Chapter 24

There are many reasons why more and more people aretravelling abroad for their holidays.

• Limited recreation space and choicein Hong Kong

Although there are many opportunities for recreationalactivities in Hong Kong, its small and hilly landscapelimits space and choice for the large population. All theattractive spots offering recreation are overcrowdedduring holidays (Figure 24.4).

• Higher living standards

The living standards of Hong Kong people have improvedas the economy has grown. More people can afford theexpense of foreign travel.

• People have more holidays

People have more leisure time as there are more holidaysso they can travel abroad for longer periods.

• Easy access to travel information

Mass media provide a lot of travel information about placesof interest around the world. Nowadays, people can alsoget travel information from the Internet. (b) Park

• Improved transport

With improved transport due to technological advances,travellers can reach their destinations in a shorter time ata lower cost. Travelling abroad is easy nowadays (Figure24.6).

Hong Kong people usually travel abroad during long publicholidays such as at Christmas, Easter and Lunar New Year.Other popular times are during school holidays whenfamilies with children at school can travel abroad. Theseperiods are the peak seasons for travel and the airport andrailway terminus are always crowded during these times(Figure 24.10).
