Family vacations are no longer just for two-legged children.According to a study by AAA and Best WesternInternational, more than half of U.S. pet owners take

their cats and dogs with them when they travel.

If you’re looking to hit the road or fly the skies with yourcanine companion or feline friend, we’ve got tips to makethe trip as smooth as possible.

ROAD TRIPS WITH ROVER • Trial run. Before embarking on a long trip, take some

shorter drives to see how your pet responds. Does he get anxious? Car sick?

• Buckle up. About 30,000 accidents are caused each year by an unrestrained dog in the front seat, accordingto the AAA. Pets freely wandering the vehicle aren’t only a distraction to the driver, but they’re also more likely to be injured in the event of an accident. You can help ensure a safe trip by restraining your furry friend with a pet barrier, pet seat belt, pet car seat or travel crate.

• Keep heads and paws inside. Your dog may enjoy sticking his head out the window, but riding this way could cause ear damage or expose your pet to lung infections, according to the ASPCA.

• Prepare for the worst. Attach a second tag to your pet’s collar that includes the address and phonenumber of where you'll be staying during your trip. Also, bring your pet's medical records along in case of an emergency.

• Pit stops. The American Veterinary Medical Associationadvises pet owners to stop every two to three hours for your pet to use the bathroom and get some exercise.

• Hydrate. The ASPCA recommends keeping a gallon of cold water on hand to ensure your pet stayssufficiently hydrated during the trip.

• Don’t leave them alone. On an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked can reach 110 degrees in 10 minutes, which can be deadly. If you'll be visiting a destination where pets aren’t allowed, leave them at a pet-friendly hotel — or at home — instead of the car.

FLYING WITH FLUFFY • Fit to fly. If your pet is very young, very old or not in

good health, it's best to leave the critter at home. Also, some breeds don't travel well in cargo, such as snub-noseddogs like pugs, which are prone to breathing difficulties. Many major airlines no longer allow such breeds to fly in the cargo hold.

• Do your research. Regulations and fees vary dependingon airlines and whether your pet flies in the cabin or as checked baggage. Be sure to check an airline’s historyof flying animals. FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

Hooray!!! Dad is home!!!

He went for an operation and we all expected him tocome back home and for 2 days, all was well and thenan unexpected rush back to hospital for emergencysurgery. Then it seemed like forever; he was gone forthree weeks.

Normally it is Bandit who is the nervous one, butthen I got worried. Mom was upset about Dad andher beloved cat Daphne, who was diagnosed withFIP. Mom was trying to take care of Dad’s garden andall of us, including Beamer, my cat sister, who is diabetic. We also got left home a lot as Mom went totake care of Dad, and work. But then the good news,Dad was coming home. However, it was a sad daytoo, Mom brought Dad home and had to go check onDaphne. Bad news.

Daphne went to the other side of the rainbow bridgeto wait for us.

Mom is heartbroken, but we move on…

Dad was so glad to see us, there were tears in hiseyes. I don’t know what to do but lick his face. Heseems to be better every day.

It has been ruff, but Dad is going to be as good asnew! I will keep you posted.

And so it goes, till next month...

Hello Everyone!!

Yes, it is me, Snoopy. To say I am excited is to put it mildly. I finally got to go camping. We went to the sameplace as last year (town of Brush) for a campout with their club. The farmer, whose field is right next to wherewe park, was not cutting his field so there were hardly any birds to watch. Bummer. By the time this article isprinted I will have been to Yellowstone again where they have huge animals called buffalo. When a deer came byour motorhome one time when we were camping, I thought it was big but those buffalo looked just as big exceptthey were way across the road and I think that is a great place for them. It will be exciting to go back therebecause there are lots of animals I don’t usually get to see. I will tell you all about my trip next month.

This is an update on the little two/four legger. She is starting to stand by herself so maybe she really is a twolegger. They are still working with her because when she gets next to us (four-leggers) she grabs fistfuls of ourfur and then starts to pull. Hope she learns pretty soon as we want to like her, but pulling fur hurts! Mom saysshe will grow out of the fur pulling. We hope it is soon while we still have fur (just kidding).

I don’t know about you, but I am happy that the weather is finally feeling like summer. That means I have lots ofsunny warm spots to stretch out and get my “summer tan.” Well, cats can’t really get a tan because we have fur,but you know what I mean. It just feels good.

Well, guess that’s all for this month. Hope you are enjoying the weather too.

SPECIAL NEEDS ANIMAL OF THE MONTH

Greetings! My name is Bugle and I ama handsome Shar-Pei mix guy born in2011. I weigh about 45 pounds.

One of the first things you will noticeabout me is that I'm missing myeyes. MaxFund removed them due toglaucoma. This doesn’t slow me downone bit!

I’m still a goofy guy who loves to gofor walks and enjoys getting loved-onby people. I also love being outside andlying in the sun. I’ve done well withcalm dogs, but would need to meet anypotential fur-siblings before goinghome with you.

Due to my lack of sight, I'll need sometime to adjust to my new surroundings,so patience will be an import asset inmy forever home. Please look me upon the website and you can see howhandsome I am!

