About our Worship

We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means “the work of the people”).

Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a consistent flow: praising God, hear-

ing God’s word, offering our prayers and gifts, celebrating communion, and being sent into the

world for service. The format remains fairly constant, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we

sing with the pipe organ, and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano,

guitars, drums, violins, flutes—or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because

we know that different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and change

the style every few weeks. It’s one of the ways we minister to and with each other and build com-

munity. Thank you for being part of our worship and community today!

Lesson 2 Corinthians 4:1-15

Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not

lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice

cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend

ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is

veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has

blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of

the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we pro-

claim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God

who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light

of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treas-

ure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to

God and does not come from us.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to des-

pair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the

body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bod-

ies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the

life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in

you. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—“I

believed, and so I spoke” —we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the

one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into

his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and

more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

L: Word of God, Word of Life

C: Thanks be to God.

Sermon Pr. Bill Hutchison

*Hymn of the Day: ELW, #659 (vv. 1-4) “Will You Let Me Be Your Servant”

*Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cru-

cified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he

rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Fa-

ther, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ever-

lasting. Amen.

*Prayers of the People

After each petition of the prayers:

A: Hear us, O God.

C: Your mercy is great. *Passing the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you. P: Let us share the peace.

Offering

*Offertory Response: ELW, #181 “Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful”

*Offertory Prayer

A: Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you

shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ,

give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to

those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C: Amen.

Sharing the Eucharistic Meal

*The Great Thanksgiving

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

P: It is indeed right . . . and join their unending hymn:

*Sanctus: ELW, p. 190 “Holy, Holy, Holy”

*Eucharistic Prayer

*The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily

bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and

forever. Amen.

The Distribution of Communion

The body and blood of Christ are present in this sacrament, for the forgiveness of sin and

the strengthening of faith. All people are welcome to share in this meal with us. Parents, if

you have a young child who receives communion, please indicate that when the minister

comes to you. Those who do not receive communion are welcome to come forward for a

blessing; simply keep your hands folded.

Come forward and receive the bread from the minister. Gluten-free bread is available.

The gold chalice contains wine; you may drink directly from the cup or dip your bread

into the wine. The pottery chalice contains non-alcoholic grape juice, which you may re-

ceive by dipping your bread into the juice. Return to your seat by the side aisles.

If you would like communion brought to you, simply let an usher know.

Agnus Dei: ELW, p. 191 “Lamb of God”

*Post-Communion Blessing

and forever.

C: Amen.

*Post-Communion Prayer

A: Loving God, by your spirit we are born anew, and you nourish us like

newborns with this holy food, by which we grow into salvation. Give

us grace to live as your risen daughters and sons, shining in the world

with your marvelous light, until you gather all creation to the heavenly

table where Christ reigns in glory forever.

C: Amen.
