Galungan & KuninganOne of Bali’s major festivals celebrates the return of Balinese gods and ancestors to Bali.

For ten days, Balinese families will entertain and welcome with prayers and offerings, along with ceremonies to cleanse and bal-ance the inner and outer energy of the island. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The origin of Galungan is a mystery, but essentially it is believed to be the begin-ning of the week in which the gods and an-cestors descend to earth, and good triumphs over evil.

The holiday is celebrated by the fitting of ‘Pen-jor’, tall bamboo poles beautifully decorated on the right side of every house entrance. People are attired in their finest clothes and jewels on this day. After the Galungan Festival called Kuningan, signifying the closing of the Galungan Cerremony. On this day special of-ferings made of yellow rice and special dishes are offered every family compound and tem-ple looks amazing with ornaments. This is believed to be the ascendance day - when ancestral holy spirits and deities return to heaven. Major festivals celebrates will return every 210 days

ARTISTRY from the traditional Balinese is varied and also very diverse. In Jembrana (West Bali) they have many examples of tra-ditional art among which is Jegog (a beauti-ful form of traditional dance) and Makepung (the art of buffalo racing). Why might you ask is Makepung a traditional art form? Well be-cause of its highly decorated, colourful buffa-lo and jockeys plus its traditional significance to mark the end of the rice harvest.

Another form of buffalo racing in Jembra-na is Makepung Lampit where the buffalo race is held in wet muddy rice fields. Unlike Makepung which celebrates the end of the rice harvest Makepung Lampit is to mark the start of the rice season – the planting of the rice. So prior to the planting of the rice they race the buffalo in the wet muddy fields. The Lampit is a farming tool used to level the rice field and the buffalo race with the Lampit at-tached.

On Sunday (26/4/2015), the Makepung Lampit race was held at Peh’s Subak rice field acreage in Jembrana, Kaliakah Village, in the district of Negara. Dozens of pairs of buffalo with their head crown brightly deco-rated raced the circuit which is 200 meters

long. Like traditional horse racing a special whip is used to encourage the buffalo to gallop as fast as the can. After all this is a race. You can imagine the excitement and thrill of this event with the jockey and brightly decorated buffalo racing in wet muddy rice fields and the mud flying everywhere. They end up covered in wet mud which also includes the spectators becoming wet and muddy.

This interesting and unique art form draws doz-ens of locals and tourist spectators plus many photographers. This event is such a great spectacle to capture through the lenses of a camera or video. Gede Sudaya from traveling

BALI media took this opportunity to capture this amazing event alongside of some famous photog-raphers Deniek G Sukarya and Mario Blanco.

After the race one jockey expressed that he felt very happy as he was not just there to be a cham-pion and win the race but also to maintain the tra-dition of Makepung Lampit that inspires a spirit of mutual cooperation amongst Jembrana farmers and the workers of the rice fields.

A rich local tradition that is well worth attending if you just happen to be visiting Bali when the Makepung Lampit race is taking place, usually just twice a year.

GALUNGAN & KUNINGANBali’s Important Cerremony

“Nearly all festivals in Bali are related to the Balinese Pawukon-Calender which is different to other cal-endarsby containing only 210 days. Most of the Balinese Festivals and Holidays depending on the Pawukon Calender and moon phases are published by the Bali Government Tourism Office

GALUNGANThis important Hindu ceremony is celebrated every 210 days according to the Pawukon Calendar. Galungan lasts for ten days. During this period, the Balinese Gods visit the island. Before this big holiday, the island becomes very busy. The women create beautiful woven ‘banten’ which are offerings made from young coconuts. The men decorate bamboo poles, known as penjors, which adorn the streets of every Balinese village.Sometimes, the local people cook a whole pig and give it to families. In every vil-lage, the men cook lawar, a delicious food made from vegetables, spices, and pork. The day after Galun-gan, called Manis Galungan, is considered as qual-ity time for family gatherings. Many Balinese people take this day off in order to visit their extended family. The ten days of Galungan celebrations give visitors an authentic idea of what religion means to Balinese people. It is a great time to visit Bali. .

