1) NOTE: THE BELT OF THE TREADMILL WILL NEED TO BE ADJUSTED PRIOR TO FIRST USE. Open the carton of your new Treadmill near where you want it placed (Caution: some parts are located under the frame of the treadmill). Select a clear level floor. This is a heavy piece of equipment and assembly will require at least Two Strong Adults.

2) Remove all contents from inside the carton and verify that you have all listed parts as shown on the Parts Identifier. Parts are in various places, so be sure to examine all the boxes, inside the control panel box, inside the packaging, under the treadmill and inside smaller cartons. We suggest that you use the bottom carton as a clean flat work area to protect the fitness equipment. Carefully cut or tear the four carton corners so that the bottom is now your work area. Also verify that you have the correct tools.

10) This product must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for an electric current which can reduce the risk of electric shock.

a) For all grounded, cord-connected products: This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. CAUTION: Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the product - it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

b) For a grounded, cord-connected product rated less than 15 amperes and intended for use on a nominal 120-volt supply circuit, either (1) or (2) applies:

(1) This product is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug in Fig. 5. A temporary adapter that looks like the adapter illustrated in Fig. 5A may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in Fig. 5A if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet (Fig. 5) can be installed by a qualified electrician. The green colored rigid ear, lug, or the like extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place by a metal screw.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TX 4.9 TREADMILL

A) Before starting, read and understand all warnings, operating, assembly and maintenance instructions prior to starting use of the treadmill. If use of the treadmill is NOT indicated due to your physician’s opinion, your lack of understanding of the warnings, your lack of understanding of the operating or assembly instructions, DO NOT USE THIS OR ANY TREADMILL. PRIOR TO ANY USE, MAKE SURE THAT THE TREADMILL SITS SECURELY ON A LEVEL SURFACE. Call SPORTCRAFT® toll free at 1 800-526-0244 if you have any questions concerning the assembly or operation of this treadmill.

B) This treadmill is for use with U.S. household current only, 110 volt, 60-cycle power. It is not for use with any other power source. The treadmill is for indoor, residential use only. MAKE SURE THAT THE TREADMILL SITS ON A SECURE, LEVEL SURFACE AND THAT THE REAR INCLINE ADJUSTERS OF THE TREADMILL ARE BOTH IN CONTACT WITH THE LEVEL SURFACE. The recommended minmum free space for access around the treadmill is 20” at each side and 40” at the rear of the treadmill. This is to allow for an emergency dismount and passage around the treadmill. Use of a treadmill mat is highly recommended.

C) Plug the treadmill into an appropriate outlet as described in the IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS section. Do not use extension cords. Do not alter the plug in any manner to make it fit your outlet. If it does not fit, contact a licensed electrician to make the necessary upgrades in your outlet. The treadmill should be the only device using the circuit into which it is plugged. If you are in doubt about your electrical service or the circuits in your home you should contact your electric company or a licensed electrician. (See Maintenance Instructions #3 and #4 concerning the walking belt.) Move the ON/OFF switch located on the front frame near the cord to the “ON” position prior to inserting the key.

D) Insert the red plastic safety key into the slot at the center front edge of the treadmill control console. All LED displays should light up and a tone will sound. Attach the other end of the key leash to the waistband of your clothing. REMOVAL OF THIS KEY AT ANY TIME WILL CAUSE THE TREADMILL TO STOP IMMEDIATELY and all values such as time, mileage and calories will be lost and reset to zero. Stand with one foot on each side of the treadmill walking belt surface as the starting position for all operations. Before starting, locate the STOP button at the lower center of the control console. Remember that the treadmill is designed for users up to 250 lbs.

E) For Manual operation, press the speed increase button (symbol “+” on console) and you will note that the number in the right-hand window is changing. A tone will sound when the button is pressed and released. Speed increases or decreases in 0.1MPH increments starting at 1.0MPH and stopping at a top speed of 10.0 MPH. Hold the speed increase button until you reach your desired starting speed. As soon as you release the speed increase button, a tone will sound and the motor will start and steadily increase speed to reach the speed you entered. Hold on to the handrails of the treadmill while you view the moving belt. When you feel comfortable with the pace of the belt, step onto the belt and begin walking. Do not continue to stare at the belt. Look up. When you are comfortable with the pace, you may choose to let go of the treadmill handrails. NOTE: Due to the varying weight of users and other factors, you may notice a variation in the speed of the belt compared to the setting you chose. This will happen during the entire workout and is not a malfunction.

