Read the article and answer the questions.

THE REAL SWEENEY

In 1919, in London, twelve police officers got together to form what is now called The Flying Squad. They decided that, instead of investigating crimes after they had happened, they would stop the criminals while they were committing them. (1) C. THE SQUAD SOON INCREASED IN SIZE . There were 40 officers the following year and more the year after. They became the first police force to use cars and they got their name because they were able to move quickly round London.

In 1956, they made 1,000 arrests in a year! From 1978 until 1981, they changed their name to the Central Robbery Squad but then went back to being the Flying Squad, because it was a much more popular name with police officers and the public. (2) A. MANY PEOPLE, THOUGH, CALL THEM SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. In the 1970s there was a popular TV series about the Flying Squad. The name of the series was The Sweeney. It was such a popular show that many people still call the real Flying Squad ‘The Sweeney’.

Although the characters and events shown in the TV series weren’t true, the way the police worked on TV was very similar to how they work in real life. As they get information about crimes before they happen, they are often at the scene when the crime is being committed. (3) B. THIS WAY OF WORKING IS OBVIOUSLY MORE DANGEROUS THAN NORMAL POLICE WORK. The criminals are often carrying guns and are ready to fight back.

One of the Squad’s most famous successes came in the year 2000. A huge diamond, the Millennium Star, worth about £200 million, was in London at the Millennium Dome. The police heard that a gang of robbers planned to steal the diamond and escape along the River Thames by boat. When the robbers arrived, two hundred police officers were waiting for them. Some were hiding, others were dressed as cleaners and other workers. (4) F. TWENTY MORE WERE IN BOATS ON THE RIVER . The police had already moved the diamond and put a glass copy in its place. Four men broke into the Dome carrying guns. They were soon arrested and another man was stopped on the river. Amazingly, no-one was hurt. The men were sentenced to between 4 and 18 years in prison.

Some people think it’s wrong that the Flying Squad have close contacts with criminals, but they say that this is the only way they can get information on what crimes are going to be committed. As one officer said: “If we didn’t get information from criminals, where would we get it from?”

TASK 1: Fill in the blanks (1)-(4) with the sentences (A-B) given below. There are 2 extra sentences!

A. Many people, though, call them something completely different.B. This way of working is obviously more dangerous than normal police work.C. The Squad soon increased in size. D. This was one of their first big arrests.E. They weren’t always so successful.F. Twenty more were in boats on the river.

TASK 2: Mark the sentences TRUE, FALSE or NOT MENTIONED.

1. NOT MENTIONED The Flying Squad was formed because other police forces were not effective.

2. TRUE The word ‘flying’ was used because they could travel quickly.

3. FALSE The Central Robbery Squad and The Flying Squad were two different police forces.

4. NOT MENTIONED The makers of the TV series were helped by the real Flying Squad.

5. TRUE When the thieves arrived at the Millennium Dome, the diamond wasn’t there.

1 One of the best female athletes in the world is Canadian Chantal Petitclerc. She holds world records and has won many gold medals. Chantal has had amazing success although she cannot walk.

2 Chantal is a wheelchair racing specialist. When she was 13 years old, she lost the use of both legs in an accident. Chantal was not very athletic as a child. However, after her accident she decided to find a physical activity to stay in shape, so she took up swimming. She started wheelchair racing in 1987. In her first wheelchair race, at the age of 18, she finished last. This did not stop her. Instead, Chantal fell in love with the

sport and started training.

3 Five years later, Chantal took part in the Paralympic Games. In the Paralympics, the best disabled athletes around the world compete against each other. Like the Olympics, the Games take place every four years. At her first Paralympics, in Spain, Chantal won two bronze medals. She has also taken part in the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Paralympic Games. So far, Chantal has won 11 Paralympic medals and set three world records.

4 Chantal's achievements have made her famous in Canada. In 2004, a Canadian magazine named her "Canadian of the Year." Despite her fame and success, Chantal seems to have a very normal life. She is serious about training, but she doesn't let it take over her life. She never trains after six o'clock at night. Her favorite activities include reading and watching movies. She also likes having quiet dinners with friends. She lives in an apartment in Montreal, Canada, with her boyfriend. She says they are both very independent. They share household chores, like cooking, fifty-fifty. She says she learned most household jobs in a wheelchair. She can't even imagine what it's like to take out the trash or to go shopping standing up.

5 Chantal was at the University of Alberta when she first decided to start training for the Paralympics. She was studying for a history degree. She wanted to finish her studies, but she had to make a choice between staying at the university and training for the Paralympics. Chantal is happy with her choice, but she would like to finish her degree some day. Given what she has done with her life so far, it should be easy for her to take on another challenge.