KUNINGANKuningan DayBalinese Hindus believe that ten days after Galungan Day theirancestors return to paradise after dwelling on earth for ten days. The Balinese

thank the gods for their mercy and often celebratethis holiday by visiting each other and having fun. The most elaborateKuningan ceremonies are at Sakenan Temple on SeraganIsland, also known as Turtle Island.

The road form Denpasar to Ubud can be described very easily with four words, “The Road of Art “.

On the trip from Denpasar to ubud, about 26 kil-meters, you will see a big selection of traditional arts and crafts. Many of the crafts people work outside and invite visitors to watch their sakillful hands as they carefull make beautiful creations. Stonemasons, silversmiths, goldsmiths, puppet-eers, woodcarvers, painters and dancers and dancers can all be seen on this almost magical trip through an artistic dream world.

Batubulan, the vilage of stonemasons, providesan interesting first stop on your trip. Figures carved from stone can be seen averywhere on the road. The stone carvings, all of highest quality, require-nastrong hand to carve images out of a block of stIn Celuk, the work of the goldsmith and silver smiths is outstanding. In some shops, you can watch the designers working on their artistic crea-tions. Many of their ancestors were once commis-sioned to work for Balinese Royalty.

A stop n the art market in Sukawati is a must .Among many other fine arts nd crafts, this art market features a selection of traditional Balinese temple umbrellas known as “Payung”. The mar-ket also has fine hand carved detailed puppets, known as a “Wayang”. The carefully carved de-tailed puppets are made from buffalo leather. Some of the more exclusive puppets are usually owned by the local dalang dalang, or puppet mas-ter master. Sukawati offers a variety of souvenir that make perfect gifts to take home to a friend or of yourself. Next on the road is Mas, the village of woodcarvers. Status of Gods or more playful im-ages of big eyed frogs highly filigree carved doors or just simple window frames are all lined up for the visitors to see. For the master woodcarvers in Mas nothing seems impossible to carve. The villages of Pengosekan dan Peliatan are both nter-esting places to see Bainese paintings.

UBUD

In Pengosekan, the Community of Young Artists, a group founded in 1969 helps poor families to give their children a good art education. When they become artists, they make money to help their families.

Every kind of art and craft can be found in Ubud at the tradisional markets and in shops on the Mon-key Forest Road. If you wish to create your own silver pendant or ring, there are shops with ex-perts that will teach you how to create your unique piece of jewelry.During your trip, a must see is Bali’s famous Barong Dance in Batubulan. If you wish to get back to nature, a stop at the Bali Bird Park in Sin-gapadu is a beautiful attraction; it is especially nice for children.

The following brief explanation of three main Balinese Dances should help to understand the meaning of Legong, Barong, and Kecak Dances.

Balinese Dancean important part of the culture

Legong Dance

The Legong Dance is the most feminine dance on Bali and can contain different stories. Eighteen different kinds of Legong Dances have developed and depend-ing on the story the dancers tell, 2-5 girls may perform at the same time.

In the most popular form of Legong, knows as Legong Kraton, three female dancers perform together. Every dance has several things in common; the intricately made and decorated costumes, the headdress with frangipani flowers, and the dancers wear beautiful elaborate makeup. Dancers are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.

Many young girls want to become popular Legong Dancers, however only the most talented girls are al-lowed to perform on stage. Their dance education can start as early as four years old while the body is still very flexible.

For some special temple ceremonies, that occur only every thirty to fifty years, only young girls or boys that have not yet reached puberty can perform a special dance for the Gods. The Balinese believe that before puberty, it is easier for these young innocent boys and girls to enter a trance.

Performances in restaurants are for entertainment only and can be performed by dancers of all ages.

26

Page 27: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

The Kecak Dance, also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, is an absolute must see for visitors to Bali. This unique dance is performed by a hundred or more men using their voices as percussive musical instruments. The men sit in a circle just in front of the audience. They sway, stand up, or lie prone as the story develops. The chanting men wear checked cloth around their waists, leave their chests bare, and throw their arms upwards with their fingers outstretched to the skies. This gesture drives out evil. Some of the men become actors in the drama being unfolded by the dancers who enter the stage and depict a battle from the Ramayana.

Kecak Dance

Barong Dance

As the performers chant, dancers stage a battle in which the monkey king, Sugriwa and his army of monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Rahwana. Kecak has its origins in sanghyang, an exorcism dance in which some dancers go into a trance. The Kecak is so popular among tourists that you can find performances almost anywhere on Bali.

