Beaver Hills Moraine The Beaver Hills Moraine is a natural preservation area that lies east of Sherwood Park, a geomorphological feature that encompasses 1572 km2 (607 mi2) and spans across five counties: Strathcona, Leduc, Beaver, Lamont, and Camrose. The moraine forms a patchwork of areas, many of which support wetlands and small lakes. There are over 35 separate lakes and close to 700 campsites

The conserved sections of land not only preserve a cultural and historic element to the region but enhance a critical habitat link connecting the north and south portions of the Beaver Hills that will ultimately benefit wildlife movement through the core federal and provincial protected areas. Further details about the moraine can be found at: www.beaverhills.ca

Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area The 97 square kilometre area contains forests, pastures and wet lands in glacial moraine (knob and kettle) terrain. It is a multiple use area that supports a variety of activities including agriculture, wildlife management, natural gas extraction and outdoor recreation. Winter recreational opportunities include horseback riding, cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking and snowmobiling. This area is the site of the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival, held each year in February. The “Birkie” ski festival is the largest and friendliest classic-style ski festival in Canada. With 170 kilometres of trails, this recreation area is the destination of choice for those who wish to experience hiking, mountain biking, equestrian, snowshoeing and dog sledding!