Dear MaxFund,

I acquired Bailey from the MaxFundabout three and a half weeks ago andhave fallen head over heals in love!!!!

Bailey enjoys our two to three walkseach day and thoroughly enjoys ourtime spent outdoors at parks. Heenjoys meeting other people but notsure about other dogs. We are workingon getting him acclimated to otherdogs. We will see!!!

Bailey is an extremely mellow dogand loves to sleep and lounge around, especially when watching TV. Whenlightening hits, Bailey scampers tomy closet and burrows under myclothes where he feels safe.

We continue to discover thingsabout each other and I am extremelygrateful to have Bailey in my life. Heenriches my life more than I canhave even imagined!!!

Once again a big shout-out to theMaxfund and ALL the amazing workyou do!!!!

Best to all,Kenny SmithSatisfied customerDog walking volunteerFoster parent to MaxFund dogs

Dear MaxFund,

Asha is doing great! She has adjustedwell to her new home and is sucha sweet dog. She had some stomachissues for awhile, which is probablyto be expected during that type oftransition, but we recently had a vetvisit and they gave her some antibioticswhich have seemed to clear up herissues. She is a delight and everyoneshe meets falls instantly in love with her.

Stacy

Dear MaxFund,

I’ve been meaning to send an updatebut I keep forgetting. Puppy parent-hood takes up a lot of time! Radar(I've shortened it to Ray) is doingwell. He loves running around withhis toys in his mouth, digging, meeting new people, and gets veryoverwhelmed at dog parks! He alsohates baths. Ray is super snugglywhen he’s not playing and he definitelyhas a sense of humor. I crack upevery day with him. I am starting tothink he is a jack russell terrier/chihuahua mix instead of a chiweenie. He's got quite the jump and is full ofenergy! I started a little instagramaccount for him if you ever want tocheck up on how he’s doing: rayisbae10

We've been having a great timetogether, and getting to know himhas been so much fun. It’s definitelybeen a learning experience and a bitchallenging at times, but every timeI see his little face, I’m so happy Iadopted him.

Traveling with Pets continued from page 1

• Pet papers. If you’re traveling outside the country, find out what vaccinations your pet will need and if quarantine is required. Consult this database of animal import requirements for more information.

• Prepare the carrier. Purchase a kennel that has room for your pet to turn around and standwithout hitting its head. If your pet hasn’t traveled before, spend some time getting the animal used to being in the carrier. Airlines have different crate dimension requirements, but the USDA requires the following: food and water dishes, “Live Animal” stickers, upright arrows and bedding.

• ID tags. Attach contact information to both your pet’s collar and its carrier.

• Exercise. Before the flight, play with your cat or take your dog for a walk. The more tired your pet is, the more likely it is to sleep during the trip.

• Relax. Cesar Millan recommends using lavender oil as an “association scent” to help your pet relax while flying. In the weeks before the flight, he suggests putting a drop of oil on your hands at feeding times or before walks. Once onboard, “the positive association will allow him to calm down and remain relaxed.”

OTHER PET TRAVEL TIPS • Consult your veterinarian before embarking on a

trip, especially if your pet hasn't traveled before or if you have any health concerns.

• Keep a familiar blanket or toy with your pet to help it feel more comfortable during the trip.

• If your pet gets nervous when traveling, consider getting a Thundershirt. These snug-fitting shirts target pressure points, and veterinarians often recommend this drug-free option for animals that suffer from anxiety.

• Book pet-friendly hotels, and look for destinations where you’re allowed to take your canine companionor feline friend.GoPetFriendly.com offers a wealth ofinformation onthese topics andcan even help youplan your road trip.

BUSTER BROWN

Calling all Boxer lovers!!! Buster Brown is a very handsome boxer mix who was born in 2014.This young guy is not only good-looking but is a fun-lovingdog who will bring laughter and love into your home.

Buster Brown is loved by many of the volunteers, andhe has been described by them as a “total sweetheart.”Buster Brown can be a bit shy with strangers, but oncehe knows you, he is sweet as can be. I know that healways greets us politely and with a happy look whilehe is out on his walks.

Buster Brown will do best in a home with an experiencedowner who will work with him on his training. He canbecome protective of his humans and his home, so hewill need you to work with him on this behavior sothat he can reach his full potential as a very awesomedog. Buster Brown will also do best in a home withoutkids, and while he does like to play with other dogs, heshould be the only fur child in the household.

Buster Brown is very athletic, and will thrive in ahome that provides him with daily physical activity. He loves his walks, and is an incredibly polite walkeron his leash. He will also make a great running orhiking partner.

MALCOLM

Malcolm is made up of equal parts of joy and love. Heis a miniature poodle mix who was born in 2011.Malcolm was relinquished by his owners when he lostsome of the use of his back legs. However, Malcolm is

You should seeMalcolm’s beautiful brown button eyes light up whenhe knows it is time for a walk, and his tail never stopswagging during the walk.

Malcolm gets along great with other small dogs. Infact, we recently took him on a walk with two otherdogs, and he loved being out with them, and being partof the group!

Malcolm is a loving, patient, generous soul who lovesto be petted and pampered, and he is also quite a goodkisser. Coming to a new home is this wonderful boy’sdream.