One of the best places is at the cliff-top temple of Ulu Watu. However, Kecak can be seen in Ubud, Batubulan, and all over the island. Any place you choose, you are sure to enjoy the drama.

Barong then cast a stronger spell that helped the soldiers’ bodies resist the sharp keris. In the end, Barong’s powers proved to be stronger, thus Rangda ran away. A partici-pant can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance. It is said that if Rangda’s spell is too strong, a weak sol-dier may not be able to resist it. Even with the help of Barong, he may end up hurting himself with his own keris. The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items, and before they are brought out, a priest must offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung. As well as the priest’s blessings, offerings must be presented. Balinese Dances are impressive and were originally not performed to entertain tourists. The meaning is based on beliefs in the Bali Hindu Religion. In these dances you will still find much of Balinese traditions. Even though the performances have changed to entertain tourists, they keep still the original basic meanings.

Barong is probably the most well known Balinese dance. This dance tells the story of the fight between good and evil. The Barong Dance is a good example of the Balinese way of acting out the relationship between mythology and history being blended into one reality.Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga’s father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle to punish Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came to help Erlangga’s soldiers. They began to fight. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga’s soldiers all want to kill themselves. The soliders then pointed their poisoned keris, a sharpened sword like knife, into their own stomachs and chests.

27

Page 28: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

Mother Temple, also named Besakih Temple or Pura Besakih Bali, is located in the village of Be-sakih (Rendang Sub-district, Karangasem) right at the foot of Mount Agung, in the eastern part of Bali.

As its name already states, it is the mother of all temples and not just one of Bali’s most impor-tant temples; it is the most important one in Bali! Besakih Temple is located about 1,000 meters above sea level and finally it is the highest sub-stantial public temple complex.

Besakih Temple dates back to about the 10th century (the same age as Tirta Empul Temple) and is actually a complex consisting of about 30 singular temples, with hundreds of shrines, dedi-cated to the helpers of the gods.

When you have finally reached Pura Penataran Agung Besakih, the highest temple of the Mother Temple complex, you will be rewarded with un-imaginable views and a fabulous, spiritual feeling.

Obviously, the most marvellous things in Bali also have a reverse side to the coin. As the Mother Temple is a very popular tourist place, you will be asked for money at every single corner. A guide offers his knowledge here, a seller his products there and obviously you have to pay for the en-trance as well. Additionally you will probably get forced to buy a Sarong for 50 USD which is 3-4 times of the real value.

@ BesakihTemple

One Of The Most Popular Tourits Destinations On Everybody’s Day Trip!

28

Page 29: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

@ Besakih Temple

Before you enter the temple complex, Besakih Temple can easily become an-noying, especially if you can’t handle pushy people. As Besakih temple plays such a big role in Balinese tradition and it is a tremendous and imposing com-plex it is therefore hard to say:

“If you can’t handle these situations, stay away from Pura Besakih and see other major temples on Bali such as Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple) or Tirta Empul Temple (Pura Tirta Empul) just to name a few” but unfortunately this is a fact. Although for those who don’t mind at all and make this tour to Bali’s holiest temple will explore a ter-rific complex with stunning views from the top level!

29

Page 30: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

The Place With Highest Temple Density In The World!

Without a doubt, there is no other place in the world with a temple density higher than the one in Bali. Even for Balinese it is partially very hard to fig-ure out the history or meaning of a special temple as we have many myths and stories behind them, from time to time 3 and more.

This has something to do with the fact that differ-ent villages have shared bigger temples and every village has developed over a longer period of time an own story.

As soon as he had started to damage the temple, the King and his soldiers were attacked by thou-sands and thousands of bees and their mission failed. Serious documentations about temples can be found in “Lontars”, which are palm leaf manu-scripts in Asia. The oldest existing ones dateback to 500 BC, the oldest ones in Bali, shown at Lontar Museum Gedong Kirtya, are… years old. Gedong Kirtya is the only museum in the world which shows a Lontar collection. It is interesting to hear that some names are always mentioned inthe Lontars when it comes up to temples.

