I. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

(b) What is Motorized Treasure Hunt?

A motor treasure hunt is an event whereby participants would be given a duration of time to complete a given route. Route navigation would be by described route card issued at the start of an event. The route cards would be mainly of the “Rally Tulip” type.

Along the route participants would have to answer a given set of questions and to collect treasures. Questions would be mostly of a cryptic nature involving the application of general knowledge, anagrams, a play of words, etc. Some questions may test the participant’s power of observation.

Points would be awarded for correct answers and treasures given and collected. The team which scores the most points, after deduction of penalty points, if any, would be declared the winner.

(c) What is a briefing?

The organizers before the actual hunt normally hold briefing. It is important for at least one team member to attend this briefing for some “pointers” about the hunt as a guide for the team’s preparations.

Things to note at briefings are: -

The theme of the hunt, if any The total distance to be covered The number of questions and treasures The time duration given Penalty points Type of car used No of questions, type of questions Other pointers

(d) What is Car Scrutineering?

The car are normally scrutineered a day before the event or before the start of the event. Sometimes the scrutineering would be done along the route. In MMC Treasure hunts this has never occurred.

Cars would be scrutineered for its roadworthiness and other safety aspects.

(e) How is the Point Scoring System done?

Points are awarded for each:

Correct answer Correct collect of treasures Car scrutineering (if any)

2

Page 3: treasure hunt tips

(f) Penalty Points are given under the following circumstances: -

Exceeding the time duration; normally 1 penalty point for every 5 extra minutes or part thereof for a maximum of 1 hour.

Violation of traffic regulations such as speeding in excess of speed limit, illegal parking, traffic obstruction etc.

(g) How can a team be disqualified?

Teams are disqualified and considered not having finishing the event should they return after the finish control counter is closed. The Finish Control Counter is at the end of the route and normally it is 60 minutes after the duration time given.

(h) How many Members are there in a Team?

A team may comprise a minimum of two members (the driver and the navigator) or a maximum four members (driver, navigator and two passengers or hunters).

(i) What happens during a Tie?

A tie when two or more teams are tied on points. Under the circumstances, tie-breaking system would be used. In a tie-braking system, the following factors would be taken into consideration to establish which team finishes higher: -

Number of persons in a car The points scored on treasures Questions countdown Time Taken

(j) Are there any competition numbers?

Competition numbers will be issued to teams at the sole discretion of the organizers. The competition numbers are normally stuck to the front doors of the car. In addition, teams would be issued with stickers and advertising materials to be affixed to the body of the car.

(k) What is the Starting Order?

If the starting order is on a first-come-first start basis then to have advantage of starting early the team will have to come early so as to be the first few starters.

(l) How do you stick your Stickers?

Beginners would tend to take off the whole paper at the back of the stickers and stick direct to the cars. This method is not advisable, as the glue may be too strong resulting at times, the peeling of the paintwork upon removal of the stickers.

3

Page 4: treasure hunt tips

One method to avoid spoiling the paintwork is to wax and buff the car before sticking. Then, too, it is advisable to only remove about one inch of the backing paper on all sides of the stickers.

(m) Are telecommunication equipment allowed?

Any form of telecommunication equipment is normally not allowed. Some organizers allow usage for emergency purposes only. The onus of using it otherwise is left to the participants’ honesty. As a point of advise hand phones can become quite a hindrance and a waste of time mostly.

(n) Is the Hunt a Race?

No, it is not a race, although penalty points are given for teams coming in late, the duration time given to complete the route is more than sufficient to answer and collect treasures while driving within the speed limits and adhering to all road and traffic regulations. Henceforth, you do not need a rally or grand prix driver – any average motorist will do.

II. HOW TO BE PREPARED

(a) What to Bring?

Teams must be equipped with a good dictionary and reference books as a source of reference in answering questions.

The complete checklist of things to bring along is as follows: -

A good dictionary and a word thesaurus Reference Books – Encyclopedia, World Almanac, Atlas, Books of Places and

Facts, Book on Plants and Nature.(ada sikit lebih) Binoculars – an advantage at heavy traffic whereby teams could stop their cars at

one spot and use the binoculars to look for answers from a distance Clip type writing boards – a place to write on Writing instrument – preferably the ‘hang around the neck’ type to avoid

misplacing Food and Drinks – you may have to skip lunch

(b) What to wear?

Participants should wear comfortable canvas shoes (for better driving and walking), cool cotton T-shirt and pouch back (for your coins, pens, cigarettes, etc)

(c) When to Plan?

The preliminary planning should be after the briefing. The team should plan in advance each team member’s role and the primary stage route planning.

4

Page 5: treasure hunt tips

The final planning is after the tulips are handed out and this involves the detailed final route planning.

(d) What else to do?

Sleep early the night before for a fresh mind and body during the actual hunt Take a good and heavy breakfast for one may have to skip lunch. Arrive early, if last minute instructions and amendments of errors in tulips, or

questions. If the start were on first-come-first start basis, the team would gain a few minutes extra by being the first to be flagged off.

III. WHAT MAKES A TEAM

(a) How to select and divide roles?

Select among your members who is to be the driver, navigator and passengers according to each member’s strength and weaknesses. The navigator is the key man and he should be the one with the most hunting experience and most knowledge. The navigator is normally the team leader.

The division of duties is as follows: -

Driver : Assign this task to a team member who can drive fast but a safe driver. His duties are mainly to drive the vehicle in accordance to the navigator’s instructions and directions without forgetting the Traffic Rules and Regulations.

