tanks blocking entry to Istan-bul’s airport, and military trucks blocking two major bridges; while close to 300 people were killed and 1400 injured. The New Zealand Ministry of For-eign Affairs has increased its risk level for Turkey to high, and advises Kiwis in Turkey to stay indoors and avoid all unnecessary travel, stay away from military installations, ar-eas of police or military activity and any large gatherings; while advising against all tourist and other non-essential travel to the country due to the uncertain security situation.World Journeys has been in touch with all agents who have clients in Turkey, and established all are safe

and well, rearranging itineraries where necessary. It says it will con-tinue to monitor the situation going forward; whilst Innovative Travel, who had two clients booked to depart Istanbul from Sabiha Gokcen Airport on Sat night (local time), was able to reschedule the flights to depart from Ataturk Airport ahead of time. The Travel Corporation says it is ‘business as usual’ for all of its brands, and has issued travel updates on each of its websites for both agents and clients. Allianz says for those currently trav-elling, or yet to depart and who en-tered into a policy before 0600 16 Jul, it will assess all claims; however, it cannot pay any claim caused by or arising from the military action for policies entered after this time. Meanwhile, Korean Air will waive the reissue penalty for clients with tickets to Istanbul issued on/before 16 Jul for travel 16 Jul-15 Aug, when changing travel dates or when the portion is changed to the other KE on-line points in Europe. It will also waive the refund penalty for cancella-tions within this time frame. To keep an eye on the situation visit safetravel.govt.nz/turkey

Online Republic?A New Zealand-based travel website was recently acquired by Australia-based Webjet for $85 million . . . but it appears the industry knows very little about Online Republic. One would expect that a travel com-pany of that value would have been started by travel industry people, but it wasn’t. The founders were broth-ers, one of whom was an advertising agency executive. Only 10% of Online Republic’s business came from New Zealand, the balance coming from off-shore. An interesting article appeared in the NZ Herald, telling who was behind this amazing company.CLICK HERE to read the NZ Herald article.

HoT’s New Cruise BrandHouse of Travel has, over the weekend, launched an Australasian cruise OTA, Hoot Cruises, in a bid to ‘create transtasman opportunities to capture a growing market’. While Hoot Holidays has operated in Aus-tralia for a number of years as part of the HoT group, the brand says it was a natural progression to bring it to New Zealand as an online cruise specialist, following strong growth. “A stand-alone brand, Hoot Cruises is independent from the HoT brand,” says HoT’s Jeff Leckey. “We believe concentrating on different strategies for retail and online channels will grow our overall position in these markets, growing our relevance and competitiveness.” He adds that there are over 31,000 cruise deals avail-able on the Hoot Cruises website.