Regarding to these old manuscripts Dang Hyang Nirarthais one of them. Dang Hyang Nirartha was a chief counselor of a Javanese King. He felt in Love withone of the patrons wife and had to leave Java in 1537.

After arriving in Bali he was the founder of the three temple system in Bali. Every village still follows this philosophy and the temple for Brahma (the god of creation) is facing the mountain, the Vishnu temple (the maintainer and protector) is based in the mid-dle of the village and for Shiva (the destroyer) the temple is facing the ocean.

Also the Lontars tell about Mpu Kuturan, a travel-ling priest. Batukaru Temple, the Shrines at Ulu-watu temple or Bat cave temple are attributed to him. If you are now interest in temples and a Bali Newbi, we highly recommend to see Bratan Teple. It is located on the shores of Bratan lake about 1240 meters above the sea level. The climate there is already completely different and the area invites you for a stroll or some watersports. A per-

Balangan Beach is located in the Bukit, in the south west of Bali. This place is a real hidden gem and “The Golden Sand Area” is well worth a visit. Situated under a massive cliff, Balangan Beach is not easy to find but precisely for this reason this wonderful beauty offers nearly full privacy. Apart from some surfers who enjoy the fantastic waves in this area you will only meet some other tourists who found this place by coincidence.

A public parking place on top of the cliff is pro-vided and the access to Balangan Beach is very

easy, you just have to handle the stairs down the cliff to the beach. Because of the massive waves, Balangan Beach is not highly recommended for swimming but offers another opportunity which is rare to find somewhere else in Bali, a romantic cliff edge wedding with stunning sunset views!

In case you plan to get married, Balangan Cliff will make the most important day in your life simply unforgettable. Wedding agents in Bali offer cer-emonies in every price class. Starting from around 2,000 USD and the sky is the limit. In case you haven’t booked your hotel yet, basic accommo-dation around Balangan Beach is provided for as little as 20 USD.

The rooms are obviously not equipped with an air conditioner but those who are happy with only a fan can make staying around Balangan Beach a real bargain. Day Trips to Balangan Beach can

be -perfectly combined with a visit of Ulu-watu Temple (cliff edge temple) which is very popular for its wild monkeys. In case you are travelling with kids it has to be mentioned that the cliff around Uluwatu Temple is par-tially unsecured. On the way back it is highly recommended to make a stop in Jimbaran Bay for a seafood dinner.

The local warungs (restaurants), nestled in between the area of Four Seasons and Inter-conti Hotel, offer real value for money. A 1.5 Kilo Red Snapper, coming with rice, soup, vegetables and different sauces only adds up to about 10 USD and it is enough for two.

In addition to this, Jimbaran Bay is a very ro-mantic place and offers a great sunset. Be there at the latest around 6.00 pm.

The Double Edged Keris (sword) of Bali

Every fast developing tourist destination in the world has two sides to its blades.

The first area, and surely the most popular one, is known asa mass tourism place such as Kuta or Seminyak. Everyone who has stayed in Bali will have experienced at least one of these area sand seen the Bali Lifestyle in that region. On the other hand what about the other side of the Keris’s blade? Has everyone that has stayed in Kuta, made a trip to Bali’s northern part to see the National park or have they been to Singaraja, Lovina or Candi Dasa?

Unfortunately it is sad but true that plenty of the tourists coming to the island of the gods only see it as a low cost island with great opportunities for food and spa treatments.

@ Sanur beach

The following article is aimed at all those people who so far haven’t heard or have ignored Bali’s other side, the wonderful culture, the outstanding fauna and flora and the opportunity to chill out in a segregated area.

It is directed at all those who are looking for a chance to take great walks, hikes or cycling tours in a cool, fresh area that is 1,500 meters or more above sea level in an outstanding mountainous area. It has been written for all those who are looking for an opportunity to see wild dolphins, buffalo races, deer or fantastic marina wildlife in some of the great snorkeling areas that are just waiting to be explored.

34

Page 35: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

Last but by no means least this article is addressed to all those people who want to cross the Kuta or Seminyak boarder and increase their knowledge by experiencing the second face of Bali (side or the other side of the Keris), the traditional and original face (side)! We hope you are one of these people.