Navigator : Get the most experienced and intelligent amongst you. He must be able to read and translate the tulips well and able to communicate with the driver on navigating the route. He is the team leader and decides on: -

o Where to stopo Decision to proceed or backtracko Final decisions on answers should there be a deadlock of

opinion among team members

Hunters : The other passenger main duty is to hunt for answers on the right side of the road (the left side is the navigator’s role). The hunter must have good vision and eyesight. If you have a fourth person in the team then the fourth person should be seated on the left rear seat. His/Her role would be to be the second hunter and he is to look for answers on the left together with the navigator. He/She normally assumes the role of the Referencer who looks into reference materials.

(b) What is the seating arrangement?

The seating arrangement preferably should be as follows: -

5

Page 6: treasure hunt tips

Driver : at the driving seat,Navigator : at the front passenger’s seat,Referencer : at the left side of rear passenger’s seatHunter : at the right side of rear passenger’s seat

IV. HOW TO PLAN YOUR ROUTE AND TIMING

Plan the timing of your route in advance. Your first planning should be done immediately after the briefing. By then you would have known the distance to be covered, the time given, the number of questions and treasures.

The final planning should be done immediately after the tulips are handed out at the starting point. After the starting point, stop for five minutes to do the detailed planning.

(a) Time Planning

Should the questions be evenly spread out along the route, your time planning should be based on the distance. In doing this: -

Obtain the total distance to be covered Obtain the time given Minus 30 to 60 minutes (depending on the number of treasures to be solved) from

the total time given Divide the total distance with the remaining time. This would give you the required

distance to be covered within 30 minutes or in one hour.

Should the questions be not evenly spread out, your time planning should be based on the number of questions. In doing this: -

Follow the first three steps as above Divide the number of questions with the remaining time. This would give you the

required number of questions to be answered within 30 minutes or in one hour.

(b) Route Planning

Study the tulips a second time. Mark out where there are going to be long stretches of driving without any questions. During the hunt, when you arrive at this marker: -

The vehicle may be driven at a faster but safe speed Use these stretches to: -

a. Study the treasures questionsb. Referencing key words of the coming questions,c. Discussion of past questions with multiple likely answers

V. WHAT ARE THE BASIC DRIVING AND HUNTING SKILLS REQUIRED

Follow the following principles/approach as closely as possible: -

6

Page 7: treasure hunt tips

At each physical tulip where a question starts, stop the car for a couple of minutes to study and digest the question.

Drive at a speed not exceeding 40 km/h between the physical tulips where the questions are

Navigator to concentrate on the left side of the road to hunt for answers, and the hunter on the right side.

Stop the vehicle where there is a row of shop houses or signs. Look at every sign. Move the vehicle further forward, stop and repeat the observation until the whole row is covered. Use binoculars to assist in getting a further coverage and thereby reducing the stops.

Avoid getting out of the car. All answers are visible from inside the car and visible to the naked eye.

Try not to backtrack – it is time wasting Increase speed whenever possible but within the legal limit where there are no

questions within a sector; to make up for lost time or to gain more time for answering questions.

Stop for 30 to 40 minutes to discuss, solve and find the treasures. Keep at the left side of the road when driving slowly

For they correlate with each other. Treasures normally can be bought or collected at shops or other locations along the route.

It is always advisable to spend at least 30 – 40 minutes to solve your treasures. Stop your vehicle at a convenient place to discuss with your team members.

VIII. HOW TO READ TULIPS

15

Page 16: treasure hunt tips

From the sample Tulips attached overleaf, on the left are the Tulips that you will get during a hunt and on the right is the actual map of the route in the form as normally seen in road maps. You will not be getting the map on the right. This is produced here to assist in understanding tulip reading.

Starting your journey from Point 1 at the bottom of the map, you proceed to turn left while tripping your trip meter to zero. This is written in Tulip as shown on the top of the tulip page.

The first column, Column (A) is the Tulip Number. The second column, Column (B) is the intermediate kilometer reading. The third column, Column (C) shows the Cumulative Kilometer Reading. The fourth column, Column (D) is the Tulips Column and it shows the part of the map at Point 1. This shows the direction you are coming from (i.e. the dot in the tulip) and the direction you are going (i.e. the arrowhead). Referring back to the map, next point (Point 2) shows another T-junction where you have to turn left. You have the option of tripping zero again or to proceed without making your reference to the second column in the tulip sheet which is the cumulative kilometer reading. The distance from Point 1 to Point 2 is 0.25 km.

Proceeding to the next point (Point 3) 1.10 km away you are to make a right turn. Please take note that not all junctions, round about or landmarks on the map is indicated in the tulips. (e.g. junction A, B and C). This is because there is no requirement for you to change direction or make a reference. Always remember that the first priority are the kilometer reading, the second priority are the direction of travel, the third priority are the notes column and finally the fourth which is the last column indicates the questions to be answered.

Should there be questions in the sector you may find the answer in that sector until the next tulip. For an example the answer to Question 1 may be found from the Toll Plaza to the underpass which is 2.75 km long. Treasures which are not marked in the tulips can be found anywhere along the route, if they are marked, you are to look for it in that sector.

When more than one question (indicated by the letter ‘Q’) are found in sector the answers are to be found in sequence. This means that you will have to find the answer to Question 4 before getting the answer to Q5.

Please take note of the Time Check at the bottom of every stage. These times are given for you to check your times that you must be at, at the end of that particular stage. If you are late then you will have to find ways to catch up so that you will not be penalized at the Finish Control. One way of catching up is to skip a few questions, especially the tough ones but by no means must you catch up time by speeding over the speed limit. Any vehicle getting a summons for speeding will automatically be disqualified and considered as a non-finisher.