F) QUICK RESPONSE SPEED – The QRS system allows the user to move to one of the quick speed levels with convenience of 2 button strokes. PRESS the QRS button and press your chosen speed level button, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 MPH, on the console. You must make the speed choice within 5 seconds of pushing the QRS button. The treadmill will automatically move to the new chosen speed at the standard rate of increase or decrease. BE ALERT! The QRS system works whether the belt is moving OR stopped.

G) In Manual operation, to decrease speed, press the speed decrease button (symbol “-” on console). A tone will sound when the button is pressed and released. The number in the right-hand window will change to reflect the new speed that you have chosen. The treadmill will gradually reduce speed after you release the decrease button until it reaches the new speed that you have entered. YOU MAY STOP THE TREADMILL IMMEDIATELY BY REMOVING THE SAFETY KEY MENTIONED, or by pressing the red STOP button located near the middle of the console. The treadmill will stop more gradually using the STOP button than by using the safety key. NOTE: The right-hand window only shows the speed while you are adjusting the speed OR if you press the MODE button. Pressing the MODE button will display the current speed setting for 5 seconds. At all other times, the distance the treadmill belt has traveled during the current session will be displayed. It is displayed in 00.1-mile increments up to 99.9 miles after which it returns to 00.0 miles. You can also determine which value is being displayed by noting which small, round LED above the window is currently lit. The left side LED indicates speed and the right side LED indicates distance.

H) The walking belt of all treadmills may occasionally move to the right or left causing the belt to come into contact or near contact with other fixed parts of the treadmill. For best operation, the belt should stay nearly centered on the supporting deck. The user may occasionally need to correct the position of the belt. At the rear of the treadmill there are two adjustment bolt heads (#29). See illustration above. These are used to move the belt to the left or right as follows:

1. No one should be standing on the belt while making these adjustments.2. Start the treadmill belt moving according to the instructions.3. Set the speed at approximately 5.0 mph. The faster the belt is running, the faster the adjustment

will be seen. CAUTION: If you adjust the belt too far, you may not be able to stop the right or left movement of the belt before it reaches the side of the deck and other parts of the treadmill. This may cause damage to your belt or treadmill. This is not covered by the warranty.

Page 11: Treadmill TX 4.9

P. 10 © 2004 Sportcraft, Ltd.

4. Insert the short end of the Allen wrench provided into the bolt head. If the belt is too far to the right as looking at the treadmill from the rear, use the right side bolt. If the belt is too far left, use the left side bolt.

5. With the belt running, turn the Allen wrench 1/2 turn clockwise. Observe the belt. It should start moving away from the side. Turning the bolt head clockwise (either bolt head) will cause the walking belt to move away from the bolt you are turning.

6. You may repeat the 1⁄2 turn two (2) more times for a total of three 1⁄2 turns. Allow some time, at least 30 seconds for the belt to move.

7. Never make more than three half turns of the same bolt head. If, after three 1⁄2 turns the belt remains out of position, use the other side for adjustment as follows: If you have been using the right side bolt, move to the left side. Turn the bolt counterclockwise 1⁄2 turn. (See illustration above.) Turning the bolt head counterclockwise (either bolt head) will cause the walking belt to move toward the bolt you are turning. Allow some time, at least 30 seconds for the belt to move.

If your belt appears to slip as you are walking on it, you should tighten the belt somewhat to eliminate the slip. Follow the instructions above EXCEPT make an equal number of adjustment turns on EACH bolt. It may take a number of complete revolutions to tighten your belt. Turning the bolt heads clockwise will tighten the belt. Make one complete revolution adjustment to each bolt head and then walk on the your treadmill to test for slipping. If it still slips, repeat the operation. After making 2 complete turns of each bolt and slipping still occurs, make 1⁄2 turns in each bolt and test after each side is adjusted. Adjusting the walking belt too tight can cause damage to your treadmill. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

I) PULSE MODE. The pulse sensor is on whenever the red safety key is inserted. For safety and enhanced accuracy, the treadmill should be stopped whenever you place your finger on the pulse sensor.

To take your pulse reading, stop your treadmill by pressing the stop button. Your distance and time values will be saved. Place one foot on each siderail and remain as still as you possibly can. Place your index finger OVER the pulse lens. Three bars should appear within a few seconds. In addition, the upper left side LED above the left-hand window will light. This signals that the pulse reading is eminent. Two seconds after the bars appear they will disappear one at a time. The sensor will then display the average pulse rate. Once finished, re-start your treadmill by resetting your speed value as instructed in #E or complete your workout by removing the safety key.