In the regency of Karangasem in the north west of Bali, lies Candi Dasa, it’s a great place to stay overnight and the perfect place to start explorations of the many cultural highlights which are nestled around this area. In addition to this, Candi Dasa has some extremely charming restaurants, such as the “Lotus Sea view Restaurant”, which offers a won-derful ocean view and the perfect place to have Din-ner. Close to Candi Dasa, nestled in the hills around this area, you can find Tenganan village.

The traditions and practices of this village may sound very strange to you but isn’t it worth seeing a village where only the inhabitants are allowed to marry each other andvisitors of the village are pro-hibited from staying overnight?

The Taman Ujung Water palace, Winner of tri-padvisor’s “Travellers’ Choice Award 2013”, Tirta Gangga the former Royal Palace of Krangasem, rated on tripadvisor 4.5/5 and Lempuyang Temple one of Bali’s 9 key directional temples that faces a variety of lakes, mountains and oceans are also located close to Candi Dasa and should not be missed during your trip. Even if youhave already booked your hotel in Bali, it is worth taking a driver and staying overnight in Candi Dasa, a wonderful place located on the northeast coast of Bali.

Another place which is highly recommended for an overnight stay

@Tanah Lot

is Lovina. The name of this neat city is derived from the word ‘lovely’ in Indonesian, which already speaks for itself. Lovina is very popular for dolphin watching which usually starts at 6 o’clock in the morning. For this reason alone an overnight stay in Lovina is already highly recommended. The Northern area is also very popular for its unique hot springs. The Banjar Hot Spring for example is operated professionally, provides lockers and changing rooms and is great fun to spend some time in the lovely warm water, which is roughly 38 degrees. This environment is very family friendly and a great day out if you are travelling with kids. In addition to this, all the hot springs have, due to the

sulfurous water, a healing character. Furthermore, plenty of wonderful waterfalls, such as the Gitgit waterfall, with their fresh water poolsgive you the opportunity to take a dip and cool down whilst on your day trip. The following Tour with an overnight stay away from the hustle and bustle in the south, combines as does the previous recommendation, great things to see in Bali with a family friendly environment, the following tour is highly recom-mended.

Gitgit Waterfall

Penglipuran Village

Gunung Kawi TempleGunung Kawi Temple (Pura Gunung Kawi) is a very unique Balinese temple complex, carved into the mountain and located on Pakerisan River, close to Tampak Siring village in the regency of Gianyar. Pura Gunung Kawi bears a resemblance to the South American Maya Temples as it is surrounded by a lush green tropical rain forest and situated on a mountain river.

Gitgit Waterfall is located in a plateau, about 300 me-ters above sea level. It is the height of about 40 me-ters, surrounded by tropical trees and a lush green environment. The way to Gitgit Waterfall is paved with lots of stalls and on either side of the path you can find some lush plantations (coffee and cloves). The sellers are not aggressive at all and you can finally enjoy a 15 minute walk without getting hassled by anyone.

Penglipuran Village in the traditional Balinese country-side is located in the Bangli regency, about an hour and 30 minute trip from Kuta. See the original Balinese way of living, visit traditional houses and talk to the locals. To keep this outstanding cultural attraction going, the family agreement is that the oldest family member has to move back to Penglipuran after both parents have passed away. A must see for Culture Lovers!

Banjar Hot Spring Bali is a very peaceful place where plenty of locals come for relaxation as well. The toilets are clean, well maintained and lockers are available. One of the pools can be described as a kid’s pool and if you are travelling with the whole family, you can splash around with your children here. A local Restaurant pro-vides basic food and cold drinks and some smaller sou-venir shops are waiting for you to bargain with them.

Mount Batur’s original height was about 4,000 meters in prehistoric times. After an enormous eruption noth-ing was left apart from a large caldera which in 2012 became part of the Global Geopark Network by UN-ESCO. The actual height of Mount Batur is 1,717 me-ters. Mount Batur offers a great opportunity to all cy-cling and trekking fanatics. The Sunrise Trekking Tour is highly recommended to all those who are physically fit.

Sukawati Art Market is the biggest local market in Bali to purchase traditional handicrafts and traditional handmade products, spanning over many blocks on the main road of Sukawati. It can get very interesting when you arrive at the “food department” as this area is extremely local. You should NOT go there if you have a weak constitution! The Trip from Kuta to Sukawati Art Market on average takes one hour.

