The design and construction of an 82

bedroom Travelodge Hotel complete

with a bar cafe with a Lidl Supermarket

under and adjacent. The project is set

on the site of a recently demolished

paper mill near the centre of Newcastle

under Lyme.

Key Features

Japanese Knotweed was present on the

site, this was treated and removed.

The site was of Archaeological interest,

having been a medieval settment.

Archaeological monitoring was carried

out during the substructure works.

The ground had been contaminated

by previous use, so a site remediation

scheme was developed, approved and

implemented before the main works.

The site, being a paper mill in the past,

was set over a culverted stream. The

design of the foundations and external

works allowed the culvert to remain in

tact and undisturbed.

A sustainable drainage system was

designed to the approval of the EA.

Highways works were designed and

installed to both allow access into the

site from the main A34 and to improve

one of the adjacent junctions to ease

traffic flow. These were installed with

single lane closures only avoiding the

need to diver traffic.