NOTE: 1) DO NOT press your finger firmly onto the lens. Too much pressure on your finger tip, movement of your hand or body will result in the wrong reading or no reading at all.

2) THE PULSE SENSOR IS NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE. IT IS MEANT FOR YOUR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY AND IS DESIGNED TO GIVE AN “AVERAGE” PULSE RATE. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO OFFER MEDICAL ADVICE NOR WILL IT MEASURE PULSE ACCURATELY EVERY TIME.

J) CALORIE BURN. The calories burned during the current workout are displayed in the left-hand window of the control console. It will show values from 001 to 999. Calories expended are controlled by distance, not speed.

K) STOPPING THE TREADMILL. When you are finished with your workout or at any time during the workout, you may stop the treadmill in a number of ways: A) Depress and release the STOP button. The treadmill will gradually slow to 00.0MPH and the distance covered and calories burned during that workout will continue to be displayed on the console. The values will stay for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, all values will clear and you must start again with instruction #D. You can clear the values by pressing and holding the STOP button for 5 seconds. You can then start the treadmill by pressing the SPEED increase button in Instruction #E. B) You may reduce the speed to zero by depressing the decrease symbol (-) until the right-hand speed readout window reads 00.0. When you release the decrease button the treadmill will gradually stop. You will have the same 30-minute options as stated above. C) You may pull the SAFETY KEY out of the slot in the console and the treadmill will stop IMMEDIATELY. No values will be saved and all displays will be off. You may restart with Instruction #D.

L) PROGRAMMED OPERATION. In addition to the manual operation described above, you may program your treadmill workout to cover a certain distance regardless of time spent, a certain amount of time regardless of distance covered or a combination of distance and time where the first value achieved (distance or time) will end the workout.

M) PROGRAMMED TIME. After inserting the safety key and the displays are lit, depress the MODE button once. The time display in the center window will flash. Press the increase symbol (+) to increase the time in 1 minute intervals. You may press the decrease symbol (-) if you wish to decrease the time before you start the workout. When the length of time you want to workout is displayed, press the MODE button twice to confirm this time and move to Speed setting MODE. At this point you may press the increase symbol (+) to start the speed adjustment. Operation will be as stated in Instruction #E and subsequent instructions EXCEPT that the time will count down upon starting the treadmill and the treadmill will automatically stop when the timer reads 00:00. A tone will sound 5 beeps alerting you that the belt is about to stop. The belt gradually stops after the 5th beep. You may stop the treadmill at any time as stated in Instruction #K.

N) PROGRAMMED DISTANCE. After inserting the safety key and the displays are lit, depress the MODE button twice. The right-hand window LED’s will flash. Press the increase symbol (+) to increase the distance in 0.5 increments. It will start at 0.5 miles. Holding the increase symbol will speed the change. You may press the decrease symbol (-) before starting to adjust downward the distance you desire. When the distance you desire is displayed, press the MODE button to confirm the distance. Operation will be as stated in Instruction #E and subsequent instructions EXCEPT that the distance will count down upon starting the treadmill and the treadmill will automatically stop when the distance reads 00.0. A tone will sound 5 beeps alerting you that the belt is about to stop. The belt stops after the 5th beep. You may stop the treadmill at any time as stated in Instruction #K.

O) PROGRAMMED BOTH TIME AND DISTANCE. Follow the steps outlined in Instruction #K EXCEPT to press the MODE button once to set the Distance MODE. Then follow Instruction #N completely. At this point, both Time and Distance will be programmed. The treadmill workout will end automatically when EITHER the Time OR Distance reaches 00:00 or 00.0. Operation will be as stated in Instruction #E and subsequent instructions EXCEPT that the time and distance will count down upon starting the treadmill and the treadmill will automatically stop when the timer reads 00:00 or the distance reads 00.0, whichever value is reached first. A tone will sound 5 beeps alerting you that the belt is about to stop. The belt gradually stops after the 5th beep. You may stop the treadmill at any time as stated in Instruction #K.

P) If you insert the safety key but do not press any buttons, the displays will turn off and all power to the motor will be off after 30 minutes. If you press some keys but do not start a workout, after 30 minutes you will need to remove and reinsert the key as you start over with Instruction #D.