About a 45 minute trip away from Kuta, in the regency of Tabanan, you are able to find a very interesting but widely ignored attraction; The Subak Museum. Subak stands for a very ingenious water irrigation manage-ment system which was developed in Bali hundreds of years ago but is still in use. A visit to this museum teaches you about Bali’s agricultural tradition with the use of numerous farming related exhibits.

Formerly known as Dreamland, New Kuta Beach looks like it is slowly but steadily transforming into one of Bali’s most luxurious development projects. New Kuta Golf, Klapa Beach Club and Greenpark Waterpark are just some of the projects which have finished over the last couple of years in this area. Enjoy some sunset cocktails at Klapa or play 18 rounds at New Kuta Golf, Bali’s popular cliff edged Golf Course.

Monkey ForestThe Monkey forest is located in Bali’s cultural capital ‘Ubud’ and roughly an hour’s trip from the major cities in the south. The Monkey forest became one of Bali’s most popular sightseeing destinations and plenty of guides put it on their selection of tours. This is because you can see plenty of wild monkeys and it’s the perfect place to go with kids. Be aware of thieving monkeys and make sure you don’t wear any sunglasses, caps or necklaces and take care of your wallet.

The Bird Markets are very local markets. The biodiver-sity of the shown birds in such a small area is simply amazing and reminds more to a Zoo then a market. Hundreds of birds are waiting for a new owner. Howev-er not only Birds can be found at Bali’s major Bird Mar-kets in Denpasar. Puppies, cats, bats, monkeys and other exotic creatures can be bought too. Warning: Most of the cages are inappropriate for the species.

Seminyak Beach is very well known. It perfectly com-bines relaxation, dining and nightlife. As with plenty of other places located on Bali’s west coast, it is a great spot to see Bali’s wonderful sunsets. Plenty of restau-rants and beach bars in every price category stretch along the area known as ‘double six’. The most popular beach club there is called Cocoon, it’s very well known for its sophisticated parties such as the Splash Party.

It is a myth that religions can’t live in peace and harmo-ny next to each other. See a Protestant and a Catholic Church next to a Buddhist or Hindu temple as well as a Muslim mosque nearby. Some of these prayer houses are open for public for a little donation and if you are in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to see, maybe the only place in the world where religions are ‘that close’ to each other.

Karangasem Regency became the spot for the biggest Temple in Bali, Besakih Temple. The tem-ple is visited by local residents as well as tourists. There is also a water park, Tirta Gangga Water palace, rice fields, rolling hills and crystal clear wa-ter. Taman Ujung Karangasem is one of the main attractions in 10 Hectares of Karangasem made by three architects from Bali, the Netherlands and China. (Bali Map)

Bangli Regency attractions can be found at Bukit Jati, which is an ideal place for Hiking and Trek-king, visiting Historic Villages and the Penglipuran Temple. In the mountainous areas around Kin-tamani, there are Mount Batur and Lake Batur which is the largest lake in Bali. It has natural hot springs in Toyabungkah. Bangli District is the only district in Bali that does not have a beach. (Bali Map)

Denpasar is the economic center of Bali. There is a Bajra Sandhi museum of heroes and Ba-linese statues which have become a symbol of Denpasar. The unique Kreneng night market, Denpasar Cultural Park (Art Center) and the Bali museum are all located in the heart of Denpasar. (Bali Map)

Sankara Ubud Resort The word ‘sankara’ refers to a conch seashell that produces a haunting sound when blown. According to the epic Hindu poem, Mahabarata, the horn-like noise of the sankara often signaled the beginning and end of battles between oppos-ing Indian clans. In Bali it is used as a ceremonial instrument during rituals of purification to neutralize negative energy and create a peaceful ambience.

Sankara Ubud Resort is located in the traditional art village of Mas, Ubud. It is 90-minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport and just 15-minutes from the centre of cultural Ubud.

BALI PROPERTY

Interest RatesDue to the financial crisis, interest rates dropped worldwide. Housing finance is cheaper when inter-est rates are lower. A Bali property investment at this time is a good financial idea.

Return on InvestmentBecause of a lower interest rate in Indonesia, many people look at Bali as a good alternative investment. Stocks and Property are showing high return on in-vestments, usually with a minimum holding period of ten years.