Q) To re-set the console values, press and hold the STOP button for 5 seconds. All LED values will return to zero.

R) STORAGE POSITION. The treadmill may be folded to reduce the floor space the treadmill occupies when it is not in use. With the treadmill off AND unplugged, you may lift the deck by the rear portion until it reaches the console. You must be able to lift and support at least 75 lbs. to perform this operation. Align the sliding bolt on the underside of the treadmill with the plastic receiver hole in the right side hand rail. Slide the Locking Bolt into the Lock Receiver hole and press the handle down to firmly lock the treadmill in the upright position. Carefully and slowly remove your hand from the deck and assure that the lock is engaged. The deck should not move when the lock is engaged. Supporting the weight of the deck as before, carefully lower the deck to the floor. DO NOT DROP THE DECK. Once it is in the use position, start again with Instruction #A.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

1. LUBRICATION: Your deck and walking belt come from the factory ready to use. There is no need to apply any lubricant in order to start to use your new treadmill. We recommend that a small amount of the lubricant provided on your parts tray be applied after 200 hours of use. For example, after using your treadmill for 5 days a week at 45 minutes per day, your treadmill will need to be lubricated in about one year.

2. In order to apply the lubricant your must follow these steps:

A. Unplug the treadmill from the electrical outlet.

B. Loosen the belt tension a small amount by turning the roller adjustment screws at the end of the treadmill counter clockwise (to the left). Use the hex key that was provided with your treadmill. You may need to turn both these screws at least 2 full turns or more to provide the slack you need to perform the lubrication.

A WORD ABOUT TREADMILLS

The use of a treadmill can sometimes produce static electricity. The discharge of this electricity can be annoying, startling and uncomfortable. It usually comes in the form of an unexpected “snap” or “pop” when touching some of the metal parts on the treadmill. Sportcraft takes great care in engineering their treadmills to eliminate this discharge however factors outside of our control do sometimes lead to static buildup.

Some of the common causes of static buildup and discharge involve the shoes and clothing of the user. Our testing has shown that certain footwear may be more prone to a buildup of static electricity. Our tests also show that certain nylon and other polyester material in garments may be more prone to a buildup of static electricity much the same as footwear. IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING STATIC ELECTRICITY DISCHARGE WHILE USING YOUR TREADMILL, CHANGE YOUR FOOTWEAR AND/OR YOUR OUTER GARMENTS.

If you continue to experience static electricity while using your treadmill, tests have shown that the use of Static Guard®, a product sold in grocery and discount stores, can eliminate the discharge of static electricity. Spray the product directly on the treadmill belt while it is moving at a slow speed. Coat the entire belt surface. Allow the product to completely dry for at least 10 minutes or such longer time as directed by the static spray manufacturer. Check your footing on the belt before you restart your workout. Reapply the static spray if necessary.

Please contact Sportcraft Consumer Affairs Division at 1-800-526-0244 or by e-mail at [email protected] if you have any questions, concerns or needs concerning static electricity or any other concerns with your Sportcraft treadmill.

C. When you can lift the edge of the treadmill walking belt a small distance from the deck, one inch or so, you will have enough space to apply the lubricant.

D. Snip the end of the “needle” top of the silicone container with a scissors or other sharp object. Be careful not to cut off too much of the top. You need a very small opening to properly apply the lubricant. There is a cap provided to close the container after use. Push the “needle” top of the container under the belt as far as you can and apply the silicone directly to the deck. The silicone should be applied in drops or in a very thin stream. Apply the silicone the entire length of the deck on both sides of the walking belt. One application per side is all that is needed.

E. Tighten the roller adjustment screws by turning them clockwise (to the right) the exact same number of turns that you used to loosen them. You must now make sure that the treadmill walking belt is centered.

F. Plug the treadmill in to the electrical outlet.

G. With no one on the treadmill, start it at a slow speed, less than 2.5 MPH. Watch the belt for 30 to 60 seconds. If it is running in the center of the deck, increase the speed to 5.0 MPH and observe if it stays in the center of the deck. If it stays in the center, the treadmill is ready to use.

H. If the belt is off center of moves back and forth on the deck, refer to your operating instructions for the belt adjustment procedure.

WORKOUT AND TRAINING TIPS

Got a question about how to make the most of your treadmill workout? Take a look below to find out more about getting quicker results, exercising safely, staying motivated, and having fun too!

Why should I workout?