Tourist FlowThe number of tourists that visited Bali increased by 10% in 2011 and is steadily rising. People from eve-rywhere are falling in love with this lovely and peaceful island. The increasing number of visitors and expats coming to the island causes a bigger interest in the property market. Both Indonesians and foreigners often buy a holiday or a retirement residence in Bali.

Improved InfrastructureThe infrastructure on Bali is developing. New streets, including tunnels and bridges, are currently under construction and scheduled to be finished in the near future. The government has plans for more develop-

ment in order to handle the increasing tourist flow.

Balinese Tradition – Lease the landThe Balinese are keeping their tradition by leasing and not selling their land. A part of their strong cul-tural tradition is to buy land and keep the land title in a Balinese name so that it will be in the family for future generations. Their culture thinks in terms of generations, both past and future. Leases to foreign-ers should be notarized to insure that they have legal investments.

Indonesian (Balinese) EconomyThe Indonesian economy is going incredibly well compared to other worldwide economies. Along with India and China, the Indonesian GDP will be listed among the top 3 economies worldwide in the next few years.

Permanent Home or Holiday Rental PropertyIf you wish to have a home in Bali, it is easy to hire local people to take care of your house and rent it to guests while you are away. You can advertise on the net or amongst your friends. Good places to stay with well trained staff are always in demand, but please make sure to set up the reuqired licenses.

TEN REASON MAKE BALI PROPERTY INVESTMENT ATTTRACTIVE

Property prices on the island have increased a lot during the last 6 years and there is no doubt the trend will continue for next year

62

Page 63: travelling BALI Vol. XIV

Population Growth on Bali and Limited SpaceThe population growth on Bali Island is significant. Growth is about 2% per year, one of the most rapidly developing in the world, thus space is limited. If you are interested in owning a home on this beautiful is-land, now is the right time.

Banking and Euro CrisisDue to the Western Banking Crisis, many people trust banks less and are now thinking in terms of alternative investments. They are asking questions such as ‘Is the Euro safe?’ or ‘Will banks collapse?’ or ‘Will we get inflation due to the high government spending to aid the Western crisis?’

Opening the Property Market to ForeignersMany countries around Indonesia have opened their propertymarkets to foreigners, educated speculation is that it isonly a matter of time before Indonesia fol-lows other Asiancountries in this process.

Buying property is not an easy decision and every decisionin investment has to be thought about carefully. There arealways risks. Due to the housing bubble, it is important thata property investment be planned with a long term investmentin mind.

Development in some areas of the island have al-readyreached a level of increased efficiency, these places areeasily sold. This situation provides owners with a perfectswitch opportunity.

Sell highly priced property with access to main roads andBuy Property in Jimbaran or Nusa Dua.

At this time, Nusa Dua, Bukit and Jimbaran have the most potential for buying property at a good rate. Over the next ten years, these areas will develop into being one of the most exclusive areas in Bali.Good locations can be found starting at a 225 Mil-lion Rupiah per Are (100m2) , but can go up to 450 Million for land with a beautiful view. An are is an In-donesian measurement, whichis ten metres by ten metres.

If you are considering a retirement investment, you mayalso think about an investment in Nusa Penida. Propertyprices are cheaper there than they are in Bali. The costsfor land are 90% less than Bali’s usual property prices. Aninvestor can lease land now and turn a profit in ten years.

Jimbaran & Uluwatu developed very quickly from a small fishermen village into Bali’s most popular place to have romantic seafood din-ners. Many Restaurants can be found to the left and right of the Intercontinental Hotel.

For those who stay outside of Jimbaran it is highly recommended to combine the visit of Uluwatu Temple which offers a great view, the Kecak Dance, wild monkeys and follow up with a Seafood Dinner at Jimbaran Beach.

Bali’s best Surfing Hot Spots can be found in Uluwatu. Klapa Beach or El Kabron, both di-rectly located on the Cliff offer you a great scen-ery to enjoy your sundowner Cocktails while the Seafood in Jimbaran is already waiting for you.

Nusa Dua has become the fastest develop-ing area over the last couple of years on Bali. Luxurious Hotels and Villas were built in Bali’s preferred and accessible areas away from the wetlands.

For those who like it really special, Pantai Pa-yung (Umbrella Beach) offers a romantic sce-nario away from the crowded areas. At Bali Col-lection, plenty of Restaurants, Shops and Spa’s invite you to stroll around and to enjoy a whole afternoon.

Tanjung Benoa offers great water sport activi-ties. Whacko Beach Club, belonging to BMR Watersports offers you the opportunity to relax with an afternoon cocktail after having great hours on the ocean.

Even if your idea was not staying in Ubud and you have booked your package already, think about one overnight stay. Ubud offers the tradi-tional charm of Bali.

You will experience a completely different Bali away from all other very well known tourist destinations. Already the trip to Ubud is an un-forgettable experience (please see the article – The Street of Art).

See wildlife monkeys at the Monkey Forest, shop for great Artwork, explore the Balinese Culture, have painting classes, wood or fruit carving lessons, see traditional dances or do some other activities such as cycling or raft-ing. If you are into Yoga, Ubud is one of the main desitinations for healthy, living and organic food. Enjoy Bali as it was 10 -15 years ago.

Sanur is part of Denpasar, with a taste of Kuta, Jimbaran, Tanjung Benoa and Nusa Dua in one pot, stirred massively and you have created Sanur. Europeans feel especially at home and attracted to Sanur.

Benoa Harbor, located in the South of Sanur is the primary launch point for many day cruises. Water sports and activities can be found at the long stretch of sandy beaches with an almost continuous beach front sidewalk for strolling.

Moderate nightlife and shopping opportunities are sprinkled throughout Sanur, often recom-mended as the perfect place for families, cou-ples and those who just look for a quiet place. Sanur is the perfect place to enjoy a little bit of everything.

Ten years ago Seminyak was still a small village and has quickly become a very sophisticated party, shopping and lifestyle area. Popular and exclusive Beach Clubs, as well as nice bars, restaurants and shops are located in the North of Legian.

It is already hard to say where Legian ends and Seminyak starts. For those who like high end shopping and exclusive events and concerts, Seminyak is definitely the place to stay. A com-bination of beautiful beaches, sunsets and rice fields make Seminyak area a perfect place for relaxation.

Seminyak features some of the most beautiful new resorts, villas and highly rated restaurants.

Kuta and Legian are very well known for their nightlife and the 5 km white sandy beachfront. For those who want to party, Kuta offers the younger generation the best party spots.

Lots of Surf schools can be found on the beach and it is probably the best place to take the first steps on a board. Lots of markets and shops are waiting for you to negotiate. “Discovery Shopping Mall” and the “Beachwalk”, are lo-cated directly on the beach and offer all popular brands and also great opportunities to enjoy your sundowner cocktails.

Kuta is worth a day trip for all, and those who like the party places right in front of their hotel, are recommended to stay here..

Lovina has more or less the same attrac-tions as Singaraja; Dolphin Tours, Snorkel-ling and Diving. Although in addition to these things you can find the trekking to waterfalls, Banjar Hot Springs (Air Panas – Hot Wa-ter), diving or snorkelling around Menjan-gan island, home to the best preserved coral reef in Bali and the Banjar Buddhist tem-ple, the biggest one in Bali close to Lovina. A very moderate nightlife has started to de-velop here, especially on weekends and it’s getting a little bit busier outside of the hotels. Apart from the high Season (around August) Lovina is a very quiet area and action seek-ers, apart from Divers and Surfers who like the ocean calmer, should only come for a day trip to enjoy the black sand beaches. Just two and half hours drive from the hus-tle and bustle of the busy tourist areas in the south, you will enjoy a relaxing Bali holiday.

Candi Dasa is located in the Samuh neigbor-hood of the Bugbug Village, 12 kilometres southwest of Amlapura, the main town and capital of the Karangasem regency, seaside town in eastern Bali that rests on the edge of a fresh water lagoon. It was formerly known as Teluk Kehen (Kehen Bay), but since the tourism industry was introduced the name was changed to Candidasa. Only one thing is for sure, Candidasa is a tran-quil coast offering varying accommodation, from basic to five-star resorts and few good restaurants in between. It is also a strategic place from where to explore the east of the island, which boasts exotic cultural highlights and a range of historical sites and exciting tours to enjoy.