The benefits of exercise are far-reaching. You can not only lose weight and tone muscle, especially as part of a complete healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, but you can also relieve stress, keep your bones strong, and lower your risk of some health-oriented illnesses.

How often do I workout?

Fitness experts* say that to get best conditioning for your heart and lungs and for good health you should workout aerobically, such as running or walking, 3 to 5 days a week. If you are a beginner, 3 days a week will be plenty until your body gets used to it. If you have already been working out, 4-5 days a week will help you get more fit. Try to alternate an exercise day with a rest day. If you workout, 4-5 days a week, make sure your back-to-back exercise days alternate between being easy and hard, or shorter and longer. Remember, rest is also an important part of working out whether you are a beginner or more advanced.

How long should a workout be?

A total of 20 to 60 minutes on a workout day is your goal, fitness experts say.* A beginner does less; if you have experience, you can do more. If you don’t have time or aren’t comfortable doing all of it at once, you can also break up your exercise into 10-minute segments during the day for the same results. For example, if your goal is a 30-minute walk, you can do 3, 10-minute walks.

How hard do I workout?

A workout for general conditioning, good fitness, better health, and weight loss should be moderate - not too hard and not too easy.* You should be able to talk without feeling out of breath, but you shouldn’t be able to deliver a lecture! You should be able to sustain your workout intensity for the length of time you choose. If you are new to exercise, keep the workout feeling a little easier until your body gets used to it. As you advance, you can work out harder.

What do I do during a workout?

There are three parts to any workout:· Warm-up - 5-10 minutes - At an easy pace to loosen your muscles and warm-up your heart. You can either walk

or jog on the treadmill at slower speed, or do other light aerobic activities for a few minutes to let your muscles to prepare themselves for the aerobic section.

· Aerobic section - 20-60 minutes - As described in the above questions. · Cool-down - 5-10 minutes - To let your breathing, and heart rate slowdown. Remain on the treadmill, walking or

jogging at a gradually slower pace during the cool-down. Then stretch.

Why should I stretch and when is the best time?

When you exercise, your muscles work hard and contract or get tight. Stretching help muscles return to their pre-exercise looseness so you can avoid injury. It’s best to stretch after a cool-down when you are warm and muscles are pliable. Fitness experts* recommend you:

· Stretch 2 to 3 days a week. · Stretch the major muscles you used. For example, on a treadmill, the muscles used include: hamstrings (back

of upper legs), thighs (front of upper legs), calves, shins (front of lower legs), hips, back, and chest. · Hold each position for 10-30 seconds just to a point of mild tension but not pain. · Do not bounce and keep your breathing steady.· Stretch each muscle 3 to 4 times per session for best results.

Do I need special shoes for a treadmill workout?

If you are going to mostly walk or mostly run, invest in shoes made for that specific activity if possible. Shoes don’t need to be expensive. They should in general offer:

· Good support. Walking shoes in particular need excellent heel support, called a “heel cup.”· Enough cushioning for your needs. Running shoes will have more in the forefoot, and walking shoes will have

less overall because of lower impact.· Breathable uppers so your sweat and heat can escape.· Forefoot flexibility, especially for walking.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. For example:· Loose pants or sweats, or exercise tights, depending on your personal taste.· Man-made “wicking fibers,” such as polyester, CoolMax, or Lycra that don’t just soak up and hold the sweat like

cotton does and can be more comfortable when you sweat.· Synthetic socks, which also don’t absorb all your sweat and can help fend off blisters since they don’t stay wet

and soggy.

Is there a special technique?

Stand tall, with shoulders back, chest lifted, and abdominal muscles tight. Avoid leaning forward from your waist, or hanging onto the rails except to catch your balance or to get on and off. Use your arms strongly as you swing them forward and backward from the shoulder, and don’t neglect the swing backward! Walkers should also land on their heels with toes lifted high and roll through the entire foot. Runners should land quietly and softly.

How do I stay motivated? Does it matter where I put the treadmill?

Set up the treadmill in a room that is well-ventilated and inviting so you want to go there. Windows are helpful so you can get air and look outside. A music system can help entertain and motivate, as can a TV or VCR. Try watching movies or your favorite sports team during a workout! Also, experiment with varying your intensity and incline during a workout. Log your progress so you can keep track of your changes and improvement.

Why should I drink water?

Water keeps your engine running smoothly and safely. Keep a plastic sport bottle of water handy during a workout and sip as you go. Drink at least 8 to 10 cups of fluids a day - more if you workout or it’s hot. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
